Betty's Summer Surprise Fruit Dessert
by Madeline Ashby
My word for sick was “busy,” or “tired,” or “behind.”  I had fingers in every pie. Some of them were cool and creamy and sweet, and others were molten hot, blistering. I had a go-bag at the door.  When I came home I wouldn’t get out of bed for days. Sometimes the sickness came with a cough. Sometimes it came with the pervasive sense that every possible choice of what to do next was the wrong one. Sometimes I would finally drag myself to my desk and stare at one of two novels that had languished, unfinished for years. When you are always catching up, you can never truly arrive. My illness enjoyed hiding behind my successes. It hid inside my carry-on and my hardshell. It hid under my gel manicure. It was a deceptively-worded clause in yet another contract I had failed to sign and scan until long after the work was done. Occasionally others glimpsed it peeking out from behind my glasses, which is, I imagine, why, in the greenroom at SXSW 2018, Bruce Sterling suddenly turned to me with the dread weight of his perceptiveness and asked, “But are you okay? Really?” Reader, I was not.

Today I finished the first season of OB: The next chapter in Realm.fm, and I felt the need to express a bit of the tornado of ideas I've got myself trapped in. I'm no cultural journalist to go and try to make a heavily-well argumented-dense critic, but in my humble opinion as a consumer of the original series and an audiovisual professional, this is a shit-ton of work that pays off greatly.
My first and most relevant thought during the whole season was that these writers (beautiful people Malka Older, Madeline Ashby, Mishell Baker, Heli Kennedy, E.C. Myers and Lindsay Smit) were so loving and responsible about the truth of these characters that matching the care Maslany puts in everything she touches transported me in a heartbeat into a world I had been missing for a bit now. The humor was there, the wit and the danger, the political statments that soak and base every characters' decisions. They show such an smart sense of timing when introducing new characters as well as letting the old ones make their big entrances, and this keeps you there, wanting for more, being promised almost nothing because they didn't owe us shit, but still found a way to give us new nuances of personality among the clones, new ways of aproaching the same old problems and furthering the discussions that were left open in the TV show.
I am almost in love with the swift in protagonism and activation among the old characters. The fact that Cosima stands first in the first chapters and the detail and effort put in the portrait of her happiness with Delphine strikes me hard personally as I adored these characters and I'm profoundly grateful for the intention of justice that this steady life represents for a couple that was heavily beaten up during the show (not by the writers and directors but by the fictional forces). I love every entrance of every Clone Club sestra - eternally charismatic and multi-layered Allison, twisted and stubborn and wounded Rachel - but when I thought that Helena wouldn't be up for this adventure, her coming down of the truck in her wild hair and parka (and the boots that once belonged to Allison) made me shiver with a sort of simple, joyful happiness that I understand as a gift from the team of this podcast and I am grateful again.
There are several other ideas that I find just right, some new and some old ones that still amaze me: the growth and codependency of small Clone Club Charlotte and Kira, the concept of modern/choosen family, the resistance to structural violence of a minority based on a trust net and their natural skills, the redemption that this concept offers to heavily traumatised undercasted ones as Helena, Rachel, potentially Vivi, and how this interacts with the universal, odysseic concept of coming home; the smart use of Donnie, Art, Felix and Delphine as support as always, offering familiarity but also space for the developpment of those who carry on with the story this time (even though it unsettled me a bit the fact that Delphine didn't suspect a thing about anything when she was so close to the real deal, but that's me respecting and expecting too much about this character anyway) or the effort in documentation needed to talk this much about academic environment, big corporations, northern-american politics and inmigration policies that surely could be addressed more realisticly with even more time than 11 one hour and a half episodes, but still serves to infuse life to this ever-expanding world that could go on for ever. Well not for ever, but I'd like to think that.
Chez Cophine. We were in the right hands all the time, I knew it.
So, I've needed time to come around and sit to listen this properly, but now I think is one of the finest products I've consumed in some time. Only a new, natural step forward for a franchise that have always proved itself to be supported by senseful creators and technicians with a formidable work ethic, tremendous ambitions and love. Now I am equally terrified and excited to listen to Season 2 because I know that some of the old cast actors will voice their characters, but I am not ready for this to be finished. Still, here I go, expecting as much quality as these creators have proven themselves to be capable of providing.
Just one, I'm a few, no family too, who am I?

“Barbenheimer”—the collective celebration around the release of the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies—has collided with the wedding industrial complex. That’s not a joke. According to a Variety story this week, people are planning on taking their friends and family, prenuptials, to see the two films as a double feature. People who aren’t getting married are planning similar movie-watching marathons. It’s the kind of viral cultural moment marketing teams dream of. It also feels like a sign of the end times.
This sense of dread doesn’t stem from the public’s collective yearning to absorb stories about a Mattel doll and the development of atomic weapons at the same time. It’s because this weekend promises the kind of “let’s all go to the movies!” hype (and box office haul) that cinemas haven’t seen since before the Covid-19 pandemic shut theaters down—and it’s happening as Hollywood is going on strike.
This week, WIRED rolled out a series of stories detailing what we believe the future of entertainment might entail. The purpose was to look at how all aspects of culture, from books to video games to YouTube, could be impacted by advancements in technology. As we worked on it, though, something happened: Contract talks between Hollywood studios and the writers and actors unions began to break down. One of the major sticking points in those negotiations was the use of artificial intelligence in movie- and TV-making. Suddenly, as Madeline Ashby wrote in her essay this week, the world was in the midst of Hot Strike Summer.
Then, Hot Strike Summer slammed into the Barbenheimer moment. Once the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA, called for a walkout, stars could no longer smile on red carpets without looking like scabs. The stars of Oppenheimer walked out of the film’s London premiere when the strike began. The cast and filmmakers behind Barbie, which premiered before SAG called for a strike, voiced their support. Soon, “This Barbie Is Now on Strike” became the headline, transforming one of the world’s most well-known figurines into Norma Rae. The marquee at my local theater in Brooklyn listed both movies alongside the phrase “Atomic Kenergy,” while The New York Times asked, “Can I Watch ‘Barbenheimer’ Despite the Hollywood Strikes?” (Short answer: Yes.)
To that end, the strikes will not affect Oppenheimer or Barbie’s opening weekend box office numbers. Earlier this week, AMC Entertainment reported that some 40,000 people had bought tickets for both films, and together they’re estimated to make around $150-200 million domestically, with Greta Gerwig’s send-up of the Mattel doll bringing in a bigger chunk than Christopher Nolan’s historical drama about the man behind the atomic bomb.
But what matters is what happens after this weekend. By all accounts, Hot Strike Summer seems poised to last beyond one season. Even before SAG went on strike, studio sources were telling reporters that the plan was to let the strike “drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses.” In response to that, actor Ron Perlman took to social media to say “listen to me, motherfucker—there’s a lot of ways to lose your house.” He later walked that back, but when Hellboy enters the chat, you know it’s not going to end gently.
The longer writers and actors are on strike, the bigger the hole next summer or the summer after that, when the movies that would be filming right now aren’t ready. (Deadpool 3 and the sequel to Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, for example, are both currently on hold.) Cinemas have been bouncing back in the years since Covid restrictions were lifted and people began feeling comfortable in movie houses again. A lackluster year brought on by a dearth of films could prove detrimental.
Yesterday, Comic-Con International began in San Diego. Typically, or at least before the pandemic, the event has been full of panels with flashy stars promoting their next big movie or TV series. As long as SAG is on strike, those celebs won’t show. Some attendees will likely welcome the event’s return to its comics roots, rather than the Hollywood hype-fest it has become. But no matter what happens, it will be unlike any Comic-Con in recent memory. Maybe a little less plastic, but not fantastic.

For the End of the Year Book Ask! #3, #10, #16 <333 Let your correct onions be KNOWN Beautiful <3333
I LOVE TALKING ABOUT MY BOOK ONIONS
3. what were your top 5 books of the year?
FUCK this one took a lot of thinking
i had to go to my shelf of favorite reads of the year and it was. very tough to choose.
firstly is yellowface by r.f. kuang, which i talk about more in the next question (i answered these out of order oopsies)
second i think is the fifth season/the obelisk gate by n.k. jemisin. i read the fifth season both last year and this year for two different classes, and then finally got around to the sequel + am currently reading the third book and i am bonkers about them. i am thinking about essun and nassun and alabaster and hoa constantly. deeply unwell. a lot more geology than i had initially expected but i'm having a GREAT time
the long way to a small angry planet by becky chambers. my fucking beloved. i've literally owned the book since like 2021 but took forever to read it but i love it sooo much i love the entire wayfarer crew but i think about kizzy and ashby constantly. the socks match my hat scene was so small but lives in my head rent-free
circe by madeline miller!!!! this one is popular for a reason. i know a lot of people tend to prefer TSOA/their first introduction to miller's writing is TSOA but circe was mine bc i love the odyssey (and also the emily wilson odyssey came out before wiliad. so. i have not had the brain power to get thru the fagles translation of either one yet). anyway i loved this a lot. i connected a lot with circe as a person and a character and her entire web of relationships...i am so emo about it. also i am a circe/penelope truther and when i write a sci fi or fantasy novel very loosely inspired by their dynamic. then what. ....wait i might have just had a breakthru on one of my wips wait a minute—
and finally the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson. i think about eleanor too often. way too often. someone in the goodreads reviews commented on her loneliness and it clicked for me why i like her so much and i have not recovered <3
10. what was your favorite new release of the year?
out of the ones i read this year? yellowface by r.f. kuang. i don't read thrillers much but this one was so much. i loved it. chaotic satirical thriller criticizing the publishing industry and raising questions about ownvoices and representation, which authors and stories the industry rewards and prioritizes, the pitfalls of being a young prodigy, and also it was just bonkers. i know this one was divisive for some people but i loved it. i had a great time. i have not stopped thinking about "they called it a globule" for months.
16. what is the most overhyped book you read this year?
you know DAMN WELL what you were doing when you chose this question. kissing you on the mouth
anyway is this a safe space. is this a safe space for me to be bitch. f**rth wing. it was f**rth wing. spoilering so tumblr doesn't put it in the search for the stans to find me
it is bad. it is bad. i initially gave it i think 1.5 stars (rounded up to 2 on GR) but i hate it more every single time i think about it. there is just so much wrong with it as a book but is also emblematic of a lot of larger issues in publishing, and particularly with red tower as an imprint, but i do not have all day to rant or we will be here forever
end of year book ask!

So here: the anthologies of short stories published by by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The list of contributors are some prominent writers you may have known like Hannah Lilith Assadi, Yoon Ha Lee and Madeline Ashby. Add the foreword from Roxanne Gay. The idea for this anthology is to shine a light on various issues occurring and worsening, and show potential solutions. The main point is to create a utopian world where people can live safely. Interesting ha! Well, just like any other anthologies, this anthology has some good and okay stories. Yet they will mention and offer you stories about domestic violence, child abuse, animal abuse, physical violence and murder, islamophobia, xenophobia, racism, classism, poverty, self-harm, alcoholism, substance abuse, homophobia and possibly other issues that I have forgotten. If you’d prefer to avoid sensitive matter related to the topics I just listed, Take Us to a Better Place Stories may not be for you. So did the stories in the collection lean a little heavily on their theme? Of course they did. Were they still well written and enjoyable? Yes!
