The triumph of spring.
I'm so happy I managed to get this done in time for Mărțișor☺️
In Romanian Mărțișor is the name for the holiday of the 1st of March; the traditional name for the month of March and the talisman made out of red and white threads twisted together and with various lucky charms attached, that are exchanged on the 1st and worn during the month of March. A long time ago I illustrated the legend of the hero that freed the sun and kept wanting to do some of the other legends about Mărțișor.
Winter had reigned over world for a long time, putting the Earth to sleep and fobidding anything from growing, when a young girl appeared. She wondered the empty woods searching for her fate when, one day, she came across a snowdrop flower bursting through the snow beneath a dry thornbush. She decided to help the flower thrive and cleared the thorns and snow. The Winter queen was angered by the snowdrop's defiance of her rule and sent a blizzard to kill it. The girl did not allow that to happen and covered the little flower with her hands. She did not budge for 9 days, though the lashing of the winds bloodied her hands. Though the blizzard raged, the warmth of her blood awoke the Earth from his slumber. He declared the time time of Winter passed and crowned the girl the new queen of the world, giving her the name Spring.

Did you know that March 1st means the beginning of spring, for Romanians, it is closely linked to the tradition of offering mărțișor, an ancient symbol celebrating the change of seasons and the rebirth of nature. Last year, a bill was even submitted to the Senate calling for 1 March, the day of the "Mărțișor", to become a national Romanian holiday. The aim was to promote the traditions associated with Marțișor. Only that Romania has already had this obligation since 2017 when the Mărțișor entered the select list of UNESCO intangible heritage.

Spring is coming symbolically with one of the most beautiful local customs (to be sure, Bulgarians have the same custom).
Mărțișor is an old tradition celebrated all over Romania every year, on March 1st. The name Mărțișor is a diminutive of March (Martie in Romanian). On this day, Romanians buy silky red-white threads (șnur) tied into a bow to which a small trinket (or, as in this picture, Spring flowers) is attached and offer them to their (female) family members, friends and colleagues to show friendship, respect or admiration. It is believed that the person who wears the red and white string would enjoy a prosperous and healthy year. In eastern Romania ( Moldavia and Bukovina), the red and white string was complemented with a small - gold or silver - coin. After wearing the coin for twelve days, the women would buy fresh cheese with it, hoping that their skin would be healthy and beautiful the entire year.
Much like in Bulgaria, the custom is clearly very old, pre-Christian and linked to fertility cults. Mărțișor trinkets initially consisted of small river pebbles, colored in white and red, stringed on a thread and worn around the neck. They were worn, to bring good luck and good weather, from March 1 until the first trees would bloom. When the first trees were flowering the Mărțișor were hanged on tree branches.

ALSO DID YALL NOTICE THE МАРТЕНИЧКИ/MĂRȚIȘOR ON BUL'S CHEST AND RO AND MOL'S HATS
basically мартенички are red/white twisted threads that are given out to friends, relatives, colleagues on 1st of march in bulgaria, it has an ancient balkan pagan origin
in romania, they have mărțișor which is something similar but it's worn mostly by women and kids, men wore it rarely
basically these red/white threads are tied to blooming trees if u see a swallowtail or a stork or a blooming tree, the point of the custom is to bring fortune to the wearer (in bulgaria, there used to be this custom where u put the martenitsa under a big rock and later, you'd look under the rock and make omens based on what ur seeing - types of bugs, worms, etc)
also, interestingly, there's the figure of баба Марта in bulgaria and the figure of baba dochia in romania - they're some sort of temperamental grandmas who can be very cruel, bulgarian baba marta can be angry but she can also quickly become calm and happy, this references the quick weather changes in march
perhaps there was some sort of dacian/thracian elderly female deity that had something to do with fertility, fortune and spring? maybe this is the origin of the holiday?

This morning I wanted to make a post about "Martis" ( Balkan costume ), but what I started to make came out to be earrings and not "Martis". Sfânta Marți, the one not happy to be here.
Marți(Tuesday) is the day that accumulated most of the negative energies in Romanian folklore, being embodied by a very capricious and usually mean spirited being with 9 different faces, both male and female depending on who sees her. It is said that the fabric of reality was woven on the first Tuesday, but unlike her elder sister Luni who blesses all beginnings in honor of the bit of creation done on her day, Marți curses all begnnings and endings on her day, seeing them as a vain attempt to rival God. So there's a long list of superstitions, what you should and shouldn't do to avoid her wrath: do not start a journey on a Tuesday, do not start weaving or plowing or any other long term work, leave the last stitch on a garment for another day, do not move in a new house, do not propose on this day etc, etc, etc. Marți also gained the cusre of the 3 ill hours which are random every Tuesday and bad things are prone to happen as a result of a murder being commited on her day-sometimes the first murder, other times just a really bad one(Craliu Marcu killing his son Gruicea to take his bride; Stefanita killing his foster father Luca Arbore in anger etc). But it's not all bad, as when spring comes she takes on her kindest face as Mărțișor and is willing to hand out luck and blessings if you wear the red and white string.

On March 1, Romanians celebrate spring by giving each other as gifts small charms attached to a red and white string, called mărțișor. These AI generated images are inspired by some of the designs from my childhood mărțișor collection.
Happy Spring!
