Maes was fogging up the glass. Every breath he took condensated on the display case, and when the sweat from his palms had decided they’d had enough, his hands slowly slid down with the second worst sound Roy had ever heard in his life.
The worst sound was when Maes told him he was going to propose to Miss Gracia Hart.

Chapter Fifteen: Love Like You Pt. 4
“Damn it, Dolly, remind me to get an elevator installed here.” Envy narrowed their violent violet eyes at the last stretch of stairs.
“No arguing with you there about the elevator. Now, let’s get down to business and hope to god it was just a dog.” Dolly carefully started going down the stairs to get the ordeal over with.
“There better be a chimera alchemist down in that basement, if not, I’m going to have a field day brewing more horrible diseases to amuse myself with.” Envy growled under their breath as they followed Dolly down the stairs with Hughes’s following shortly after.
“How exactly do you even make disease?” Hughes suddenly felt a pit in his stomach as Envy flashed a sharp tooth grin. “My, am I so flattered you asked! You know how viruses basically merge with cells? I simply manipulate the viruses I inject into my own body and using my shapeshifting skills, I can design fancy new diseases. It’s a fairly simple little process with amazing results in human suffering.” Envy bragged looking more like the horrid gremlin of designer diseases they are.
“Envy, don’t you ever make yourself super ill after doing that?” Dolly watched Envy for a bit, concerned that Envy’s purposefully making themself ill to make others suffer. “Not always, the only time I did was the aforementioned rabies incident. I’ve learned not to repeat that one again.” Envy puffed their chest out a bit, trying to make themself look a bit bigger than they were.
“Sounds like you want to try it again.” Hughes gave an unimpressed look at Envy who frowned deeply at being called out. “No I don’t, I’m fine and look how awesome I am now.” Envy hissed, clearly they didn’t learn a thing from the past incident.
“Wait…you had rabies?” Said a rather concerningly unhinged voice in the void of the basement.
The group of three went silent as they looked in unison towards the source of the messed up voice. Down below was the dread chimera Alchemist, Shou Tucker, massive dog-like body with an upside down man’s upper torso for a head. It was clear Tucker hadn’t been given any proper body care in a long time, mange had taken a rather devastating course on his body. The rotting smell from the lesions weaved in the air like baking garbage in the summer sun, Dolly having to cover her nose from the offensive odor. Tucker was in no less of a better term a complete disaster and even Envy started to feel a bit sorry for the bastard. That momentary sense of pity turned into homicidal rage as Tucker started hobbling towards them. Instinctively, Hughes’s hands were making their way to the hidden throwing knives and began to throw some warning knives to dissuade the horrible chimera father. It only stopped Tucker for a second or two before he just started laughing his mangled head off at the absurdity of the situation he was in. Hughes froze for a moment as Tucker the not so fluffy chimera kept laughing away.
“Oh what joy, what fun, Hughes is a homunculus now! Tell me, how does it feel to be a fucking monster like me now?” Tucker finally spoke as his tired eyes focused on Hughes who looked even more pissed than before.
“Now that’s just rude to call us monsters, after all we’ve done for you too like making you into something you like!” Envy opened their big mouth which earned them a rock being thrown towards them.
“Damn it, where did he find the rocks?!” Dolly ducked as the rock sailed past and missed Envy who was now pissed.
“You’d be surprised with what I can find down here lady and more! Like this old ax I’ve found in the basement closet.” Tucker revealed the ax, gripped tightly in his mange riddled monster paws. “Are you kidding me right now!? The previous Landlord hid his murder weapons down here!?” Envy dropped their library nerd disguise before leaping into the air to pounce onto the Chimera.
“And now it’s a fight, Dolly, you can handle a fight, right?” Hughes asked as he got the knives ready, not wanting to hit Envy with his heat vision. “Yeah I can, but damn it, this better not attract any attention from the residences up above.” Dolly went to use her teleportation ability to scout out a weapon to use in combate.
Envy had landed squarely on Tucker’s shoulders, balancing themself like a cat as they went into combat mode. Tucker swung the ax about precariously, taking out a beam in the process as Envy continued their dance of violence as they spun away from Tucker’s swings. Dolly silently watched in awe of Envy’s fighting style as she ever saw something like it before, pausing for a moment in her rummaging for a weapon. Hughes was rather annoyed that Envy was inadvertently acting like a meat shield for Tucker as he struggled to get a good aim in. To Hughes, Envy was a battle hog that didn’t really understand what teamwork was as they spun around to kick the ax out of Tucker’s hand. The ax sailed in the air for a few seconds before embedding itself into the boiler, unleashing a heated jet of steam right on through. Envy took some steam damage as they hissed violently, Tucker taking advantage of the steam filling the room to hide himself. There were some incomprehensible sounds coming from Hughes as he got into the steam filled battle grounds with a ticking time bomb known as a damaged boiler. Dolly quickened her hunt for a weapon as the steam filled the room, only to find a child who was barely past the age of four.
“Oh this situation just keeps getting better, doesn’t it? Guys, I found a kid!” Dolly called out as she kept the kid close to her for safety. “Are you kidding me right now!? Yeah no he has to die right now!” Hughes began to see the rather lovely shade of red as his eyes slowly became a whitish tint of blue.
“TUCKER YOU FUCKER COME OUT HERE AND FIGHT ME!” Envy roared, ignoring the fact there was a kid in the basement during this incident.
“YOU GET AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER NINA!” Tuckered screamed as he revealed himself in the mist, close to where Hughes was. “...I thought she was dead?” Dolly muttered as she checked the child over for any injuries. “DID YOU FUCKING CLONE A REPLACEMENT OF YOUR LITTLE PRINCESS!?” Hughes went in to stab into Tucker and hang onto him. “I CAN REMAKE MY DAUGHTER AND MAKE HER EVEN BETTER THAN THE OLD ONE!” Tucker acclaimed as he attempted to take a swipe at Hughes with his diseased paws. ‘Somehow you managed to out terrible Hohenheim…’ Dolly thought to herself as she teleported herself with the child to the stairway.
“AND THAT’S WHY YOU’RE AN ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE PARENT!” Hughes began to climb up on Tucker’s massive body using the knives like a climbing tool.
Tucker let out horrific screeches as Hughes climbed on the back of the disgusting bio alchemist Chimera as his eyes focused on Dolly leading the clone of Nina out of the basement. Like a freight train, Tucker started charging for the stairs with intent of killing the person taking his homemade replacement daughter away. This act alone caused Envy to tense up in their frozen vacant stance of rage before they sprinted after Tucker. Not even a second passed before anyone could register what happened. Tucker had stopped in mid stride as a gaping hole was made with his heart sticking out clutched in angry, bloodied hands. Envy had found their motivation to kill once again as they retracted their hand from the vile chest and casually crushed the heart in their bare hands. It splattered the floor like a stepped on jelly donut as Hughes removed himself from the slowly dying chimera as he slumped against the floor. Jagged breaths came out of Tucker in short bursts of pain as his body started registering what had happened. Dolly sat still as she held the child rather close to her after witnessing what a pissed off Envy could do. “...I’m..in..pain…” Tucker gasped as he struggled to stay alive as Hughes stood above him with glowing eyes. “Hi in pain, I’m done.” Hughes menacingly said as the heat vision was unleashed onto his body, incinerating it saved for the promised skull being saved for Envy’s DIY purposes.
Hughes lifted the severed head as he got ready to hand it over to Envy who wasn’t focused on the head just yet. Instead, Envy without really thinking, made their way over to Dolly who had let go of the child to check on Envy. The steam burns were healing rapidly as part of being a homunculus, but Envy was very much gore covered from the heart ripping. Before Dolly could say anything to Envy, they simply pulled Dolly in close and held on tightly to her. Hughes watched in shock at what he was witnessing, the horrible little gremlin of a homunculus was actually hugging a person for once. Dolly, likewise, was caught off guard by the sudden hug, but slowly she returned the hug. Envy was shaking a bit, likely from the adrenaline rush coursing through their body as Dolly got covered in Tucker’s gore. This was the first for Dolly to witness Envy be frightened over something like it as she did the best to console Envy that she was alright and unharmed. As much as Hughes didn’t want to interrupt this emotional growth that Envy was experiencing, there was a far more pressing matter on hand.

Kimblee: I think all of my assassination attempts have finally stopped.
1912: Almost 20 times and almost 20 times we failed!!
Kimblee: Yes, I think I'm good for now. Those were all comedic assassination attempts anyway. That organisation was run by the circus. To this day I can't take them seriously. No, no,
1913: nothing
Kimblee: See, I'm out of the woods!
1914: nothing so far *Scar attacks*
Kimblee: Looking good! I was almost tired of living this way and this fight really reminded me why I like life!
Late 1914: *cracking knuckles*
Kimblee, actually, on god, really almost dying, bleeding: It can't get worse than this, can it???
1915: howdy :))))

I’m glad Maes Hughes died.
He’s a fan favorite character and I enjoy him a lot too, but I think fundamentally he’s a character who has to die. His role in the narrative is to haunt it.
I might be even more of a weirdo because I enjoy his manga characterization over his Brotherhood or ‘03 portrayal, but I love the idea of Hughes being someone the Elric brothers barely know - someone we, the audience, barely see.
Until he dies.
Because suddenly he’s everywhere. He was Roy’s friend and Armstrong’s superior officer and Winry’s acquaintance and Elicia’s father - and he was the soldier both Ed and Al knew, but didn’t actually know, that got killed because of them anyway.
In the manga Winry stays at Hughes’ place, but Ed and Al enter his house for the first time after they found out he died. For them, it’s not about losing a friend (though I am sure they liked him just fine) because that story is already Roy’s - for them it’s about realizing that this plot they’ve involved themselves in kills people that aren’t actually directly involved at all to begin with. It makes sense for their allies and friends and loved-ones to be targeted by the antagonists - but a soldier who mostly joined in because he was at the right (or wrong) place at the right (wrong) time? That’s not supposed to happen. And that’s what makes Hughes’ death so hard on them.
(and poor Elicia - abandoned children without their fathers were always a weakness of Ed’s)
But Roy? Yeah... he suffers. From the moment of Hughes’ dead on, Roy is haunted by it. By him. His best friend follows him everywhere. We see it in the way Roy only involves himself in the plot because Hughes figured something out and Roy is desperate for answers. He hunts down the homunculi to save this country, sure, but mostly so he can burn his best friend’s murderer to the ground. When Riza talks about winning against the Führer and their military dictatorship, she talks about all of them, not a hint of revenge coloring her vision - but Roy? It is telling that it isn’t a greater ideal that makes him torture Envy, but the agony of his best friend’s death.
The thing that almost breaks Roy is Maes.
No.
It’s Maes’ memory haunting the narrative.
And isn’t that beautiful?
The tragedy of it all, the horror, and the realization that Roy Mustang never really recovered from the War, that his friends are the only think keeping him in one piece, the fact that Roy Mustang is a Hero and a Monster and a fallible human capable of love.
Maes Hughes has to die to remind all of us of what Roy Mustang is capable of: love, loyalty, devotion.... and the slaughter and torture of numerous people.
His ghost is haunting the narrative - and for that I love him.

what's my roman empire?Maes Hughes never got to see his little girl grow up. The man who loved his daughter and wife so much. The man who cherished his family until his death. And Elicia Hughes probably won't remember her father. That little girl will see pictures of him and know that he's her father. But she won't remember what it's like to be carried on his shoulders or the feeling of his scratchy beard against her cheek. People will tell her that she was his pride and joy, but she won't truly know. Maes Hughes will never see his daughter graduate, will not intimidate her future partner (cause c'mon he would have loved to), will not walk her down the aisle and will never be an annoying grandfather doting on his daughters children.

God I wonder how the Elric's are gonna feel about Hughes being back and. Shit. Who's gonna tell his wife!? It's been two years! He has so many photos to catch up on...

roy “hughes retired to his farm up north” mustang did not, in fact, alert the elrics before the fake news story went public.

also i’m trying not to get emotional over the fact that while missing 2-3 years of most relationships is negligible in the grand scheme of things, 2-3 years away from raising a toddler is huge. Fortunately (?) for Maes, he got back before Elicia could really understand the concept of death, but he still probably missed a lot of milestones. :,(

Happy Halloween! Anything full metal alchemist?
Pretending to be a boy is the easy and obvious thing to do.
Mustang already thinks she is one - apparently the paperwork he'd found on her had only called her Ed and he'd decided that was short for Edward. It's not like there was anything feminine about her while she was lying in bed trying not to bleed to death.
The military might agree to take a twelve year old boy, but will never consider the same for a twelve year old girl. It's safer, too, for people not to know what she is.
"I don't like this, Sister," Al says as she transmutes a heavy coat to wear over her thick leather pants and chunky boots. She almost cuts her hair, but their father had long hair, and she's already lost two limbs. If her hair is what gives her away, then clearly she has bigger problems.
"Remember that it's Brother once we get on the train to central," she warns.
He can't make facial expressions anymore, but the mulishness to his silence is easy for her read. She's his big sister, after all. “It’s just until we get our bodies back, Al. It’s fine.”
“Won’t it bother you to be called a boy?” he asks. “It would bother me to be called a girl.”
Yes. “Not really. It’s just temporary, and you and Winry and Granny know. It’s fine.”
Eden isn’t looking forward to it, but her brother doesn’t have his body because of her. She has to fix this, and whatever it is she has to do in service of that is what she’ll do.
~
They get to Central and meet Mustang again and his office and Maes Hughes and his very nice wife and no one even bats an eyelash at calling her a boy, or when Al calls her Brother, or at referring to her as Edward. She can at least tell them she goes by Ed, which is true.
The physical that disqualified Al might be an issue except she’s twelve and they don’t ask her to take her boxers off. Standing there shirtless feels weird, even though her chest is completely flat, but they’re more interested in her automail than in questioning her gender.
She’s dubbed the Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, and the victory is bittersweet for more than one reason.
~
Sometimes, in the beginning, when they’re far from central she’ll take down her hair and transmute a dress and just go out and be a girl for a little bit. Soon, that becomes too risky, because she’s so well known, because Al makes her identity obvious.
Al stops calling her Sister except when they’re in a room alone and she tells herself it doesn’t bother her.
When she’s fourteen, the jokes about her voice not having dropped yet start at around the same time as she starts having to bind her chest to keep it looking flat. The baggy jacket worked for a while, but now she needs an extra step. She’s fifteen when she really starts to hate it, when her chest is large enough that flattening them constricts her movements and makes it so she can’t expand her lungs fully. It’s too much of liability. She wears a sports bra and gets a baggy tank top and saves the binding for when she has to report into Mustang.
Nearly three years of no one guessing anything and then they’re in Liore when Rose takes one look at her and says, “I thought the Fullmetal Alchemist was a boy?”
“I am a boy,” she says, but it comes out awkwardly, because she’s never had to say that before, never had to try and convince someone before. There’s a little spark of pleasure at Rose just looking at her and knowing, but it’s drowned out by the terror at the possibility of being found out.
Rose frowns, but then her face clears as an embarrassed flush rushes across her face. “Oh! I didn’t know that you were – uh, right. Sorry, I – yes, um, of course, you are definitely a boy. My apologies!”
Wait, that’s not what she – oh fuck, whatever. It amounts to the same thing, she supposes.
Then she’s too busy chasing after this fake priest and Rose is furious at her and Ed is pretty sure she’s going to get murdered by this whole town at one point, but it works out, more or less. The town is sort of a mess, but there’s no more fake priest offering false hope and false gods, so that has to be good, right?
Rose is tear stained and empty and she’d known that Ed was a girl. “Hey,” Ed says softly, “it’s going to be okay. You can rebuild.”
“Rebuild what?” she hiccups, trying to contain her sobs. “We’re in the middle of nowhere and no one cares about us and without those miracles, fake or not, people will be hungry!”
Fuck. This isn’t Ed’s problem. But she wants to help. She wants to help Rose, who’s nice, and pretty, and saw her. “What if there was a river around the city? Then you wouldn’t be in the middle of nowhere and you could grow something or catch fish, or whatever.”
“The river isn’t anywhere near here!” she shouts.
“It could be,” she says and now Rose is staring at her and Al is sighing.
She’s the Fullmetal Alchemist. What’s one river?
She and Al take the train to the nearest branch of the river, marking off what they’ll do on the map and debating circles and Al doesn’t say a word about this being a waste of time, but he wouldn’t. He’s usually the bleeding heart between them.
They buy two boats, split up to each take it to a bend in the river that almost no one uses, and get to work. It takes almost two weeks to push the new bit of the river near Liore and she meets Al in the middle, the two of them connecting the new river right outside of city gates.
They go back to Liore, to tell Rose and everyone else what they’ve done, and they find something they hadn’t expected.
That damn priest is back.
The ensuring fight nearly kills her and she was certain it actually would, but the strange creature literally slithers away from her rather than killing her. It at least proves to the people that that thing isn’t a prophet, although it does leave a large portion of the town destroyed.
They can rebuild closer to the river anyway.
Ed is broken and bruised and Rose is tending to her and she tries not to think how she’s going to write any of this up in a report.
“What’s the river called?” Rose asks as she checks on the stitches she’d made. She’s not as good as Winry, but she’s not bad either.
Ed bites her lip to distract herself from the pain of disinfectant on her wounds then says, “What? I don’t know. Whatever you want.”
“You made it,” she says stubbornly. “You should name it.”
“It doesn’t matter,” she insists, wincing as Rose rubs some sort of salve into her many bruises, sliding her hand beneath her sports bra to get the one that’s all along her side and her ribs. She’s probably broken at least one. Then, without thinking, “Eden. Call it the Eden River.”
Someone should at least get to use her name if she can’t.
Rose pauses, staring at her, and Ed looks down rather than meeting her gaze. “Ed,” she says gently, “please don’t take this the wrong way, and I promise I won’t ask again, but – are you a boy?”
She should say yes. Even though Rose had guessed right the first time, she should say yes, and protect the same secret she’s been protecting for the past four years.
But it’s been a really long couple of weeks.
“I’m what I have to be,” she says, shrugging even though it hurts.
Rose smiles at her, warm and pretty and ugh, why does she have to be so pretty? This is so unfair. “In this room, all you have to be is yourself, Eden.”
She can’t help but return Rose’s smile. She hasn’t been able to be herself in a long time.
~
Ed is sixteen and has just received a summons from Mustang, who apparently hadn’t been satisfied with her initial report of Liore and had finally tracked her down after months of dodging him to demand she return to Central, which is annoying as shit. She’s finally found some books that even sort of explain what that creature in Liore was, and now he wants her to come back? What a waste of time.
“Um, Sister,” Al says and Ed automatically looks around, but they’re completely alone in this corner of the library, “do you think, now that you’re enlistment age, that you might tell them truth?”
She stares. “Why would I do that?”
“Well, we haven’t been back in a long time, and you look a lot – especially this past year, you know?” She continues staring, because she does not know. “Most people see what they expect to see, but you might have to – I don’t know, do something, if you don’t want them getting suspicious.”
“Why would they be suspicious?” she demands, baffled.
Al groans and throws up his hands. “Because you’re older and you look like a girl, Sister! You’re not a kid anymore, and they’ve known us for years, and they pay attention to stuff.”
This is a serious problem that she has to deal with.
Which she’ll do as soon as she can make herself stop smiling.

Sorry its so late buf i am in an Edling mood tonight and I will never stop thinking about the idea of how theyre the epitome of right person wrong time.
(obviously in a context of like fandom shenannigans where canon events arent 100% set in stone like edling arent canon but also idc !! they are to me! im ignoring it let me be insane) ANYWAY
Even if they wanted to be together post promised day Ling has all the responsibilities of Xing and his clan and Edward would never hold him back from that for a second. Im of the opinion that brotherhood Edward feels a lot of guilt for wanting love from the people around him particularly those he sees as good (winry, alphonse, etc) especially if hes done things hes perceived as hurting them (maes’ death, the transmutation, etc etc). Which is why I think Edward connects with Ling so well cayse he doesnt carry the weight of a lot if his past mistakes, and then when the stone happens its like goddamn it i roped this guy into my shit again. Like i dont know Edward doesnt really dedicate himself so fully to people outside of winry and ed a lot so its interesting like!!
He cares about a lot of people like the majority of the allied cast and we see him be openly affectionate towards Nina and Hughes pre their deaths but I think Ling is the only person hes ever decided to stick with WITHOUT alphonse? I may be wrong but the whole sure Ill stay with you and trust my brother and Winry to stay safe and follow you around the outskirts of the east for a week till the promised day to protect my new friend is so??? what?? huh???
But anyone my point is post promised day Edward cant really ever see a future with Ling because of all the responsibility Ling holds outside of him and its veyr tragic imo like especially because in a different scenario if Ling didnt have those responsibilities and Edward wasn’t so dedicated to the people around him to a fault of never thinking about his own desires I think they could have the possibility of a future.
Like I have read a lot of fanfiction abiut Ed traveling to Xing and living with him there but?? I realistically cant see him ever doing that just solely because Edward is not the type of person to settle down! like its my one and only criticism of the fma manga is that I cannot see Edward ever being satisfied with a simple life? Like even in Fma 03 which is my favourite interpretation of Edwards character once he gets stranded in our world he learns?? Rocket Science?? For the chance to get back to Amestris but he doesnt really seem to take that goal all that seriously especially considered Alfons ends up getting involved in a lot more aircraft projects than Edward like Edwsrd genuinely enjoys learning!!
Im pretty sure he was the one who dragged Alphonse into Hoenhiems office when they were kids after he left, probably to Al’s reluctance of if they were allowed in there, and started ripping through all of his old books just to learn. Edward never stops and it gets so bad that he never stops to even consider himself constantly worrying about getting his brother back or improving the states of others lives especially when! ya know! the whole country is at stake!!
So in a circumstance post promised day where Ed decides what he wants to do (my personal favourite interpretation is either an alchemical researcher outside of directly performing alchemy, ie revolutionizing the circle matrixes and discovering nee combinations or becoming a professor of some kind) I dont think he would give that up to settle again. And obviously Ling cant exactly up and leave being Emperor unless he decides he doesnt want to, im not the most knowledgable on Lings characterization so I wont speak there but!
They have so much fun together and compliment each other and genuinely care about each other so much but their happiness and fulfillment as people to themselves and others make it so its nearly impossible they would ever realistically end up together and its really doomed and tragic!! idk i think about it a lot.
