There’s a couple fics I’ve been craving for a while and haven’t been able to find any I really love, so any help/ recommendations would be much appreciated!

A) Lan Xichen focused fics. It’s so hard to find fics that centre him.

B) Lan Sizhui focused fics. Mainly him with his dads/ family, but also him remembering his past would be great! Baby or adult A-yuan.

Since @raininyourblackeyes planted the idea of MDZS ice skating au in my head and I can’t get it out I decided to write my ideas out since I don’t have time to write full fanfics right now. Bear in mind that I am no skating expert only an amateur with a lot of missing information and deep love for this sport 🖤

- personally I see LWJ as single man skating from a young age in the very traditional way. He’s accompanied by a qin music and his costumes are always pristine white. He’s considered something of a prodigy in the skating community. His uncle is his trainer and expect a lot from him. LXC is skating too but doesn’t build his future on this. I cannot see LWJ skating in pair mostly because I don’t think he would enjoy physical contact between skaters. I imagine him consumed by the music, looking otherworldly on the ice. After his routines people throw plush rabbits on the rink 🐇

- WWX started to skate when he got fostered by Jiangs. JC was skating years before him (I imagine that YZY started him on skates by the time he was like 3/4 and Yanli doesn’t have any talent) and he’s good just not good enough to really stand out. WWX on the other hand started when he was around 9 and he’s a fricking natural on ice. JFM took him for JC training and asked him if he wanted to try, WWX went on the ice and just started to slide like it’s no big deal. YZY was furious but that’s also when JC started to improve since he got a competition. JC doesn’t like to experiment and thinks that it’s best to leave decisions to his trainers and mother since she is a fallen skating star (or maybe a ballerina after her prime idk)

- WWX is loving every minute he gets to spend on the ice. It brings him so much joy and he doesn’t really care about competing with others. Don’t get me wrong he enjoy winning but he enjoy improving his skating even more. Especially since he doesn’t really care about skating the proper way. He experiment, mixes styles, basically putting his creative brain loose and trainers hate it. He want to have a say in the music, choreography and doesn’t compromise easily. He constantly pushes himself just because he enjoy it. I imagine that he would change his jumps in program in the middle of tournament just because he feels like he can pull them off.

- Wen Ning is skating with his sister Wen Qing except she’s studying medicine at university and get less and less time to participate. Wen Ning is talented but shy and get stage fright easily. When he meets WWX for the first time it was at empty ice rink where WN was really showing his skills and Wei Ying as the sunshine he is started to compliment him and encouraging him so now they are basically besties

- WWX and LWJ met at intense skating camp when they were 15 and Lan Qiren was the main couch. At first LWJ couldn’t understand just why can’t WWX skate like any other sane person. He’s talented so why does he feel the need to show off so much and to do things differently. Truly shameless! But you know that he was watching him like a hawk because the fascination (crush) was strong.

- My golden core transfer equivalent in the skating terms although not ideal (I don’t see how golden core transfer could translate in au) would be WWX injuring himself on ice so that JC can take his place in the competition. Why would he do that? While media love the narration of two brothers (even tho WWX wasn’t adopted) on the ice rink the truth is that he spend years listening to YZY telling him that JC skating career is the most important thing and that he should be grateful that he even gets to skate.

-I’m getting tired so this is the last one for now but imagine that wangxian are skating to wuji for their gala performance Yuri on Ice style because they just happened to elope between one competition and the second

What would the characters do for Halloween? 🎃👻

I think that highly depends on whether or not in this AU-where-Halloween-is-celebrated, WWX's birthday is still on October 31! If it is, then the Halloween party is probably gonna be a birthday party as well, right? But let's go with it not being his birthday because then the focus would shift to WWX more than I think you'd like.

Off the top of my head, some random, probably nonsensical and ooc headcanons:

XY absolutely loves trick or treat. It's in your best interest to go with treat and give him every single sugary thing you can possibly find. Trust me.

XXC is on the opposite end of the spectrum: he's very happy to give out candy! 🥰

SL will not personally hand out anything at all, but he's buying enough candy for the neighborhood and then some extra to donate. Yes he and XXC save half a year for that, what's the joint account for if not that?

AQ is very upset that she's A BLIND GIRL and is getting less candy than XY - but XXC makes them pool together their candies and share equally anyway so it's a moot point. Forgets to keep up the blind act sometimes and inspects what candy she's getting and is very displeased. What has this world come to, people aren't buying good candy anymore!

JC is taking JL trick or treating. JL is Too Old For This Jiujiu This Is Embarrassing until he sees wangxian taking LSZ and LJY trick or treating - at which point JL will stop at nothing on his quest to trick or treat better than LJY. He can't ever win because LJY keeps making up competition rules and LSZ is unhelpfully saying all that matters is having fun :) so nothing is ever settled

Addendum to the above: JC and WWX are mutually horrified to realize that JYL taking them trick or treating as kids has stuck with them both and now they're both kinda trick or treating together via chaperoning the juniors? Plus: LWJ and JC glare at each other and WWX conveniently is suddenly very invested in passing on his Halloween wisdom to the kids. Nobody is happy about it.

No, wait. LXC is very happy LWJ is doing something fun! He promises LQR to keep LWJ from getting dragged into trouble by WWX, of course. Gets the rest of 3zun (with NHS and perhaps QS coming attached) and makes sure he never gets closer than two blocks from wherever LWJ is. It's a very pleasant evening 😌

WN doesn't like the crowded feeling of the actual outing but he's very excited to get a party ready for wangxian and the juniors when they come back! He's very proud that they like his arrangements and wants to know all about how it all went. Also: LSZ makes a point of giving him candy and he's very touched

Don't tell WWX that, btw, but LSZ, LJY and LWJ were all trick or treating mostly because it was clearly important to WWX. It's endearing how much he enjoys that kind of thing, from the little children with improvised homemade costumes to the yard skeletons to objectively bad novelty candy

They're not supposed to be alive at this point, so here's an extra, flashback headcanon: the Jin don't do peasant things like begging strangers for cheap candy, so JZX does the whole Halloween routine for the first time after being married to JYL. He takes to it like he takes to planting lotus - that's to say, very awkwardly but very endearingly!

- wwx inspired by kostornaia my beloved — strong skating skills base (because of his parents, then after his parents die he goes to jiang fengmians skating school which puts him in competitive contention. ) jumps are decent but a bit all over the place bc coaches don’t prioritise him, incredible performance charisma, endearing personality but undervalued by federation + school

- wwx could do kostotwilight. and he would. the mental image of wwx doing the twilight ending pose has been haunting me ALL DAY. wwx could do harley quinn. he could do new york new york. he could do departure. tell me i’m WRONG

- i don’t have a solid inspo for lwj but he’s DEFINITELY like those male skaters with the THICK thighs and gorgeous knee bend. i’m picturing glittery outfits, lyrical programmes, strong ss. but maybe low on interpretation. anyway he and wwx are rivals for gold whenever they compete. when wwx drops out he’s undeniable gold.

- lxc style inspired by yuna kim. the excellent all-rounder but kind of quiet/detached from it all. retires after 2 olympics and considered undeniable goat but also out of the competitive scene — on that note, nmj as mao asada??? contemporary and rival with yuna kim, less consistent and less perfect technique, but with higher value jumps and keeps going at it for longer

- i pictured a twin jades side-by-side cantilever and almost burst into tears on the street. like lan brothers would defo have strong core focus stunts. cantilevers. spirals. spread eagles. their edges are so deep i am sweating.

- anyway jiang cheng having a sort of sasha trusova/nathan chen ferocity, strong jumper but ALL over the place, skating skills not too strong but it’s something he wants to work on. later in his career his costumes become increasingly sparkly and scary looking

- jiang yanli/jin zixuan as chock/bates, this one had me cracked up ALL morning,,, nepotism babies, jyl as madison chock aka pretty and girlboss but CANNOT skate, jzx the stronger skater but simps for jyl. fans hate them for being overscored but nobody dares to say anything bc all their fave skaters ADORE jyl. diana davis energy tbh.

wei wuxian names his performance ‘suibian’ (’whatever’) and maximizes points with dangerous stunts that push as close to breaking the rules as possible. he skates with wild, unconventional style that is bursting with raw energy and is exhilarating to watch, making him an audience favorite. he is the highest scoring competitive skater in the country, but his arrogance and tomfoolery rouse the ire of both his peers, who admire and envy him, and his coaches, who implore him to take a step back before he hurts himself.

lan wangji names his program ‘bichen’ (’to avoid worldly matters,’ literally ‘to avoid dust’) and focuses on clean, graceful, steady movements to the sound of the guqin. his bright bluish-silver costume with perfectly matching skates is instantly recognizable. in ‘bichen,’ he illustrates the concept of achieving strength and power through tranquility. as a critics’ darling with impeccable form, lwj is second only to wwx. their rivalry is milked by the media and is a staple of the figure skating scene by now, although the other skaters would tell you that despite their radically different ideas and frequent bickering, they are always in each other’s company at competitions.

jiang cheng performs a thrilling routine called ‘zidian’ (’purple lightning’). its concept is the search for one’s soul. the gentle, stately first half of the routine explodes into a fast-paced, technically challenging performance with an astounding number of spins. jc is known for his unique style of dancelike arm movements between jumps. jc and wwx are like brothers. since they were toddlers, jc and wwx have been coached together on the yunmeng team by skating power couple jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan. however, rumor has it that the coaches shamelessly play favorites among their students, with the most prominent example being jfm’s subtle bias toward wwx and yzy’s outspoken preference for jc, resulting in an unhealthy amount of pressure on the two young men.

jiang yanli skates to the program ‘lianhua’ (’lotus flower’) because yes, lotus pork rib soup is her canon weapon. if yuri katsuki could be a pork cutlet bowl that ensnares men, jyl can be powerful too. anyway. the theme for ‘lianhua’ is eternal consolation and comfort, and her skating style is choreographed with sweeping motions to radiate warmth onto the skating rink. according to the wishes of her coach, jyl is thinking about switching to a pair skating routine with jin zixuan (more on him later). wwx and her brother jc are currently begging jyl to continue her solo career instead. at the same time, the two are investigating, interrogating, and intimidating jin zixuan in case the partnership does happen.

known as the venerated traid, lan xichen, nie mingjue, and jin guangyao all came from the same skating school but ended up on different teams. still, they remained best friends and help with each other’s training, although the relationship between nmj and jgy has become a bit strained. famously, the venerated triad designed their routines to have complementary themes (explained below).

lan xichen’s program is named ‘liebing’ (’cracked ice’). it portrays the restoration of harmony to a world that is falling apart. lxc skates to a piece of music with a prominent flute part. his style is similar to lwj’s but gentler. together, lxc and lwj are known as the ‘twin jades’ of the skating world, both coached on the gusu team by the notoriously strict lan qiren.

nie mingjue performs ‘baxia,’ named after a mythological dragon with the shell of a turtle. the program’s theme is carrying the weight of the world. many criticize nmj for his choppy form, but it is inevitable with his routine being one of the most physically demanding in figure skating history. when he is not training, he drops in as a qinghe assistant coach to his younger brother nie huaisang, who scrapes by at the very bottom of the professional skating scene with lackluster bird-themed routines, more well known for his aviary, art collection, and party attendance than for his skills. although he doesn’t seem to care much about his own skating career, nhs is undeniably nmj’s biggest fan.

jin guangyao names his program ‘hensheng’ (’hating to be born’ or ‘hatred of life’). its theme is survival when the world turns against oneself. in this performance full of angst, jgy’s skating style emphasizes physical flexibility and emotional expression over power. although jgy used to be unknown and does not score very high, his popularity skyrocketed after he exposed the doping scandal of his own team, led by wen ruohan. in a viral interview, he told the story of how he was bullied while on the qishan team. once he became so popular, the lanling team snatched him into their ranks.

jin zixuan calls his routine ‘suihua’ (’the passage of time’). this ambitious program is divided into eight equal-length sections, each representing a different generation of his family, telling a story of wealth and success. his performance, albeit gaudy, is high scoring. along with jgy, he is from the lanling team, which is lavishly funded and grants him access to the best resources. one of his coaches, madam jin, is enthusiastic about planning his partnership with jyl. in fact, she is already working on the choreography. however, jzx is hesitant to give up his solo career, especially as his scores begin to approach wwx and lwj.

[little plot idea]: after a nearly-fatal injury caused by his reckless techniques, wwx must spend a year in recovery. when he is cleared to skate again, he is warned that he cannot attempt his old style of skating without exacerbating the injury. with the help of lwj, wwx readapts his style and returns to the ice with a new program called ‘chenqing’ (’setting forth one’s thoughts,’ ‘explaining one’s actions’). it is about finding beauty in darkness. his movements are aggressive yet elegant, chaotic yet balanced. he seems to have finally found a way to calm his style while maintaining his characteristic edge.

i don’t know how or when to work it in, but because it’s so beautiful and needs to be included, later in their careers wwx and lwj perform a pair skate called ‘wangxian’ (’forgetting envies’). credit to @wackopig​ for this stunning idea.

(after i finished writing this post i got curious and found wip figure skating AU fics that i haven’t read but now NEED to, one by @zizzani​ who has a figure skating fic on AO3, and Rinnoa’s fic on AO3. kudos to y’all doing the lord’s work)

i don’t have the discipline to write a full-on fic and I know nothing about figure skating lol. but i want to do a post for fun with plot ideas later. wen ning and wen qing show up as owners of a small skating rink and hot spring while raising a-yuan, in the way that @wackopig​ made up that i love so much. i think it would be interesting if wn and wq are disgraced members of wen ruohan’s team who got banned from skating due to the doping scandal, but they were forced into taking the drugs against their will and never got their names cleared. also there’s likely a lot of jin ling because i want him to perform his late father’s routine. wwx and lwj coach both lan sizhui and jin ling. also thinking about how to get the yi city folks in here too, because who doesn’t want to see a songxiao pair skate and xue yang doing a murder-themed performance called ‘to cause disaster’? anyway if you have any ideas for plot hmu!

Love your writing and I can tell you've thought a lot about Xue Yang, so I'm going to ask you what your thoughts are on his age in the CQL version? I made a costume post jokingly talking about how he's hot in the Chang massacre scenes and got to thinking and am now worried he was still a minor at that point. I headcanon everyone in CQL as like 18 to start w and was shocked to find out WWX n co were like 15/16 in the novel. From what I could find online, XY's age is up in the air. He refers to himself as a "fully grown man" in that scene. I'm gonna tweak the post probably anyway but I'm curious about your thoughts on his age in CQL specifically. (Also I wonder if you have any thoughts on JGY's age, as he'd have to be at least 18 to ship him w LXC or NMJ without being weird about it. He shares a bday w Peacock. I can't imagine Yanli, who is years older than WWX/JC in CQL, being in love w a 15 yr old at like 19. At least hopefully not.) I hope this all isn't creepy! The age thing has just been bugging me.

I have thought a lot about Xue Yang but I try to think as little as possible about CQL’s timeline because frankly they seem to have kind of gone “the passage of time? what’s that, don’t know her” and thrown any sense of coherence of time passing and what happens when and how long there is between any given scene more or less out the window. 

I mean, just right off the bat we see the show open with “sixteen years ago” for Wei Wuxian’s death, but then for the flashback (at least the translation says) “sixteen years ago” also, which would mean that all the events of the flashback episodes happen over the course of a year, which considering there is I’m pretty sure a canonical year gap and definitely at least a three month gap, and a nine month gap for Jiang Yanli to be pregnant in...is kind of mathematically impossible. 

and it just kind of gets more bonkers from there!!!

as a rule, therefore, I just kind of tend to fling my hands up in the air about ages in CQL and go “WHATEVER! THEY’RE [MUTTERS VAGUE NUMBER] AND I’M GOING FORWARD FROM THERE” because...yeah, I mean, it’s just. bizarre and kind of unintelligible. 

I put Jin Guangyao as close to Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen’s age but a smidge younger, I put Jiang Yanli as about three years older than the Gusu Lan trio, and don’t get too fussed about the age gaps w/r/t pairings because nobody’s getting into relationships until they’re older anyway. 

and there’s a big power imbalance between Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue, for instance, in their early relationship, that has nothing to do with age and everything to do with station and I think if we’re talking about “healthy” relationships (we’re not, that relationship isn’t healthy, it is a mess) then I’d put that as probably the bigger problem.

but also I maybe am not the best person to ask about any of this because besides the fact that I look at the CQL timeline and give up except on relative terms I also tend to be sort of “eh” about the whole “if you ship a character who is under 18 with a character who is over 18 it is pedophilia” because...yeah, there’s just. there’s not a magical line that makes you an adult the day you turn 19, actually, and power dynamics are not all about age, and consent is not all about age, and anyway I’m going to quit while I’m not too far behind.

anyway, all that being said, I do figure that Xue Yang is probably close in age to the main trio in that scene, maybe even a smidge younger (you will meet a lot of teenagers who will claim to be grown up, and also idk what that translation is so I can’t speak to its accuracy) but also I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with going ‘Xue Yang hot’ in that scene because to be frank his actor is...not a minor, and is hot. it’s just kind of how it is.

(I mean, Xiao Zhan is hot in the Cloud Recesses scenes, and he’s supposed to be like 15 there, and I’m not going to pretend he does not look mighty fine in the scene where he’s firing that arrow and does a thing with his tongue. I am a human woman looking at a very nice looking young man who is very definitely not a teenager.)

ok i really wanna dive into this xicheng gymnast au ive got going on because its self-idulgent a really cool idea and ive been really interested in gymnastics recently (little angst bc im a weak bitch)

here are jiang cheng, nie huaisang, wei wuxian designs; ill add more as i draw

so jc, nhs, and wwx are popular rhythmic gymnasts and are a fan favourite in the fandom (?)

jc loves the ribbon but can also do club and rope; nhs does ball, ribbon and club; wwx can do all five (ribbon, ball, hoop, club, and rope) but he likes doing hoops the most

the three of them are pretty close since they have time to chitchat at the small louge area for resting; theyre also often called the powerpuff girls (ppg) since they wear red, green and purple (ik bubbles is blue but just roll w it)

jc has a no. 1 fan, like the biggest jc fan ever, and its a famous musician, lan xichen; literally his social media is filled with jc photos, fancams, and videos (sometimes he posts selfies with his jc merch that me probably made on his own)

ppg knows about lxc and teases jc about him so much

jc performs his routine, gets an unbelievable high score and wins a gold medal (deserve) and on the podium, he asks for a mic and tells the whole fucking world his feelings for lxc

"ive been dating lan xichen, my no. 1 fan, for 8 months and its been the best 8 months of my entire life. its been a secret to everybody we both know because i was too scared to say something, too scared that everybody would reject it and judge us. but now that i realized it has put a strain on our relationship, it made me think. why should i worry about this? why should i be scared? why, when i have him by my side to support me and love me? im so sorry huan-ge that ive made you feel unloved and unwanted because i do love you. i love you so fucking much and it hurts me that you feel this way because of me. i hope that you're here somewhere in the audience to hear this, maybe not since we're not okay, but know that ill do better. ill let myself love you wholy and freely from now on if you'll let me."

cue cue cue lots of crying and hugging and screaming from the audience and probably the medical team rushing in because holy shit lxc did that and jc is still hitting him for almost dying??

social media fucking blows up with numerous photos of jc, videos of jc's speech, photos and videos of lxc and jc and loads of support messages for the two of them

it ends with lxc posting numerous selfies of him and jiang cheng being lovey dovey with a really cheesy caption that probably goes like

"HE HAS NO RIGHT TO MAKE MY KOKORO GO DOKI DOKI" or "i love one (1) man and its my boyfriend- oops i meant fiance"

the end sksks theres other couples in this like wangxian and nieyao but really minor so i didnt put them in BUT how is this story? is it worth writing out? or is it ok as is?

Lan Wangji: the Model Student Edition

AKA Lan Wangji’s costumes in the Untamed, part 1/9 

I got it in my head to write about Lan Wangji’s costumes in the Untamed for a couple of reasons. One, they’re extremely beautiful and worth paying attention to (as are all the costumes in the series!) and two, they do an excellent job of reflecting his mental state and where he is on his journey as a character. Hence, I’ll always look at them from two points of view, what’s actually happening in the costume, and how the choices made tie to what’s going on while he wears it. Note that I’m not going to even attempt to touch on how they connect to actual historical clothing (you’ll need an expert for that, which I’m definitely not).

I decided to make separate posts for each outfit rather than try to cram all of them in one post (or a few posts). I suspect this’ll be long enough anyway, since I’ll cover some common elements in his outfits in this one, and the images also add to the length. I tried not to go too crazy with the number of the images, although I suspect there’ll be more in the latter posts that cover some of his more elaborate costumes. I had a bit of fun with my image choices as you’ll see (also several times I forgot I was meant to capture stuff and just kept watching, as one does 😂).

Without further ado, let’s start with the outfit Lan Wangji had on when he walked into Wei Wuxian’s life. This outfit was worn mainly in episodes 3-7, briefly in episode 8, and also in WWX’s memories in episode 1.

The Costume

In my head this goes in the simple-but-formal category of LWJ’s outfits, meaning he has the full amount of layers on, and the fabrics are of the usual high quality, but they have no particular texture, and there’s not much embroidery. This almost feels like the basic Lan disciple outfit upgraded to a higher level, which goes nicely with the fact that even though he is the Second Jade of Lan, he’s also a student among the rest of them.

First some basics about the robes the Lan Sect members wear, possibly obvious stuff, but I’ll cover it anyway. They are usually made of fairly lightweight fabrics (that move beautifully in action scenes, I might add), although those of higher rank also have robes made of fabrics with more texture and weight. They’re always white or shades of blue, again more blue for those of higher rank (if they so choose), and the cloud pattern is usually embroidered at least somewhere (significantly LWJ has two outfits with no cloud embroidery).

Innermost layer consists of the white pants and the undershirt that seems to be standard for everyone, we see LWJ (in episode 43), LQR (in episode 33), and WWX (in episodes 42-45) all wear similar shirts. The actors aren’t necessarily wearing all the layers due to heat, but we’re meant to believe they’re always there and that cultivators are just immune to the sun or something. (In that bts video where they bicker on the boat we actually see Wang Yibo wearing the undershirt when he pulls back his sleeves, meaning he’s in five layers and somehow looks cool as a cucumber, while Xiao Zhan is dying of heat 😂). Next come two or three sets of robes, possibly always meant to be three, since the Lans are formal like that, but we don’t see that many with every costume. Then comes a sash to keep the robes closed, and for those of higher rank optionally another robe on top (which LWJ and LXC don’t always wear).

Here’s another look at the costume, with a bonus WWX. This was obviously chosen solely because it shows the silhouette very well.

As I mentioned earlier, this outfit has all the elements listed above, including a robe worn over the sash, but there aren’t too many details. The fabric is certainly meant to be silk, and possibly even is. Whoever did the hemming of the robe definitely struggled enough for it to be silk (modern detail that one, btw, you wouldn’t sew it like that by hand. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t just do that, making an invisible hem isn’t actually that slow, but maybe it’s still significant when you need to make so many costumes). The sash is very basic, with no decoration at all, but he of course has the waist ornament with the jade pieces and tassel, which is one of the two things he always wears, in addition to his forehead ribbon. The white shoes are maybe the biggest flex from the Lan Sect, just imagine how much time would be needed to clean and replace all of them, especially since the climate at the Cloud Recesses is definitely rainy, and then there are the night hunts.

Above is the top seen in detail, we have his first head ornament (which is very cute, IMO), and the forehead ribbon. Interestingly it’s pale blue rather than white (as I believe it’s in the book). Blue is slightly less stark against the skin, so that may have been the reason. Then there’s the embroidery on the lapels, the Lan Sect clouds done with white on white, basically the least extravagant you can get and still have them. We only see one more layer, I believe. There’s blue and white in the collar, but looking at how it overlaps I think it’s just one robe with two colors. But hey, a teeny tiny bit of color on him at least!

Another detail to note is that if he has narrow sleeves visible, there are always fabric bands wrapped around the wrists, yet another bit of complexity and formality to his outfits. He also has them with this costume, you don’t see them that many times because the big sleeves cover them pretty well, but we get a nice glimpse of them when LWJ and WWX are tied together with the forehead ribbon in the cave, see below. 

Yes, I capped the moment where they collapse to the ground after getting out of the cave. I have to get my amusement somehow, but it was actually the one where you can see the detail best. 😂 (I also tried the part where LWJ ties the ribbon but all the caps came out blurry, so this one it is). LWJ’s hand is the top one, obviously, and WWX has just a regular sleeve end there.

The Context

When LWJ first walks into the scene in episode 3, he’s at peace with himself in that his world makes sense, he has a clear understanding of who he is and what his responsibilities are. I’m not saying it has come without struggle considering everything to do with his mother (I bet LQR was just thrilled when he moved to the Jingshi, which all things considered probably hadn’t happened that long before the start of the story), but it looks like it’s something that’s been worked out. Also, when I say his world makes sense, I don’t mean that he’s completely happy about everything (if I had to define it, I’d go for comfortably neutral), just that there are no particular issues that he doesn’t know how to react to until WWX comes and turns everything upside down.

Much of the past timeline for LWJ is about his struggle between his loyalty to his sect and what he perceives as his duty, and his connection with WWX. This can be seen reflected in his costumes as well. Broadly speaking (obviously individual scenes can shift the focus for a time), when he wears predominantly white with wide sleeves (his more formal outfits) it signals that he’s particularly conscious of his duty and his upbringing, while his blue outfits with narrow sleeves (arguably more casual ones) come to play when he’s more forcefully pulled by his connection with WWX. Notably, he also wears one mostly white outfit with narrow sleeves, but we’ll get to that later.

At this point of the story, the real struggle hasn’t yet started for him, he’s (mostly) the perfect model student that he was taught to be literally from birth, and his outfit reflects that. He’s definitely thrown by the effect WWX has on him, as it’s most likely a completely new experience, but he also considers it nonsense that he intends to drop (or boring, as he has a tendency to say). When he sets out alone, I’d say it’s with the idea that he can just leave what happened in summer school behind and focus once more on his responsibilities. Clearly there’s some regret that he feels because of it, as we witnessed his undoubtedly warm feelings toward WWX when hearing his resolution in the lantern scene, but right after that moment he focuses on the Yin Iron once more and maybe chooses that road (only he doesn’t get to walk it alone, WWX is stubborn like that).

Next time, blue robes and the point of no return for LWJ just whooshes on its way behind them.

The Untamed vs MDZS Anime: Which is better?

Going to japan now. Currently in the plane. The in flight tv is broken. So... ive been watching mdzs on youtube!

Hot damn the animation is beautiful. Every frame is a work of art. How the hell. Its so beautiful. I mean they use 3D a lot for the backgrounds and boats but its still gorgeous and not too jarring. The lighting is so realistic, scenery too. All the fighting choreography is beautiful. The way the swords swing in the air looks so fluid, and when swords clash its in flashes of light the color of their sword. Such a tasteful yet stylistic choice. Everyone's, esp wwx, hair is so flowy, so detailed every strand sways in the wind. The waves reflect light and move smoothly. How the hell did they do that. How. I was thinking of doing those screencap redraw thingy with the scene when wwx whacks lwj's boat. (they also emphasised how far lwj's boat was sinking into the water, which makes it more convincing how wwx can deduce that theres something underneath vs the live action where lwj's boat looked normal..) it was damn beautiful. The thing is, the point of these redraws is that the animation looks simple, so the redraw would enhance the scene. But for mdzs, everything is already in peak quality, redrawing it will only look worse. Its like writing fanfiction of books. The original writing is so damn beautiful, fan fiction ends up being such a stark difference that the reader cant help but compare the 2.

Drama, as everyone says, shows better facial expressions due to the live actors, so emotions hit harder. But anime def LOOKs way better in all action scenes. Angles that follow the characters are used to emphasise scale between enemy and chracters, and all the movements feel so dynamic, and i love how when they use talisman spell thingies they got a circle of light in an intricate pattern thats super beautiful. In the drama, its just a piece of paper.

However, i prefer drama's lwj. Maybe cos wyb looks so young, its more believable when he freaks out over the adult book that wwx gives him in the library scene. In the anime, he looks 20+-30+. Its a bit hard to believe that he'd be worried over that. Idk theres a kind of innocence and naivety that leads to the stubborn refusal to express emotion that young lwj is plagued with that we have in the untamed (was this intentional on wyb's part or is it because the teenage lwj wig made his eyes look floaty, so he seems more like a teenager and naive, less experienced as a cultivator vs lwj 13 years later? Dk but it works!). In the anime, he looks like an adult thats calm and level headed already from the get-go. Idk maybe i just havent watched enough (only seen up til the water demons in caiyi town). In both anime and drama, everyone and i mean EVERYONE besides the fricking babies looks the same 13/16 years later. It doesn't feel like time has passed at all. I wish they would have maybe a change in costume, or hairstyle in the anime. The drama at least changes their costumes a little and neatens the hairstyle of jiang cheng and lwj to indicate maturity.

Btw i love that in the anime for the water demons section they had wwx and jc casually chatting (though its a blatant cornetto ad which is fricking weird. How can there be frozen treats back in those days), then wwx beautifully catapulting himself onto a boat and rowing away showing the unique and romantic af mode of transport in caiyi town, then smoothly transitioning to the lan bros on the bridge right above them with lwj asking why lxc decided to bring them along. Its just tying together so many scenes, quickening the plot along and yet doing it so naturally and seamlessly compared with the novel and drama.

Though i like that the drama involved wn and wq and have wwx save wn, and makes way more sense why wn would want to risk his life to help wwx recover his parents fricking corpse illegally right under the nose of wen chao and wen zhuliu.

The anime removed the entire mystery plot of a yan and the fairy goddess statue and thats honestly the best best best choice to make. In the drama, it was one of the worse sections ever cos i didnt understand who all these random ass characters were (it was one of the first mysteries in the drama) and yet it didnt go into detail like they did in the novel, so not only did i not know what was going on, i also didnt give a single shit about the characters. When i saw that they completely did away with the random passer bys who screwed around with the fairy statue, i was thoroughly impressed.

I liked that the drama let nhs have his own trouble making moments tho, like having him sneak a live bird into class. It makes it more convincing that wwx would be friends with him because they both have a mischievous side that they can both appreciate in each other. In the anime, nhs just looks like a loser nerd thats weak in swordplay and does wwx's homework for him, without a will of his own. It doesnt make sense why wwx would keep him around. Then again, maybe itll make the reveal that nhs is a conniving mastermind more impactful for the anime, oh well only time will tell.

I liked that lxc and lwj look similar in the anime. Its more convincing when people call them the twin jades of the lan clan. In the drama, they hardly looked like brothers. Lxc looks more like lwj's mentor or teacher rather than an older brother. In the anime, they look more siblingy.

I miss drama wen ning. I rmb when he looked so fierce and terrifying in his first appearance. I was legit intimidated. Oh how hes changed! Hes so fluffy now. In the anime hes equally menacing. His fight scene with the statue goddess was so beautiful. Doesnt it take a long time to animate the chains moving so fluidly yet dynamically yet somehow looks like it can disintegrate rock in an instant? The lighting on it too, how it reflected the fire of the forest around them. Have i mentioned how beautiful having that fight scene at night was? It was dark and ominous looking, yet the fire cast an epic looking light over the scene with warm orange glows. And the animators had that fiery light reflected in anything they could find: eyes, chains, swords.

Ooh but jiang cheng's whip looked prettier in the drama than in the anime, which is kind of weird given they were both cgi-ed. Somehow the lighting of the whip in the drama was brighter, looked more like real lightning vs the whip in the anime looking a little dull, like they colored it then added a gray filter. This is kinda bizarre given the laughably bad effects of the effects for everything else in the drama. Visuals for non human things is not the drama's strong suit, so it makes u wonder what happened for the anime whip. Maybe in the dark, the lightning would have to look hella bright and reflect on the surroundings (tedious to color) more so than in the day, hence why it looked worse in anime vs drama. Oh well.

As for lan sizhui, its weird that his voice is so deep in the anime (and audio drama!). Ive always seen him as a kiddo thanks to the live action, so hearing him sound mature is kinda off-putting. He sounds like a leader, and gives off lwj vibes vs in the live action where he gives a goody two shoes studious nerd vibe, whos just trying his best. Maybe this is better, he feels way more like a lwj-raised child(serious and business-like) which makes more sense. Live action lsz feels like a wwx(optimistic and intelligent) AND lwj(well-behaved and sensible)-raised child. Anime lsz looks like hes got his shit together. Jinling is fairly similar in both, maybe less prideful in the anime (in live action theres the scene where im pretty sure he indirectly kills one of his men by wishing for the fairy goddess statue to come to life. Ive been wondering why all the tumblr posts depict ljy as this sassy ass short tempered kid when he was quite tame (though sassy by lan standards) in the live action. Now i know.

The costumes for the drama is better, more detailed though thats expected i guess. I just love that they have little white gusu lan clan uniforms that wwx jc and friendos are required to wear. Its so cute and such a cool detail. In anime, theyre all in their usual garb, and they just look like random people who decided to turn up at lan qirens class. In the drama, it looks more like a school that they have to attend for half a year and it feels characteristic that gusu lan clan would require their students to have a uniform, given their incredibly strict regime type. It also serves to separate the happy carefree school days from all the other tragic af events in wwx's life. His costume starts out white showing innocence and purity of his naiive teenage years who had yet to experience hardship and still feels invincible as a youth. After school, he wears dark blue, as he goes on an adventure with lanzhan and experience how important the yin iron is (gives up the joking light hearted nature as a teenager by realizing the gravity of situation if the wen clan gets their hands on it) and maybe that hes not truly part of the jiang clan who wears purple. Then his costume eventually becomes black as he experiences his first life and death situation that he isnt sure he can handle. That child like assurance that "oh the seniors will let me off" or "im sure jiang fengmian will come to my rescue" gets demolished when he undergoes cruel indoctrination at the wen clans. This visual development may be a bit on the nose, but personally i love subtle representations.

Overall, the anime does do a better of job of explaining the world's mechanics, which is quite important. The drama is quite faithful to the book, at times even more so than the anime, so it irks me that this is the one thing they decide to skim on. The god damn premise, the first thing the audience needs: why the hell is wwx alive again and what is mo xuanyu doing?? I guess the drama thought that it explains itself but it doesnt really. It was really confusing. The anime, though somehow faster than the drama, still has the time to properly explain mxy. A technique ive noticed is that they do exposition during the fight scenes, which is so ingenius. Its visually appealing, as always, so its not boring, the viewers gets to understand whats going on AND it gives the sense that the characters are so skilled that they carry causal conversations while fighting supposedly weak enemies like zombies and water ghosts, which is accurate seeing how wwx and lwj and friends are supposed to be one of the most powerful cultivators.

Which Sect Would I Choose?

Hmmm, that’s an interesting question! I quess motto-wise it’s the Jiang sect, ‘attempt the impossible’ sounds pretty sweet and I like that they are so down to earth and free, in a way.

The strong hierachry and etiquette within the Jin sect would probably frustrate me to no end and while the Lan sect has a good motto ‘be righteous’, their endless amount of rules is just... oooph. I would probably go crazy and leave the sect at some point (or I would have stayed a quiet wallflower, had I been born into it, but I like who I am now, so... sry for disappointing you, Lan Qiren)

The Nie sect wants honour, but probably not my kind of honour, so that could be problematic. Also they have that dark problem looming over them.

I like the idea of the Wen sect ‘compete with the sun for radiance, match the sun in longetivity’, so with the right leader, it could be quite cool, it’s all up to interpretation

So yeah, I guess the Jiang sect it is - or I’d attempt what XXC and SL wanted to do. I’m a big fan of that. - what about you? <3

Best Fashion

Danggg! I can’t do a rangking, cause I suck at that, but LXC had amazing outfits, esp that dark blue one I drew a while back. Oh and JC!! Man, he dresses up so fashionably! I also adore WWX’s choice of clothes, he got great taste in fashion and I totally get that he doesn’t usually wear long sleeves cause they - are - in - the - way - all - the - time (yet long sleeves are extremely elegant and beautiful). I also loved XXC’s choice, I myself like wearing white and light grey or black for contrast, such a simple yet ethereal aesthetic. Oh and how could I forget my boys XY and JGY! As you can see the more I think about it the harder it gets for me hahaha Now I wanna name them all. Insert everyone, please hahaha

When it comes to my personal taste I’d probably either go for XXC’s clothes or WWX, or both, depending on my plans for the day, you know? haha

Overall I ADORE THE COSTUMES for CQL, big fat kudos to the costume department. From an artist’s perspective there is so much I want to draw bcs of the sheer beauty of it all and how well it fits the characters.

At this point I'm probably following you for the hanfu as much as I am following you for your fics. The red and white couple hanfu you reblogged is making me feel things just thinking of Wei Ying wearing that gorgeous red ensemble. Does he wear it at Gusu for minor special occasions? Does he wear it and other of similar style everyday because of who he married? Does Ouyang Zizhen, LCX and LWJ exchange notes on new fabric shipments and design for A-Qing and Wei Ying respectively. FASHION!

That red outfit (or a similar one) is actually coming up later in Twelve Moons for an occasion that I will not disclose at this time because Spoilers (not the wedding lol), but WWX’s actual official daily outfit after marrying into Gusu Lan is the dark blue hanfu with red and gold embroidery and some purple ribbons/purple lining in the sleeves--blue for Gusu Lan, purple for Yunmeng Jiang, and some red and gold thrown in for that ol’ WWX aesthetic. It’s reblogged right under this post, so you can just scroll down and check it out if you haven’t seen it yet. <3

Wei Wuxian would wear pretty much everything I’ve reblogged under his costume tag, including some plainer, looser-draped styles for daily wear or when he’s working on his vegetable farm, and sometimes he wears black with light blue inner robes if he’s feeling it, but that blue/purple/red one is the official garment of Xinhua-jun, husband to the Chief Cultivator and father of the heir to Gusu Lan. And yes, OYZZ, LXC, and LWJ *constantly* compare notes on fashion and fabric and what would suit A-Qing and WWX best! Their favorite tailors are ones in Gusu, Lanling and Baling for A-Qing, and for WWX they prefer shopping in Qinghe, Yunmeng, and sometimes Meishan Yu. They have designated ambassadors who actually have to keep an eye out for good clothes and seamstresses as well as keeping an eye on inter-sect relations. XD
