Only one week until the Autumn Equinox, also known as Mabon, when night and day are at equal length. It is a time of great balance, a time to centre and ground ourselves to the earth.
Mabon is a Pagan festival called a Sabbat, it is the final harvest of the year, because after this day vegetation will begin to wither and die. Farmers will harvest their crops and fields will become dry and barren. The leaves on trees are starting to change colour ready to fall, while fruit and nuts start to drop from the branches. Even though it will begin to feel colder and get darker, all around us we are surrounded by the warm colours of fire such as reds, yellows, oranges and browns.
Mabon is also a time of making family feasts and stews and of sharing food with friends, family and neighbours, add lots of root vegetables with a choice of meat (leave out the meat if you're vegetarian) to a slow cooked stew and bread. Drink cider and apple juice, also apple, rhubarb, pumpkin, berry or meat pies are customary with a pentacle carved or added onto the pastry before cooking.
We celebrate Mabon by setting up an alter to honour the season. On the alter put anything you can find that will represent Autumn, such as fallen leaves or branches, acorns, pine cones and nuts. Add fruit and vegetables like pumpkins, squash, carrots, turnip, grapes, berries etc, Add apples by cutting them horizontally to reveal the Pentagram in their centre. You can also add corn bundles, wheat bundles or corn or wheat dollies. Light candles with Autumn colours of red, orange, white, purple and brown or gold. The alter will bring luck and protection, it will honour the season and the God and Goddess who bestow the gifts upon the earth. When lighting the candles ask the Goddess for her blessings and the God for protection for the colder, darker months to come.
This coming Mabon is a time to give thanks for the abundance of food and the harvest, to thank the God and Goddess for their gifts and their sacrifices. It is a time to appreciate what we have in life and give thanks for all our blessings no matter how small they may be.

Petition to change the name of Mabon to Mheillea
Why???
Mabon was named arbitrarily
Aiden Kelly says it wasn’t arbitrarily but his reasoning seems arbitrary to everyone else, it’s basically just that he found an obscure Welsh god named Mabon ap Modron who had been kidnapped as a child similar to how Persephone had been
the name Mabon (nor its namesake deity) has nothing to do with fall
the name was picked in the 1970s there’s no real historical ties to the equinox (which has been celebrated for millennia)
Mheillea is literally Manx for Harvest and it pops up in Manx harvest celebrations around the equinox (like the holiday Yn Mheillea)
Manx history doesn’t get enough love or recognition in neopagan circles (especially compared to the Irish names that half of the sabbats are named from)
It’s a very pretty name that shouldn’t be left to die out (MELL-ee-uh)
Unlike Mabon, Mheillea is a historically-relevant name already tied to autumn and the equinox
Will this catch on????
Probably not, i have no reach
Will that stop me???
no :)
anyways i might even start tagging things as Mheillea instead of Mabon on here even though that might be confusing to other people who are new here. We’ll see if i stick to it or give into peer pressure.

herbs for the fall equinox: 🍂
Tumblr media
mabon is one of the eight wiccan sabbats that are observed annually, aligning with the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere !! this holiday celebrates the second harvest of the year, and many people use this time to thank the earth for its bountifulness
here are a few herbs you can use to celebrate mabon this year:
apples: associated with fertility, longevity, and abundance, apples are strongly tied to mabon !! try baking with them or place a few apple seeds on your altar
cedar: put a few drops of cedarwood oil into a diffuser or use cedar bark when burning spell petitions
calendula: planet this beautiful annual flower in your garden or brew the petals into a nice tea
blue sage: this herb is popularly burned for its protective properties, but you could also leave a sprig or two on your windowsill
corn: make a meal for yourself and others that includes this on the plate !! you could also feed the kernels to squirrels, deer, etc.
grapes: this is another fruit connected to wealth and fertility. hang the stems in a sachet nearby your bed to promote pregnancy, better dreams, and more income
book a reading !!

Mabon
Usually celebrated between September 20th and the 23rd, this year it falls on the 23rd. The name Mabon comes from the Welsh God, who was the son of the Earth Mother Goddess, however, there is evidence that the name was adopted in the 1970s, and the holiday was not originally a Celtic celebration. In ancient times it was celebrated by the Greeks, through the tale of Persephone and Demeter, the Celts honored Cernnunos, he goes into the underworld at this time and emerges in the spring as the Green Man, now we gather for Mabon, a witches thanksgiving to celebrate the harvest and abundance. During Mabon it is a good time to work with Demeter, not only is she the Goddess of the harvest she is also the Goddess of sacred law, and the cycle of life and death. If making a Mabon altar, add a orange candle, have a cornucopia as the center of it, incorporate vines, give thanks and share your abundance with others.

Mabon is one of my favorite sabbats. My apartment is so cozy and decorated for Samhain and fall. I went to the farmers market and a local bookstore in the morning, and was recommended a book in foraging by a wonderful stranger (a huge desire of mine is to be a well rounded plant expert!) I made a chicken pot pie in my crockpot and a delicious toffee apple pie for dinner. I feel ready for this time of reclusion, to do some inner work and push myself to work for what will make me happiest and most fulfilled.

Today is Autumn Equinox also known as a Pagan holiday called Mabon when night and day are at equal length, it is mainly a harvest festival, it is the last harvest before winter comes. In old times it would be a time to start stocking up on fruit, wheat, corn and grain for the winter months ahead.
This is a time of transformation, The great wheel has turned as we pass into a new season and say goodbye to Summer. The earth is going through a major shift, where darkness will now start to take over light as the nights slowly start to get longer and days get shorter. Cold will slowly start to take over warmth and death will start to take over life as plants will wilt and trees will start to lose their leaves, fields will become baron and grey. wild animals will start to hibernate and gather food for the winter months.
Mabon is a time of thanksgiving, we thank the God and Goddess for all that we have and thank them for the harvest we see before us. The sap of trees returns back to their roots deep in the earth, changing the greens of summer to the fires of autumn, to the flaming reds, oranges and golds. We are returning to the dark from whence we came. The Goddess is radiant as Harvest Queen and the God finally dies with his gift of pure love with the cutting of the last grain, he will descend into the underworld, his last day on earth will be Samhain when a gate will open between our world and the underworld making the veil between our two world become thin.
We enjoy the abundance of fruit and vegetables at this time. It is customary to make stews made with root vegetables and to bake home made bread and pies, we would have a big family meal and invite friends and neighbours to join us, drinking cider and apple juice.
On Mabon we adorn our altars with pumpkins, nuts, corn, wheat, squash, fruits and any other seasonal fair and any falling leaves, pine cones or acorns we may find to honour the season and to thank the God and Goddess for the wealth of harvest bestowed upon us. Light candles with Autumn colours of red, orange, purple, white, brown or gold. Also candles of black and white, black to represent the God and white to represent the Goddess. The alter will bring luck and protection. When lighting the candles ask the Goddess for her blessings and the God for protection for the colder, darker months to come.
Mabon is a transition for the Triple Goddess as she goes from her mother phase to her crone phase, her final phase from her journey of the year.
The Autumn Equinox is a time of balance, of both light and dark, it is a time to look within ourselves and balance our thoughts and emotions and to find balance in our lives. To embrace our dark and our light equally as one cannot exist without the other. it is when we stop and relax and enjoy the fruits of our personal harvests, whether they be from toiling in our gardens, working at our jobs, raising our families, or just coping with the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Mabon reminds us of the cycle of life, death and rebirth. As we go into the dark half of the year, we also know that Spring and Summer will be upon us again and life will flourish once more.
Hoof and Horn, Hoof and Horn
All that dies shall be reborn
Corn and Grain, Corn and Grain
All that falls shall rise again
May your Mabon be memorable and your hearts and spirits be filled to overflowing
