Willow month: TV Show (Full Series/Specific Episode) or Movie

Look you guys know the movie was a whole lot of fun and I absolutely adored the whole series, but for the sake of this event I decided to pick an episode to talk about in more detail instead of “the show was fucking awesome and made me loose my mind” (which I could do for days, and have been doing, how long have I had this side blog, six months? More? Who even knows and I still find things to talk about) and on top of that I’m gonna have to be predictable: Beyond the Shattered Sea

This is such a good episode. It was probably my most rewatched of any of the episodes of the show, with the Wildwood as a close second

All of the characters have important moments in their arcs in this episode, and the writing, directing and acting is on full display, and it’s all immaculate. From Elora and Willow’s training sessions (“so, what did we learn?”/“that you’re a little mean?”/“sure” lol have I mentioned I love their dynamic so much?) to Kit and Jade’s flirty sparring (I could watch for hours), to Boorman’s agonising over the Cuirass and the Lux (seeing him, alone, attempt to get it to work and it not work was such a goddamn heartbreaking scene) to Graydon’s beautiful love confession (he and Elora training together also: pure adorableness) and Kit and Elora jumping off the edge of the world, together, united, finally, I loved every minute of it. For the Glory instantly became a favourite song, Kenneth (“I shall name you Kenneth, after the protagonist of the romantic farce I’m writing” Graydon I love you), just all of it. Truly a stellar episode for the characters and the story

But it’s the setting that sets the episode apart for me

This. The Shattered Sea that no one has ever crossed, where all the maps end. Image credit to @hgstuff for the gorgeous headers. I cannot get enough of looking at these. From the stark and desolate emptiness to the breathtakingly beautiful, the Shattered Sea is a peak location for a pre finale episode. And then the way all the characters have to reckon with things deep inside themselves as they make their way across the vast unknown. The way they set off with the mudmander sleigh, but you can’t make it across that way: you have to walk it, on your own two feet. The journey across the Shattered Sea is your own to walk; no one can do it for you. The way it’s set up is great too. The foreboding, the ominous way it’s described and set up by Zeb, that he and his fellows walked for days, for years, till their swords rusted and they went mad and turned on each other, murdered each other . . . That the sea goes on forever. And then to be on it, the endless shallow water, far as the eye can see. The lack of discernible time. The way the unending, unvarying uniformity begins to feel oppressive - but, just as it is oppressive and smothering, so too is it beautiful

The way the starry sky is reflected in the water is one of the most gorgeous visuals I think I have ever seen in anything ever, and it’s backdrop to a lovely scene between Kit and Elora. It’s in this conversation you can really feel that connection, see it, that growing bond. The cliff at the edge of the world is wonderful and such an interesting premise, the leap of faith you have to take to get to the Immemorial City. And the way Kit and Jade have their romantic moment silhouetted against a sunset just exploding with colour. It’s a beautiful, fascinating setting and I adored every bit of it

So yeah. Fabulous episode all round really

The roommates seemed like a duo from hell, both legacy students from Manhattan, daughters showered in privelege and beauty and secrets. Their fathers brushed shoulders at Manahattan dinner parties, and their mothers gossiped over brunch. They appeared to be friends since childhood, to anyone on the outside, or within their social circles, but there was always an emotional wall built between the two. Maybe because of the way Greer could never hide from Bella, never fully, and never her secrets, not even behind a locked door. Isabella was too observant, too aware, and all too keen on judging whoever came and went through suite 208. There was an arragement between the pair: as long as the space was respectful, clean, quiet in the mornings and calm in the evenings, the secrets would die on their way into the hallway. Bella knew she needed Greer, whether or not she liked the fact, and Greer knew she needed Bella, all the same.

Isabella comes from two lines of wealth, her mother’s family wealth spanning decades in South Korea and her father’s family wealth found working as a hedge fund manager. Anyone who’s anyone would know of the union of the Lee and Choi family and how it brought the Lee’s influence into America.

Her family’s the type to buy impeccible art pieces only to safely tuck them away in storage, own the building where they live in the penthouse suite, and slide through life on the zeros in their bank account. Their daughter never asked for anything, because it would be given before she asked.

Since birth, a precious only child, Bella’s been sheltered away from the ugliness of the world. Sure, she was displayed at dinner parties and large gatherings, but her parents always kept her at arm’s length from many of her peers. Not that she’d have time in her schedule, anyway. Once her mom adored the idea of a ballerina daughter, her days began and ended with ballet lessons, tutoring and French lessons sprinkled into any spare moments.

She grew up with an intense adoration for the arts, and any kind she could get her hands on. Film, music, literature, theater, dance, opera — it consumed her, especially anything dreadful or emotional. As well as her dream of being a prima ballerina. There isn’t much of a story to tell, after all. She ate, slept, and breathed ballet, even regularly missing school and important social events doing so. Proms, dances, birthday parties, Christmas vacations; she wasn’t always allowed such luxuries, because she had to practice, of course.

Freshly 18, the dream she envisioned came falling down. Patellar tendonitis, or “jumper’s knee,” halted everything she’d been working towards, including her acceptance into Juilliard. Sure, she’d be able to dance, stretch, move, be active, with some physical therapy, but going up en pointe? Isabella had to tell her mother that she’ll never see her on stage ever again. Her last pair of pointe shoes are still hanging above her bed, in her dorm room.

Good thing daddy’s alma mater was easily swayed with some donation money, and Bella chose to study art history, maybe find a job at a museum or become a collector, like her mother. She’s still lost on her new dream, because her entire life revolved around the one thing she fully lost. With no more audience to impress, it was a fresh start, and it was frightening.

Things had begun to go well, a roommate that boosted her social status and a bunch of peers who fluttered at the thought of her family’s money. Until Greer went missing. Bella’s left confused, concerned. At first, she laughed; of course Greer took off. Sounds just like her. Now, the situation is no longer funny. She never thought she’d miss having a roommate, but her phone’s constantly on the news pages.

Currently, she’s trying to get through the semester, same as everyone else: spends her mornings in her daily routine, practicing ballet at the private ballet barre in her bedroom, attends her seminars and lectures, and secretly enjoying all the parties and events the school throws.

On this blog, everything is tagged, even if it’s just because it came from my queue, and although I try to tag for characters or at least for fandom (for my own sanity), some things may slip through the cracks. Generally, though, there won’t be anything terribly NSFW, graphic or gory.

I don’t discuss politics online as a rule, but potentially contentious issues are tagged #discourse, and posts with a religious bent are tagged #christianity.

This blog’s header is a panel from Detective Comics #679 (Batman: Prodigal), and features Dick and Tim. The blog title is part of a line from Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

I’ve been in a handful of fandoms, but my first was Anne of Green Gables. My latest fandom is Batman and the Batfamily, especially Dick Grayson. Although I read the comics extensively, I’m a little sorry to admit that I’ve almost never been able to get into any of DC’s comics that aren’t related to the Batfamily. This goes as far as having read hardly any team ups like Young Justice or Teen Titans or the Birds of Prey. When I began reading comics, I was following a reading list that included Batman and the Outsiders, and I almost died of boredom before I finally realised I didn’t have to read it.

I can appreciate a good ship, but I’m not crazy about shipping. I tend to like what’s canon or almost canon, anyway. Examples include Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny, James/Lily, Anne/Gilbert, Jo/Fritz, Bruce/Selina, Dick/Babs and Tim/Steph.

I’m forever salty about Dan’s fate in Jo’s Boys, Remus Lupin’s fate in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Donna Noble’s fate in Doctor Who and That Person’s fate in Crooked Kingdom.

I write fanfiction sometimes. I don’t write crack, slash, femslash, smut or non-canon pairings. Sometimes I only write one or two fics for a fandom and then move on. It was just an itch that needed to be scratched. And I rarely write pairings at all; if there’s a pairing, it’s probably because it’s a basic part of canon. The vast majority of my fics are either canon compliant or diverge from canon at a specific point. Although I rely heavily on canon, I welcome all readers, regardless of level of familiarity with canon.

My favourite genre of music is wizard rock (music based on Harry Potter). Don’t knock it until you’ve listened to ‘Open at the Close’ by Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls.

Attorney General Todd Rokita is alerting Hoosiers of important consumer protection concerns for products recalled in April. Consumers are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities available for those who purchased the recalled items.

“Whether it’s a pressure washer, pajamas, or pain relief products, Hoosier consumers need to know if the products they purchased are flawed,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Protecting consumers is a priority of my office. If you have difficulty finding a solution for your recalled product, call my office.”

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the following consumer products were recalled in April:
