Thoughts on Mako/Iroh?

It's cute! Makroh is one of those ships that's lucky enough to have had a small but very talented and dedicated group of shippers creating content for it, and I admit they converted me long ago. Sadly a lot of them have since gone dormant or left the fandom. But the Makroh that's still out there is, by and large, super cute and oddly wholesome. Just two exhausted workaholic firebenders trying to grab a moment's peace with one another. They take better care of each other than they do of themselves, and I love that for them.

All that said, I rarely write Makroh myself. Here's the exception, a fic I did for Makroh week in 2021:

Mmm Mako x Iroh ii being problematic

I don't blame you for not catching this one yourself-- it's a little esoteric.

The fact of the matter is that Mako works for the police while Iroh works for the military. Cross-discipline realtionships are never a good idea, particularly if one or both of the people involved are high ranking. Any relationship between the two of them would STINK of corruption and intrigue-- better to leave that can of worms sealed.

Not to mention that it is technically a peasant x noble ship, and those are also fairly Problematic.

11. [Barry and Cisco] have just stumbled into a fairy ring, and they've forgotten they ever knew each other! What happens now?

My mind went right to that episode of s3 where Barry got amnesia and fell in love with Iris all over again. In a world with Barrisco endgame...he'd be falling for Cisco (all over again, ofc, because he had a crush on Cisco the whole time in this version of events). And since both of them lose their memories, Cisco would be gushing about Barry too.

But of course they'd both try to disguise it as "friendly banter," because neither of them wanna scare off the cute guy who seems to really like them (platonically, they think. Oh, these lovable idiots).

Caitlin and Iris realize that these two will get their memories back by kissing. And both of them know that Barry and Cisco have been crushing on each other for ages, and are still flirting now, but...how to convince them to go for it?

So shenanigans ensue, in which Caitlin and Iris try to set them up, except those plans go a bit awry. But also, in a way, those plans still succeed, because Barrisco fall more in love with each other until one day they go for it and kiss. And all is well!

(Except they "forgot" where the fairy circle was, so the following week, Caitlin and Iris get stuck there 😉)

8: common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

mako being a bad character or abusive!!!

But that is so obvious with me, so lets say Mako being a cop is bad. Look, I don't think it's the best storytelling decision in the world, but at the end of the day it's not that bad and people who say 'it doesn't make sense' are just lazy imo. Sometimes people who grow up poor and marginalised become police officers even if it doesn't 'make sense' in your head because that's how the world works, my god, the way people act like they have never heard of a non-white or working class police officer before (a lot of police officers are working class anyway lol). Mako has a sense of right and wrong and would be attracted to a job that offers both independence and also a stable job with a track record (anyone who argues he should have joined the white lotus misunderstands him imo). Also, it's just a storytelling decision, it's easy to write a fun conspiracy plotline around a law enforcement character which is what his plot in book 2 is. I don't know why we're specifically hating on one storytelling decision when cops are the main characters in a fucking tonne of media, I don't blame the writers for leaning on a popular trope to try and write a fun storyline. And once that plot point is up, Mako being a cop barely impacts his character until the comics apart from wanting to ditch Wu to go back to his job. It's not that big of a deal.

Would a version of legend of korra that actually examined police and state violence be more interesting? Sure. But I really think people are expecting far too much from the politics of a franchise that was aimed at children and mostly written and helmed by white middle class liberals, and that's clear from the politics of ATLA as well. Sometimes something fictional is not an endorsement of real world politics, and that doesn't mean that you can't critique or analyse it, but literally just saying 'mako wouldn't become a police officer because he's poor and was a criminal' and then refusing to actually engage with other parts of his character or the plotting of the story, just annoys me. Let's stop reducing fictional characters down to identity and leftist tumblr politics.

All this said for what is a badly written storyline in the show, but people don't want to engage with pacing or dialogue or setup and payoff, they just go 'it's bad because of it's politics?' and it's just bad media criticism. Analyse the politics, by all means, but only analysing that is so annnoyingggggggggggggg.

23: ship you've unwillingly come around to

uhhh like i didn't like Wuko much at first but i've come round to it for years now. Maybe Makroh because I'm an Iroh II hater but don't mind that ship lol but honestly I never cared that much about shipping. I have an interest or I don't.

I suppose I have come around to Makorra in that I like Mako and Korra enough to not hate them together. I'm still so lukewarm on that pairing but it is Mako content so you know I have read it.

Self Rec Sunday: Uncle Iroh's Firebending Academy

Welcome to my first Self Rec Sunday! To kick this project off I picked a fic that was short and which I absolutely love. Shockingly, while Asami and General Iroh are both characters here, it's not Irosami. "Uncle Iroh's Firebending Academy" is actually my first and only attempt at writing Makroh (Mako/Iroh II). I wrote it for Makroh Week 2021 as both a nod to the friendly bunch of Makroh shippers I'd come to know and just to see if I could do it. In this story, Mako and Iroh team up to build a school for the training of low-income and orphaned firebenders. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Two fun facts about this fic. First, Asami Sato wasn't supposed to be in it. But I found that when I wrote Mako walking in the door in the beginning, Asami was right behind him with her own cup of coffee like "Hi! Aren't you forgetting someone?" I've learned that Asami pretty much does what she wants and I adapted the fic to suit her demands she still be featured. I think the story is better for her being here. Asami is usually right.

Second, despite this being something of a one-off, it let me explore a few headcanons that I've now built into other fics. These include everything from Asami turning the Sato estate into a girls' school to General Iroh's ideal age group being four- to seven-year-olds to Mako being a rather decent artist. And of course, my thoughts on firebending training, and the challenges parents of firebender children face in raising them. For such a short piece, it added a lot to how I think of the Avatar world in the LOK era, and for that I'm grateful.
