ALCHEMY OF SOULS: LIGHT AND SHADOW'S UK, THE 'BAD NEWS' CHOSEN ONE
(a short analysis on Uk in season 2)
I was talking to a friend here about AoS s2 and how Uk being basically overpowered meant the stakes weren't that high during the action scenes (the opposite of s1, where he was learning and growing and the underdog in every nail biting duel), when I realised why this aspect of s2 didn't bother me that much, if at all. Sure, we saw Uk grow into the mage he is in s1, so we feel a lot of pride and our hearts break seeing him so powerful yet lonely, but it's not only that. The entire season deals with the consequences of Uk being so powerful, continuing the storyline started in s1 of Uk being, basically, a Very Messy Chosen One, weird conception included. We remember how in s1, he was treated like shit because he should not fulfil his destiny and come into his powers, he was a Bad Thing Waiting to Happen. Therefore Uk has always been the trigger, in s2 he is also the nuke.
Season 2 answers the questions: What can you do if you're basically a god? How would people react? Can you really come home if you're not who you were before?
And again, it's a perfect continuation of season 1. I saw posts I loved saying s1 shows a perfect asshole/asshole main pairing, describing Uk as self-centred, and they're kinda right. Episode 1 season 1: we see Uk help a wanted assassin escape her fate at the hands of his friends and adoptive family basically, because he needs her. He was never ready to fight for the world, only for himself AND the few he loves (Naksu, Maidservant Kim, his childhood friends). Take this kind of person... and give him the power to not only be a magical overpowered prodigy and incredible warrior, but also a (technically rightful) king. On top of that, make him heartbroken because the only person he loved and wholly trusted killed him. It's a disaster.
This is how we meet Uk in s2, struggling to and outright avoiding answering these questions. He lives as a husk of himself, separated from society, using his powers in a very limited way. Inaction is the only way, he thinks, to avoid war. He is kinda right: the moment he starts wanting things again, the moment he acts again (the moment Cho Yeong is back in his life), he becomes an enemy. His existence is the reason why Jin Mu manages to turn so many to his cause: if power like this exists and walks among us, why should we settle for anything less?
In the end, Uk has to grimly embody Jin Mu's ideals: someone so powerful can amass even more power and do basically whatever he wants, even burn the representatives of 8 main families alive. He is also, again, the Chosen One of the Bad, Terrible News: the awakening of the fire bird could not be stopped, even if it is one of the main quests of 'normal people' throughout s2.
The shift in Uk in season 1 was spectacular, satisfying, hard won, flashy: from a ridiculed pampered noble to one of the most powerful mages of the country. The shift in season 2 is just as important, but internal. It's Uk choosing to do what's right –killing the soul shifters, even if it's Naksu, even if it means not killing Jin Mu himself–, and choosing to do what's right for the world, even if said world can't accept him in full. Uk giving his golden medallion to the Crown Prince isn't just the culmination of the two finally reaching an understanding, but Uk knowing he, powerful as he is, can decide the shape of the future of the country. Without his approval, the Crown Prince could never have become the king.
Finally, of course, the reason why Uk can grow is the same in both seasons, his bond with Cho Yeong. First she is his master, bringing him to full powers, helping him face his destiny, then she is his true companion, the only person who can stand beside him and help him find his rightful place in the world. Season 2 is very different from season 1, but all the good elements are there, and without it, season 1 would not end properly. I understand why some people say season 2 felt unnecessarily fanservice-y (there are standard moments of badassery on Uk's part and romance tropes abound), but actually season 2 is more profound and thought-out than one may think. Or maybe I just love Uk too much and this is just a long and unnecessary tumblr post.
alternative title of the series: uk and the very bad, terrible prophecies where he becomes a god

For all my hipster pretensions, I do love Hunter. I also love the hyperspecific intricate, intense, and often erotic relationships everybody’s agent OCs have with him. It got me thinking about him and my own agent, and honestly?
He disappointed her. Deeply, and personally.
Like, okay, despite her misplaced fealty to the Empire, this is a woman who's had almost exclusively bad interactions with Force users in both camps. Her Sith grandfather belittled and tormented her for the crime of being born without her sister's powers. Her mother, his apprentice, only risked enough interference to keep her alive. When the same sister she was always compared to abandoned her and escaped to the Jedi (who then never let them contact each other again), Lyde only narrowly avoided being sent to Korriban in her place.
And then when she made it to Intelligence, Darth Jadus maimed her, compromised the missions of her employers, and critically endangered the Empire. One of her first missions as a faux-turncoat to the Republic was tracking down and incapacitating a fallen Jedi. The protégé she gained on Hoth? Another semi-Force sensitive, hiding from the Sith. Sith meddling dissolved Imperial Intelligence; Sith infighting ate up resources and cost Imperial lives on Corellia.
And, of course, the Dark Council called for her brainwashing, and a former Jedi abused it.
Sure, like Hunter said, the Star Cabal was never recruiting. There was no incentive for him to care about gaining Lyde's allegiance when he already had the remote to her shock collar, so to speak. But, holy shit, he had no clue how many concessions, how much sympathy to his cause he could have wrung out of the woman designated Cipher Nine, if he hadn't made her his whipping girl. If things had gone juuust a little bit differently, Hunter might've turned over the Black Codex, implored her to take care of it with his dying breath - and she might have fucking done it. Nobody, not the SIS, not Sith Intelligence, not even her former ImpInt superiors would have ever seen that data ever again.
But Hunter wasn't that sort of guy. What sort of guy he was learned Cipher Nine's codeword and used it every chance he got. He didn't have to pretend to play nice with her like with his other colleagues, so he made a point of whisking her brain like cake batter, and acted like it was the funniest thing in the world.
When the Dark Council pushed for Lyde's brainwashing, and when Ardun Kothe used it to control her, she was furious - but she wasn't offended. They're trained and powerful Force-sensitives, and as far as she's concerned it's in their nature to sting.
Hunter, though?
Hunter was a fellow frog.

Lydes still hasn’t figured out just what exactly needs to happen for him to order a cappuccino instead, but he’ll find out one day.
Every day, Lydes puts a smile on, takes care of him like any other customer, and pretends that he doesn’t know that Asmodeus is Mortenute, the villain that has been terrorising the ‘city’ — and by city, really only the rich and powerful and the predators — and being a pain in the ass for the lawful authorities.

This carefully kept relationship changes the moment Asmodeus brings a little girl into the shop.

— (Morrigan & Geneviève)
.
A witch and her woodcutter. 🖤
.
Have I shared Geneviève on here yet? Geneviève de Lydes, a warrior of unknown origin who was disgraced from the Orlesian army under mysterious circumstances. She made it her mandate to travel the lands of Thedas and help those in need in an effort to redeem herself. Coincidentally, this nudges her into the arms of a certain Witch of the Wilds – and by extension, her skeptical son!
Morrigan brings Geneviève back from the brink of death after being inflicted with a near-fatal injury on a quest. To repay her, Geneviève insists on making herself useful, which leads to her becoming Morrigan and Kieran’s unofficial woodcutter/labourer/strongwoman. Through trials and tribulations and the passage of time, Geneviève slowly becomes the cornerstone of what is to be an adorable patchwork family, and regains a sense of self-worth along the way.
One day I’ll write a full fic for her - one day!

well then just to bother you, one of my favourite questions to ask friends: if you were to release a musical concept album, what genre would it be? What looks what inspirations, whatever you think you’d love putting out in the world. (Have a nice day!)
—lyde
My friend and I got like THIS 🤏 close to writing a musical about Elizabeth I based on the music of Lady Gaga. I have absolutely no idea what our plot was going to be anymore, it was our standard drunk chat as much younger creatures than we are now, but if I were to create a concept album it would be that.
It's not quite the question you asked but it is my answer.

Catherine was a patron of the arts, literature, and education. The Hermitage Museum, which now occupies the whole Winter Palace, began as Catherine's personal collection. The empress was a great lover of art and books, and ordered the construction of the Hermitage in 1770 to house her expanding collection of paintings, sculpture, and books.
The collection soon overgrew the building. In her lifetime, Catherine acquired 4,000 paintings from the old masters, 38,000 books, 10,000 engraved gems, 10,000 drawings, 16,000 coins and medals and a natural history collection filling two galleries, so in 1771 she commissioned Yury Felten to build another major extension. The neoclassical building was completed in 1787 and has come to be known as the Large Hermitage or Old Hermitage.
In London in 1787, Catherine acquired the collection of sculpture that belonged to Lyde Browne, mostly Ancient Roman marbles. Catherine used them to adorn the Catherine Palace and park in Tsarskoye Selo, but later they became the core of the Classical Antiquities collection of the Hermitage.
Catherine's collection of at least 4,000 paintings came to rival the older and more prestigious museums of Western Europe. Catherine took great pride in her collection and actively participated in extensive competitive art gathering and collecting that was prevalent in European royal court culture. Through her art collection she gained European acknowledgement and acceptance and portrayed Russia as an enlightened society.
Catherine went on to invest much of her identity in being a patron of the arts. She was particularly fond of the Roman deity Minerva, whose characteristics according to classical tradition are military prowess, wisdom, and patronage of the arts. Using the title Catherine the Minerva, she created new institutions of literature and culture and also participated in many projects of her own, mostly play writing. The representation of Catherine alongside Minerva would come to be a tradition of enlightened patronage in Russia.

3 - General: An assassin is here. PC: Someone here is working for Tevinter. Celene: To the uninitiated, the court is full of intrigues which might seem sinister, Inquisitor. But they are of little note. [4]

Celene: Your modesty does you credit, and speaks well for the Inquisition. Feel free to enjoy the pleasures of the ballroom, Inquisitor. We look forward to watching you dance. [8]
7 - General: Call off the ball! PC: You’re in danger. End the ball. Send everyone away. Celene: Inquisitor, we suspect that our court has overwhelmed you. You may benefit from a glass of wine and some time to recover. No doubt you will find something in the ball room to entertain you. [8]

A World With You, Chapter 52: A Long Day's Night
We're going to the Winter Palace baby 😎
Read on AO3 | Read from the beginning
“What’s the word, Sparkler? Getting ready for the big day?”
Varric was behind his desk, scratching away at a piece of parchment. He glanced up at him over his glasses when Dorian set the armful of books he’d been holding down at the edge of the desk with a sigh.
“You could say that, if ‘getting ready’ includes making sure Skyhold doesn’t collapse in my absence,” Dorian said, taking that moment of respite to shake out the numbness in his hands. He’d been arranging and rearranging the scrolls and manuscripts Helisma had misplaced during their trip to the Dales, and updating the archiving ledgers to make sure the new apprentices that had joined their ranks would be following it as closely as possible. Introducing some order to the madness that was the Skyhold library’s archiving system —and most of the Southern Circles, as he had come to find out— was no small feat, but Dorian was nothing if not determined. “So far, the endeavour has been rather fruitful, but you know what they say: Minrathous wasn’t built in a day.”
“If anyone can do it, Sparkler, it’s you,” the dwarf chuckled as his pen kept leaving elegant scribbles in dark ink on the smooth parchment. “Never you mind, though. In a few days, you won’t have to think about it at all. You’ll be far, far away, drinking the finest Orlesian wines while mingling with the best Thedas has to offer.”
“Or the worst, depending on how one looks at it.”
“Those are even better,” Varric said with a smile. “Have you been brushing up on your Orlesian? You’ll probably need it. Since I’m not coming, I’ll need you to be my eyes and ears for all the drama and the gossip. I’m counting on you.”
“Oh, I am certain there’ll be enough of that in the reports we’ll be bringing back for you to fill three books.”
“Reports?” Varric scoffed and shook his head. “Nothing interesting is ever in those. I don’t want the nitty and gritty and dry bare bones of it— I want the juicy, tasty bits. I don't just want to know who killed the Viscount, but what is the killer’s favourite drink? Does he have an unusual mark on his face, hidden behind his mask— is there an evil twinkle in his eye? How did he seduce the Viscount’s mistress, and convince her to sneak him in through the window in the dead of night? Now that is where all the juice is.”
“My dear man, if I ever find the answers to these questions, I’ll be writing the book myself," Dorian said, propping himself on the edge of Varric's desk with a devilish smirk. "Yet I somehow doubt they are going to be found anywhere near the champagne fountain, as this is where I hope to be for most of the night. They do have champagne fountains in Orlais, don’t they? Or is that particular architectural marvel strictly a Tevinter thing?”
“One more piece of information you must be sure to relay once you get back,” Varric winked. “Can’t keep our loyal readers in the dark, can we?”
“Oh, I wouldn’t dare.” Dorian chuckled. Skyhold was buzzing with excitement, the residents as well as the visiting nobles and dignitaries falling like flies upon every piece of news of the Grand Masquerade. Dorian couldn’t say he wasn’t sharing the enthusiasm. It had been far too long since he’d found himself in anything resembling a ball in far too long — Lady Josephine had still been unable to secure an invitation for him to the Grand Ball of Lydes, so the Winter Palace was clearly the next best thing. As much as the Iron Bull and Sera tried to convince him that the impromptu drinking parties they held at the tavern every week were better, Dorian refused to be swayed. ‘No one knows how to party better than the Orlesians,’ was the age-old adage, and Dorian was finally about to put that to the test.
Just as he was about to pick up his books and take his leave, a woman came up to them, followed by a servant carrying several bolts of fabric. She was dressed in an extravagant red and blue dress, its high puffy collar hiding most of the lower part of her face, while the rest was covered by her silver mask and her large, flower-bedecked hat.
“Bonny, my dear,” Dorian greeted her with a wide smile. “Is this the fabric I requested? You are a delight.”
The merchant inclined her head. “Of course,” she said. “Two days earlier than agreed, and at no extra cost to you, my lord.”
“Ah, but that’s splendid! And at just the right time,” Dorian said, inspecting the bolts the servant held in his arms. He had taken every care in selecting them, and he was sure his tailor would find those best suited to the designs Dorian had selected with relative ease. Southern mages had a certain reputation when it came to fashion —mainly, that they had not a clue about it— and he knew he could hardly count on Solas to amend that. Dorian had thus taken it upon himself to be the best dressed at the ball— after the Empress herself, of course. There was being ambitious, and there was being over-eager; never a good look. “Take them straight to the undercroft, if it isn’t too much bother? Harrit will know where to place them.”

HOME BOY AND THE C.O.L. ‘HOME BOY AND THE C.O.L’ (1982)
Cecil Johnson Lyde Holden aka “Home Boy” (born 1948) is an artist whose musical talent has been unmistakable since his days as a young boy. Growing up listening to his parents 78 RPM Doo-wop, Blues, Jazz and Gospel records, he started signing in church when he was 6 years old. At the age of 10, his mother took him to the famous Club DeLisa (Chicago’s celebrated night spot) and entered him in a talent contest where he won first price singing “Only You” by The Platters. This key-event had sparked a burning desire and a love for music in Cecil that would never leave him…it created an opportunity for him to become an entertainer and recording artist.
Flash forward to the 1960’s when he met Mr. Otis Leavill who was one of the leading figures in the Chicago Soul scene. Leavill was already a well-established recording artist, producer, recording studio co-owner and talent scout (he discovered Yvette Stevens aka ‘Chaka Khan’). Guided by his now mentor, Cecil was exposed to professional studio recording work and productions. He began to work with Otis’ roster of artists, developing his own songwriting skills and musical style in the process. Later he started working with many of Chicago’s great musical talents of the time: Curtis Mayfield, The Chi-Lites, Major Lance, Gene Chandler, Barbara Acklin…and countless others. Cecil Lyde helped recording songs for Chess, Brunswick and St. Lawrence Records. Sadly, by the early 1970’s Chicago’s famous “Record Row” (the area where all the independent record companies were located) started to close down and as a result many bands broke up.
Not discouraged by the closing of “Record Row”, Cecil and some of his childhood singing buddies (under the name of Experience II) landed a production deal and found themselves signed to Capitol Records in 1973. The single ‘Bout Time I Told You Baby’ was well received and became a hit. Later on Cecil Lyde, Bruce Fisher and Rick Giles formed the group ‘Lyde, Fisher & Giles’ aka ‘Stone Free’ who released a privately pressed (and now very rare) promo 7inch titled ‘Serve Me Right To Suffer’…but before the band could fully materialize, Bruce Fisher left the group and went on to write songs for Quincy Jones and Bernard Purdie. Rick Giles also went his separate way to write hits for Earth, Wind & Fire.
As a result of all these tumultuous Chicago events, Cecil was convinced he needed to take the next step and make the move to Los Angeles. It was here that he recorded/produced his first solo album “Stone Free” (1980) and put the genius of many of LA’s finest session players to good use on his two magnus-opus recordings “Home Boy And The C.O.L. (the cost of living)” & “Out Break” (both released in 1982 and 1984 respectively).
Looking for a new direction in the mid 1980’s, Cecil moved on to radio and music promotion/marketing. The rise of the internet brought more exposure and much overdue appreciation for Cecil Lyde’s story. Audiences from Beijing to the UK have now discovered his unique style and his albums are now highly priced collectables, searched for by fans and collectors around the globe.
The album we are proudly presenting you today (Home Boy And The C.O.L.) is Cecil Lyde’s self-titled debut under the ‘Home Boy’ name and was released in 1982 on his own label Alwest Records. The whole album is backed by a fantastic cast of all-star players that includes John Stephens (Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder), Fred Brown (Gwen McCrae), Rommel Sinclair (Fred Wesley), Gary Bell (Lionel Hampton), Carl Lockett (Pharoah Sanders, Chuck Mangione) and Terry Carter (Swamp Dogg).
These recordings (ten songs in total) are particularly interesting to boogie-enthusiasts because of their high doses of funky twerks, solid grooves, crazy synth work, excellent drumbeats and Cecil’s soulful Doo-wap influenced vocals. This album just oozes Soul, Funk and Boogie…you’ll quickly find yourself shaking hips the moment the needle hits the first track! Also included are the tracks ‘I’ll Make It On My Own’ (which became a hit in the UK’s Norhern Soul scene) and ‘Home Boys Revenge’ which was later remixed by DâM-FunK (Stones Throw Records). All of the above makes this LP an essential purchase for any self-respecting fan and collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl reissue of “Home Boy And The C.O.L.” originally released and privately pressed on Alwest Records in 1982. This rare record (original copies tend to go for LARGE amounts on the secondary market) now comes as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition, strictly limited to 1500 copies worldwide with obi strip and features the original artwork.
180g Black vinyl ( w/obi strip) left-over copies are now available to order from www.lightintheattic.net

The only good thing my lovely liar did to go against annoying tropes was to have the female lead’s ex being a sane correct person who while still in love with her respects her life decisions (as much as he can when he thinks the new guy is a murderer 💀) and tries to do his job well. Also the actor has the most likeable face I’ve seen in a while, he has good eyes

1, 8 and 25 for the writer asks? 💚 (I hope you have/had a great day. It bring me joy to see your name on my dash and when I see I’m not alone being ace on main —lyde)
hi lyde!!!
you 🤝 being ace on main 🤝 me
1: is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?
so i was holding off on both the star wars and princess bride aus until i finished a series of questionable decisions but i completed that about ten minutes ago so! i can finally write those and i’m really excited about it! also, fish store au, but i still need a vague plot for that one before i can actually start
8: favourite genre to write?
i don’t think i have one! i just write whatever i want to at that point so. a mixture of genres i guess.
25: copy/paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you’re particularly proud of
here’s part of the aforementioned ASOQD chapter that i’m pretty happy with:
Nicky looks at Joe, at the way his eyes sparkle in the light, and thinks oh.
It’s not life-changing. It doesn’t turn Nicky’s world upside down. It’s a simple, quiet understanding, a warm feeling like sunlight in his chest. Time does not freeze in its tracks. The world keeps spinning, but just a little brighter than it had been before. It almost feels like an inevitability - of course he loves him, because how could he not?

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? now i’m covered in the colours, what I think is my most popular fic, a soulmate au from the very early days of the foxhole court fandom; the bittersweet between my teeth, another foxhole court au!; throw me that smile, a small fluffy foxhole court fic, also from the very early days of the fandom (hence the kudos? I assume?); and spin him to the ground, aka my tog jn sex pollen fuck or die au, which is a lot of Words put together when you describe it like that; and In All Its Forms, which is a series of short tywin/sansa (you are reading that correctly) fic in different aus that i wrote and posted in 2014, yes it’s weird, yes i regret it, whatever.
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to respond to comments! But in general I only manage it in the first few days after a fic is posted, because after that I go ages without opening ao3 on laptop where I do the replying, and, well. Then I get overwhelmed [hides]
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I don’t really like angsty endings? Happy endings all the way!!! I prefer my suffering to be... in the middle, or in the beginning. Just not in the end. But I guess if you think of marriages are made in heaven, which is the first part to a very long fic, and ends on a bad note... maybe that’s the one!
7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written? The craziest one I’ve ever written would be a Justin Bieber x Doctor Who AU. The craziest one I’ve ever posted, ASOIAF x Doctor Who... lmao
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? A couple of times! I think the worst one was a couple of years ago, when someone decided to leave me a long, dedicated comment about why my fic, which had one a little prize for the posting website’s challenge, sucked, actually.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I do! I don’t know what kind I’d call it...? Uh, smut...like... smut? Kind of improbable smut? Idk, sometimes the fic just vibes that way.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I really hope not lmaooo
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I have not! But I’d love to do it someday, which like, hint hint to anyone. @nicolodigenovas you brought it up not me :eyes
12. What’s your all time favorite ship? Haha, people can choose favourite things? Lol
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for? A little hindi TV series from 2007 called ‘Miley Jab Hum Tum’. Best show on Indian Television, ngl-
14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Ohhhh this is hard. I will cheat and say: my favourite complete fic is the bittersweet between my teeth. My favourite WIP is definitely still Yo Fic, aka the full version of marriages are made in heaven, just because it’s so personal to me (lol reader-insert jokes)... and my favourite TOG fic of mine is and spin him to the ground! ^^
Thank you so much Lyde for the tag!!! I am tagging @chinchillinator @polarcell and @devouring-time + anyone who wants to do this xoxo

Second, I've been writing a bit in the background... Just after my marathon of writing 70k in 6 weeks for my Big Bang fic, I kind of crashed lol

For years, Hawai‘i has been packaged as a picturesque paradise. A place where mainland travelers could forget the worries of home. The problem? Hawai‘i’s land, history, and people are often ignored or trampled. Chris Colin reports on the locals who are pushing back.

Portrait of Elisabeth depicting her long hair (by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1864), one of two so-called "intimate" portraits of the empress; although its existence was kept a secret from the general public, it was the emperor's favourite portrait of her and kept opposite his desk in his private study.
Elisabeth practiced demanding beauty routines. Daily care of her abundant and extremely long hair, which in time turned from the dark blonde of her youth to chestnut brunette, took at least three hours. Her hair was so long and heavy that she often complained that the weight of the elaborate double braids and pins gave her headaches. Her hairdresser, Franziska Feifalik, was originally a stage hairdresser at the Wiener Burgtheater.
Elisabeth used these captive hours during grooming to learn languages; she spoke fluent English and French, and added modern Greek to her Hungarian studies. Her Greek tutor, Constantin Christomanos, described the ritual:
Hairdressing takes almost two hours, she said, and while my hair is busy, my mind stays idle. I am afraid that my mind escapes through the hair and onto the fingers of my hairdresser. Hence my headache afterwards. The Empress sat at a table which was moved to the middle of the room and covered with a white cloth. She was shrouded in a white, laced peignoir, her hair, unfastened and reaching to the floor, enfolded her entire body.
