Termessos, Pisidia, Asia Minor (Turkey)
(Greek Τερμησσός Termissós) was a Pisidian city built at an altitude of more than 1000 metres at the south-west side of the mountain Solymos in the Taurus Mountains (modern-day Turkey). It lies 17 kilometres to the north-west of Antalya. It was founded on a natural platform on top of Solymos, soaring to a height of 1,665 metres from among the surrounding travertine mountains of Antalya.
For the first time Termessos appeared in the literature on the pages of the Iliad. Homer mentions that Bellerophon, the Greek hero who rode a winged horse Pegasus and became known as Chimera killer, was commissioned by the king of Lycia to conquer Termessos. He managed to force the residents Termessos to surrender by flying over the mountains on Pegasus and throwing stones at the rebels.
Apart from this story, little is known about the ancient history of Termessos. Most probably the city was founded by a Pisidic tribe, the local people related to the residents of Isauria and Cilicia. The same tribe settled in what is now the province of Isparta, where they built the city of Sagalassos. The inhabitants of Termessos called themselves Solymi and that name was, according to Strabo, derived from Solymeus, an Anatolian god who in later times became identified with Zeus. This is evidenced by the coins minted in Termessos with the image of the deity and his name.
The first historical mention of Termessos dates back to 334 BCE. In this time Alexander the Great arrived to the area with a plan to capture Termessos. However, his attempts failed, and the Eagle's Nest turned out to be a more difficult problem than the Gordian Knot. The Macedonian king lost in Termessos a lot of time, but deep gorges and steep mountain slopes provided sufficient defenses for Termessos inhabitants. Finally Alexander decided to leave Termessos alone, directing his army towards Sagalassos. This way Termessos became one of the two cities of Asia Minor, the other being Sillyon, that the Macedonian army was not been able to conquer.
In the Hellenistic period Termessos entered the era of great prosperity, but it was implicated in the conflicts between the heirs of Alexander the Great. One of the generals of the Macedonian king, Antigonos Monophtalmos, after the death of Alexander proclaimed himself the ruler of Asia Minor. Then he declared a war against the competitor for the title - Alcetas, who, at that time, was based in Pisidia.
Alcetas and his companions fled before the huge army of Antigonos to Termessos and city residents vowed to help him. However, when Antigonos lied siege to the city the council of elders decided to hand Alcetas over to him, in order to protect Termessos and quickly sent messengers to Antigonos with the news.
Younger residents of Termessos opposed this perfidy and left the city as a sign of protest against it. Alcetas chose death over falling into the hands of the enemy - he committed suicide and his body was handed over to Antigonos. After three days spent on the desecration of Alcetas corpse the Antigonos army went on their way, leaving the body unburied. Young people from Termessos returned to the city and after learning about the course of events, buried Alcetas with great honors and issued a beautiful monument dedicated to him.
In the 2nd century BCE Termessos took part in a number of conflicts, first against the league of Lycian cities, and then against their neighbors from the city of Isinda. In this period, the city also established their colony under the name of Termessos Minor (also known as Oioanda). During another conflict, this time with Selge, Termessos entered the alliance with the king of Pergamon - Attalos II. This friendship was commemorated by the erection of two-storied stoa, funded by Attalos II.
In the period of Roman domination in Asia Minor Termessos retained considerable autonomy as a "friend and ally" of Rome. The residents of the city could set their own laws, they were also guaranteed the freedom and the right to mint their own coins.
The end to the prosperity and existence of Termessos came with an earthquake that destroyed the aqueduct supplying drinking water to the city. The exact year of this event has not been determined, although it is known that even in the period of early Christianity Termessos was the seat of the bishop. In the 5th century CE the city was already completely deserted, and from that time until its discovery by the modern travelers it fell into oblivion.
On a personal note, Termessos was one of the most challenging sites I covered to date, as most of the information about it was written in an 1800′s book in German, and the rest as a little tourist information to the site, with most photos unnamed and without identification of the building. Exactly because of those reasons, I thought bringing this city to life by supplying an open, English, available, graphic source for public use is of important. I was moved by how many people volunteered and offered to help with this mission.

The sarcophagus of Payava, from the 4th century BC C., was found in the necropolis of the Lycian city of Janto, in present-day Turkey. This stone sarcophagus imitates the wooden box in which the dead were usually placed and is formed by a lower tomb, a solid base and the sarcophagus itself with its cover.

Along the edge of Turkey's Kekova Island lie the submerged ruins of the buildings and walls of an ancient city.  Archaeologists believe that this city is a Lycian sea port from which maritime trade was conducted with other Lycian towns and with various parts of the Greek world.  Because of the threat of piracy, the port was probably heavily fortified and served both as a refuge in times of peril and as an early warning post of danger heading to the Lycian mainland. Along the mainland coastline, along from Kekova, are the chest-like sarcophagus tombs of an ancient necropolis, near the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Teimiussa.  The bay of Teimiussa, surrounded by green hills, made an excellent harbour for Lycian ships.  Further down the coast are the ruins of ancient Simena, which lie below the crenellated ramparts of a ruined hilltop castle, held by the Romans and later by the Byzantine Empire.  Inside the castle is a a small rock-cut theatre, used during Roman times.  A lone Lycian sarcophagus stands in shallow water below the town. Over the centuries Lycia's strategically important location made it a tempting conquest for a succession of Mediterranean powers: Persia, Greece, the Macedonian Empire, the Byzantine Empire and finally the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire.  Lycia also suffered from natural disasters, such as a devastating earthquake that partially sank the sea port on Kekova Island.  Rebuilt and still flourishing during the Byzantine Empire, the port was abandoned by the end of the 8th century because of pirate attacks and Arab raids.  The Lycian coast was not cleared of piracy until the British Navy began patrolling the area during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Ancient Cities in Turkey
Ancient Anatolian (Turkish) Cities, Ancient Cities in Anatolia, Ancient Cities in Turkey
Anatolia-the heartland of Modern Turkey is that region lying to the south of the Black Sea, to the east of the Aegean Sea, north of the eastern Mediterranean Sea and, inland, the Fertile Crescent, and west of the Caucasus-Azerbaijani districts. A very roughly hewn upland region for the most part, it has been both a home and a highway for a bewildering variety of peoples for as long as there have been humans.
This list (Ancient (Turkish) Cities) will give a brief overview of Anatolian chronology from the earliest times to the present. It does not pretend to be complete in any sense; Anatolia is a very large area, and though there have been times, like the present, when it has been completely unified, there have also been many times when fragmented local nations were the rule. In such instances, I have either listed the most significant among local conditions, or simply indicated a general period of local conditions. Even during times of union with large Empires, very often outlying districts were partially or completely autonomous; read Xenophon’s Persian Expedition for an insight into conditions obtaining in the Anatolian highlands of the Persian Empire, during the winter of 401/400 BCE.

Kaleköy lies in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely Üçağız, 15km drive from Demre, Antalya. • This Lycian necropolis of Simena has been home to many civilizations including Byzantine Empire era outpost of the Knights of Rhodes (formerly St. John). • Although the ruined city was rebuilt by the Byzantine Empire, later on it was abandoned due to incursions of the Arabs. • The name Kekova derives from Turkish “Plain of thyme” is encompassed by the Island of Kekova, villages of Üçağız, Kaleköy and four ancient towns of Simena, Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa. Üçağız is founded upon Tiemussa and both Simenna and Teimioussa have large necropolises. • The region is accessible by both land and sea and is a very popular attraction among tourists. # ~~~~~ Camera of choice: Sony #A7M3 #A7III • SEL2470GM ~~~~~ Please follow me @was.once.taken © Mehmet Tekin All of the photos shared are my own. Tomb of Agathemeros
Termessos, Pisidia, Asia Minor (Turkey)
At the highest and most remote area of the extensive burial city, at a place, which offers a view of the Lycian mountain range, surrounded by old pine trees, lies the especially well preserved tomb of Agathemeros. It’s different than the other sarcophagi described; a single sarcophagus on a high substructure. The most outstanding example of its kind in the necropolis of Termessos. The sarcophagus is undamaged except for one hole in a wall; the lid has the shape of a steep roof with big Acroterria and sunken panels in the inclined area. The narrow sides of the box show shields, one of the long sides has a relief of fish holding the ends of a wreath in their mouthes. The coffin box is 1.40 meters wide and 2.50 meters long. It stands on a step, which is built on a quadratic substructure; its sides are 4 meters long. The substructure is 3.80 meters high and is constructed out of many steps and a pedestal with floor and roof cornices. Only one of the four walls of the pedestal is decorated. It is divided in three uneven panels. The left panels shows a dog head, the right one a boar head at the top an inscription.

Kaleköy, is a village of the Demre district in the Antalya Province of Turkey, located between Kaş and Demre, on the Mediterranean coast. Kaleköy faces the island of Kekova, and can be reached by sea or on foot from Üçağız. The village lies amidst a Lycian necropolis, which is partially sunken underwater.  On the northern side of the island of Kekova, you’ll come across the underwater ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient Lycian settlement, which was partly overtaken by the sea due to an earthquake that occurred during the 2nd century. Even though Dolchiste was rebuilt and regained new life during the Byzantine era, the threat of Arabs in the region caused its inhabitants to abandon their town. Only accessible by water, Gulet tours arrive here on a regular basis from Kaş, another very popular seaside town where nature still reigns unspoiled. Even though swimming is forbidden around the sunken ruins, gazing upon them and shooting some photos are quite the experience. However, in Tersane Bay, visitors can swim and take a closer look at the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church, while Akvaryum Bay is also another perfect spot to take a dip in the clear waters.
