Make things. Make things that you can share with your friends and those you care for. I made, in a fit of brewing madness, a burnt mead (not actually burnt, just caramelized honey) and gave a bottle to my friends as a housewarming gift. 9 years later, on a cold winter night while we all ate takeout, my friend produced the bottle with a flourish and a smile. We drank delicious, smooth, caramelized and sunshine-y mead and talked about how things have changed, how we had changed, and how we care for each other. Make things and share them with people you care about.

If you engage in creative arts but get stressed out in the middle of projects, remember that the middle is the worst part! Things are half-done so they look weird. Go ahead and finish it. You're going to be so happy when it's done. And then show me what you made! emojis: smile with three hearts, black heart, blue heart, masked

I’m sitting around, watching videos of Alan Menken playing the songs he’s written, and it really does bring back memories of seeing a lot of the movies he composed for on the big screen as a little girl.
Specifically, The Little Mermaid.
You don’t know frustration, until you are seven years old, and none of the other girls in the car on the way home from Brownie Scouts can sing “Part of Your World” on key or on rhythm to the cassette tape.
But it’s that movie that made me want to make things. I wanted to sing and draw and write things. I can’t draw by the way, I am awful at visual art. But I’m a great singer, and the writing goes pretty well most days.
I wouldn’t have this drive to make things without those movies and those songs. And we can talk all day long about the narrative and thematic problems in old Disney movies until we die. As adults, of course we can.
But there is something about that music and those movies that really grips onto little kids in a very big way.
And I really, really want the little kids who are going to go see the new live action Little Mermaid to walk out of that movie with that same eagerness to make stuff.
Whatever, don’t listen to me, I’m old.

Fine tuning this pose for Calico Jill. I had the idea yesterday to add suspenders to her character design, and I like them a lot.
I think over the next few sketches I want to get better at making the fabric look fabric-y and the hands look more anatomically correct. I also need to figure out what I want to do with the nose/mouth area. One of these days I’ll look into hat designs as well.
My goal is to keep redoing this sketch until the different elements to it are up to snuff.
