Alina's powers would have rocked in a vampire setting.

Reluctant, no, Accidental vampire hunter. She tries to get more and more away from vampires but some idiot always shows up to then spontaneously burn to death. Word spreads among the vampires.

"She is killing our people! She can't keep getting away with it!! She will hunt us down one by one!!!"

Meanwhile Alina is just trying to take a nap without having to smell burning bodies.

Her idiot friend Mal doesn't notice any of this and goes out and becomes a vampire on purpose and there's this whole thing where she tries to get rid of her powers to be with him again but in the end he is the one who gives up his vampirehood/immortality for her for a happily ever after.

She then grows comfortable with her powers and uses them to blackmail the local vampires to give her a monthly payment in exchange for not showing up at their door lmao.

Sometimes she can also take payments from humans to kill some rather annoying vampires.

And what if one rather annoying vampire who is somehow resistant to her powers is Aleksander Morozova 👀.

He looked up, that stupid scornful smirk on his face. The earth shifted when she met his eye, and suddenly he looked scared. He caught her as the ground rushed up towards her. He still smirked, but there was a worried furrow in his brow.

“You know, if you wanted my attention, you didn’t have to faint in my arms,” he said.

i have so many silly kuzco/malina headcanons and many of them are based on AUs that are way different from what happens in the show. but one thing that i think is consistent across all universes is kuzco giving malina really over-the-top extravagant gifts and doing grand gestures for her that she really doesn't need and often pretends not to love. she rolls her eyes and tries to hide that she's smiling and blushing but on the inside she is happy to accept every massive wall of flowers and lavishly expensive piece of jewelry and badly-written love song from him. especially because they may seem ridiculous, but they're still genuine--with the flowers and jewelry he gets her favorite kinds and shows that he knows what she likes, and with the songs, he shows that he's thinking of her and is willing to put in that kind of effort for her. and once they're actually dating, she does let him know that she's grateful and that she loves him.

i saw your evgeniy post and i totally agree that it wouldnt work out the same at all if genya was male, maybe he would work directly for the king but either way im willing to bet the fandom wouldnt be victimising him to that extent and the character probably would be allowed to stay morally grey instead of being forced to be "good".

as per your comments too: they probably gave ivan a love interest for "representation points" but if the show character was played more accurately to the book and looked more like book ivan people would probably ship him with the darkling a lot more and talk about him having unrequited love or whatever which is fine but certainly cheapens the characters motives.

also i dont think alina would have got on with genya if she was in a red kefta from the start as its like she saw genya in livery as "on the same level as her" as a servant and outsider, its my firm belief that if genya was introduced to alina as corporalki to start with her prejudice would kick in and she wouldnt trust her at all as she seems more prejudice against corporalki than any of the other orders (aside from the darkling)

I don't think the King would require services of Tailor. The Queen remains the obvious choice for that, although there would be issues.

Regarding narrative-treatment... well, my guess is he wouldn't live long. Just look at Ivan- he wasn't easily brainwashed character, so he had to die to prop up brand new Good Guy™. Zhenya wouldn't be re-written into one-dimensional victim, because it would be easier to simply kill him off (preferably in a way emphasizing he picked the wrong side).

Fandom would simply ignore him, because he's a man in Aleksander's service. His backstory, missing sexual abuse "orchestrated" by the Darkling would also lose its appeal to antis. Loss of loved ones or torture just doesn't have the ring to it, when aimed at a man. Hell, if we'd make the King "fond" of teen boys, or came up with another molester, Evgeniy's story would include different variables. Women are easier to woobify, but then again, it could be "fixed" by making the boy gay, or better- headcanon gay. Everyone knows that makes you easier to exploit, so we can pretend lack of agency equals unfavourable circumstances etc. etc.

Since we know almost nothing about book!Ivan's personal life, I didn't mind his and Fedyor's romantic relationship, quite contrary- both actors used their minimal screentime to introduce the best romance in season 1 (in both, if I'm honest).

Ivan's in danger of simplification of his motivations no matter the looks. While book Ivan's described as good-looking, in show he's already canonically MLM. Both can work as a good enough reason to turn his loyalty into unrequired crush. Why delve into anything more complicated, if your view requires demonisation of the Darkling?

Absolutely agree on Genya's position and Alina's "friendship". Alina has been distrustful of other Grisha since the beginning. Sure, her belief she's a fraud played a part, but that would apply to Genya in red too. Grisha without colour didn't fit in. Useless Sun Summoner wouldn't either, once her incompetence becomes widely-known. Alina doesn't exactly believe in selfless unconditional friendship. Hell, she takes and takes from Genya, while offering little, with Malyen she assumes the opposite position.

He’d been curt throughout the morning, skipped luncheon, sequestered himself in the War Room until dinner and she’d had him in check in three moves in their regular evening shatranj match. Now, he stood at the window that overlooked the back gardens, though there wasn’t much to see on a moonless night except his own reflection.

“It’s nothing,” he said in a tone that was intended to be foreboding, forestalling any further question. She snorted and set down the book she’d been leafing through, unable to lose herself in it when he was so clearly bothered.

“Like Djel it is,” she said.

“Now you curse in Fjerdan?” he replied.

“If that’s what it takes to get you to talk. I’ll speak in tongues if I have to,” she said. “A trouble shared is a trouble halved, you know the old saying.”

“I created that saying,” he said. “They don’t all catch on, but that one did.”

“So, you believed it once,” she said. She waited. He could need that, a significant pause to demonstrate she would not leave, nor nag, patient when he challenged her, not goading him nor demeaning him for any expression of distress.

“I had a vision or a dream, I don’t know,” he said. “It doesn’t signify—"

“It upset you,” she said. “It matters.”

“We were together and apart, you wore a blue kefta,” he said, as if he were remembering it. As if he saw it again in the pane of glass before him. “Blue and not black. You were angry—”

He broke off, made some small gesture with his hand, though no shadows shifted in the room.

“Is that all there was?” she said.

“You and the boy,” he said.

“What boy?” She spent time with the younglings, but she had no favorite among them, and though she had hopes for the future, they had not spoken of children lately.

“The tracker, the one from your home,” Aleksander said.

“Mal?” she said, taken aback.

“Yes, him. You and he, there was a moment, I’d seen your face before like that, but not so far away,” he said, making the barest sense.

“A moment? You mean something happened between us, between Mal and me and that’s what upset you,” Alina said.

“You kissed him and he held you,” he said, as bleak as if it had happened. “You didn’t pull away—”

“Sashenka, it wasn’t real,” she said. “Whether it was a vision or a dream, a bloody nightmare, it wasn’t real. I didn’t kiss him and I wouldn’t. I mean, I suppose I might give him a peck on the cheek if I were saying goodbye but nothing more. I don’t feel that way about him—”

“You did,” he said. “There was truth in it, what I saw. A logic. Inescapable.”

“Well, now you’re positively talking nonsense. Who ever heard of love following logic?” she said. It was time to halve the trouble, to cut through it with a knife, a blade so sharp one blow would suffice.

“Milaya, you are being kind,” he said.

“You are being foolish,” she said. “I saw Mal as my best friend when we were children. I was infatuated with him when he joined the First Army, like so many girls are infatuated with a soldier. When he came to the Little Palace, I saw him for what he was to me, the brother of my childhood, a fellow survivor of the orphanage. Which was never home. It was only where we slept at night. What you saw has never happened, will never happen. Not every vision is a foretelling and not every dream is a memory recalled. Sometimes, we see what we’re afraid of and that’s all that it is, a fear that will never come true.”

“You don’t—you sound so sure,” he said and praise to Sankta Maradi, she could hear in his voice that he had listened to her. Believed her.

“Because I am,” she said. “Think about it—would Genya ever let me wear a blue kefta? She’s quite fierce about how little it suits me and how much finer the gold looks with my complexion.”

“Now you’re teasing me,” he said, but he walked back over to the bed and sat beside her.

“Maybe a little,” she said. “The blue is pretty, but it isn’t my color. And I feel a certain fondness for Mal, but that’s all. It’s nothing to how much I care for you and I’ll happily tell you that until you’re tired of hearing it.”

“Now you are being foolish,” he said, taking her hand in his and letting her feel the resonance of their power, the warmth of his palm against hers. “To think I could ever tire of that.”

AU where Alina was never sickly because she was always subconsciously summoning/glowing in a not-so-noticeable way and had a healthy, happy childhood with lots of friends.

More Vampire AU thought, this time on possible backstory.

I'm thinking established Malina seek out the mysterious Lord Aleksander Morozova a la Castlevania for. . . Some reason? General knowledge seeking? Maybe they're healers or something. Like a strange illness is sweeping through their village and they need a way to stop it.

Or maybe help in fighting a war more Dracula Untold sort of vibes? Maybe mutually pining Malina where Alina is the princess of a Shu Han vassal state that borders Ravka and Mal is her personal guard. War threatens and without an army, her people stand no chance of surviving so they decide to sell their souls to the devil. Only they get there and it turns out the devil is 1. Super Hot and 2. Very Reluctant to damn these brave beautiful souls for all eternity, even if it means he'd no longer be alone.

I think I like that better, Dracula Untold vibes it is!
