#mag 166
So was no one going to remind me that in season five there’s an episode (166) where we hear about a guy named Sam trapped in a domain where the horror comes from being underground, taunted with the idea that he can in theory escape but somehow knows he won’t, it is mentioned he once worked grueling night shifts and it’s mentioned directly that time isn’t real there or do I have to keep thinking about this alone?

Absolutely loving the Jon and his feelings saga this season. This man will just casually drop "i love you"s to his boyfriend mid-sentence but when asked about his feelings on the apocalypse will struggle to say "it makes me feel.... sad..."
Martin: Jon we need to talk about your feelings
Jon: I love you?
Martin: Nice try we’re talking about your feelings

Mag 166, The Worms and episode 36 of The Silt Verses, All Lovers Part As Dust, both play on this idea of hope as a harmful force.
In mag 166 the people trapped in the buried can see light above them. They crawl painfully upwards, urged on by the hope that they will someday make it to the surface. Their hope keeps them going but makes it so much more painful every time they are washed back down and have to start again.
In The Silt Verses hope is something that can quite literally trap you. Devereaux, and the other people passing through the Amicus Hotel are so caught up in their hopes for the future that they forsake the present.
In both stories the characters' hope is harming them, causing them pain or limiting their lives. But for both, letting of that hope is still unthinkable. For the worms to let go of their hope of surfacing would mean acknowledging how truely trapped they are. For Devereaux to would mean accepting that his sister is gone.
I'm really into the idea of hope as something tortuous, something that can trap you in a cycle of pain. Both stories have people hoping desperately for something they can never have. They tear themselves up trying to reach it. I enjoy the subversion of something we usually view as only positive. The acknowledgement that even the things that seem wholely good have the potential to hurt.
The two episodes are in the end about different things. Mag 166 is about the crushing burden of poverty and systemic oppression. Being trapped in a miserable life with no way out. Clinging to the vain hope that with enough work you could improve your circumstances and escape that misery. All Lovers Part As Dust is about living too much in the past and the future. Hoping for something so intensely that it consumes your life. Not only will you most likely not get what you hope for you will also miss chances for other good things.
As such the mag 166 ends hopelessly, there will be no end to the suffering. All Lovers Part As Dust, however ends more ambiguously. We are left to interpret whether Sebastian and Devereaux escape. We are left with some hope, though fittingly the ambiguity means that hope brings no comfort.
Something that is so great about horror is its ability to flip our perception. It allows us to see how something usually wonderful can be horrifying. It validates those who have found only pain in the things we are told should comfort us. Hope can be good. Clinging to hope can be the thing that pulls you through a hard time. But it can also trap you and when your pain has no end it can be cruel.

MAG 166 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: cutting the Kolkwitzia amabilis in my garden.
MARTIN: "What happened back there? What you did to Sa–" [HE CUTS HIMSELF OFF.] [A PAUSE.] JON: "Go on. Say it." Oh no. Oh god, does Jon think that Martin thinks it was his fault that Sasha died?
HELEN: "Oh, goodness. You see what you’ve done to the poor boy, John? He’s coming to me for clear answers." Oh Helen really knows how to get under one's skin.
HELEN: (giggle) "It’s very satisfying though, isn’t it? Teasing out vague information? You see why Elias got a kick out of it." Oh fuuuck, and now she's comparing him to Elias? Jon really is straight up not having a good time..
TMA usually is super vague, but I'm actually happy we got an explanation how the smiting works. Does sound plausible, I’d say. But also, this explanation about there only being watcher and watched should have got Martin's gears to turn. They are not victims of a domain. So they have to be watchers.
MARTIN: "Sure. Okay, that’s – I mean, that’s really not that complicated, John; I don’t see why you were being so coy about it –" JON: (overlapping) "Because I’m ashamed, Martin." [SLIGHT PAUSE.] MARTIN: "Ashamed?!" JON: "Yes! Ashamed of the fact that I just – destroyed the world and have been rewarded for it, the fact that – I can walk safe through all this horror I’ve created like a… fucking tourist, destroying whoever I please. The fact that I… enjoyed it, and… the fact that there are so many others that I want to revenge myself on!" Why does everything in TMA feel so natural!! There is so much bad and boring writing out there, every time something very logical happens it makes me super excited xD  So yap. It's super understandable that he's ashamed of all of this. Especially since we know how he actually feels about this revenging stuff. His anger says “do it!”, but his logic says “It’s not gonna do anything”..
MARTIN: "…No; No, I actually think you’re good on that front." JON: "What?" MARTIN: "Yeah, I, I, I think we should go for it, get our murder on!" Martin, when he only remotely tastes power xD
MARTIN: "f you want to stop them and have the power to, then – then, then yeah, let’s do it, let’s go full Kill Bill!" JON: "I – I, I haven’t seen it." Laughed so hard at this xD Of course he is deflecting.
HELEN: "Oh, Martin, I am so proud of you. Can I come?" JON & MARTIN: (in unison) "No." HELEN: "So that’s a strong “maybe” then?" Asgdsdfjkdf, Helen can also be so funny! One of those characters I hate and love!
MARTIN: "Do you need anything?" [JON EXHALES.] JON: "No." Love that Martin checks in with him there. He has been a bit dismissive of Jon's feelings about this whole situation.
Yeah, that statement does nothing to me, neither terror nor excitement. As far as I understand it, it's more about the financial part of the Buried. About the pressure of the society we live in, ever trapped in bullshit jobs with only ever a glint of the prospect of escape and there is no use in fighting others like us (that second worm part) cause if we win against them, we’re stuck exactly where we were before.
"The rains fall here as they do so many places in this new world. Thick and oily drops that taste of bitter salt, torrential tears plummeting from the watching sky, thumping and squelching onto the thirsty soil in which the worms writhe painfully towards a surface that does not want them." That is a gross image!
"How do you fight, when you cannot move beyond the slowest inching crawl, without limbs or weapons or the kinetic force of violence? You do it slowly, pressing, biting, tearing gradually through each other until at the very end, one of you is still." There is a very horrifying animatic of this part of the statement, it's called "The Worms (Magnus Archives Fan Animation)”.
JON: "God, I hate the Buried." Mh, he was there once...
That phone's got to be a Nokia 3310, right? XD It is the Nokia ringtone after all!
ANNABELLE: "He’s more powerful here than he’s ever been, isn’t he? And you’re not sure what that means for you." [THE BRIEFEST OF PAUSES. MARTIN INHALES SHAKILY.] MARTIN: "I’m hanging up now." ANNABELLE: "Does he even need you at all?" That part about "you're not sure what that means for you" is actually something I could relate to. Especially in a relationship this young and under extremely high stress levels. Shared trauma and being in the same life-threatening situation can create incredibly strong bonds. Being in that same boat. But how life-threatening is it actually for them? Aside from his guilt and post trauma, Jon is very much fine in this new world. Still, not sure what Annabelle wanted to achieve with this, she does mention it to have been "clumsy", so yeah.
[THE PREVIOUSLY-HOWLING THINGS IN THE BURIED – LIKELY THE WORMS FAR BELOW – HOWL AGAIN, INSISTENTLY.] MARTIN: "I know, right?" Adflkdhfs, this episode has some great comedy!

Okay so I listened for a whole bunch without writing posts about it but in my defence let's just say that it's been hectic, going back to both studying and working :C
So, let's make one thing clear: the bits with Sasha and Tim broke my heart. 'Nooo, you took it too far! I'm unforgettable!' OH YE MAYBE JUST RIP IT OUT OF MY CHEST HUH. ;-; But also oh god, Elias's whole behaviour on that tape. Did I already mention that Elias's motivation is evil in a very simple way? Oh yeah I did. Oh wait I'll add the read more because this will be a bunch.
So. So every single human being in the world is now tortured except for the ones who are doing the torturing and Jon because he's <checks notes> Ceaseless Watcher's Special Boy and Martin because Jon basically protects him. And maybe Basira who is chasing after Daisy apparently. Gosh it's like. Obviously it's fiction, obviously when you think about it, it's horrible. Throughout the whole four seasons I was really chill about the statements and well, objectively I still am because it's not that easy for me to find something in fiction 'scary' but it is a bit easier for me to find something 'disturbing' and a lot of these domains quickly become such if I think about it for a while.
Since this is honestly my first proper, deep experience with horror, I have to admit that it's a feeling I'm not very used to when consuming fiction but it's also a very interesting one.
Anyway, this aside... I mean this feeling will likely follow me for a while but you know, it's not all I think about this season. So this aside, a bunch of other stuff.
CEASELESS WATCHER, TURN YOUR GAZE UPON THIS WRETCHED THING. Oh that scene was so damn cool, love it, Jon can just smite people <3 The way Martin's reaction was an immediate whoa! omg we gotta do it again! Jared was so chill with being smote lmao
Helen is such a shipper of Jmart and she's so valid for it. My friend described season 5 as only fluff and comedy and I was like literally no way. And it is very much NOT oh god. I mean she has really strong powers of denial. I told her hey you... Know that TMA generally is more of a tragedy right... And she said that it really only hit her once she started reading fanfics heh. I mean she's valid for her denial powers, that's for sure, but STILL
AND ALSO OH GOD EPISODE 170. I got so emotional over this one. There was just something about the way Martin kept losing his train of thought and starting over again and again and he realised something was wrong a few times and called out to Jon but lost that thought too, it was. Damn. Damn.
By the way, I see the way Jon finds it all horrible and fascinating at the same time, the way he kind of... Does want to drink all that fear in. He told Martin 'you are my reason' regarding the quest, regarding walking through all of it but I think it also applies to not... Losing himself, so to speak.
And also oh damn the children. There is something... I mean it's like, it's like the danger almost doesn't exist. Are those monsters there or is it just their imagination that Callum nudges into even scarier directions? And the fact that they're basically cultivated by the fears until they grow up and their fears become something more interesting to the Eye. Damn.
Things also sound rather tense between Jon and Martin at times, but honestly I'm not surprised, considering... The whole situation. I'm just glad they can be there for each other even though the world sucks :C

The contrast in Worms between Jon basically on the edge of a panic attack almost the entire Episode and Martin just trying to make the best of a situation so horrible it's basically beyond comprehension by talking to the screaming souls beneath the Earth and hanging up on Annabelle Cain is both hilarious and distressing.
Also, gotta love Martin hitting stride with his murder push. Just takes one look at ancapistan and says: "is no one going to be a murderous vigilante?" And doesn't wait for an answer.

"God I hate the Buried" well SHIT it hadn't actually occurred to me until now that with this statement Jon's practically reliving his traumatic experience.
Like, he has a mark for every fear and all, but the war of the trenches was very different from the unpredictable violence of Melanie's stabbing, and the sickness of the village had nothing to do with burrowing larvae. But this one? The unending painful crawling and the thin promise of light and the too-close-i-cannot-breathe? Word for word his trip into and out of the Coffin. He's being forced to experience that all over again without being able to help.
Idk it's just really fucked how even after Helen explains to us that Jon is explicitly in the Feared group, among those who benefit, and even after Jon confesses his guilt about his privilege, the apocalypse still forces him to be afraid. Even here he feeds the Eye his own terror
