what i find so fascinating about the war / slaughter statements is that ghosts are more common there than with other entities (or at least more memorable to me?)
there's something uniquely horrifying about all these man-made horrors in compariosn to, for example, the uncaring vastness of space. Sure that's objectively also terrifying but at the end of the day it feels more distant but war and violence? whats such an omnipresent thing through human history and most of it completely unnecessary...
Obviously it would manifest in parts as ghosts of the terrible things of the part, all bleeding together with no concern for which uniform you wore... Don't even get me started on the amount of conflicts still being fought about today that were started generations ago.
Think I might go lie down for a while. Get a cup of tea. Daisy’s got me listening to The Archers. I hate it. But it feels nice to hate something that can’t hurt me. I don’t know. That’s it, I, I guess.
oh jon...
I love that there are always clear symbols for each fear based on Jonny's experience with it
Slaughter is especially fascinating with the ghosts and the music

MAG 137 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: putting up a new fence.
"I never wanted to join up, never cared about fighting for my country. I mean, what, like my country ever fought for me? No." Fucking yes! This speaks so much to me. And I'm living in a country with socialism. But when you need the social services department the people there are doing everything in their power to keep you from getting help.
"I wasn’t scared of dying, not really." Not really-counter of S4: 5!
"No, death ain’t scary. But killing, that’s scary." While I agree with these both statements (death in like being dead myself, not so much about people dear to me being dead), I do very much find the process of dying scary. The concept of being dead just makes me feel woozy.
"The things people will do to their fellow man, just because someone with a shinier badge tells them to." This is extremely scary...
"He never lost his smile, though. Not until he heard that music." Cue the ambiance music!
"The whole time, I expected the music to reach me – to take me, to seize my heart with murderous purpose. But it never did. Even as the last of the other prisoners began to hack wildly at each other, and the waters started to flow over the sides and around my ankles, I never felt it." Because the statement giver never wanted to kill anyone, neither human nor animal. So it didn’t work on them, there never was an alignment.
GERTRUDE: "I wonder what stopped it. A Japanese radar filled with spiderwebs, a US destroyer finding itself suddenly alone in the open ocean? Heh. We’ll probably never know." This was in October 2014. Only a few months later she would test her theory about no ritual of a single entity being able to succeed.
GERTRUDE: "Well, you still have Dekker’s back-up plan, of course, but it’s very risky. To be sure, I think the detonation would need to happen from within the Unknowing, while it was going on. Gerard may have a connection to the Eye, but I’m not convinced it would be enough. And I will admit I’ve grown… fond of the boy." Growing soft there in her old days. Still, and it's not even a big surprise, but wanting to sacrifice Gerry in the Unknowing would have just been the icing on the cake of all her casualties. (This is also why I think Gertrude knew about Gerry’s tumor. The knowledge would support her intention to sacrifice Gerry, as he’s already dying.)
GERTRUDE: "I wonder if I told him about Eric, whether he’d follow in his father’s footsteps… Still, it’s not like it kept Eric safe in the end." And this as well! Keeping this information from him.
I think it's interesting that one of the themes of this season were rituals. We heard about the Sunken Sky (very briefly), The Last Feast, The Everchase and now the Risen War. Elias is working on making the Archives crew believe the Extinguished Sun is also still around. And we'll still get to a few more!
JON: "Everyone else is running towards something or running away, and I… I don’t know what I’m doing." Story of my life xDD
JON: "Daisy’s got me listening to The Archers. I hate it." Lol, I love those two idiots!
This is one of the two episodes in this season without any dialogue. The second one being MAG 139.

howdy howdy howdy, some good words, mostly rambling, one (1) reaction image bc I'm Sad About Jon Constantly All The Time. Content warnings for like, most things in the episode because I'm pulling quotes, and also existential fear (the state of the world rn) because I went on a little extinction ramble.
@a-mag-a-day
Case 9550307 – Wallis Turner. Incident occurred at the North Point prisoner of-war camp, then later the sunken ship Nemesis in late 1942. Statement taken 3rd July 1955 at the Pu Songling Research Centre, Beijing. Committed to tape 9th October 2014. Gertrude Robinson recording.
Jon, I love you, but Gertrude's way of introducing statements is way better. Although she did intentionally leave the archives in disarray so...
Like, I mean, in an ideal world, you'd be able to search for statements by people who appear in them and places and notable things that happen, and then... idk I just, alright like, I want to just, learn how to code so I can make myself a little website and organize the statements and then my little rat brain who just wants to sort things out will finally be appeased
Even if it’s just sleep, just a quiet nothing forever, it’s not like you know enough to be bored, is it?
Fun fact about yours truly, that's one of the parts of death that scares me the most! I cannot handle being bored, it's just... no, I can't do it. And boredom forever? No end in sight? I hope there is an afterlife so that I don't have to deal with that.
Worse than that is just... nothing, just an end, and I don't really like to think about that.
Sergeant once told me it’s no different from killing a chicken back home, but people aren’t chickens, and the idea that war strips us all down to just a body that moves and kills, or falls and dies, makes me feel sick to my stomach.
Fear soup! This is pretty Flesh.
I could feel my pulse quicken, like it wanted to match the tempo, though I’ve no idea why. I should have been confused, scared maybe, and I guess I was, but I could also feel my fingers tap-tap-tapping away to the beat.
Right, alright, The Slaughter and music thing makes sense to me now. It's about the... I called it group project violence? That but serious. I know The Hunt was the mob mentality episode, but like... idk, I'm not sure. Something about the music in these episodes, Jane's song of the Hive, luring you in, entrancing you. The song of the Web, making you dance to its tune. The song of the Slaughter, getting caught up in the rhythm of it all.
There's something there, I can't exactly articulate it.
[...] just before the trumpet began to drift over the waters just a few yards beyond the walls.
woodwinds against trumpets 2023
And when they were lying still and the music stopped and night was quiet again, that’s when I heard the sound that really chilled my blood. All my comrades, my fellow prisoners, cheered. And it wasn’t the cheer of those glad for freedom, it was the sound of bloodlust and cruelty.
the slaughter feels like the least... spooky of all the fears to me. like, of course, there's a lot of war ghosts, and uncontrollable urges to do violence among other things, but the thing about the slaughter really feels like human and stuff. like, all of them are, not necessarily human, but influenced by the fear of mortals -- and probably those weird jellyfish, too -- but the slaughter feels different.
also, may I just say a thing? a few of the entities aren't really made manifest by that thing happening. like, sure, the eye is the fear of being watched -- among many other things -- but you know what really breeds paranoia? not being sure if you're being watched or not. the end is the fear of death, and yet victims of the end are commonly just told when the end will come for them. the slaughter is the fear of violence in a slaughter-y way and not a hunt or desolation-y way, and a lot of the slaughter's fear comes from witnessing the violence, or dreading it.
thus the extinction manifesting wouldn't end the world, because it would be a world without fear -- like maybe it would replace humans with spooky inheritors -- but honestly I think it would be enough just to give us the knowledge, the constant dread that there are people more powerful than us who can end the world with a decision, or trash the environment knowing full well what the consequences are. I think it would be enough to look at the doomsday clock and see that we're 90 seconds to midnight. but make it spooky.
woo! existential fear! hopelessness and helplessness! i know, i know, don't give up, people can cause change, but also I am one (1) tiny little guy.
Leonard was the first to dance. Well, I think of it as a dance, though I don’t know why. He reached over and grabbed another one of the former prisoners, a scrawny guy, I think his name was Milton. He gave a cry of anger that I could never have imagined coming from his gentle, smiling lips even in the head of battle. There was nothing Milton could do. Even malnourished as he was, it was easy for Leonard to snap his arm like a twig, twist his neck until his leg spasmed and his skull started to crack. Even when his victim was clearly dead, he kept beating it, tossing the corpse across the deck with as much ferocity as if it were the most hated man alive. The bloody crew of the Nemesis watched, their eyes riveted and their feet tapping to the music.
First of all, I love the way Jonny writes violence, it feels so visceral, I don't know, just the way he describes it. It's good. 10/10.
Secondly, I've danced in like a group but like a community sort of group not a lot of times, but I have acted, and it feels similar. Like, I don't know. Something about being on stage, the lights almost blinding you, it feels invigorating, it feels like you're being swept up in something. Idk, like that scene in Mama Mia where Sophie meets all three of her dads in one dance, and then passes out.
Yeah idk.
Few wars in my lifetime have reached anywhere the near the heights of fear I suspect this ritual would need, though I did spend some time a while back looking over some details from the Cuban Missile Crisis to no avail.
Nah, mate, the cold war's a feast for the extinction! (however, soup)
Anyway, point is, you can probably discount The Slaughter. It had its chance.
I forgot these tapes were supposed to be for her successor.
oh... hmnr. and they didn't help... this one told them outright how to stop The Unknowing, there was probably one going into more detail about it. The tape she intended the Archivist to hear as soon as they got the job... well, we all know what happened to that.
That's just... sad to me.
I feel like I’m on a deadline, like I’m running out time, somehow. And I don’t even know where to go, what to look for, or—
THIS! THIS IS WHAT SEASON 4 FEELS LIKE! Weirdly stressful, despite not clearly having a... point, something to... do, it feels like that feeling you get when you're so... bored or understimulated that you're just pacing around trying to find something to do, and you can't find anything to do! And it's like, aaaaa.
That's season 4.
(oh, also, for the last time the watcher's crown was in the past, the mass ritual doesn't have a canon name and when asked, Jonny tentatively said "The Magnus Archives" however of course that's word of god and the author is dead so take it as you will, however please do know that it's not the watcher's crown)
Daisy’s got me listening to The Archers. I hate it. But it feels nice to hate something that can’t hurt me. I don’t know. That’s it, I, I guess. End recording.

mag 137 - nemesis
honestly, i'll continue to stand by my opinion that a slaughter ritual would be pretty much impossible to carry out, even if every individual ritual wasn't destined to fail. either that, or every war carried out would be a ritual. i just don't think the events that occured on the nemesis, supernatural as they might be, would be even a drop in the bucket compared to all the fear and agony caused by actual, full-scale wars. which, you know, is fascinating because there are few, if any, other entities that has such a real, powerful, and large-scale manifestation to take advantage of
though i suppose the ritual could just have been meant as more of a final push. the battery's been loaded by centuries of violence, both influenced by slaughter and the standard human kind, and now that energy is attempted to be channeled somewhere. or something like that
but yeah. i have a hard time pointing out things here that i have not pointed out in previous episodes. sometimes i fear i'm getting too repetetive in my points? please tell me if that's the case lol
once again, totally agree with this guy's view of war. i actually have a pretty big fear of getting into the army. partly cause i know i'd totally suck at it and i hate sucking at things in front of other people. and like, i know that as long as it's peacetime, it's not very realistic for it to happen, but still. i find it fucking insane that governments can just force their citizens out there as cannon fodder and they either have to go along with it or face imprisonment. i understand why it's done, but it's still a concept i find deeply uncomfortable

Its deck was too full of rust and holes to keep its big twisted metal hull from filling with water. The Nemisis, of course, floated anyway. Because spooky supernatural ships and the cosmic fear entities they’re aligned with don’t care what humans think is impossible.” It’s referencing The Bee Movie. It has 127 likes. /end ID]

also, I think mag 137 and mag 145 are the only two points where we hear gertrude expressing any kind of affection or protectiveness. we've spent all this time learning how ruthless she was, how she was willing to sacrifice innocents without a second thought in service of the greater good, and these two episodes just give us little peaks at another side of her. she wasn't just coldly using gerry as a means to an ends, she was fond of him. she kept knowledge of his father from him, seemingly mostly because she liked having him around and didn't want him trying to leave the eye, and that's absolutely messed up, but he was also one of the two allies she had left alive in the whole world. she put her neck on the line to protect jack barnabas from the cult of the lightless flame. she'd probably only ever spoken to him long enough to direct him to the desk where he could write out his statement, but she knew he was in danger and was willing to do acts of incredible violence to have him left alone.
in smirke's statement, he says that everyone he knew who spent enough time around the powers eventually fell to one of them and started working towards a ritual, but gertude remained as human as she possibly could for her whole life. I suppose it's easy to get lost in all the lies and murders and plastic explosives and just focus in on all the wrongs she did to people, but she did it all in the name of saving the world, over and over, sacrificing everything that was dear to her, from ages roughly 20 to 70. I don't think most people could have persevered for that long, but she just kept at it, and I think that speaks to an underlying passion and loyalty to humanity. when she got the chance, she threw her lot in save the life of a man she didn't know who had just happened to have fallen in love with the woman she'd bound her soul to 50 years ago.

Gertrude Robinson making fun of the Slaughter avatars for being fucking morons: Yeah! Gertrude Robinson contemplating killing Gerry: Unyeah!
I completely forgot until I relatable today that she actually planned to send Gerry into the Unknowing because of his connection to the eye. Like Michael...

hello!! im sure youve gotten this question before but im having a Harry Moment and want to get Even Weirder about it SO !! i was wondering if you have a recommendation for approaching the original comics, where to start, which runs you think are the best reads for capturing his story, stuff like that!! your blogs a joy to browse, thanks so much!!!
Hello fellow Harold enthusiast!! I have in fact gotten this question before but I'm actually quite happy to receive it again as I've long been meaning to create a Harry reading list that would (hopefully) allow people to follow his entire story up to his death
In this chronological guide I've attempted to capture Harry's journey as a character, narrowed down from my own 616 reading experience.
I tried to stay focused on Harry-centric storylines and issues, but I couldn't resist adding some casual appearances particularly during the Silver Age because 1) I think of it as foundational to just about everything that matters in Spider-Man comics and 2) Harry-centric storylines tend to show him at his most distressed. They're important and often brilliant, but reading only those issues feels like a disservice to his kind and loving qualities. It's important to experience the smaller, calmer moments with him as well to truly understand his character.
Personal favorites are bolded, if you care for my bias.
Due to the numerous Spider-Man mags that were at times running simultaneously and ping-ponging storylines between one another, titles will be abbreviated as follows;
The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) = TASM63
The Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) = TSSM76
Web of Spider-Man (1985) = WOSM85
Now let's get into it!
Harry Osborn Reading List
Flashbacks
These were published more recently, but take place before Harry's first appearance in the comics
Short about Harry's childhood and Norman's failings as a father. One of the best depictions of their relationship, in my opinion
Nice Things from Amazing Spider-Man Extra! #3
Gwen-centric miniseries set during her time in high school and giving some insight on her and Harry's longlasting friendship
Giant Size Gwen Stacy
From introduction to deathbed
Watch Harry evolve from goofy background character to Peter's most important narrative foil!
First establishing of Harry's character and his dynamics with other key personages such as Peter and Norman
TASM63 #31, #34, #39, #40
Further development of all aforementioned things. The highs and lows of Peter and Harry's life as roommates. Daddy issues. Romantic drama. Drug addiction subplot. Anything you could ask
TASM63 #46, #47, #53, #54, #57, #59, #60, #61, #62, #63, #66, #74, #82, #95, #96, #98, #105, #110, #118
The storyline that changed everything
TASM63 #119, #120, #121, #122
Harry grows increasingly suspicious and paranoid around Peter following his father's death
TASM63 #123, #124, #126, #127, #129, #134, #135
Now... here's a disclaimer for the following issues: Despite the aforementioned buildup being very well executed, the result is not exactly so and has more to do with giving the Goblin as a concept another hurrah, rather than delving into Harry's character. In fact I'd even argue they're out of character for Harry, as his behavior in them is just cartoonishly diabolical and in stark contrast to both his previously established personality and subsequent depictions of his Goblin. So yeah, these issues are technically important to the grander picture of what is happening with Harry and why, but don't expect insight lol
TASM63 #136, #137
Harry's back and his friends are more than happy to welcome him. He even moves in with Flash
TASM63 #151, #152, #153
Harry and Liz Allan enter a romance and quickly move on to engagement. He is also seen seeking psychiatric treatment
TASM63 #156, #157, #163, #166, #167
The happiness was not to last: Liz' stepbrother, Mark Raxton aka the Molten Man stirs up trouble, and she leaves the city in the aftermath. Harry seeks fault within himself and appears to be on his way to going green again – but is all as it seems?
TASM63 #172, #173, #174, #175, #179, #180
Harry and Liz have settled into the suburbs. In come more Molten Man and more insecurities!
TSSM76 #63
A mysterious foe known as the Hobgoblin has been attacking the company Harry inherited from his father and even blackmailing him with Norman's secret identity. During this troubled time, Liz and Harry are also having a baby
TASM63 #239, #244, TSSM76 #85, TASM63 #249, #250, #251, #260, #261, #263, TSSM76 #146, WOSM85 #47, TASM63 #312, TSSM76 #147
Molten Man, take three – this time with a wholesome twist
WOSM85 #61, #62
Harry briefly attempts to turn the Green Goblin into a superhero
WOSM85 #66, #67
The final Green Goblin Jr Saga – an absolute Must Read. If I could recommend just one Harry storyline, it would definitely be this one
TSSM76 #178, #179, #180, #181, #182, #183, #184, #189, #200
Post OMD Revival/"Clone Harry"
Full disclosure, I don't read much Post OMD Spider-Man. One day I might venture into it despite my gripes and add more to this section. Until then: I'd sort of be amiss not to include these two at the very least in a Harry Osborn reading list, even if recent nonsensical twists have revealed Post OMD Harry to have been a clone all along
Harry and Peter's reunion
Amazing Spider-Man Family #4
Harry cutting ties with his father. While I think this story could have been improved in numerous ways, watching Harry leave Norman behind is still pretty satisfying and I enjoy the way his relationship with Peter is portrayed in this
TASM63 #595, #596, #597, #598, #599

End of MAG 137… excuse me??? Gertrude just fully said Gerry’s father was part of it (,-_-,) he thought his father was just some guy. I’m going to start crying. Poor Gerry.
Also, Jon just listening to some random garbage as if it’s his own little therapy is pretty funny.
