Attempting To Film Lions at Eye Level

In this video I was attempting to film 2 Male Lions at eye level.

They were both chilling next to the road.

The first attempt was short as I was interrupted by other vehicles but the second attempt was much better.

It was quite tricky to film them because I used a selfie stick and my cellphone camera to achieve the shot.

This means I could not see what I was filming as the cellphone was attached to the selfie stick I held outside the vehicle at eye level near the ground.

The Lion on the left was restless and appeared ready to attack. He surely kept me on my guard as if he knew what I was attempting to do.

This Lion kept a watchful eye on me and he did not like the movement in the vehicle. Now and again I had to hide the camera contraption thus accidentally filming the inside of the car.

It did not seem if he was going to relax and allow me to film them.

In the meantime, other vehicles were waiting in the queue which made it even more difficult to film and time was running out quickly for this rare opportunity. Usually when you find Lions like these 2, they are much more alert and the risk is much higher.

When filming like I'm doing now, I could see what I'm filming but not when the camera contraption was hanging from the side of the car.

Eventually he flopped down and I could carry on - still not being able to see the screen or what I was capturing. All while the cellphone is still attached to the selfie stick.

The second Lion kept a very curious eye on me. Luckily his tummy was full and he only stared at this strange thing hanging from the vehicle.

Please use your own judgement when filming like this as one could easily be attacked or you might even lose your mobile phone.

Once I had the shot - although not perfect, I stopped the recording so I don't bother them any further.

An amazing photo of a coalition of four 🦁🦁🦁🦁 male Lions stalking the night.

At night a reflective coating on the back of the lions eye helps to reflect moonlight.

This makes a Lions eyesight between 6 - 7 times better than that of a human. They also have a white patch of fur below their eyes which helps to reflect even more light back into the eye.

For #Caturday I am pulling out one of my old photos of Izu at the @sdzSafariPark. Figured it was appropriate since lion around is pretty much all I have done for a couple of weeks (thanks to back issues). #AnimalFact Lions “snore” more than they roar. Tense Moments Following 5 Male Lions | Kruger Park Game Drives

In our latest sighting,  we followed the Lion coalition marking their territory. 

As these 5 male Lions(See Previous Video) started walking down the road, we and ALL the other cars, also followed them. Luckily, I was in a good spot to be near the front of the queue. 

It was quite a job to keep our spot in the queue as all the vehicles were jostling for a position while the males were on there patrol to scent mark their territory

. At one stage an OSV(Open Safari Vehicle) tried to sneak past me on my right hand side and tried to force me out of our prime position, but I was Not going to allow that, and I also know the game. :) 

If I knew the guide, I would have let him pass me because he had guests and it was only my brother and I in our Double Cab(I did not work that day). But the way he tried to force us off the road(not on camera) did not sit well with me - so we kept our speed and line, and blocked him out. He soon left afterwards. 

Please Note: The OSV visible in the video, did nothing wrong - he was quite a gentleman and knows the rules. 

I even let other vehicles pass me because they either had children with them or were Elderlies. At one stage, the Lions acted like domestic cats and started scratching a Red Bushwillow tree - using it as a scratching post. 

This is also a way of marking territory.

 We continued to follow them as they walked for several kilometers down the road and then all 5 of them started bonding next to the road, but I will add this in the next video.

Trevor found a leopard with a kill in a tree next to the Timbavati River. He spent some time photographing it but had to get back to Balule camp before closing time. He then went back to the tree the next morning to see if the leopard was still there - as he arrived at the tree a male lion jumped down with the leopard's kill in his mouth!
