DANVILLE – Danville Area Community College has released a list of its honor students for the Spring 2023 Semester. A student must carry 12 or more credit hours and a straight A (4.0) average on a 4.0 scale to be included on the President’s List. Bongzilla w/ Wizard Rifle & Possum Pot: Live at Grantski Records

Bongzilla is a sludge/stoner metal band from Madison, Wisconsin that originally started performing as a band during 1995-2009. After a six-year hiatus, Bongzilla reunited with most of the original lineup in 2015. The band currently consists of Mike “Muleboy” Makela (vocals/guitars/bass), Jeff “Spanky” Schultz (guitars), and Dirty Mike “Magma” Henry (drums). It is worth noting one former Bongzilla alum (2005-2009) was Dave “Dixie” Collins (Weedeater) who played bass. They have released five (5) LPs, seven (7) EPs and Splits, and four (4) Compilation albums with their last release entitled, Weedconsin, courtesy of Heavy Psych Sounds in 2021. You can also pre-order their newest LP, Dab City, by following this link to Heavy Psych Sounds (release date June 2nd, 2023).

Bongzilla embarked on a Spring tour in support of the release of Dab City on March 10th at Planet Mammoth Fest in Scottsdale, Arizona. Luckily for me, they added my hometown on their way to play Boggs Social in Atlanta, Georgia. What makes this show even cooler for me is that it took place at my favorite local record store, Grantski Records, in downtown Augusta, Georgia. This would be my first time seeing Bongzilla and it was something special seeing them at Grantski Records in such an intimate setting. Earplugs were made for just these moments in life because Bongzilla brought that heavy, sludgy sound that rattled the room from start to finish.

Wizard Rifle is a two (2) piece progressive metal band that started a band in 2010 and hails from Portland, Oregon. The band consists of Sam Ford (vocals/drums) and Max Dameron (vocals/guitars). Wizard Rifle is a two-piece band that packs a heavy punch that leaves you wanting more. I have not had many chances to see Wizard Rifle perform live, so I cherish those moments when they arrive. I enjoyed seeing so many people at Grantski Records get into their set. Possum Rot is a stoner metal band from Augusta, Georgia that formed back in 2017. Possum Rot consists of Matt Poppell (vocals/guitar), Tyler Milford (vocals/bass), and Evan Grantski (drums). They have released four (4) singles to date: “Do It Again”, “Pestilence”, “Smoke”, and “Prisoner of The Dirt”. I am ashamed to say that I have not seen Possum Rot perform before this evening. And sadly, I am from Augusta, their hometown. {face palm} Not all my choices are the right choice sometimes, missing Possum Rot numerous times was not the right choice. Believe me. The best way to describe Possum Rot is what if Sleep and The Melvins had a little Sabbath, sludge metal baby? Then you have the greatness that is Possum Rot. BACKSTORY: Landon Hales grew up in Nightfall, Colorado, with his two, distant parents. With Landon being a unplanned pregnancy, this took a toll on the relationship between him, and his parents. They were still young, and pursuing their careers. Growing up, Landon was always second in their lives, and never prioritized. Landon was only noticed when he achieved something high, and never when he needed unconditional love. Anytime he failed, he was often criticized irrationally. Sports, had to participate, grades, had to be perfect, social circle, had to be people as perfect as him. This created a narcissistic child, who would put hisself first, and do whatever it took to get what he wanted. Around 14, Landon started to cope with stress by doing hard drugs, and smoking weed and cigarettes. None were a routine, besides smoking cigarettes. It kept him calm, and his parents never bothered to say anything about it. To pass time, he would often find himself exercising and drawing. Exercising honed his already athletic body, while drawing sharpened his mind. Landon was even fascinated with archery, and boxing, and he mastered both by 15.

Unzicker–Cook House, 2975 Oxford-Middletown Road at Hamilton-Richmond Road (Ohio 177), is a registered historic building in Milford Township, Butler County, near Oxford, Ohio, listed in the National Register. Daniel Unzicker (1798-1863) came from Bavaria, Germany, with his wife, Magdalena Kahn (1803-1880). They were married in 1821 in Germany and shortly afterwards emigrated first to Canada and then to Pennsylvania. About 1828 they moved to Butler County,OH, and settled at Overpeck. Later they moved to 80 acres in Milford Township which they had bought for $300.

When the Unzickers moved to the land, which was a tract of school land in Section 9 of the township, there was a clearing with an old log cabin and stable. Unzicker continued to improve the land with the construction of several stone buildings. He farmed the land and increased his holdings to 160 acres. Daniel Unzicker and his wife were Mennonites. At the time they moved there as an influx of Mennonites into Butler County from Canada and Pennsylvania. Many settled in St. Clair and Madison townships. He was also a preacher and both were active and faithful members of their church. They had 13 children. All of the children married and became farmers except Elizabeth who was a school teacher. Of the other children, Peter was a stone mason and probably helped with the construction of the house and farm buildings. Daniel became a shoemaker and David operated a still on the property about 1839. Daniel Unzicker was also an active Democrat and was highly respected in the community although he never held public office.

The whole complex is the result of rational site planning. Although the buildings are simple in construction and plan, they provide necessary shelter and take advantage of local building materials and the sloping site. The house is built close to the hillside and opens to the south and east, so it is protected from the harsh winter weather which comes from the north and west. The springhouse used the spring to keep its interior cool and moist. The smokehouse is largely exposed for good ventilation. It shows planning based on necessity and practicality. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1974.

Basically, Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller from Richmond, Virginia. He is a British American soldier. Miller served with the rebels in the Revolutionary War. According to lore, he was attracted to the area by its good spring water and friendly Native Americans. With the original county seat of Madison County being Milford, Kentucky, Miller successfully lobbied the Kentucky legislature to move it from Milford to present-day Richmond.
