Jon’s little whispered “it is remarkably easy to buy an axe in central London,” will always be one of my favourite random lines from TMA. The police may claim to be tackling knife crime but nothing can stop one (1) sleep deprived archivist with unchecked paranoia

Gerry Keay really is the Character of all time.
Remember when we first met him through the eyes of that nurse and she was like “this man is literally covered in third degree burns everywhere except around the weird eye tattoos all over his joints. he should not be Physically Able to stand up through all that pain” and you were like “oh shit here’s another evil person with evil powers” but no. gerry really is Just Some Guy. he Was in debilitating pain from the third degree burns all over his entire body, he just decided not to deal with that fact until after he killed the bad fire man.
He also ignored any and all symptoms from a stage 4 brain tumor. like, it’s possible he just didn’t have any symptoms, that happens sometimes, but I feel like he probably had symptoms, he just Did Not Allow Them To Be Perceived. Migraines? No. Loss of sensation? Fuck that. Fatigue? He’s been exhausted for his whole entire life he doesn’t know what it’s like to Not be tired. Memory loss? Prolly that lonely avatar he fucked up last week.
And you Know life as Gertrude’s assistant was not like… a boring inactive desk job. I put one thousand moneys on the fact that she realized that this guy could push through any pain ever, and so she just sent him on progressively more dangerous and physically demanding tasks just to see if there was a limit
Gerry!! Keay!! He’s Just Some Guy, but he’s also covered in scars and marks and regularly experiencing debilitating pain, and he just looks at it and says “no thanks not for me actually. I got shit to do, people to save, leitners to burn, and old men to beat to shit.”
11/10 dude. no notes.

Since the beginning of our species we have figured out how to eat things we really shouldn't,
So what mosters do you think would be edible? (Besides the pig) And how would they taste?

I think i finally understand how the Distortion works. I mean, i don’t think it’s possible to ever fully understand it, and i don’t know the whole picture yet because i don’t know what Helen will be like, but i feel like i’ve just been granted a glimpse at the lovecraftian (as in ineffable) thing that is this being.
It’s not a person and a creature fighting inside one mind. There’s no Michael clawing himself to the surface to express his emotions and get his revenge.
Michael Shelley is dead. The Distortion became Michael. It sounds so simple, yet a least in my opinion it’s hard to fully understand.
I think what provides the best metaphor is a small thing the Distortion says after becoming Helen: "without a proper mind." The Distortion does not have its own mind. It’s only a what, but in order to really exist in this reality, it needs a who. It needs a body, but also a mind.
So if i understand this right, it’s like this: Michael Shelley is dead. His conciousness is not there anymore. And the Distortion got forced into that mind, an empty mind of a dead person. This doesn’t make it human, it’s still able to understand the impossible, it’s still the thing that was created to scare and kill. But in the mind it’s living in… the previous owner’s furniture is still there. It gets the dead person’s memories. It becomes Michael, in the sense that it has to be someone. Its existence got tied to being Michael, although Michael Shelley is dead.
When Michael got "emotional", that wasn’t Michael Shelley coming through. It was the Distortion grappling with the side effects of being someone - of living in a mind with all the memories and the human emotions that a human mind can’t fully turn off, even when the thing inhabiting it isn’t human at all.
The Distortion was Michael in the sense that it was thinking with Michael Shelley’s mind. When it became Helen, its consciousness, its being stayed the same, but it needed to adapt to this new mind. It could see clearer now, realizing that the windows of the previous house had been dirty, realizing that the wirings of the previous mind had driven it to do something that it actually didn’t want to do. The throat of the Spiral itself getting caught in the spiralling of its own, borrowed mind.

Thinking of it the fact my Best Friend's Wedding which ends with what would now be an extremely Aro coded woman and a gay man dancing and laughing together, it's no wonder it was my favourite romantic comedy as a kid.
Like, watching it now it's like ah Juliette, you are Aro but you don't know it. Your happy ending would never have been a romantic relationship with Michael.
Like to explain how surprising this ending is (just go to the reblogs I put videos that highlight it), even now it ends with her saying good bye to the person she thought she romantically loved. This is a romcom. The entire time you have felt empathy for her but you never want her to succeed. At least for me I never wanted her to get the man, but here at the end she doesn't. It's very bittersweet for a romcom... So they don't end it there. They bring back the friend who has been supporting her the entire movie and is in on all the schemes she's been up to and trying to get her to just tell the truth and move on.
He does what in any other romantic movie would be the sweeping romantic gesture where she realizes the man she wasn't looking at was the one that loved her all along.
But he's gay and he is in a relationship. The movie makes clear from the start he isn't the rebound or the dark horse romance. Instead the gesture is explicitly not romantic. It's an inside joke between them and he's there as her friend because he's seen how wrecked she is by the whole ordeal and wants to make her feel better. Platonically. That's how this romcom ends.
It's not perfect (the movie's from 1993 and a queer Platonic plot I doubt was the true intention), but when you're not inclined to romantic love sometimes it feels like you can't win against romance. Media makes romance the highest goal, the most important thing. The protagonist finds romantic love and lives happily ever after. But this movie even though it's very much about romance it's also about platonic friendships.
In the end she saves the wedding because although he rejects her Michael is still her friend.
Despite wanting to hate her she actually finds the romantic rival likeable and charming and if not for this man between them they would probably get along as friends. She tracks her down to set things straight.
Her editor and friend talks her through things, supports her, urges her to do the right thing, and roasts her when she's being an idiot, and is the person standing with her at the end giving us an uplifting and satisfying ending. Where for the protagonist romantic love doesn't conquer all, but platonic love certainly makes life better.
