thank you so much, you are a kind soul and i hope you are blessed in this life and the next. this has been one of the most difficult weeks of my life as of the last few years, which is really saying something considering all the shit that happened to me between 2020 and 2024. as stupid as it sounds, i delt with that shit largely by comforting myself with his content. now it feels all the happy memories are tainted by the reality of who he really was behind closed doors. i never thought i knew him, i never wished to know him, and i am thankful that i never did. apparently im very resilient to hardships according to others despite how desperatly i wish i wasn’t. i wish i could shatter and for once someone would help me. but despite all ive been through this seemingly small thing is what broke me. i relived one of the worst times of my life in the span of a few days. the realization that the happy facade i had built around my life was false, an attempted protection from the pain of reality. i feel i failed myself and shelby by trusting him. i was never under the assumption that i truly knew him nor did i want to, i very much valued that barrier but should have known better than to trust a man i never really knew. i felt kinship and inspiration from him in a similar way i did with my dad as a child. i looked up to him, i stupidly trusted him, and now i am paying the price for my foolishness.

i’ve found other comforts though, it’s what i’ve always needs to do to survive. i’ve lost myself in my work and my books and my fight to get sober. but thoughts of him plague me like the maloik. i don’t want to think of or remember him any more than i want to think of or remember the worst moments in my life. it’s stupid but it’s the truth, at least for now his betrayal hurts somewhat as badly as my fathers, just enough to break me and remind me that i can never truly trust anyone. we’re all strong, we’ll all move on, i wish you the very best in your own healing and know you are not alone the same way you have made me feel not so alone.

I think Amanda was an idiot for telling Sam and Colby to do that but the more i think of it, i wonder what made her parents try this method. Surely they tried others than just this and if its such a set in stone method, why didnt she think of doing it last time?

With that said, the Day of the dead just happebed and in my parents country the indigenous tribes have some beliefs to get rid of bad spirits. They love making kites over there and on the day of they bring kites these massive homemade kites to the cemetery and the belief is that the sound of paper hitting the wind scared bad spirits away from harming the souls of their deceased loves one. Something else they do is burn sugar in the cemetery and burn wood, again something with the sound and smell. Really interesting to see the different beliefs people have to get rid of bad entities.

if there was a demon in my house, idk what i would even think to do. that idea alone is too much like a horror movie for me lol

i know for italians, we believe in maloiks, or the evil eye. basically it's a curse that someone can place on you just from a bad look. i know one way to keep them away is basically to hang things around that ward them off, or distract them so to speak. like some will hang peppers in their car. i have a necklace that has an eye on it, and it's to protect me. if it falls off, some believe that that means it warded something off.

my mom believes in maloiks and she's not even italian so there's that.

but yeah, every culture and religion has so many different ways to keep darkness away. it's so cool to hear about it honestly.

it’s stupid that the very little italian my family members did teach me is not only mostly curse words but also gets me fuckin nowhere speaking to actual people in italy cause the few things i do know are all in this very specific southern dialect of the area we are from and no one outside that area can understand it. like it took me years to realize that most italians call the evil eye “malocchio” and not “maloik”

Over the Hedge (2006)

A racoon tricks a group of foraging animals into stealing from the human suburbs in order to pay back an angry bear.

 The humour is rather compelling in this film, for one thing there is some subtext included with it when the animals are viewing human society as it’s an opportunity to make social and environmental criticisms. There are also some amusing exaggerations and basic puns which pay off quite nicely. The animation is also of a particularly high standard for a relatively short feature.

 A lot of the film was taken up with montages, there must have been at least three that took nearly an entire music track which are amusing and effective but still take up time that could be spent with development. The plot was relatively simple and there weren’t any real twists or unexpected elements so it’s aimed at a pretty young audience. The ending also felt a little rushed.

 The characters were all amusing in their own ways and there weren’t any that got annoying which can happen in animated films. The voices all fitted well and most of the main cast were recognisable. Although there were a few obvious gags thrown in for necessity, most of the humour paid off and was reinforced by the animation.

 There were a couple of small parts which didn’t work great, like the zoon out gag which was used twice in the film and the fact that Verne keeps losing his shell even though tortoise shells are fused with their spines. The villains weren’t closely characterised but that’s partly due to it being from the perspective of animals. The threat of the humans is only really solved in the short term since their on a small island of nature and will have to risk their lives every time they want to eat forever.

 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-

 -When they name the hedge, Hammy calls it Steve because he thinks it’s a pretty name. The actor playing Hammy is called Steve.

-Tiger is a Persian cat and the actor voicing him is from Persian (Iranian) descent.

-When Ozzy does his playing dead acting scene, one of the porcupine children says “Props to the Ozzman” and they have their hands in maloiks (devil horn symbol from heavy metal fandom) which is a reference to Ozzy Osbourne.
