When Luke Hemmimgs said
Don't you move
Can't we just stay?
Can we start over?
Don't fade away
'Cause you'll always have a place in me
I felt that

Lie to Me
Lie to me is probably my favorite song lyrically. It expresses this sense of helplessness and defeat that is so raw and desperate. It comes from a position of weakness, not reflecting on what has happened but what is happening now and how things are changing too fast.
It describes a relationship where all the love is withering away, and the person that’s still in love realizes it. The realization breaks them and they hope and pray that their significant other will continue to say, “I love you” even if they don’t mean it.
Even when you take away the romantic aspect of it, it’s still so raw. When Luke sings “I know that you don’t, but if I ask you if you love me, hope you la la la la lie to me” it could apply to any relationship. The pain of feeling a friend drift away, the pain of realizing you’re not as special or gifted compared to your peers, the pain of realizing your parents expect so much more from you.
This song, in my opinion, is the most personal. It tells Luke’s story of his abusive relationship which is something many artists, especially male, wouldn’t traditionally share. That’s what makes it so beautifully written, it comes directly from experience. Not to say that others don't but if you think about their other more emotional songs, they were written after the pain, or while it was subsiding and they tell a story of the past.
Ghost of you talks about once they’ve left and it’s clearly been a while as they sing about the lipstick stain fading. Wrapped Around Your Finger is about losing someone after a time of reassurance, risks, and young love. That’s what makes these bittersweet rather than just painful; it’s also reminiscing a good time while Lie to Me is only pain and the suffering of now
