thought it was funny that when I first watched the show I was like "I want to see this bitch suffer" and then in the final episode when the bitch suffered I went "aww he's so sad" and I actually cried and couldn't stop thinking about it for two weeks
So here's the bitch suffering because I like seeing men be emotionally devastated
also .. wanna say that I'm really proud of my rendering in this one 😊

The Loss of a Friend
TW/CWs: animal death, angst, semi hurt/no comfort
It didn’t happen often, but this time Laswell was the one inviting them all to get drinks. Soap was weary from a long mission, and just got back at the base. Still, he tried not to think too much into it as he showered and dressed in his civvies.
The pub was tiny but not cramped. The tables where all next to each other, so Soap deduced she wasn’t calling them for bussiness.
They all met in the middle, on a table already served with beers. Laswell made them sit, on one side Gaz, him in the middle, and Ghost, on the other Price and Laswell.
“I’m really sorry for calling you here, as I know y’al just got back, but something came up.” She sighed. “Something informal, hence why I brought you here.”
Soap’s eyebrows shoot up. She wasn’t the type to beat around the bush, she always went straight to the point. It was one of the reasons why Ghost liked her so much, so why was she doing it now that there unofficial matters at hands?
“Just get on with it.” Ghost grumbled beside him.
Laswell and Price shared a look, and oh. Soap didn’t like that. He felt his lungs squeeze uncomfortably.
“We had an unexpected loss this morning,” Price started, and Soap felt a shiver coming down his spine. Gaz perked up too beside him, his mouth agape.
“What the fuck are you talking about? Nobody was KIA.” He said, his dark eyes open wide. “We would have known!”
“I checked myself.” Ghost growled, his body tensing up. He was their commanding officer beside Price. He knew. He needed to know, always, and if he didn’t, he always checked at least three times. Soap saw him do that multiple times, and saw him take their fallen comrades dog tags when something happened. He would have known.
“You are right. Nobody was killed during the mission.” Price continued, his hands coming up on the table. Then, he sighed. His shoulders sagged. “We lost one of our retired comrades. Explosion Detector Specialist K9 Delta 4-1,” he said, Soap’s heart skipping a beat. Ghost tensed. Gaz shook. “Or as we all knew her, Lady Riley.”
Laswell quickly jumped in, “She didn’t suffer. Had an heart attack and was gone in a matter of seconds, as a lot of old animals do.”
Soap was frozen in place.
Ghost snorted. “That’s one ugly joke you threw there, Laswell.” he laughed, but it was squeaky, hysterical. “I played fetch with her yesterday.”
Price looked away, his eyes starting to water. “I’m so sorry Simon.”
Soap was breathless. He thought about it many times, as all people with animals do, but he didn’t really think he would have lived to see it.
Delta 4-1 was one of their associated working dogs. He didn’t like dogs, but his heart made an exception with her. The first time he saw her, she was already on her older years, as she was nearing being six, but she was as powerful as her younger counterparts.
The whole task force was attached to her deeply, particularly Price and Ghost, and he couldn’t really understand why until she got injured on the field a couple of years later.
When she got out of surgery, Ghost didn’t leave her side. For days on end he would bring her food and water and lightly play with her through the open gates of the kennel she was recovering in. Price was always near too, always coming to visit her in the moments he could. When Soap went to visit, he played with her and stood confused by Ghost’s gentle touch on her coat. It was then that Price explained.
Price was the one to choose Lady Riley in the bunch of puppies that were available, as it was needed in their task force, and Ghost was her first handler since the moment she opened her eyes. Ghost followed all of her training, loosing a bet to Price, hence the name, and didn’t leave her side since. It didn’t matter if she worked for other people, they always give her back to him when they were both on base.
She was honorably discharged after her injury, as she needed her front leg to be amputed, and was kindly adopted by one of the nurses on base, who brought her back almost everyday.
“They are setting her up. We’ll hold the funeral tomorrow morning with all the honors she derserved.” Price spoke, his own eyes shiny with unshed tears and his own voice sheaky. “Even at almost thirteen, she was still the goodest girl.”
Soap felt Ghost shake beside him, and turned his eyes to look at the man, freezing again.
Ghost had one hand pressed strongly on his uncovered mouth, and his shoulders were shaking hard. He was quiet, but his tears where clear and streaking his eye grease on his cheeks. Soap’s own cheeks were wet, and he reached out bring Ghost close to him.
Soap pressed his face into the man’s light hair, his heart beating rapidly and air failing to circulate inside his lungs.
Ghost grabbed his sweater and pressed his face into his chest, soppressing the sobs starting to escape his mouth. Soap grabbed the back of his neck and kissed his head as he saw Gaz and Laswell holding Price right beside them. Price wasn’t crying, but Soap could see his throat bob from the distance. He was barely keeping it together too, and nobody could blame him for that.
There waited a long night ahead of them, and an even longer day afterwards, but Soap was ready to get through it. As much as he was undoubtedly sad about the news, he wasn’t nearly as much attached as Ghost and Price were, so if not for himself, he’d do it for them. For Ghost, who was a mess barely contained in his arms, and for Price, who lost another one of his loyal soldiers.
Notes:
I’m really sorry for this free angst. I don’t normally write, and this was totally uncalled for but, as it is kinda obvious, I just lost my dog. His name was George, he was a bicolor Cavalier King, I got him at three months old and he would have been ten years old in november. He was the goofiest, scruffiest, most annoying furball of this planet, but he stinked so much all the time cuz he loved dirt-baths, but he was the goodest, most loving boy of the world.
Just as Lady Riley, he died peacefully. We buried him with fragant leaves of the three he always laid under in my garden, and I laid there his little bone-shaped dog tag with his name on it and a young olive tree.
I’m severely mentally ill, and I’m struggling to find my voice and to feel my grief, so I wanted to dedicate him something I know I can do decently. He deserved the best of the best, and this is the only thing I can do to not only rememeber him myself, but carve his memory where everyone can reach it.

remembering the time I tried to explain what good omens was to my art teacher when I animated crowley for my final project and when I said "the Bible but make it gay fanfic between the serpent of eden and guardian of the apple tree", this man perked up and said he would watch it immediately. it was a chill class where everyone just kind of worked with their headphones on and this guy just sat at his desk watching good omens for the rest of class.
a week later it somehow came up in conversation that he had finished the show. when I asked him what he thought he just went quiet then said "... you didn't warn me and I cried an embarrassing amount."
yeah dude thats normal over here welcome to the cult.
edit: I forgot the best part! this was at a fairly conservative, small catholic school with at most 200 kids from preschool to eighth grade. and the fact that he got that excited at the mention of Bible fanfic in this catholic school makes me so happy to think of.

do you ever think when toji realized it was his son, he had a train of memory rushing down starting from when he held megumi for the first time in his hand and how he felt like a father and that if he couldn't be a good father, the least he can do is kill himself so that his son can live on and have a good life? no? just me? okay.
