The Little Dumbbell Nebula, M76 // Bob Stevenson

Up close and personal, now you can see the knots and structure within the Little Dumbbell Nebula. In this view, it rather looks like an apple that someone has cut in half!

I think you can make out the central white dwarf that is all that remains of the original star. That white dwarf has a surface temperature of about 88,400 degrees! The entire nebula, star and gas, is about 2,500 light years away.

Our Sniper (Pt.2)

Prolog - After a couple of days you begin to realise that Ghost and  König have been acting a little bit off. So you decided to spend some time with  Königfor the day not knowing what is going on between them two.

              The next day, you walked around the base and went to the shipment warehouse to grab a silencer since yours was old and broken.  “Hey Snipe,” said Graves as he was doing a storage check. “Hey Graves, “ you said as you rolled your eyes and looked through the weapon crates “Need help finding something?“ he asked as you looked at him annoyed “Yeah, I’m uh just looking for a silencer for my M76 '' you said as you continued to look into more crates, “I think I did find some over here let me check '' said Graves as he went to the back and looked for it. 

You leaned on a crate and waited for Graves to come back “Hey darling“ said König as he walks over and hugs you “ How are you?” He asked as he tilted his head a little to the side “Im doing well." You said and looked at König as you smiled under the mask. Konig smiles and leans on the crate as he wrapped his hand around your waist. He looked calm as he looked around the storage department  “Why are you in here?“ he asked He then looks at you in confusion. You blush as you felt his hand play with the back making you shiver a little as your breath hitched. “I was kinda worried because I heard that you were in the medic.“ he said and smiles softly knowing that you were blushing under the mask “I know.“ you said as you looked up at him and played with the helmet strap like how you would fidget with the straps like how you would fidget with the backpack straps. 

       Graves comes back with a silencer he looked at you and König “You two better not fuck in here, bad enough I have to do night watch.” he groaned as you grabbed the silencer “We weren't, it's not my fault that our single.” you said as you began to leave the storage department.ou walked out of the warehouse as König went off to do his own thing, you went inside your bunker and closed the door as you lay in your bunk. You got on your phone and saw a couple of messages from König. You were confused as you and he just saw each other 3 minutes ago. You looked at the notification anyway “Konig: Hey, I  need some help with fixing an AK47 for a cadet.” you read the text and then replied “ You: You just want to see me again don’t you? “ you hit send and not even 6 seconds there was a reply as you read it.  “Konig:….yes “ the reply, making you smile as you sat in a chair and began to take the old silencer off and put in the new one. Price walked in into the room as he had to return something and looked at you putting the silencer on “Make sure it's on tightly I don't want you to be in the Hospital again this month.“ he said as you looked up at him and smiled  “Will do Price“ you said and nod as you twisted it tightly and looked through the scope then placed it back down. 

        Price grabbed the M76 and tightened the silencer more just to make sure then ruffled your hair and left the room. You grabbed your phone and saw that König was calling you, as always you answered it as you looked at your weapon to make sure that everything was in check, “Are you coming to help me or not? ” He said as you rolled your eyes playfully “I’m heading there right now you big baby.“ you said as you heard him chuckle as he ended the call.      You two just looked at each other as you broke the silence “Sorry about that…Ghost “ you said as you blushed a little and walked by him. You felt his eyes on you as he looked you up and down as you walked down the hall. Ghost came back from the gym he was sweating and his heart beating quickly as he was remembering how you looked yesterday when he fucked you as he continues to head to the showers. When you entered you saw König standing there chewing on his helmet straps. He looks over to you and puts the strap down “Hey darling..” he said as he sounding nervous. You looked at his posture to see that he was nervous. You smiled as it was kind of cute how he made up an excuse so that he could see you and hear you to calm his nerves. You grabbed his hand “Are you ok?“ you asked as he shrugged and rubbed his arm “Was it your anxiety darling ?” You asked as he nodded again. You touched  his cheek as he looked at you “Do you want to go back to the barracks and cuddle?” You asked as he nodded.“Sorry if I interrupted you if you were doing something .” He said as you two left the room and began to walk back to the barracks he was holding your wrist “It’s ok, you did nothing, wrong darling.” You said softly. You knew that it was because of his social anxiety and that he was stressed out, so you didn’t mind walking back to the barracks again as you understood that König just needed to see you again.     

 You both lay in bed as you rubbed his head as he calmed down and looked at you and smiled “Thank you, darling .” He said as you slowly stopped and yawned as he kissed your head “Your welcome darling.” You said as you grew very tired. König smiles “You can rest now .” He said as he kissed your head as you closed your eyes and fell asleep. Once you were in deep sleep, he got up and left the room for a snack as he forgot to eat. He went to the kitchen and opened the fridge and grabbed a Dr. Pepper as he closed the door and opened it as he took a sip and then sighed. “What do you want, ghost? “ he said as he looked over to see Ghost leaning on the counter drinking Whiskey in his black hoodie and sweatpants. “How is she ?” He asked as König rolled his eyes and answered “She is ok she is asleep though and I can tell you that she is a deep sleeper.” He said and chuckled as Ghost scoffed as Konig glared at him “ You know what's funny Ghost.. when she came back to the room yesterday she was blushing and… very weak as she had some marks on her.” He said and walked over to  Ghost and looked at him like he wanted to murder him on the spot. “ IF you touch her Ghost, I’ll make sure you are my target,” he said as he was now having a face-off with Ghost. “Is that a threat?” Said Ghost standing up and looking slightly up at him “No, it’s a fucking promise “ he said and left the area and went back to the barracks and lay in bed as he pulled you on top of him and rubbed your back “I’ll make sure that fucker won’t touch you… You're mine forever.”       

   König looked at you and smiled as he saw how adorable you looked without your mask. How your messy hair that was all over the place and the side of your face pressed against his chest and being able to hold you like a teddy bear. It made him feel happy and at peace. He looked over to see a picture of you and his side by side holding your weapons like an active poster, you both were near your cadet years in that photo. He smiled remembering the day that he first fell in love with you.     

  You were to defuse a bomb from a cargo hold as at the time you were in the special forces at the time. The timer on the bomb was going by so quickly you didn’t have enough time as it almost exploded,  as it would have killed you and your squad. He was able to pull you away in time as the bomb went off.  You both stumbled back on the ground making him land on his back and you on his chest. He was covering his head as rubble began to fall and some of the rocks were hitting his helmet. After that happened and the mission was a success you two began to be friends and got closer as days passed until one day he asked you out while you two were on a stakeout to find a drug dealer. The next thing he knew was that you two began to date in private and would make sure that you were on the same team.        

   He smiled to himself as he remembered those days as he would never regret meeting you and saving your life. He closed his eyes and rested his eyes as he knew he had to keep a sharp eye on Ghost from now on to make sure that he wasn’t ever going to take you away from him. Ghost came back to the room he glared at König and glared at him as he walked over to his bed and lay down. He heard a whimper as he looked over to see you sitting up and getting out of bed and trying your best to make it to the kitchen but you were leaning on the doorway. Ghost gets up and picks you up you flinch a little bit then relax as you can tell it was Ghost by how he walked. He got to the kitchen and sat you down you still had your eyes closed but you were still responding. Ghost hands you some gushers as you ate some and took the iron pills. Ghost hands you a cup of water and rubs your head as you drank water “Are you feeling better?” he asked as you sleepy nodded. He nods and lets you finish as he picks you up and walks you back to the barracks once he arrived he sets you in your bed and puts a blanket over you as he goes back to his bed and sleeps.

Hubble celebrates 34th anniversary with a look at the Little Dumbbell Nebula

In celebration of the 34th anniversary of the launch of NASA's legendary Hubble Space Telescope on April 24, astronomers took a snapshot of the Little Dumbbell Nebula (also known as Messier 76, M76, or NGC 650/651) located 3,400 light-years away in the northern circumpolar constellation Perseus. The photogenic nebula is a favorite target of amateur astronomers.

M76 is classified as a planetary nebula, an expanding shell of glowing gases that were ejected from a dying red giant star. The star eventually collapses to an ultra-dense and hot white dwarf. A planetary nebula is unrelated to planets, but have that name because astronomers in the 1700s using low-power telescopes thought this type of object resembled a planet.

M76 is composed of a ring, seen edge-on as the central bar structure, and two lobes on either opening of the ring. Before the star burned out, it ejected the ring of gas and dust. The ring was probably sculpted by the effects of the star that once had a binary companion star. This sloughed off material created a thick disk of dust and gas along the plane of the companion's orbit. The hypothetical companion star isn't seen in the Hubble image, and so it could have been later swallowed by the central star. The disk would be forensic evidence for that stellar cannibalism.

The primary star is collapsing to form a white dwarf. It is one of the hottest stellar remnants known at a scorching 250,000 degrees Fahrenheit, 24 times our Sun's surface temperature. 
The sizzling white dwarf can be seen as a pinpoint in the center of the nebula. A star visible in projection beneath it is not part of the nebula.



Pinched off by the disk, two lobes of hot gas are escaping from the top and bottom of the "belt," along the star's rotation axis that is perpendicular to the disk. They are being propelled by the hurricane-like outflow of material from the dying star, tearing across space at two million miles per hour. That's fast enough to travel from Earth to the Moon in a little over seven minutes! This torrential "stellar wind" is plowing into cooler, slower-moving gas that was ejected at an earlier stage in the star's life, when it was a red giant. Ferocious ultraviolet radiation from the super-hot star is causing the gases to glow. The red color is from nitrogen, and blue is from oxygen.


Given our solar system is 4.6 billion years old, the entire nebula is a flash in the pan by cosmological timekeeping. It will vanish in about 15,000 years. 




Hubble's Star Trekking

Since its launch in 1990 Hubble has made 1.6 million observations of over 53,000 astronomical objects. To date, the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland holds 184 terabytes of processed data that is science-ready for astronomers around the world to use for research and analysis. Since 1990, 44,000 science papers have been published from Hubble observations. The space telescope is the most scientifically productive space astrophysics mission in NASA history. The demand for using Hubble is so high it is currently oversubscribed by a factor of six-to-one.

Most of Hubble's discoveries were not anticipated before launch, such as supermassive black holes, the atmospheres of exoplanets, gravitational lensing by dark matter, the presence of dark energy, and the abundance of planet formation among stars.

Hubble will continue research in those domains and capitalize on its unique ultraviolet-light capability on such topics as solar system phenomena, supernovae outbursts, composition of exoplanet atmospheres, and dynamic emission from galaxies. And Hubble investigations continue to benefit from its long baseline of observations of solar system objects, stellar variable phenomena and other exotic astrophysics of the cosmos.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope was designed to be meant to be complementary to Hubble, and not a substitute. Future Hubble research also will take advantage of the opportunity for synergies with Webb, which observes the universe in infrared light. The combined wavelength coverage of the two space telescopes expands on groundbreaking research in such areas as protostellar disks, exoplanet composition, unusual supernovae, cores of galaxies and chemistry of the distant universe.

The Hubble Space Telescope has been operating for over three decades and continues to make ground-breaking discoveries that shape our fundamental understanding of the universe. Hubble is a project of international cooperation between NASA and ESA (European Space Agency). NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the telescope and mission operations. Lockheed Martin Space, based in Denver, Colorado, also supports mission operations at Goddard. The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, conducts Hubble science operations for NASA.
