Malangan Head - Unknown Malagacak Artist, c. 19th-20th Century Wood, Height 79.5 cm ; 31 1/4 in
The black helmet sitting atop this Malangan head makes it possible to attribute it to the Malagacak sub-tradition within the Malangan rituals, originating in the Tabar Islands. "Given its size and the fact that it was not intended to be worn on the head, we can say without hesitation that this Malagacak is one of the powerful Malaganivis heads, which would become the leading symbol during the transfer of property of a Malangan group from one generation to the next" (Gunn and Peltier, Nouvelle-Irlande. Arts du Pacifique Sud, 2007, p.116).
A representation of the archetypal figure of the Malagacak warrior, this powerful head displays the iconic features of the Bismarck Archipelago's creation corpus. The majesty of the headdress highlights the forcefulness of the face with its tight features set off by the very fine carved and painted designs, it showcases the criteria of male beauty in New Ireland: broad nose, extremely elongated and pierced earlobes, and a large mouth with clearly delineated teeth. Added to this, the lavish polychromy and the preservation of the opercula figuring the eyes imbue this head with a striking presence. [x]
