hello!! i saw the tags on your pinned post abt how shoujo wasn't just romance and it got me curious bc i've read some nice shoujo but really dislike romance-heavy plots. are there any shoujos you like that don't have much or any romance in them? ty and i hope you have a good day! 💛
Oh, there are lots of mangas that are classified as shoujo and don't have romance!!
I am just now beginning my journey through shoujo as well, so I don't have a lot of recommendations for stuff I actually read, but the ones I did read or watch so far are:
Natsume Yuujinchou and basically anything else by its author, Yuki Midorikawa. Sometimes, her works do include romance, but the focus is almost always in the interpersonal relationships and the difficulties her characters go through in life. NatsuYuu is about an orphan boy who can see yokai, and for that reason he acts in "weird" ways and his foster families dislike him, so he keeps going from family to family. The story is about how he finds a good family who accepts and loves him, makes friends, and learns to make friends even with yokais.
There are currently 6 anime seasons out, and a 7th season is on its way, so you can either read the manga or watch the anime.
Tumblr media
Akatsuki no Yona - i mean, this one does include romance, but i'll still put it on the list because as far as the anime went the focus is heavy on Yona's actual journey to gather the dragons of legend to be able to recover the kingdom that was stolen from her. It shows how Yona goes from a sheltered spoiled girl to a person befitting the title of dragon king.
Tumblr media
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom - this one is the og villainess isekai and it truly deserves the hype. It is about a girl who wakes up in the child body of the villainess of her favorite otome game. She remembers that the villainess' fate in the game was always either death or exile, so she tries her hardest to change her fate. This one is classified as a reverse harem, but the main character is pretty oblivious and worries more about farming and eating sweets and generally being the best girl ever than actually worrying about romance. Aro ace queen tbh. And her harem is just happy to be with her and be dragged along for her stupid adventures. Plus, the female members of her harem are taken seriously as well, Mary is a raging lesbian and it is not subtext. I mean, it is a shoujo, so of course the female characters would be important lol.
Tumblr media
Usagi Drop - listen to me. You will absolutely not look for anything related to this manga. If you like the premise you can watch the anime. But, please, do not look for the manga. You will only be extremely disappointed by it. That being said, I recommend the anime. It is about a man who returns home for his grandfather's funeral and then finds out his grandfather had an illegitimate daughter who has now become an orphan. He ends up having to take care of her because the rest of the family considers her a shame to the family.
Tumblr media
Now, for the stuff I havent seen yet, I'll just write some that are on my "plan to read" list and put their genres next to their names so you can check it out if you think the genre's sound interesting:
7 Seeds (drama, horror, psychological, sci fi, survival)
Requiem of the Rose King (drama, historical, supernatural, gender identity)
Basara (drama, fantasy, adventure) (i think this one has romance, but from what i've heard, the main character's story is a lot deeper as she takes her brother's identity in order to fight against the king who killed her brother, it is pretty famous and considered a classic)
Ghost Hunt (horror, mystery, psychological, supernatural)
Helter Skelter (horror, psychological)
My Stepmother and Stepsisters aren't Wicked (comedy, historical, slice of life)
Ikoku Nikki (drama) (this one is the one i'm currently most interested on, i hear it's about a distant woman who's never had a good relationship with her sister and now has to take care of her teenage niece because her sister died)
Itsuwari no Freya (crossdressing, historical)
Limit (drama, psychological, school) (this one sounds incredible tbh, on a field trip their bus gets into an accident and only 5 girls remain, having to learn to survive and trying to assert themselves over one another because they hate each other.)
Machida-kun no sekai (school)
Mitarai-ke, Enjou suru (drama) (the main character wants to infiltrate the household of the family who blamed her mother for a fire, in order to prove her mother's innocence)
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You (comedy)
Uramichi Oniisan (comedy, showbiz, workplace)
Usotoki Rhetoric (mystery, historical)
Don't Call It Mystery (mystery)
If anyone has more things to recommend I would also love to hear about it!!

Alright, taking a breather from my Eclipse posts to handle a couple things! (Long post!)
1) New ep of Kabe Koji: LOVELY. Ooooooh, the sloooooooowww burn. Mamocchi’s emotion at touching Issei and inspiring him. Issei’s slow growth into leadership and determination. These characters are taking their time with showing their facets. I’m really loving it.
2) Japanese Twitter (and English Twitter reporting on doramas) have noted that the show Silent is quite popular right now in Japan, so I’m picking it up on Viki. Watched the first episode last night, and it is just lovely, reflective of a lot of what I like about doramas and Japanese literature. The pace is very much akin to Shinya Shokudo -- it takes its time with telling its story. It focuses on a young woman who is about to move in with her boyfriend, a high school friend. But she runs into another high school classmate -- her ex-boyfriend, who had suddenly dumped her after graduation. While she thought she had been dumped for another woman, her ex-boyfriend had actually lost his hearing. I’m only through episode one, and there are three on Viki so far, but I’m going to dive into this -- I feel like the pace and storyline are super calming, and the acting is wonderful so far. The lead actress is Kawaguchi Haruna, who I haven’t watched before, but she’s splendid.
I’m so appreciating the increase in dramas that feature characters with disabilities in lead or prominent roles -- Drive My Car, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and now (for me) Silent. I’m only through episode one, but it seems like this art is being respectfully and deeply done. It’s a nice foil to the intensity of The Eclipse, and I think I’m picking up Big Dragon once The Eclipse is over, so considering how insane Big Dragon looks, I’ll need a calmer dorama to balance things out!
3) OMG, I am FINALLY publishing this review: Three Star Bar in Nishi Ogikubo, yay!
I finished this cute mid-season 2021 dorama much later than I expected; I started it last month, and had to pause while my partner had COVID. But this six-episode series was otherwise a quick watch. I’m going to offer some gentle criticism, but this show did help me cross another dorama off my Machida Keita rabbithole list.
The show focused on three former high school classmates, now adults, who take over the bar of the deceased grandfather of one of the classmates. The bar focuses on classic cocktails and only serves canned food (somewhat of a common occurrence in shows about food in Japan). Machida as Amamiya is a former salaryman; Fujiwara Kisetsu as Nakauchi is a former high-end chef who transforms the canned foods into unique dishes, and Morisaki Win as Kobayashi is a struggling author and current owner of the bar.
So I think that this dorama would have actually been slightly better if it had been a fall or early winter dorama, which sounds kinda of weird, but hear me out: the three main actors are all amazing in their own right -- we’ve seen them in other works that totally showcased their acting chops.
[Having now watched a couple Machida works, and with more on my list, I’m really getting convinced that Cherry Magic was his prime acting showcase of his career so far. Watching Teppachi! was fine, shrugs, and Super Rich is going along (Akaso Eiji outacts Machida in Super Rich), but those shows aren’t challenging, or like, dramatic. Live Like a Girl, Alice in Borderland, that taiga he was in, and probably some movies I’m missing, may prove me wrong, but I gotta watch them first before I judge. I think we were deeply spoiled by the actual quality of the filming and writing of CM, regardless of its BL status, for both Machida and Akaso.]
Anyway, I think that if Three Star Bar were a fall or early winter show, it may have been written with a little more depth -- instead, I think it served as a mid-season quick filler for MBS. I think the three guys (sparkles sparkles, they were all cast together for a reason) were ultimately underutilized, and the customer focal points of each episode were slightly weak and hyperbolized. There was a lot of potential -- the dorama was sweet, but the writing was on the edge of something much more complicated and interesting that didn’t quite get there.
I wrote earlier that episode two punched me in the gut -- it was an episode about an actress-turned-mother who was struggling with balancing her career and raising her child. Lord, can I relate.
So I think that episode could have really gone places! Japan has deeply entrenched issues with supporting career women who become mothers. I think the episode documented the actress’s struggles well. But the guys were left to respond kind of with....not a lot. The actress’s husband comes to the bar and says, “we’ll manage.” Like, cool, but give us more. What I wanted to see was how the husband would compromise himself and his family’s structure to accommodate his wife’s career -- it wouldn’t have taken too much more writing to get to that point. Or the guys talking about their own views of this problem more deeply.
I think I’m being critical enough of this show because the potential for human revelations in the context of being alone in a quiet bar are so high. I’m working out in my head a separate meditation on the beauty of eating and drinking alone, and how Japan handles this so beautifully in their many shows about the topic. I really wanted Three Star Bar to join those ranks, but ultimately, the dorama was designed to tell a different story.
For the sake of that different story -- getting three cute classmates together to figure out their early mid-life crises as a team -- it was a sweet show, especially the last episode, with an ex-pat coming back home to Japan to discover her father’s life in the old bar with Kobayashi’s grandfather. I truly do love shows that showcase food and cocktails, and honestly, I think Machida as a bartender did the best he could with what he was given from a writing perspective.
And Amamiya’s and Kobayashi’s life revelations at the end were satisfying. Amamiya’s character was written as a little milquetoast, but -- the guy clearly need to move away from society’s demands that he turn into a run-of-the-mill salaryman. By finding his life in the bar and living creatively, Amamiya took a risk that a man like himself would have otherwise likely struggled to accept. The true winner of this show, in my opinion, was Morisaki Win as Kobayashi. His Kobayashi was the perfect brooding foil to Amamiya’s cheerfulness, and I think Kobayashi’s revelatory story of conquering writer’s block did nail what a quiet bar inspires -- aloneness can oftentimes bring light to darkness.
I would recommend this as a quick watch! If you LOVE shows about people sitting at bars and working out their very deep issues, Shinya Shokudo is the dorama for that; but Three Star Bar is perfect for a fast binge. AND, SWEETLY: two cute future BL cameos are in this, with Nishigaki Sho as a young Amamiya, and Matsuoka Koudai from beloved Kabe Koji as a fellow chef. Nishigaki playing a young Amamiya was particularly cute and made me giggle; I wonder what Minato Akira/Rokkaku would have thought.

machida-kun’s world - ando yuki
a plain young man becomes a beloved pillar of his community due to his strong values and autistic swag
the couple: there is a couple and they’re excellent. machida, while extremely kind to others, is incapable of recognizing love, and him realizing this is a big part of his development.
story & setting: machida, having a large family, is used to lending a hand and extending grace. his altruism and practical, responsible advice gradually earns the trust and respect of the people around him, allowing him to value himself the same way 🥹
the art: very light and sparse, with dreamy tones, big beautiful eyes, and gorgeous watercolour covers

The World of Machida-kun - Manga Review
The World of Machida-kun – Manga Review
I was really looking forward to reading The World of Machida-kun. I can’t quite explain why. You know when you first see someone at school or at work. And you think to yourself, I bet I would really get along with that person. We should be friends. And you don’t really have a reason to think that. You’ve never spoken to them before. They look like a pretty normal average person. But you have…

"The red of setting sun", Akira x Shoutarou SS
“I feel like time has stopped. Like I’ll always be here with you, never ageing.”
“......”
“So I don’t mind if this sunset continues forever.”
“I wouldn’t mind it either. It’d be nice if the time has really stopped.”
Tumblr media
Railway crossings with the lowered gates, the backs of tired people, the persimmon trees in someone’s garden were all passing by the train window, basking in the orange light.
I was looking at it standing by the door. Autumn was slowly taking its toll; it made me feel strangely relieved, and I let out a quiet sigh.

Akira-kun was standing right next to the Soshigaya station ticket gate.
His hair was even more ruffled than usual, and he was wearing round glasses, which didn’t suit him at all.
According to his words, all influential mangakas had glasses, so he felt more motivated when wearing them.
This all meant that he had a deadline coming.
Of course, these glasses were fake and didn’t have lenses in them.
He pulled his hands out of the haramaki and opened them towards me.
“Welcome back, Shou-chan~!”
…But why did he sound like he was on the verge of tears?
When I slowly approached him, he hugged me tightly and started patting my head and shoulders.
“What’s gotten into you?”
“I came to pick you up!”
“Aren’t you busy drawing your manga?”
“I was so worried about you, I couldn’t do anything else…”
“You’re too anxious. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Nothing to be scared about.”
“That’s good to hear.”
But even when Akira-kun finished checking if I was okay, he still looked upset.
If I smile at him, he'll smile back.
With a forced and bitter smile, as radiant as the setting sun.
“Let’s go home together.”
We walked at a distance too small for friends, too big for lovers, but just enough for a family.

Actually, the world has been coloured by the sunset for two days already.
For some reason, the night hadn’t come after the evening yesterday, and, of course, without the night, the morning didn’t come either.
The hands of the clocks struck 12 or 7, but the landscape remained just as it was at sunset.

When I say ‘world’, I mean just the small place where I live. But for everyone else, it only happened in the Setagaya district.
“Can we stop by the greengrocer shop?”
“Sure. What d’you wanna buy?”
“I thought that yesterday’s curry would taste better with eggplants.”
“Shou-chan, you’re a genius.”
I didn’t understand why the sun wasn’t setting or why we were led to think so.
Strange events like this happened quite often and usually resolved by themselves without any explanation.
And that’s why people on the streets seemed to continue living by the clock with the usual expressions on their faces.
It was half past seven.
Hearing the trumpet of the ramen shop made me feel strange.
As if I were dozing off, and everything surrounding me has been a dream.
“I heard that nights when the sun doesn’t set are called white nights. Seems like they happen often near the South Pole.”
We bought a big autumn eggplant and were heading home when I started telling Akira-kun what I learnt today.
“They said so on the radio in the cafeteria where I went for lunch.”
“Nah, no way we’re gettin’ those in Tokyo.”
He hunched over more than usual, his chin dropped, and walked a bit uncomfortably.
He was the only one in the town who seemed to be nervous.
“It’s too creepy that the sun’s not goin’ down…”
“If you leave Setagaya and go to Shinjuku or Machida, the sky will go back to normal. And when you return to Setagaya, it’ll be sunset again.”
“It makes no sense, really~...”
“What if we’re seeing a rare natural occurrence now?”
“No way it’s natural…”
Not holding any worries like Akira-kun, I blinked slowly, looking at the strange sunset.
He became even more anxious, seeing how low my sense of danger was.
“Well, at least it’s not that troublesome that the night doesn’t come. You can just wrap yourself in the futon when sleeping, and the sun won’t bother you. And it feels good to wake up when it’s bright outside.”
“You’re too quick to adapt…”
“Do you really hate it that much?”
“‘Course I do… Night’s good because it’s night; mornin’s good because it’s mornin’.”
“And what’s good about the night?”
“At this season, the bell crickets are creaking. And the moon looks pretty. Yesterday, we couldn’t see it at all because of this sunset.”
“...”
“Sunset’s also good, but I don’t wanna miss other beautiful things ‘cause of it.”
“You sound just like a writer today.”
“Mangakas are writers too, y’know?! Our sensitivity is what sells our works!”
After that, Akira-kun scowled at the sunset.
But I still couldn’t see it as anything but dazzling and beautiful.
“Akira-kun, do you ever feel suffocated when looking at the setting sun? Sometimes I get scared by it. …But not today.”
“?”
“I finally understood why my chest hurts so much at sunset. The sinking sun and the day ending turn into loneliness, sorrow, and sentimentality, and it makes me feel miserable.”
But now I’m calm.
The never-ending sunset made me feel safe.
“I feel like time has stopped. Like I’ll always be here with you, never ageing.”
“......”
“So I don’t mind if this sunset continues forever.”
“I wouldn’t mind it either. It’d be nice if the time has really stopped.”
“......”
“But it’s not like that, right? I still have my deadline tomorrow, and the trains still run on time.”
…He’s right.
I flipped the calendar, and the curry I ate in the morning tasted better than yesterday, having sat overnight.
“It’s boring to see the same scenery every day. I hope everything comes back to normal soon, so I can see different landscapes with you~”
“Akira-kun……”
“Even when the night comes and the morning comes after that, we’ll always be together. And, ‘course, even when we become old geezers.”
Akira-kun held my right hand.
His hand was hot after being warmed in the haramaki.
And his smile was soft—not bitter at all.
I thought that his vermilion-coloured cheeks were way more beautiful than the sunset.
Suddenly, the feeling of anxiety overcame me, and I dropped my head.
“...Usually things like this end quickly. Why does this one go on for two days already?”
“Well, maybe the guy who usually deals with all this got into some trouble?”
“That would be bad…”
“Or maybe they’re daydreaming like you just now.
“......”
“But they better come to their senses soon and do something about it!”
He raised his eyebrows and showed me a thin and comical smile, fitting for someone playing a supporting role.
I couldn’t help but smile in return.
“How’s your audition today?”
“Horrible.”
“Thought so. So I bought you a ‘get-better-pudding’.”
“I’m glad. Genuinely.”
“And if it went well, it would be a ‘celebration pudding’.”
“How convenient.”
“I also got a 'request pudding’... Can you help me put on solid colours when we get home…?”
“I’d do that even without the pudding.”
When we got closer to our house, the sun suddenly went down.
First Venus twinkled in the sky, then the bell crickets started creaking.
Curry was even better than in the morning; just as I thought, the sweetness of the roasted eggplant made the taste stand out.
Nothing happened—nothing at all. Just another day went down as usual.

Megumi Ogata - Hohoemi no Bakudan (Smile Bomb)
Our dear Megumi Ogata (Kurama VA) was a guest at the Oishi x Nakamura's Memories Anime Song Club last month, and sang the opening theme of Yu Yu Hakusho. I love her voice!!
🎸Guitar and back vocals by: Masayoshi Oishi and Shugo Nakamura
A-R-I-G-A-T-O-U G-O-Z-A-I ... MASU!!
She also sang "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" (Neon Genesis Evangelion). I hope they upload on YouTube too.
Megumi also talked about the upcoming Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho live action this Wednesday (November 15, 2023), on the "Megumi Ogata's Roar Yell ROCK!". The broadcast is available on the audio service "AuDee", operated by TOKYO FM.
She watched the live action teaser PV and thought it was really good. She was surprised in many ways, like by Yusuke's spirit gun (reigan) and the best VFX team in the world doing the visual effects. She was really impressed by that scene from the trailer when Kurama throws the rose and it goes flying through the air. She thinks the main cast is really good.
She also complimented the additional cast, fangirling over Kenichi Takito's Elder Toguro. She was really excited to see him on Younger Toguro's (Go Ayano) shoulders, and is really looking forward to seeing Takito-san's laugh (if you guys watched the trailer, that creepy laugh of Elder Toguro was scary XD). Megumi-san can't imagine other person playing the older brother!
She also recognized that Keiko-chan is actually Sei Shiraishi-chan, who has worked with her quite recently. She also mentioned Keita Machida-kun's Koenma. She thinks it must be incredibly difficult to talk with that pacifier in his mouth and definitely wants to see it in live action version.
In short, she's looking forward to the live action ^^

Today's translation #375
Figure skating Life vol. 6, Let's talk more with Kenji!, Guest: Mitsurou Kubo
Part 3.
Ke: Is that so? [Mitsurou and Sayo didn't know each other before Yuri!!!]
Ku: She knew about me, and I've heard that she was watching the show thinking "Kubo-san is here too", but we didn't talk at that occasion. But it was the first chapter of the story of us making an anime together.
Ke: I was sure you knew each other before that.
Ku: No, not at all. When she was making preparation for the project, she heard me talking on radio and on TV about figure skating, so she decided that she wanted to make an anime together with me. The first time [that we met] was when a mutual acquaintance introduced us to each other. She told me then that she was sitting quite close to me at that ice show, and I was like: "At that ice show?".
Ke: The first time when you and I met was during "Medalists on ICE" after Japanese Nationals, right?
Ku: Yes, Medalists in 2014.
Ke: That extremely giant Machida-kun's banner.
Ku: Yeah. In summer of that year, we had decided to work on the anime together, and at that time we were going to see competitions and gathering materials for the story, from regional competition in Tokyo to the Final in Barcelona. We went to see Nationals, when we still hadn't decided what kind of story we were going to create in details, and it had only been like half a year, since we started doing our research, so we were like: "What do you mean by Machida is going to retire?". Like, the skater that I wanted to watch more in the future is retiring... So that night when the announcement was made, in snowy Nagano, together with the Director, we were full of this "you must be kidding me!" feeling, and the Director wrote something like "Machida, you idiot!" in the snow.
<laugh together>

"Cherry Magic" the movie 🎬Interview with director Kazama from the bluray booklet.
--Although it has been a while since the movie was released, what are your memories of this when you look back at the time from shooting to promotion?
✧ Kazama: I attended stage greetings held in Yamagata and Korea. Akaso kun and Machida san also participated in the worldwide online live broadcast. At that time, I was also in the studio and watched the world of the two of them from a distance. This time, the filming, editing, and publicity of the movie were all carried out in a short period of time. I feel that the distance between the two actors is very close. Compared with the TV series, there is a different kind of process from shooting to publicity. The real feeling of working hard together.
--The fit between the actors themselves and the characters in this play is also very important. As a director, what kind of consciousness do you bring to guide the two actors to show their charm?
✧Kazama: Personally, when I come into contact with actors, I will definitely pay attention to the relationship between the personalities and roles of the actors themselves in the drama creation. Therefore, in the on-site communication, the gentleness, humility and prudence in dealing with others, the open mindedness & straightforward and natural charm of Akaso-kun will be added to the character. In Machida's words, his sincerity in acting, the attitude of study every day, and the beauty in the inadvertent melancholy are reflected in the characters. These are what I thought about from the very beginning.
--In performances, you can often hear that you first try to express yourself, and then you control it in some places or your emotions are fuller. What about the two of them?
✧Kazama: The two entered the set with a well-thought-out plan based on a deep understanding of the characters. I first look at myself from the perspective of the audience, and then I work with them to think about the form of representation. Especially in the world of Cherry Magic, there is a lot of need for detailed acting skills, and the three of us have been discussing topics such as "from which angle should we reflect, to get closer to the current inner conflict between Adachi and Kurosawa". Therefore, I don't think there is much drama.
--Do you have any impressions about the relationship between Akaso san and Machida san on the scene this time, as well as their respective performances?
✧Kazama: Machida will think deeply about his choice of rhetoric, even if it is just one word, and will explore how to express it to convey it to the other party. Is someone who takes responsibility for their own words and expressions. Machida like this is because in the repeated communication with Akaso, I feel that he has realized the feeling that even if it is not correct, standard language can convey all the emotions to the other party. In the movie too, Kurosawa changed in the dialogue with Adachi, and like in the movie, I think Machida also changed in the constant communication with each other.
On the contrary, Akaso has really never changed in a good sense from the first meeting to the completion of this work. Machida also said in the interview that he is a "very refreshing" person. Who makes people feel very comfortable He is a person who is very active in communication and does not make people worry. Maybe he's trying to keep others from bothering, but he won't show it,Although he may have worked hard for our consideration, he will not let us see his intentions.
In the process of nurturing a work and creating a work, actors and staff sometimes think too much. I think Machida has also had such a scene, At that time, it was Akaso-kun who transformed the atmosphere of the scene into a relaxed atmosphere. When Machida san was with Akaso-kun, he had just the right sense of de-energization and seemed to be spending a very relaxing time. I feel that the atmosphere has increased a lot compared to when we were shooting the TV drama. I think Its really good that they have such a relationship like that, and I don't think the relationship between the two of them will change in the future.
--After this, the two of them can often be seen on TV, but I think the opportunity to create this popularity is the work of "Cherry Magic"
✧ Kazama: I think that many people have already grasped their charm before appearing in "Cherry Magic", and I am very happy that "Cherry Magic" can appear in their trajectory.
Akaso, Machida (after the drama) also had a lot of experience, and I came back to this work in the form of a movie again. Even when they are not together, they can cherish this work. I am very happy. .
