@steeleidolon
A distinctly nasal chanteuse’s voice warbled from an absolutely ancient looking record player, the dusty needle hovering unevenly over a spinning disc of polished vinyl.
“Honghu shui ya lang ya ma langda lang ah~ honghu an bian shi ya ma shi jiaxiang ah~ qingzao chuan er qu ya qu sa wang wanshang huilai yu man cang a ah~ sichu yeya he ling ou qiushou man fan daogu xiang ren ren dou shuo tiantang mei...”
Smoke trailed snake-like through the cool air of the walk-in fridge, leaking in thin plumes from the sides of Jae’s lips like the lazy breath of an imperial dragon. He reached over the crumpled, frostbitten body laid out on the table to flick the ashes of his cigarette into a small cloisonné bowl, slowly fanning himself with a running blow dryer on it’s lowest setting.
The senior sous chef stood at the door, hocking a wad of phlegm into a nearby trashcan before clearing his throat. Truly bizarre was one way to describe the scene as the underling and the Turk sang the next bit in harmony:
“Zen bi wo Honghu yu mi xiang... Ah~”
Once the impromptu performance was over- Yoon nodded his head in their SOLDIER guest’s direction as Kunsel leaned against the sterile tile walls.
“They say Heaven is beautiful, but how can it compare to my Hong lake? Very old song, but very popular,” he explained, pressing the button on the hair dryer to ramp up the power and heat. It was fine for a time as the Commis ran the nozzle up and down the length of the clothed corpse, poking at the stiff as a board lapel of the dead man’s suit, or tossing a bloodied ice-encrusted wallet to his sous chef.
“This fuckin’ thing... I told them not to put the shipment in the freezer too long. We should open a school, we speak so many damn languages between the employees moving in from Wutai and elsewhere.”
The blow dryer sputtered pathetically, giving a few last dying puffs that tousled Jae’s bangs away from his eyes. He eventually just tossed the useless appliance back on the table and picked up a pair of wire cutters, carefully and cleanly severing the tips of the fingers from the body’s closest hand.
“So, you wanted me to help you with some... specialist training. That’s all fine and dandy, but I just want to make sure that there won’t be any complications later on. The last thing I want is a pack of goons tearing the beaded curtains off the doorways and shaking down my family. They’re not exactly spring chickens, you know- They might give nai nai over there a heart attack.”
He gestures to a petite old woman in the corner, hand pulling noodles between her deceptively strong fingers and pushing down on some flour-coated poles that creaked beneath the weight of her geriatric muscles.
‘Nai nai’ could probably rip a guy’s balls straight off with her tough, peasant fingers- But that was besides the point. She shouldn’t HAVE to, was what Jae was trying to get at.

So let’s do the less important characters, starting with Masumi.
Masumi Koutsu’s name is  光津 真澄 , Koutsu, Masumi.
光, kou, means light, though here the intended meaning is likely luster.
津, tsu, means haven, port, harbor, or ferry.
真, ma, means truth, reality, but here the intented meaning is likely clear.
澄, sumi, means clean, pure, or rarely serene.
***
A bit clearing:
**亨通, koutsuu, can mean doing well, prosperous.
**Masumi doesn’t mean anything specific in Japanese, but it is notable being a unisex name, despite being predominantly used for women.
**tsu, and ma Kanji can be both read as “shin”, alluding to Shingo, the official 4th LDS member.
***tsu Kanji specifically alludes to watari, crossing, Kanji in Shingo’s name. It is similar to tsuki/getsu, alluding to En Moon, since Masumi is a Fusion user.
**Despite her name containing LIGHT Kanji, she largely uses EARTH monsters. The light Kanji might be a Yuzu allusion, though, since it is similar to zu Kanji’s alternate reading as ko.
********************************************************
Hokuto Shijima’s name is 志島 北斗, Shijima Hokuto.
志, shi, means purpose, will, determiniation, aspiration, ambition. Also other meanings of shi are here.
島, jima, more commonly spelled as shima, means island, or one’s domain/turf. Jima spelling more commonly used for island, though.
北斗, hokuto, just means big dipper, as a borrowed term from Chinese. 北, hoku, means north, and 斗, to, means Big Dipper in Chinese, and by itself means dipper in Chinese. This is more commonly translated as north star, though that is an incorrect, but nice sounding translation. Polaris is part of Big Dipper, but is not the star system collectively, obviously.
*****
**しじま, shijima, is an alternate spelling of 静寂, or 黙, and means silence/silent, quiet, or calm.
**The ma part in Shijima is similar to Yuma, whereas to in Hokuto is similar to Yuto.
***As we discussed in Yuto’s post, this is one of the likely origins of “to” in his name.
**Big Dipper doesn’t have much significance for Hokuto, though it is important in ZEXAL mythos, being the name origin of Barians.
**Much like Masumi, Hokuto is a unisex name.
***************************************************************************************************
Yaiba Todo’s name is 刀堂 刃, Toudou, Yaiba.
刀, tou, means blade, knife, or sword, but specifically refers to a single-edged blade, or knife, such as a katana.
堂, dou, means temple, shrine, or hall.
刃, yaiba, also means sword, or blade, but can colloquially mean strong person.
The Kanji for yaiba, and tou are very similar.
****
**The sword temple meaning here likely refers to Isonokami Shrine, a famous Shinto shrine.
***Despite this, since X-Sabers are travelling mercanaries, Yaiba’s aesthethic is more evocative of a ronin (similar to Roxas in Kingdom Hearts, or Auron in FFX, or samurai class in general for FF), who were generally Buddhist followers, though not really committed to a specific sect. This contrasts with Gongenzaka, who is a samurai with a clear master of sorts (Yuya, though like Benkei, and Yoshitsune, they are really equivalent).
**Swords in the context of Synchros generally allude to Buddhism, or Chivalrous Knights. Yaiba’s Deck, X-Sabers, in contrast, use swords commonly used by European mercaneries, such as claymores.
**Todo surname alludes to Todo Heisuke (Heisuke Todo in English spelling), a semi-famous early modern ronin involved in Shinsengumi.

MDSS AD EP 3 LETS GET IT
the art for this EPISODE MAKES ME WANT TO EXPLODE omg LOOK AT THEM look at LWJ oh my FUCK i love gearous... so much...
i know i said it already but i love this jin ling. he doesn't sound as bratty or stuffy or nasally, ayumu murase's voice is too clear, but the haughtiness is definitely still prevalent and the clarity of his voice is actually really nice for jin ling??
aw wait:
gi musen, riding towards the temple on ringo-chan: hey, you brats!
ran keigi (ljy): who are you calling brats?! don't you know what sect we're from? just because you took off that funeral make up, don't think you can start acting like a senpai!
gi musen: right, right, right. then, "onii-san-tachi." fire your rescue signal...
wwx calling the juniors "onii-san-tachi" (as if he's addressing people senior to him) is actually adorable. 🥺
omg wwx is playing his shoddy makeshift bamboo flute and it's as terrible as you'd hope lmao
GUYS HE'S PLAYING WANGXIAN ITS HAPPENING
omg i think that was lwj. you could hear him like gasping for air as he ran towards wwx. OMG HE JUST SAID "KIMI GA?" ("is it you?") he's so reactive you can hear the hope in his voice oh my heart
wait this lwj is actually so good.
gi musen: my type? hm, i guess it would be someone like gankou-kun (hanguang-jun).
ran bouki: "itta na." ("you said it.")
the vibes are kinda like 'you actually said it.' or 'you said it, not me.' or even "you asked for it". you guys need to listen to this pjgjdhd i'm going insane. literally it only takes two words from lwj for me to go insane.

Merch Day - PASH Illustration File 2021 - 2022
Here’s a quick flip through of the PASH Illustration File 2021-2022. It features WangXian art from GEAROUS on the front cover, and the back cover has 5 panel art of 3zun and WangXian.
There’s a lot of other contents but the flip through focuses only on the pages with MDZS art, and bonus sneak peek at TGCF art featuring Hualian which was part of the past issues of PASH ‘21-‘22
It also came with A1 poster of WangXian (the folds, I know the folds 🥲) and a very very pretty roll-up silk tapestry.

Just watched the first three episode of the japanese of mo dao zu shu (the anime not the audio drama) and I love it!!
First, the opening and ending changed completely BUT! The ed is beautiful and it’s sang by Aimer! Her voice is so great. The opening is not liked by most of the people I came across, but the lyrics are actually super sad and gave the impression that Lan Zhan is singing to Wei Ying. It still give off a very different vibe, like a shonen anime, but after all, Mo Dao Zu Shi is also about cool battle and characters so why not.
The voice are greaaaaat. Yeah I’m biased because I love japanese va. But hear me out. Kimura Ryohei as WWX is just fantastic. He can souds super cute and badass at the same time so he is perfect! As for Lan Zhan, didn’t expect Tachibana Shinnosuke, but I think a clearer and princely voice like him is also great ;). Midorikawa-san and Morikawa-san kept their role for JC and LQR. I also didn’t expect Souma as Jing Yi but it’s great in fact. Anyway, they are great at expressing their emotion so I’m not worried about this.
Welp, just watch the japanese dub with a whole new perspective because yeah I know nothing can surpass the original (in every media the orginal is superior most of the time anyway). But if you don’t want then that’s okay ;). And don’t shit on their pronouciation of the name please, they are not chinese and it’s great enough that they kept the original name (contrary to the audio drama).
Anyway, I’m about to cry again but with the japanese dub this time.
