Hi, same anon, sorry to use as a rant moment but I’m having feelings about this book that haunted me since the eighth grade but like god the older I get the more I’m like “god the Socs were fucked up to Ponyboy” Like Randy literally gets off completely scott free for almost murdering a fourteen year old kid via drowning him in a fountain and also ranted to said kid who’s now completely traumatized in said kids bedroom about how his parents sucked. Like sir maybe you had a sad childhood but at least you have money and like, yes it’s definitely an important characterization that really shows how Pony has empathy and compassion for people, and that’s something I really loved about him, and his sensitivity and sense of forgiveness are very beautiful and powerful things that went over my head but now I deeply appreciate (I also love Luke Skywalker so maybe I just gotta type) but also those two just really took advantage of it and really aren’t willing to look past their privilege to do the same for him and instead use his kindness to assuage their own guilt for their own role in hurting him. Like they’re willing to justify themselves and Bob to him, they’re willing to say he’s ~not like other greasers~ (which is a completely different meta analysis on its own of Ponyboy’s sensitive nature vs how he wants to be tuff and how his intelligence and grieving heightens his feelings of isolation from him peers) so he emphasizes with them but like the second Ponyboy tries to make them see his side of life, tries to open about his aspect of life, their like “haha no” and it’s like god but I do love how it shows (however unintentionally in the books) how it really is such an unbalanced “relationship” between him and the Socs because of all this class privilege even when they should be theoretically on equal ground. Pony is willing to hear them out and treat them with kindness but they aren’t willing to extend the same to him beyond a token “you’re different” that they get offended at him rejecting and reveal themselves to be genuinely unwilling to look beyond class divides because that means they have to take responsibility for their own actions and deal with the fact they’re shitty and actually have to put in effort to not be shitty and they aren’t willing to that. It’s actually lowkey fascinating because Pony is giving them an opportunity to break out of the structure they claim to hate and they show they really don’t want to lose it because deep down they know how comfortable it makes their life. They aren’t actually remorseful, they want to be forgiven with out having any regret or having to repent. So yeah, just Pony should go on to keep being the kind, forgiving person he is but also he should be first in line to Eat the Rich. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk about all these feelings I’m having about a book I read in the eighth grade. Socs are the worst and Pony and frankly all the greasers deserve better. anon you are very, very right. about a lot of things, from the soc's unwillingness and general in ability to connect with ponyboy and their lack of empathy for him. they basically emotionally dump on him all the time through the book, with cherry and randy the biggest offenders. and frankly i hate how much of it does show off his best features too, the empathy he has for other people, the emotional intelligence they do not deserve from him. 

(and you're not the first person to make the luke = pony connection! more than a few people have and given that george lucas and ffc were friends/roommates at one point? i've had that talk with a friend about that connection and circular influence. luke is also my favorite sw character, with such similar traits — and in part, his relationship with dallas makes me think of lukehan, also a parallel a couple people drew). the way they select ponyboy as "one of the good ones" is something that is stark too. like… that's the basis of their relationships. cherry literally says it herself:

“Cherry was looking at me. “What’s a nice, smart kid like you running around with trash like that for?”

I felt myself stiffen. “I’m a grease, same as Dally. He’s my buddy.”

“Cherry sighed. “You two are too sweet to scare anyone. First of all, you didn’t join in Dallas’s dirty talk, and you made him leave us alone. And when we asked you to sit up here with us, you didn’t act like it was an invitation to make out for the night. Besides that, I’ve heard about Dallas Winston, and he looked as hard as nails and twice as tough. And you two don’t look mean.”

“Sure,” I said tiredly, “we’re young and innocent.”

“No,” Cherry said slowly, looking at me carefully, “not innocent. You’ve seen too much to be innocent. Just not . . . dirty.”

being called "one of the good ones" isn't a compliment. randy suddenly growing a modicum of a conscious bc he dumps on ponyboy and realizes pony might not be able to be with his brothers anymore. like bitch, you tried to drown him!!! i have zero understanding for people who like them or who like, ship them. i'm more offended by randy/pony than pony/cherry cause there are moments — even if i don't like them — over a guy who just is self centered even around his supposed "guilt." 

pony's empathy is so very, very key and i adore him for that. i try to keep that in reference whenever i write him because i think it's why the novel + film remain something people coming back to. i also think anyone reading my favorite quote of the novel and thinking it's about cherry and randy and bob is hilarious, and i'll leave it here for the end:

Suddenly it wasn't only a personal thing to me. I could picture hundreds of boys living on the wrong sides of cities, boys with black eyes who jumped at their own shadows. Hundreds of boys who maybe watched sunsets and looked at the stars and ached for something better. I could see boys going down under street lights because they were mean and tough and hated the world, and it was too late to tell them there was still good in it...There should be some help, someone to tell them before it was too late. Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn't be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore. It was important to me.

I’ve noticed something about the Star Wars fandom: All of our ship names are either their job titles put together (ex: spiritassasin, stormpilot, rebelcaptain) or its just their names put together (ex: finnpoe, plokit, lukehan) and I think that’s really fun, fresh, and sexy of us.
