Yevhen Stankovych's When the Fern Blooms, Lviv National Opera (2023)

It is a vivid example of neo-folklorism in the opera genre and is innovative in a number of ways. For the first time in the opera genre, the composer combined the sound of a symphony orchestra with authentic folk choir singing, the age-old traditions of folklore with avant-garde means of expression, and introduced folk instruments into the orchestral score.

Stankovych composed it in 1970s but Soviet authorities forbidden to perform the opera.

Premiere was scheduled for 1978 at the largest concert hall in Kyiv. However during the dress rehearsal, Secretary of Revision commission of the Communist Party of Bolsheviks informed the artists that the performance is banned and ordered the destruction of all sets and costumes for the production. The reasoning for this is considered twofold. First, communists generally wanted to taboo any manifestation of Ukrainian identity. And second, the head of Revision commission at the time pathological hated Ukrainian culture and Ukrainians themselves.

Premiere took place in 2011 as a concert and in 2017 as an opera in Lviv National Opera. The author had to wait for 33 years to finally see his work come to life on stage.

It's November 21st, ⚔️ Ukraine’s Day of Dignity and Freedom. Though the Ukrainian people have suffered terribly since the despotic Vladimir Putin began his brutal invasion of their country on February 24th, 2022, they continue to fight bravely and profess they’ll never stop fighting until the last Russian soldier leaves their territory.

Ukraine stands on the frontline of the democratic world that is pushing back against a revisionist wave of authoritarian powers’ assault on international order. Ukraine’s allies around the world have a moral duty to support the Ukrainian people, and so far, they’re performing their duty admirably. After all, each of Ukraine’s allies has its own geopolitical stake in the outcome of this war and cannot afford to see Russia win. That would result in a tectonic shift in international affairs and certainly affect the global security landscape for the worse.

Ukraine’s Day of Dignity and Freedom signifies their first victorious battle in this war. The Ukrainian people do not consider themselves victims – they consider themselves invincible. Let’s hope they stay that way. We salute you, Ukraine! ☮️ Peace… the sooner the better… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Мій тато та запис для мого виднограю / My dad and the recording for my video

UA: Цього вересня я почала планувати виднограй про день народження моєї мами, який був 7 травня (у той момент я знімала инший виднограй про наш переїзд до Лондона). Я дуже довго писала сценарій, десь місяць через те, що почалась школа, тож я в жовтні почала записувати авдіо. Як я це робила всі минулі рази?

EN: This September I started planning a video about my mom's birthday, that was in 7th of May (that time I was making another video about our moving to London). I was writing the scenario for very long time, about a month, because my school has started, so in October I started recording the audio. How was I doing it before?

UA: Усі репліки, можливо, звукові ефекти, потім усе це слухала та перезаписувала помилки. Ще музика. Її я й досі пишу, базуючись на абсолютно різних піснях. Цього разу це Океан Ельзи - Там, Де Нас Нема. Моя мама дуже любить цю пісню

EN: All the lines, maybe, sound effects, then I was re-listening it and re-recording the mistakes. Also the music. I'm still writing it, being based on totally different songs. This time it was Ocean Elzy - Tam, De Nas Nema (Where There's No Us). My mom loves this song very much

UA: Але також цього разу мої персонажі багато часу проводили на вулиці, в ресторані, у вокзалі. А там, як відомо, дуже шумно, і це стало справжнім викликом для мене. Тож я спробувала дуже багато нових та старих методів, як копіювання звуків (шипіння - морські хвилі), їх точне відтворення (буквально сісти та випити чай), синтезатор (поліцейська сирена), запис оригінальних звуків (висунути диктофон з вікна і записати вулицю). Тож, в моєму записі все шумно, багато різних звуків та доріжок

EN: But also this time my characters spent a lot of time outside, in the restaurant, in the train station. As you know, it's very loud here, and it became a real challenge for me. So, I tried a lot of new and old methods, such as copying of sounds (hissing - sea waves), their accurate repeating (literally sitting down and drinking tea), syntesator (police alarm), recording of original sounds (sticking my recorder out of the window and recording the street). So, in my recording there's everything loud, a lot of different sounds and tracks

UA: І саме для цієї мети я захотіла мати инший голос. І у мене зʼявилася ідея запросити свого тата на роль диктора на вокзалі. Він знається на звуках, тому що дуже багато займався музикою та грав у гурті

EN: And especially for this goal and wanted to have an another voice. And I had an idea to invite my dad for the role of the narrator on the train station. He's good in sound producing, because he did a lot of music and played in a band

UA: Перед відʼїздом зі Львова після вакацій я йому написала дві досить довгі репліки і попросила їх записати на диктофон. І потім, він мені надіслав ці дві репліки і вони звучали прекрасно! Я сподіваюсь, їх помітять серед всього хаосу мого заснованого-на-реальних-подіях вокзалу

EN: Before the departure from Lviv after the vacations I wrote two quite long lines for him asked him to record them. And then, he sent me this two lines and they sounded perfect! I hope, they'll be noticed among all this chaos of my based-on-a-true-story train station

UA: Скоро я ще закінчу писати пісню і додам її. І тоді почну робити кадри, які точно будуть найкращими з попередніх, тому що я роблю прогрес. Скоріш за все, я їх виставлю сюди

EN: Soon I'll also finish writing the song and add it. And then I'll start making shots that will be definitely the best out of the last ones, because I'm making progress. It's likely for me to post them

"A rocket hit one of the passenger cars of the Kherson-Lviv train during the missile strike on Kherson railway station. One conductor has suffered injuries. He is being treated now.

At the moment of the missile strike, the boarding had not yet started, all passengers were in a protected area. As of now, the train has already departed with a 14-minute delay. The cars that sustained damages from the bombing will be promptly replaced during the stop at the Mykolayiv railway station."

PS: today Russia bombed a mall and a railway station in Kherson. 16 civilians dead. Many sustained injuries.
