Melanism Melanism is the development of a dark pigment (melanin) in the skin of an organism, which, like albinism alters the appearance of the organism. Examples of melanism in the animal kingdom include the Black Panther (a melanic form of the leopard), coral snakes, birds (such as flamingos), canids and squirrels.
Melanism can often be described as adaptive as the development of dark pigment in the skin can be beneficial to the species (and thus there is a greater chance of reproduction due to its ability to be camouflaged), for example the Black Panther which hunts at night. Melanism can also be described as industrial. Industrial Melanism occurs in urban environments with high volumes of pollution in which organisms evolve pigmentation to match levels of pollution. The common example of this is the Peppered Moth. This moth originally lived on light coloured lichens and thus was a light colour to camouflage itself. However, when high levels of air pollution killed the lichens, it exposed the dark coloured bark of the trees, meaning lighter coloured moths were less likely to survive. A mutation that appeared at least a century ago had led to the existence of a population of much darker moths, and these moths seemed to proliferate in cities before the establishment of clean air rules in the 1960s - a seemingly testable example of rapid species evolution There has been much controversy over this 'perfect' example of selection; and as such Michael Majerus embarked on an experiment including 4864 moths to confirm whether the theory was correct. Sadly Majerus died before being able to publish his results, but four of his colleagues then wrote up and published a paper on his findings verifying that in fact there was a large difference in predation rates affecting those moths (which is linked below). ~SA Image: http://bit.ly/1KLs1Tv Melanistic Eastern Grey Squirrel by Ryan Hodnett Further Reading: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-36424768 - Peppered Moth Controversy http://bit.ly/1LSGvD0 - Molecular Genetics and Evolution of Melanism in the Cat Family by Eizirik, Yuhki, Johnson, Menotti-Raymond, Hannah and O'Brien. http://bit.ly/1ChC9lG - Black Flamingo.

As soon I saw this tower in my peripheral vision I immediately turned around to go investigate. Wow, what a find! This French Second Empire mansion was built in 1891 for Michael Majerus, by architect Theodore Kevenhoerster. It cost $5,000 to build and was the owner's second home. Majerus hailed from Germany and was a dry goods merchant. The exterior detail on this home is amazing so make sure to zoom in to see some of the decorative friezes. #historichomesofminnesota #oldhouselove #archi_ologie #mansardmonday #mansard #frenchsecondempire #secondempire #secondempirearchitecture #brickhouse #towerlove #houseaddict #thisoldhouse #chasing_facades #iloveoldhouses #stcloudmn, #storyteller, #brickstory, #travelnow, #travelamerixa, #towering, #dreamhome, Shared from @historicminnesota .
