JUST READ: The 4th Domain by M. John Harrison (2014).
Tumblr media
A short story by a writer I knew nothing about until a recommendation a couple of days ago by a friend. I loved this story. Strange, disjointed, shifting realities, yet still rooted in the everyday. Now I need to read more!

Perhaps the worst discovery of all is that you don’t even have to be very good at something to ache from missing it.
— M. John Harrison, in Nina Allan's Wish I Was Here by M John Harrison review – a masterly ‘anti-memoir (The Guardian, May 12, 2023)

I'm reading a short story collection that's all this genre of low key English social dread. And that is fine in small doses but if I read too much of that, I start to feel...not good in myself. Like everything is light grey and there's a (metaphorical) shadow policeman peeking out sternly behind everyone's eyes. Do you know what I'm talking about?
