Mac OS 9, released in 1999, was the last version of the classic Mac operating system before Apple's shift to Mac OS X in 2001

Each of these wallpapers had their own names rather than categories as seen today. Here are the names in order from left to right:

Beano Cardz: Dennis the Menace (Windows/Classic Mac, 2001)

Card-shaped mini-CD merch of the long-running British comic book The Beano, and of its most famous character, who coincidentally shares his name with an American character who debuted in the same month as him. You can download it here, and run it in your browser by dragging the .iso file onto the emulated Mac desktop here.

The featured contest's prize was tickets to the Chesstington World of Adventures theme park, which at the time had a Beanoland area themed around the comic. The Beanoland theming's closure in 2009 was commemorated with a massive pie fight.

Closing out the year with a small cover note about “our biggest issue ever” (at 144 numbered pages), MacAddict’s Mac OS 9 coverage included a news item about legal troubles with Microware, who’d been selling “OS-9″ since the days of the Radio Shack and Tandy Color Computers. There was also coverage of the new iMacs, which engineered out the cooling fan (although the fanless iMac I bought a few years later developed a considerable whine from its hard drive), added “graphite” grey at the high end to echo the Power Mac G4, and included a slot-loading CD-ROM drive. (There’s an anecdote in Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs with Jobs flying into a rage on realizing the original iMac used a portable-type CD-ROM drive that exposed its lens along with a snap-on disc hub.)

i wish i could use it as my main os but the old browsers don’t have https support so i can’t really use any modern websites :(
