Going for a run.
So this morning, as I often do on a Sunday, I went for a run. Weekdays I usually do 5k before breakfast but Sundays I often do 10k. My time today was 55mins 44 seconds for 10k which is not too shabby for someone my age.
Then while I was eating breakfast I watched the start of the London marathon, the men's race was won by Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum in a time of two hours one minute 25 seconds. Now the marathon is 42.195k so that is 4plus times what I ran in about an hour so Kiptum was running twice as fast and for twice the time. He is 23 years old not a bad time for someone his age.
After breakfast I made sawdust and plywood, of which more soon.

Okay but given that you can make alcohol from just about any plant, a world built around Minecraft could have SUCH a liquor cabinet.
You’ve got your basics, the potato and wheat vodka, gin, whiskey, then rum from sugarcane or beet sugar if you’re feeling a little adventurous.
Then you’ve got the fancier things. Dandelion and melon wine, spike vodka, pumpkin liqueur, applejack. Zhuyeqing jiu and chocolate liquor if you REALLY want to go for the cool stuff.
You’ve got mead and all kinds of moonshine, everything from carrots to kelp to sawdust brandy if you live out in the Badlands. Sunflower and rose spirits, lilac wine, even milk liquor and advocaat if you want to deviate from plants a bit.
But then you’ve got the plants that don’t exist in our sphere.
Chorus liqueur, dripleaf absinthe, glowberry champagne and sweet berry wine, glow lichen beer and crème de spore blossom, golden apple cider, glistering cordial. For the truly danger-seeking, wither rose lanique.

Alhaitham and Kaveh - not 'friends' but 'roommates'
(This is a reworked excerpt taken from my Haikaveh essay! If you're interested you can check it out here or as a pdf <3)
Due to Chinese game restrictions, explicit mentions of homosexuality or overt queer references have resulted in less implicit ways of conveying queer relationships or characters. Therefore, same-sex characters in romantic relationships are assigned the platonic status of “best friend” or “friends”.
Tumblr media
As such, these restrictions can be used as guidelines in establishing queercoding within Genshin Impact. It is of note, however, that this rule does not mean that all characters who are canonically “friends” are in a romantic same-sex relationship. Differentiating between same-sex couples and platonic friends (who have all been assigned the label ‘friends’) can be done by identifying particular care undertaken to ‘style’ characters. This is done so by queercoding, as in, using taboos linked to queerness; references which point to romantic connotation; or omitting certain details which casts obscurity on the nature of their ‘friendship’.
Alhaitham and Kaveh’s relationship has been styled in this way, as although various titles have been given to their relationship status, there has been no definitive term supplied overall. Alhaitham tells the Traveller that the two are “roommates”, with Kaveh confirming this, although stating that they “used to be friend(s), but not anymore”.
Within Kaveh’s Character Stories, their history as “best friends” is a painful one of separation, which can be seen as akin to a break-up, and despite their lack of status as ‘friends’, the two share an intimate knowledge of the other that no other character is privy too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Condensing their relationship down to ‘roommates’ is an oversimplification that the narrative challenges the player to question.
This is achieved through their rapport with each other, seen within Alhaitham purposefully goading Kaveh, something which he cannot be seen to do persistently with any other character, as well as Kaveh’s unique reactions to Alhaitham, which present a side to him unlike which can be observed in his interactions with others. Additionally, the two mention the other without them present, as Alhaitham mentions Kaveh unprompted twice within the Archon Quest and once within his Story Quest, and Kaveh is prone to discussing Alhaitham with those who are aware of them living together, as Collei observes: “Seems like you always include him in the conversation, even when he isn’t here…”
When the two confirm themselves to be roommates, this is immediately followed by Paimon asking Kaveh if they are friends, to which Kaveh does not give a definitive answer too. When Paimon asks Alhaitham the same question in the Archon Quest, Alhaitham evades the question, and turns it back on Paimon, who notes that “[she] doesn’t know. That’s why [she’s] asking,” to which Alhaitham then describes Kaveh as his roommate. Although, this still is an evasion of Paimon’s initial question, Alhaitham neither denies nor confirms their friendship status. The status of their relationship is constantly called into question, for the characters they interact with, and for the player.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This casts an ambiguity over their relationship which aligns with Chinese gaming regulations in regard to same-sex couples, which in turn, points to a certain ‘styling’ of relationship which differs from general platonic friendships within the game. Where both platonic friendships and same-sex relationships can only be openly dubbed as ‘friendship’, signifiers must be present in order to differentiate these platonic friendships from the non-platonic.
Obscurity of relationship status can be used to do so – where characters are not explicitly “friends”, but are evidently tied to each other in some way, more than their assigned platonic status. Here, Kaveh and Alhaitham are irrevocably connected beyond their “roommate” status, and although they are not currently described as “friends”, they used to be, “best friends” according to Kaveh’s Character Stories, which creates a gap for interpretation.
The player is encouraged to interpret the reason for the two’s parting of ways, along with the reason for their current rapport. Although Kaveh asserts that there is a mutual “disdain” between the two, Kaveh observably talks about Alhaitham enough for Tighnari to assert: “No dinner with Kaveh is complete without a few words about Alhaitham." Rather than out of disdain, it can be surmised that Kaveh talks about Alhaitham due to the fact that he cares, as he states that the reason he has so many troubles regarding his work is because he cares so much about it.
When paralleled with his troubles with Alhaitham, being that Alhaitham finds a way to “infuriate” him every time they talk, it can be inferred that Kaveh’s approach to dealing with his work is the same as to how he deals with Alhaitham.
If Kaveh’s assertation that the “disdain” between the two of them was true, then there is no basis for him to talk about Alhaitham as much as he does. This is due to his attitude in caring about something results in him verbally expounding the problem, the same behaviour he exhibits when dealing with Alhaitham. By his own reasoning, if Kaveh did not care about Alhaitham, he would not be so “infuriate[d]” by his words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In turn, the player can see Alhaitham’s care of Kaveh manifest in his concern for Kaveh’s wellbeing within A Parade of Providence. In this sense, the rapport the two have currently which the narrative prompts the player to question can be explained. The two hold a mutual concern and care for the other, but due to elements in their past, they cannot address this, and thus it goes unspoken. The same can be said about the explicit status of their relationship, as no canon label applied to the two can truly explain their relationship, with ‘roommates’ being a clear oversimplification of their bond, and always followed up with the question of their friendship.
Alhaitham and Kaveh’s status as ‘friends’ is disrupted, not only due to the canon ending of their friendship in the past, but also in the current narrative of the game due to this refused label. Alhaitham and Kaveh do not adhere to the status of ‘friends’, either evading it (Alhaitham) or outright denying it (Kaveh), however, their bond remains central to each of their respective narratives, so much so that their differing viewpoints are integral to the other.
Alhaitham and Kaveh have been designed so that they are integral to each other, and the obscurity of their relationship acts as a signifier that their bond is not of a typical platonic friendship.
In Chinese gaming restrictions regulating platonic bonds and romantic bonds between same-sex characters as strictly ‘friendship’, Genshin Impact can be seen to subvert this in order to queercode. By creating an obscure bond between a same-sex relationship, a bond which the game constantly calls into question, a silence has been generated as to what the status of the relationship really is. The depth to Alhaitham and Kaveh’s relationship and the unspoken nature of it alludes to the queer taboo, in that its inability to be definitively labelled generates an otherness than that of an easily understood platonic bond.

the devil and the dead man
sawdust was a physician who made a dubious trade, scratch is a businessman who knows a good deal when he sees it.
both use he/him. sawdust sometimes goes by dusty. and ol' scratch has many names.
tl;dr: after sawdust's patients began dying en-masse from an unidentified illness and he starts seeing a bad omen everywhere he turns, he makes a deal with scratch (a combo black shuck/devil type figure) to save them in exchange for his life & servitude
its cool tho they get along really well now. sawdust is having a great time watching medicine progress into something that yknow. works.
Sawdust had tried a few lines of work before landing on medicine. Taxidermist, gravedigger, mortuary assistant. he'd never been squeamish, and they were all fine jobs. Always hiring. Paid the bills.
But medicine felt right. And he wasn't half bad at it, either. He was good with his hands, good with numbers and needles. He could blood-let, stitch up wounds, mix up powders and pills. Kept his saw sharp. His patients loved him for his bedside manner. For many years, he could boast about how few patients he'd lost.
And then that changed. Some horrible sickness swept through his town, and he was constantly busy, numbing pain and bandaging sores. He'd never seen anything like it. That was all he could do. He read every book he could find and wrote to every physician he knew, trying to find some treatment, some cure, but he found nothing. He grew less busy as the undertaker's business boomed.
After the first death, he started seeing it. A massive hound, black as night, watching him wherever he went. Its piercing eyes- orange-red and bright as flame- peering out from an alleyway, or between the trees, or loping along the footpath at night. It was everywhere.
Sawdust had never been a superstitious man, but given what was happening around him, it was hard to resist the thought that it was an omen.
His neighbors were dropping like flies and the black dog at his heels was driving him mad. His once-steady hands shook, unable even to make his coffee in the morning without a mess. He found himself taking long walks outside of town just to avoid his neighbors' pleas- he had run out of medication to dull their pain days ago, there was nothing left for him to offer. Sometimes those walks took him farther than he planned. It would be dark by the time he got home, and the hound would inevitably be lurking somewhere along his path, he felt its eyes even if he didn't see it. He started carrying a scalpel in his pocket.
On one of these walks, his mind teeming with barely-suppressed panic, he suddenly became starkly aware of his surroundings. He was nearly at the crossroads. Miles from town. He'd only been walking for half an hour or so, he thought, but he wasn't sure of anything any more. At least this area was pleasant. A soft breeze whispered through the wildflowers, the creek burbled gently.
Sawdust was not a superstitious man. He was a physician, a scientist. No space in his mind for folktales. But here, he had a thought. A vague memory of an old story. Something about deals made at crossroads and impossible wishes coming true. He almost laughed at himself, at the mere thought of giving in to superstition, but…
With a heavy sigh, he sat on the soft grass, his back to the post. Stared up at the sky for a long moment. And he made his request.
"That's a heavy ask, brother."
Sawdust jolted. A tall man leaned against the post above him, with long black hair and a long black coat. The stranger let a cloud of heady smoke pour from his mouth and turned to smile down at sawdust as he struggled to his feet.
"All those folks, all those souls… in exchange for you." He chuckled, narrowing his flame-orange eyes. "That'd be a hell of a deal on your end. What else ya got?"
Sawdust's hands shook harder than ever. He knew those eyes, he'd seen them a hundred times in the past week alone.
"I-I can work. Whatever you need. I'm a hard worker." he couldn't keep the tremor out of his voice.
The hound laughed again, rough and dark. "Now, there's an idea. Could use an assistant." He looked sawdust up and down, took another pull from his pipe. "Let's see… they got a few hundred years between 'em. That's a start."
He grinned- his teeth were far too sharp- and offered his hand. Sawdust shook the hound's hand and signed his afterlife away. A single pistol shot rang out through the valley.
The next morning, the townsfolk woke with their sores healed and their throats clear, healed by some miracle. A few gathered to go tell the town doctor the good news. They found an empty office, left as he had left it the previous morning. The mystery of the disappearing plague and the vanished doctor would morph into the stuff of folk tales, a local legend. A couple accounts nearly got it right.

OC-TOBER DAY FIVE- RELATIONSHIPS
THEODOSIA 'THEO' REYNOLDS
Once again speaking about Theo and once again not finishing this forgive me one day ill finish these all separate <3. I think three of the largest cornerstone relationships in Theos life are their sire, Sacha (top right), their kind of girlfriend/soulmate/something deeply disturbing Iris (bottom), and Stewart their childe (top left sort of lol). I think Theo is a character shaped almost entirely by the people they have been surrounded by- by their own choice or otherwise.

there's a similarity between the green knight and the banshees of inisherin that i realized after watching acolytes of horror's "the green knight: the uncanny horror of masculinity" for the second time recently. in the video he talks about how Essel asks Gawain "why is goodness not enough," and it reminded me of Colin Farrell's character Pádraic asking what's wrong with being nice when his very good friend Colm decides being nice is boring and he wants to be great.
critics have discussed how masculinity is defined in relation to the stories being told in these movies and acolytes of horror does a great job in breaking down how the green knight portrays masculinity and shows how Gawain's desperation for achieving honor as a display of his own achieved masculinity is the source of his troubles when he decided to cut off the head of the green knight. something could be said about Colm displaying his version of masculinity as well when he cuts off his own fingers as a demonstration of his commitment to performing his ideal version of masculinity. Whereas for Pádraic, masculinity meant being nice or at least, being happy with his simple but happy life.
i can't say that there's a reason for this post besides me sharing this connection that has been knocking around in my head for a while. i just thought it was interesting how two very different movies explore the same theme in similar ways: chasing after greatness aka the ideal masculinity through violence over the contentment of being a nice, good person, an arguably honorable and respected performance of masculinity.
