Weekly Press Briefing #61: August 20th - 26th

Welcome back to the Weekly Press Briefing, where we bring you highlights from The West Wing fandom each week, including new fics, ongoing challenges, and more! This was a huge week in TWW media. Before we get to the regular round-up, we’re going to start with a mini round up of all of the photos and videos from the August 22nd SAG-AFTRA picket line event:

Yeah people need to stop worrying about Mal and Alina cause they will be fine, of course there's gonna be alot of angst and their relantionship will go through highs and lows like in the books but at the end their relantionship will be stronger than ever.

AND i do believe they are gonna give the darkling an ARC but villains with good arc stories are the best villains, doesn't mean he's gonna be a saint by the end. Leigh would never let that happen tbh, so Malinas let's not worry :)

Yeah I completely agree. I honestly just think that the last few years with shitty screenwriters doing shitty things is what’s made us on edge. But Leigh’s never gonna let the story end with anything other than them. I keep remembering an old insta post Archie made of him and Jessie with ‘caption this’ and Leigh commented with ‘My caption is canon’ so like!! We’re gonna be fine.

And yes I agree! The Darkling and Mal are both going to seem a bit different in the show and I’m good with that - because their core qualities and personality is the same. It’s just the POV stepping outside of Alina means we can see other things they’re up to which are alluded to in the text but we don’t see because we can’t see anything Alina isn’t seeing. But they’re the same characters! Everything about them is the same, they can just have those qualities dialled up to 12 because we’ll be seeing them not through Alina’s insecurities etc. So yeah, the Darkling will have an arc we don’t see in the books, just like Mal will have an arc we don’t see in the books. We know those arcs happened, but we just didn’t see them. It’s exciting stuff imo!

I'm very sorry for what she's been through and I'm glad she's in a better place today but I'm also not gonna be guilt into not shipping Darklina based on this because a) there's no actual proof Darklina is based on her abusive relationship, it's an assumption based on an insta post b) Malina reminds me of MY past abusive relationship but I'm not here attacking Leigh for romanticizing it in her writing or their fans for shipping it, am I? c) I'm sorry but what her book was based on didn't seem to matter when she spent years baiting Darklina shippers into reading her shit so like, I'm sorry but those books were MARKETED towards Darklina shippers but a decade later you want to shame us for shipping it? Absolutely not. Not when I gave my hard earned money to read her horrendous writing and D) Everybody is free to interpret whichever story they are reading however they want, idc what Leigh or anyone else has to say about it.

First off, I’m sorry that happened to you. You’re not the person who I’ve spoken to who says that Alina’s relationship with Mal reminds them of a much more mundane, banal kind of abuse that lots of people go through in real life as opposed to the more heightened metaphor the Darkling represents.

Second:

Oh man lol, she’s not specific in that at all??? With or without the Darkling, her story is a story of a girl finding her way out of the dark. If that’s what people are reading into, they’re reading a LOOOOOT.

I do know there was a lot of baiting going on to market the books--I wasn’t a part of that, but I’ve seen promo materials. And I won’t see that was entirely on Leigh--the publishers knew what was up, and I think she’s smart enough to go along with what will sell books. I really have mixed feelings on that, because I do support Leigh getting her money.... But I wouldn’t get my money and then shame people. Which I PERSONALLY haven’t seen Leigh do, but I’ve seen a lot of people do that in the name of shaming Leigh.

I also don’t think I would feel okay with shaming people about shipping a ship I baited for $$$$ even if it came out of a legit dark place for me. But that is me. And I will add that I personally like Leigh’s writing--I think she’s a good writer. The original trilogy was rough as hell for but almost everything she’s written since (aside from Crooked Kingdom) was great for me. But that’s ME.

The reality is that Darklina has always been the more popular ship. So a lot of people from the other ship feel very defensive and want to try to get into weird moralistic shit to justify their preferences? When that has has never been what fiction is about? Like what you like in fiction. It’s important that you feel safe to explore what you want in fiction.
