Chaos human that I am, I’m absolutely loving for the way everyone’s falling like dominoes into a read of Lynsay Sand’s Highland Bride series. I love this absolutely bonkers Romance series and it’s so much fun watching everyone else fall for it too

You know what's funny? I was bitching last week about how cringe mafia romances with the bloody sheet on display the morning after are, but now I'm reading a Scottish romance where the sheet is on display at the wedding feast (they anticipated their vows and the heroine's all gung ho like "oh yeah my brothers must have hung that up") and I'm cackling in the corner like it's the greatest thing.

Serie purtroppo inedita in italiano, ma Lynsay Sands è una garanzia se cercate trame diverse dal solito, e ironiche. Poi anche lei ha libri più o meno riusciti. Ad esempio il secondo libro di questa serie non è un gran che, perchè in parte riprende la trama del primo libro dal punto di vista della sorella e del migliore amico dei protagonisti di quel romanzo, ma il primo libro è veramente spassoso se non cercate verosimiglianza storica o logica in un romance. Con cadaveri occultati messi sottoghiaccio, scambio di identità tra gemelli e rocamboleschi piani destinati a fallire è veramente diverso dai soliti romance. E queste tre sorelle sono proprio atipiche, specie Christiana.

La serie racconta la storia di tre sorelle, principesse di un piccolo stato germanico e vittime di un misterioso complotto. Rimaste orfane di madre in tenera età, e ora di padre (una di loro è anche rimasta vedova) le tre ragazze fuggono da loro paese e si rifugiano in Inghilterra da loro zio, il Duca di Olympia.E’ chiaro che il Duca è un uomo con le mani in pasta, e una spia che coordina altre spie, come ad esempio la governante che aveva dato alle ragazze e che si è rivelata un prezioso alleato….ma non è chiaro esattamente chi siano i buoni e chi i cattivi e chi sia dietro agli attentati alla vita delle tre ragazze.Così il Duca decide di nascondere le ragazze, travestite da uomini, presso degli uomini importanti ignari della loro identità, che però spera finiranno per…interessarsi a loro e proteggerle….Come potete ben capire dalla trama principale questi libri non sono privi di difetti, anzi. Il fatto di travestire tre principesse giovani e belle da uomini senza che nessuno si accorga dell'inganno, non è molto plausibile come anche il fatto che i piani strampalati del duca sui loro futuri matrimoni funzionino così bene….ma ci sono anche buoni spunti e idee e i personaggi, alcuni in particolare riescono a catturare il lettore.

I was once reading a book where the Authors choice of origins for vampires was Atlantis. A place I have only ever truly associated with merfolk when it came to supernatural topics. I put the book down and never touched it again. I give them props for wanting to introduce a new possibility, but I didn’t want to read a book that confuses my brain on if I am reading a vampire book — or a blood craving deep sea creature evolving to walk amongst humankind.

Do you have any recent favorite HR?

I do! I recently started reading Kathleen Ayers, and while her older stuff is a little questionable on the race front, her newer series The Beautiful Barringtons was great. Specifically The Theory of Earls and The Design of Dukes. The Design of Dukes in particular has a pretty damn great reverse Westcliff-Lillian scene where the stern uptight duke, Granby, is tipsy and the heroine is sober when they have sex for the first time. Also, Granby and Andromeda's hate -> love relationship progression gives both It Happened One Autumn and Pride and Prejudice (he doesn't approve of her family) vibes in the best way. This series also includes A Recipe for a Rogue, featuring a silver fox who likes to cook and licks a lot of said cooking off his heroine's thighs. Which is inspired tbh.

I read a few Eva Leigh books and my favorites were in her Last Chance Scoundrels series. It's just really good, solid HR with two mildly fuck-up rakish heroes (the third book, A Rogue's Rules for Seduction comes out on April 25th and this hero fucked up REAL hard with the woman he loves and I'm SO excited. See: this semi-hysterical list) and the heroines both harbor some unconventional ambitions. Would recommend.

Lynsay Sands is another author I've recently started reading. I really do enjoy medieval romances and Lynsay's are set in Scotland which is a bonus. I'd recommend her Highland Brides series for anyone looking to read beyond the regency era, particularly since medieval books are less "staid" than their Regency/Victorian counterparts, in part because it's more survival focused. As a result they say/do a lot of shit (sexually and otherwise) your average Regency romance wouldn't have, which is refreshing.
