本回答はM10とM18について、以下における当方の私見に基づくものである：

M10 – 中隊長 – 6か月 – 訓練

M18とM10の両戦車駆逐車の相対的評価と改善点の提言。

序論

戦闘装備の効率は、該当装備を使用した地形、気象条件、および相対した敵に大きく依存するため、最終的な評価はひとつ以上の上記要因を組み合わせた条件下の経験に基づく、装備の問題点や潜在能力の推定値となる。天候、地形などのすべての組み合わせに対して、装備を試験することは不可能である。したがって状況によってはその発揮可能な能力は推定値となる。またある条件における能力を向上させることは、通常は別の条件での効率を低下させることになる。したがってM10とM18の両戦車駆逐車の優劣を評価する際は、それぞれの長所と短所を比較検討し、おのおのが望ましい性能を発揮できるような改善点を提案する必要がある。

装甲

M10の装甲防御はM18より優れている。20mm徹甲弾は推定400ヤードの距離でM18の（操縦手と副操縦手の前面を覆う）正面装甲を貫通可能である（また実際に貫通している）。これは至近距離ではあるが、20mm耐弾性能を持つ装甲の要望は大きい。徹甲弾はこの戦車駆逐車の正面と側面装甲を容易に貫通する。しかし重量の増加は登攀力、牽引力、操縦性の低下をまねき、この車両の扱いやすさを相殺するため、これ以上の重量増加は望ましくないとも考えられている。

火器

両車両の主兵装は満足できるものではあるが、いずれの機関銃も満足できるものではない。M18の対空機関銃用の銃架はM10のそれより優れたものではあるが、対空・対地両用火器としての機能は期待できない。銃手が露出しすぎているため、地上目標を掃射する用途には適さない。両車両とも、車体前方機銃、可能であれば同軸機銃を装備することが望ましい（いずれも30口径）。

砲塔

砲塔の区画とその機構には、M10とM18のいずれも多くの欠陥が存在する。M10は十分な床面積と乗員が主砲を操作する十分なスペースを持ち、「即応弾ラック」を含む優れた砲弾架を装備しているが、いくつかの場所で危険な砲塔の旋回機構が露出しており、至近距離の敵を確認するための銃眼やペリスコープが備えられておらず、そしてM10戦車駆逐車の最も重大な欠点は、動力旋回装置を備えていないことである。M10で動力旋回装置を装備した敵戦車と突然遭遇する危険に直面した乗員だけが、迅速な砲塔旋回機構の必要性を認識することができる。戦車駆逐車は動力旋回装置を装備していなければならない。

M18は動力旋回装置、方位角表示機（精密照準と長距離射撃に役立つ）、良好な視界を持ち、また全般に砲塔内の装備配置は良好である。欠点は少々窮屈な乗員区画、砲塔乗員用の銃眼や（照準器を備えた砲手用を除く）ペリスコープを欠くこと、そして最大の問題点は、数も少なく扱いにくい弾薬架と、十分な即応弾ラックを備えていないことである。

機動力と操縦性

M18の速度はM10よりはるかに高速ではあるが、これはあまり意味のあるものではない。もっとも重要なのは機動力と操縦性である。M18は扱いやすく、素早く動き、走行はスムーズであり、騒音が少なく、新品であれば相対的なパワーと登攀力に優れている。機動力と操縦性の双方の面で、M18はM10を上回っている；しかしM10には見られないひとつの問題点がM18の機動性を制限している。この車両はM10より若干車幅が広く、最低地上高が低い。これにより岩場での動きが制限され、軟弱な地盤でも行動できるM18の優れた機動力が相殺される。さらにM18はM10より急速に消耗し、最終的にはパワーも登攀力もM10にも劣るようになってしまう。M18は効率の低下を甘んじても、1段または2段低速のギアで取り廻す必要がある。

サスペンションと履帯

M18のサスペンションはM10よりも良好である。大型の転輪は小さな起伏をよく吸収し、乗り心地もスムーズで、転輪の損傷による走行不能の可能性が少なく、より消耗に耐える。M18の（トーションバー方式の）衝撃吸収装置は、転輪の自由な動きを可能とし、M18をM10よりはるかに乱暴に、積極的に扱うことを可能とする。また地雷への耐性も高く、起伏の多い地形での高速走行を可能としたことで、乗員が負傷する可能性も抑えられている。

M10の履帯はM18より優れている。その幅広の履帯は「地面との摩擦力」を利用することに優れている。M18の鋼鉄製履帯は、幅の狭さ、履帯拡張やグロウザーのための装備を欠くこと、硬い地面や凍結した路面での貧弱な牽引力を除けば、すべての面で優れている。履帯の拡張や、適切なグロウザーを装備させるなどの対策が必要である。

優劣

現状の両車両を比較した場合、筆者はM10よりM18戦車駆逐車の優位を挙げるが、いずれの車両も改善が可能であり、適切な改善がなされればいずれも素晴らしい装備となるだろう。

結論としては、戦車駆逐車の高速化は非現実的であり、戦車駆逐車の効率は（M18を基に）速度を捨てて若干の装甲に代え、幅広の履帯を採用して牽引力と登攀力を増大させることで改善が可能である。

M18 of the 77th Infantry Division on Okinawa.  11 May 1945 Why there's an M18 in the Pacific Theater, I can't really tell you.  It does have a big gun on it, maybe that's it.  And it's pretty light. According to a friend of mine with more sources than me: just before this, the 77th’s CO located eight M18′s to re-equip the anti-tank company of the 306th Infantry Regiment.  “M18s saw use mainly in the Philippines and on Okinawa with the 637th, 670th, and 671st tank destroyer battalions but only the 637th saw combat most notably during the battle of manila”
