"And here we have your dorm, Team JNPR." Professor Port said, waving his hand to the door. "Here, you shall share the adventure that is camaraderie, self-improvement, and dare I say, maybe even romantic pursuits?" He wiggled his bush mustache with a chuckle, though it was only amusing to one student. Two of them blushed and looked away, while the third simply stared with dull eyes. "But there will be enough time for that later. You may awaken at any time prior to your first class, but we expect all students to be in their seats before class begins at eight."

"Eight at night?" Nora bounced off the heels of her rabbit feet.

"Ho ho! That is quite the... terrible idea, actually." Professor Port answered, furrowing his brow in thought. He quickly shook his head. "But no, eight in the morning. Breakfast will be served until seven forty-five." He then opened the door, allowing the students into their new home. "Your scrolls should unlock this door, the same as any teaching faculty member may enter, should the need arise." He stepped away, turning away. "This marks the end of your tour around campus. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. I will leave you four to get settled in."

The large professor then left, leaving the four students alone in their room. The thin, blond boy with a hanging dog tail quickly ran into what was the bathroom. The sounds of retching filled the room, making a proper introduction pretty much impossible. However, this did nothing to stop the other three from making their intros to one another.

"I'm Nora, and this is Ren!" The girl pulled the taller boy closer to her. "We're best friends! Together since we were kids!" She then stopped herself. "Oh, but not together-together, you know?"

"I... guess?" Pyrrha flicked her large, round chinchilla ears. "I'm Pyrrha Nikos."

"Well, we already knew that! Right, Ren?" The tall boy simply hummed in agreement.

"Oh." Pyrrha sighed when suddenly, the bathroom door opened. Shambling out was their leader, a pale and sickly-looking boy. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah." He groaned, wiping his forehead. "I just need to take my medicine."

"If you die, can Pyrrha be our leader?"

"Nora!" Ren chided, the first words to come out of his mouth. "I'm very sorry about her. What was your name again?"

"I'm Jaune, Jaune Arc." Suddenly, he got a second wind, standing up straight to look confident. His tail even wagged a little. "Short, sweet, and rolls off the tongue. The ladies love it."

"Was your puke short and sweet when it rolled off your tongue?" Nora asked, earning another chide and apology from Ren.

Pyrrha simply giggled. "Do you need any help, Jaune? We are partners after all."

"Yeah, we are, huh?" Jaune's tail seemed to wag a bit more.

"Are you sure this is the right person, ma'am?"

"Well, you don't see anyone else, do you, Emerald?" Cinder replied. "Are you Marcus Black?"

The boy heaved heavy breaths as he stood on shaky legs. There was blood all over his shirt and it seemed like every breath was agony for him. He looked up to the two, taller women and answered them.

"No, I'm Mercury. Marcus is my dead." With a light groan, pointing to the burning house behind him. "He was in there."

"Was?" Cinder asked. "Did he leave?"

"Kinda." The boy answered. "He's dead. He's dead and I killed him."

The boy was still in shock, clearly. Not taking any chances, Cinder sent Emerald to the house to confirm. Unfortunately, the boy was right and the assassin they needed was dead inside, buried under a burning support beam. This put a wrench in Cinder's plans, but not for long as she smiled at the boy being tended to by Emerald.

"How would you like to come with us?" Cinder asked, sweetly as a serpent to a mouse. With nowhere else to go, Mercury joined the serpent, and her green-haired friend.

“You cant keep doing this to yourself,” Weiss said as she rubbed a little lotion onto Nora’s back, unconsciously following the electricity scars that ran down her skin. “I know you made a promise to him-” 

“And I have to keep him safe!” Nora sighed and tried to relax as her muscles tightened from the cold lotion. “Ren needs me too.” 

“He does, but that doesnt mean you have to drop everything for him. He can take care of himself too.” 

“Yeah but-” 

“No buts. He, Yang, and Ruby will be fine.” 

“What if they arent though? Ren is all I had for a while and if I lose him… then… where does that leave me?” 

“WIth your girlfriend.” Weiss sighed and pulled her hand away from Nora’s back and gently turned her around. A small smile crossed her lips as she put a hand to her girlfriend’s cheek. “But you need to calm down and relax. I know you’re a maiden now and letting your emotions run wild isnt going to help anyone. You need to trust that Ren will be okay and that our friends will come back safe.”

“Is that why you didnt go with Ruby?” Nora asked. “Because you trust her?” 

“That… and other things.” Weiss sighed and looked over at her computer, spreadsheet after spreadsheet pulled up from data on the SDC and how her father had been running the company on the screen. “I’m in charge of the SDC, I have you I need to stick by while we figure out how to help you with your powers, Atlas has its own problems… I’ve had to stop with huntressing for now until everything is settled.” 

“You say that like staying with me is hurting you.” 

“Its not. Its… this is all a bump in the road, but we’ll get through this.” Weiss kissed Nora and stood up. “In the morning we can do more training and tests. I… I think I know a way to help hold back your power for a bit until you can get used to it.” 

Nora winced and rubbed her wrists. “Not going to be like last time and those bracelets you had me wear, right?” 

“No, not this time. I need some time to go over my father’s notes and I can let you know more in the morning, okay?” 

“Fine.” 

“Good. Now get some rest. You need to let yourself heal.” 

Nora rolled her eyes and smiled a bit. “Who knew you cared so much.” 

“I’ve always cared. Even if it never looks like it, I always care about you.”

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Before the vault, guilt and self loathing are her biggest struggles. After the vault, it's anger all the way down. Not that guilt and self loathing went anywhere, of course.

👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them? does your oc have any siblings?

Her father left when she was seven and she hasn't had contact with him since, and for a long time her relationship with her mother was strained, but polite. It's nonexistent by the time she moves to Boston. She still speaks with her maternal grandmother and aunt a few times a year over the phone--they often call with updates on her mother and youngest sister. She's the eldest of three sisters (the other two are named Grace and Gene). They were close as children, but Grace's death and Nora's decision to leave for Boston put a strain on her relationship with Genie.

She's happily married; her husband Dana is supportive, even if he doesn't or can't understand where she's coming from sometimes.

🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast?

Black coffee and an omelet with mushrooms, green onions, and peppers. Bonus: comfort dinner is homemade tamales and unsweet iced tea. She doesn't have a sweet tooth.

🍁 MAPLE LEAF - what is their favourite season? why?

Spring. Nora's from Arizona, and the rain and new growth of spring are enchanting to her.

🌏 EARTH - will they give up the world for someone they love? is this decision easy for them?

Yes, definitely--her world, at least. It's not an easy decision, and something she may regret making, or go back and forth on. (I'm... gonna hold my full thoughts on this until I've got my fic published, because like, spoilers.)

🎭 MASKS - do they act differently around certain people? what's different between the way they act around friends, family, strangers, etc.?

Yes, definitely different depending on who's around/who she's speaking to. She's straight-faced around everyone, and has a dry, deadpan sense of humor. Friends and family see the humorous side much more than any stranger does; she typically doesn't make jokes unless she's comfortable with people (though for a real zinger, she'll make an exception. Sarcasm has its uses, after all).

She's definitely been described as a stick in the mud, or as having resting bitch face. The latter is not entirely inaccurate.

⚙️ GEAR - what are your ocs thoughts on science & art? which do they give more importance to? how much value do they place on each?

Her biggest hobby is gardening, which is science and art rolled into one. For Nora, they're two sides of the same coin, each as important as the other.

🌠 SHOOTING STAR - if they could make any wish with no repercussions, what wish would they make?

Oh, easy. She wants to go back in time and do things differently, with the benefit of hindsight.

💘 HEART W/ ARROW - what traits do they look for in a relationship? do they believe in love at first sight?

She looks for honesty and affirmation. She needs to feel trusted by her partner, and able to trust in turn.

She doesn't believe in love at first sight, but she's a demiromantic ace, so she'll acknowledge it may be a thing for other people and not for her.

I'm a month late on this ask, sorry! I would've said we'd get it at RTX, since that's a big event and people would be compelled to buy tickets and attend so as to be among the first to know. But here we are a month later and yup! They're gonna reveal it at RTX, surprise, surprise XD

As for the length, I've heard from several people (and one of the writers iirc?) that it'll be a short volume with fewer episodes, but I don't remember the actual number.

i know that i am far from the first person to say it, but i really am disappointed thinking abt the wasted potential in nora’s story arc in volume 8. 

[more under the cut, but disclaimer, i am mostly rambling] 

like, before vol. 8, i didn’t really care much for nora either way. i thought renora was fine & a good background ship, and sometimes nora got a laugh out of me, other times i thought she was annoying, but in general i just was pretty ambivalent abt her and wished she got some more character development which she never seemed to (besides for a little bit in vol. 4, though that was more of ren’s arc than hers, but still i will take what i can get. it’s probably my favorite part of vol. 4 considering mostly i find 4 & 5 to be very boring)

then in vol. 8 they sort of tried to give her her own character arc! i thought it was sort of weird timing & kind of sudden but hey! i’ll take what i can get. and it was also a sign of the writers trying their best & remedying some past mistakes (they did this with cinder, too, trying to fill in the blanks by giving a character arc now - no matter what i feel abt these characters, i do appreciate this. better late than never, right?) 

but like a lot of other aspects of rwby, nora’s story arc suffered from bad writing and lack of direction. it could’ve been much better thought out. it started out strong, with nora’s feelings of not knowing who she was and her worth when she is not with ren - which makes sense, considering those two characters have been joined at the hip & a package deal since vol. 1, but with the circumstances of the plot in vol. 8, they finally separated. even the fact that she talked abt these feelings with weiss and blake was really good in my opinion, because in some way it showed that she was close enough with these other teammates of hers that she could talk abt these feelings.

then she goes maximum  because she thinks what she is good at is “be strong & hit stuff”. i have mixed feelings on this because while i do think that this was a cool scene and was very crucial to this character arc, we have never seen nora having a limit on her powers before (or at least i don’t think we have?) considering she has been hit by lightning multiple times & also lightning shots from dust, but considering vol. 8 tried to mess with multiple characters’ semblances i was willing to put up with it.

the real pinnacle moment of her arc was, while injured and recovering, penny is getting taken over by watson’s interference, and nora is able to comfort penny and help her with the “it’s just a part of you- don’t forget about the rest” moment. that was probably my favorite moment of all of vol. 8. it was really meaningful and emotional in a way that i don’t think the rest of the volume managed to successfully do and the framing of the scene was fantastic. it showed a new side of nora, where she is using her own struggles to empathize and help her teammate and friend. really great stuff.

from then on the arc kind of... fizzles out? 

my least favorite aspect of nora’s arc is the fact that they use her getting injured as a reason why ruby’s team doesn’t really do anything else until after they are reunited with yang’s team. 

they try to conclude it with her and ren’s reconciliation and her going “i need time on my own to figure out who i am without you” kind of thing. but then they don’t take the excellent opportunity for her to be someone who falls at the end of vol. 8? instead, she and ren are one of the very few characters that make it to vacuo! if she had fell instead of jaune (or they both could’ve fallen) you really could’ve had her go on more of a journey of self-discovery without ren by her side. OR! ren could’ve fallen and nora could’ve made it to vacuo. she wanted time by herself to figure herself out, but how would she react to knowing that she will only ever be by herself now that (she thinks) ren is dead? it could’ve been some compelling stuff! 

the biggest waste of potential is the fact that nothing comes of her interaction with penny. for such a pivotal moment in her arc, nora and penny really don’t have a meaningful connection for the rest of the volume? 

penny’s death was already a really badly written moment meant more for shock value. in my opinion, her dying and making winter the new winter maiden was a big waste of future story potential and made the fact that penny even came back at the beginning of vol. 7 a real waste of time (if penny hadn’t been brought back in the first place we would basically be at the same place we are in now. penny would be dead & winter would’ve been the winter maiden. nothing really changed much abt winter to warrant her getting the maiden power now instead of earlier. she would’ve just had a change of heart and left ironwood to join the main cast as the winter maiden at the same time as the heroes left ironwood instead of afterwards.) it would’ve been so much more meaningful if, after her interaction with nora, penny decided to make nora the winter maiden. it would’ve been a change of pace and actually made her character arc MEANT something. her feelings, her development, and her interactions with penny would have been significant and meaningful, instead of just one nice scene that wasn’t really addressed again and becoming a waste of potential. 

it would’ve also made penny coming back in the first place only to die later mean something to, because nora definitely never would’ve become the winter maiden without it. 

overall, nora’s arc in vol. 8 really just felt like a vague attempt at writing something for nora without actually changing anything. it felt like busywork, something for her to do without much real thought behind it. i do not have much high hopes for them continuing her arc next volume, especially considering the arc they already gave her. i hope i am wrong, i hope that what they did in vol. 8 with nora has some actual consequence (either good or bad) but genuinely i feel like they only gave nora an arc because they realized she hadn’t done anything interesting in a while and threw something in there for her. like a lot of rwby, it suffers from the rushed writing. if they had more time to write and develop the script more, they might have realized how meaningless nora’s interactions with ren and penny were this volume because of how she basically ends in the same place she started, and might have done something abt it. i’m hopeful that since they aren’t putting vol. 9 out after only a single year like they did with the rest of the volumes, there will be better writing, but i’m not too hopeful considering all the other projects crwby is working on at the same time as vol. 9.
