what's ur fav frog?
it’s hard to pick just one so here are a few of my favorites!
Green and black poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus):
In addition to being really cool looking (there are other color morphs too but this one is my favorite), they’re the first known frog species to be able to create mental maps of their surroundings.
Wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus):
They can survive being completely frozen in the winter, with breathing and heartbeat stopping, and thaw out again in the spring — they basically produce a kind of antifreeze that keeps ice from entering their cells.
Mimic poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator):
Various morphs evolved to mimic other neighboring poison dart frog species.
Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii):
They have a pretty unique look, and the male frogs grow their tadpoles inside their vocal sac and then spit out baby froglets.
also the tomato frog (genus Dyscophus) and the Malagasy rainbow frog (Scaphiophryne gottlebei) — I don’t really know any cool facts about them but I just think they’re cute lol

Malagasy Rainbow Frog
The Malagasy rainbow frog (also known as known as the ornate hopper, the rainbow burrowing frog, the red rain frog or Gottlebe's narrow-mouthed frog) is a very attractive species that has become popular in the pet trade. As their name would suggest, the Malagasy rainbow frog is one of the most highly decorated of the Madagascan frogs. It is found in the rocky canyons of the Isalo Massif, occurring in the Isalo National Park. When conditions are wet, Malagasy rainbow frogs may be seen moving around on the ground. At other times these frogs burrow into the ground, or hide beneath rocks and in deep crevices. Although adapted for a burrowing lifestyle, this species is also capable of climbing vertical rock surfaces to escape flash floods.
Adapted for both burrowing and climbing lifestyles, the Malagasy rainbow frog has large shovel-shaped horny tubercles (wart-like swellings) on the underside of the hind feet to help with burrowing, and wide, adhesive discs on the fore feet for clinging to vertical canyon walls. The fingers have “claw-like” structures, which are actually a highly prehensile tip of each digit with horny skin that improves grip during climbing. Only the hind feet are webbed and the legs are relatively short, although this species is actually quite a poor swimmer.
It breeds in temporary pools and their tadpoles are thought to develop quickly (in 1-2 months) to avoid being washed away by sudden heavy rains.
The Malagasy rainbow frog is listed as Critically Endangered because its extent of occurrence is less than 100 km sq., all individuals are in a single location, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat around Isalo, and it is possibly subject to over-collecting for the pet trade leading to a decline in the number of mature individuals.

frog of the day :)
Scaphiophryne gottlebei, Common names: Malagasy rainbow frog, rainbow burrowing frog, ornate hopper, Gottlebe’s narrow mouthed frog
Habitat: Sandy areas with streams that are next to cliffs and rocks. They burrow underground in the day, and at night climb the rocks to hunt. (The fact that they can both burrow AND climb is considered really impressive, and is not too common in frogs!)
Found in: Madagascar
(this picture makes it look like he’s doing a peace sign)

today’s funky frog of the day is: scaphiophryne gottlebei! commonly known as the malagasy rainbow frog or rainbow burrowing frog, they are endemic to madagascar. they spend most of their time in small crevices or holes in rock walls, and they are very rarely seen outside their canyon habitat. although their bright, multicolored skin is what most people find unusual about these frogs, they are also adept in both burrowing and climbing, while most frogs can only do one, if either. they are often collected for pet trade, and due to this and habitat loss, they have become endangered.
