11 and/or 21 for Rayllum please!
It's stupid, because Rayla has always been able to handle the cold. She'd climbed up a mountain without even a coat when they were kids, had survived (barely, but survived) shaking in the Shiver Glades looking for Viren with only Stella for warmth. Callum had seen right through her "I'm cold" farce under Umber Tor for a reason beyond the shakiness of their relationship, and—
She'd known it'd be cold up here in a place called the goddamn Frozen North. It shouldn't have been affecting her like it was. Callum had bore the brunt of Finnegrin's ice-blood spell too, after all, and he hadn't screamed and collapsed. He hadn't been helpless.
He was fine now, scarf pulled up over his mouth, and if Callum was fine, then she was fine.
She is fine, even if her heart beat fast, and her toes and whole legs feel frozen, and every step feels like it might be her last.
She just can't—or won't—let it show, as she and Callum trudge ahead, cloaks flapping like raven's wings over the snow, the bitter wind stinging their faces.
Finally, though, the snow parts long enough for them to spot a cluster of caves up ahead, and she's glad she's not the one to say it as he puffs out, "Shelter."
They stagger forward together, Rayla letting him go in first once he has a light in his hand and she's checked for tracks, just to make sure nothing's waiting for them on the inside. It doesn't take long to get a fire going, thanks to Callum's magic, and a heating spell now that they're sitting.
It doesn't do as much as she'd like, the chill settling into her bones. They may be out of the elements, thank the gods, but now they're sitting, sweat from trudging through the snow giving everything an extra damp chill. She lets Stella out of her coat to go right by the fire, and blows air into her hands when the warmth doesn't seem to want to stick.
"Are you cold?" Callum asks, nudging her knee with his, the gangly legs he grew into during her absence stretched out in front of him. Their shoulders touch.
"I'm alright," she answers, but it must not be convincing enough, as he takes off his cloak and drapes it over her shoulders before she can stop him. "Callum—"
"Sky and Ocean magic keeps me pretty toasty," he assures her, now just wearing his snow dusted scarf, his cheeks flushed and eyes warm and dark in the firelight. He smiles, truthful. "I'm fine."
She draws the cloak more securely around her shoulders and looks away, hoping her lingering shivering isn't noticeable. "Thank you. I—"
Then Callum lets out a very Callum-y, exasperated sigh, and loops an arm around her shoulders. Tugs her towards him into his warm chest. "Just hold onto me," he huffs quietly, his upturned lips brushing her brow.
Rayla hesitates, and then curls into him, some of the chill finally seeping away. The tension too, settling into the coziness they can have in this cave, just the two of them. She manages a tiny smile as she closes her eyes, his arms wrapped around her. "Thank you, Callum."

If you want an angstier prompt/don’t have too many others, how about Callum and Rayla comforting each other in the aftermath of their captivity aboard the Sea Legs?
Oh I am always up for some Finnegrin's Wake-related angst, thank you so much for the prompt!!
Rayla expected Callum to smile when she pulled back from their hug, to see the relief coursing through her body reflected on his face. Instead, his expression was… blank. It sent a jolt of confusion through her before her brain found the explanation.
Shock. Of course he was in shock, he’d been beaten— and he must have been terrified—
Rayla stood. “I’m going below to get some medical supplies. Finnegrin must have a stash of something that can fix up your face. Not that it needs fixing, it’s still quite handsome, it’s just… well, it looks like it hurts.”
She glanced at Callum, her face hot, but his still countenance didn’t crack. He just nodded.
“…Okay then. I’ll be back in a jiff.”
Rayla squeezed his hands and stood, making her way to the stairs that led belowdecks. She had just reached the first step when Callum’s voice stopped her.
“Below? Wait, no— Rayla!”
She shook her head, continuing down the stairs. “It’s really no trouble,” she called back. “I’m sure I can find something.”
“No— wait!”
It was the desperation in his voice that stopped her, a tone far more agonized than that of someone who just wanted to spare her an inconvenience. Did Finnegrin have more crew members down here she wasn’t aware of? Was Callum afraid she’d see what he used to torture him?
A hiss echoed down the dark hall, and Rayla tensed, grabbing her blades. She squinted in the darkness, trying to make out the source of the noise. Had Finnegrin tortured Callum with some kind of electric eel?
“Rayla,” Callum hissed. “Just— come back up here. Please.”
She shook her head. “I’m not afraid of whatever he’s keeping down here, Callum. Whatever it is, it’s never going to hurt you again.”
Another hiss drew her attention back to the hall. Two slithering figures emerged— were they really eels? No… snakes. Snakes with glowing green eyes.
Familiar eyes.
Rayla cut both their heads off in a single motion and turned to Callum, stumbling back when she realized he’d reached the bottom step. He looked from the bodies to Rayla and opened his mouth, and she tensed instinctively, trying to figure out how to respond to whatever he could possibly say.
But instead, he burst into tears.
Heaving, open-mouthed sobs wracked his entire body as he sank to the floor, crying in a way she hadn’t seen him cry since he had found out his stepfather was dead. The force of it reopened the cut on his lip, the tears coursing down his cheeks mixing with the blood and falling in pink drops to the floor.
“I— know— I— shouldn’t— have—" he gasped between sobs. “I knew the ocean arcanum, I understood that I— I shouldn’t try to control everything— but you were screaming, and screaming, and then you stopped— and I couldn’t— I couldn’t lose you— and that makes me as bad as them, as Claudia and Viren, I know it does, but I—"
Whatever he was going to say next was drowned out by a round of tears that left him no breath to talk.
Rayla expected to feel the insidious, bone-chilling horror she’d felt the last time she’d seen him do this: rip the life from a magical creature in order to give life to a set of chains. She expected the righteous fury of knowing he’d crossed a line he absolutely shouldn’t have. But none of it came. All she could feel was a heaviness settling over her shoulders, her chest, sinking her to the floor beside her mage with an overwhelming sadness— and gratitude.
I’d do anything for you, he’d told her, and he had proven it. This was a person who loved absolutely, who cared about her so profoundly he would carry a guilt this deep forever for her. And yet— the thought didn’t scare her. It wasn’t the same obsessive love that had consumed Claudia, and as she wrapped her arms around him, she desperately searched her mind for the words to make him believe that.
“Callum,” she murmured as she thought, “I just need you to breathe for me. Nice and slow. Can you do that?”
She felt his nod, and took a deep breath to demonstrate, setting a pointed rhythm until she felt Callum’s chest rise and fall to match it.
“Good. Now.” She let him go to place her hands on his shoulders. “How did Claudia react the first time she did dark magic? Do you remember?”
Callum furrowed his brow, clearly confused about why she was asking, but answered in a small voice. “Well, she was sick for a few days.”
“And then?”
“She was… giddy. I remember her dancing all through the halls of the castle, talking about it to anyone who would listen. She was so happy she could do magic, so proud.”
Rayla nodded. “I thought so. And Viren? Did he ever seem unhappy after doing magic?”
“Not that I can recall.”
Rayla squeezed his shoulders. “But you hate it. Yes, you did it, and it was bad— but there isn’t a single part of you that feels empowered by it. That’s what makes you different than them. All of you have done things for love that you regret— but you never once tried to justify it to me.”
Callum let out a long breath and nodded. His head slumped against his chest for a long moment before he raised it again, finally meeting her eyes.
“Can you forgive me?”
She let go of his shoulders to shove him lightly. “Well, let’s see. You just saved me and all our friends from an evil pirate. We’ve established that you regret using dark magic and never, ever want to use it if you can help it. Beyond that, you risked your life to find a spell to free my parents even though one of them killed your stepfather, you let me live in your castle for weeks, and you forgave me for being stupid enough to walk out of your life for two years.”
Callum managed a small smile, and Rayla cupped his chin in her hand, drawing his head close enough to rest her forehead on his.
“We’re good, Callum. You’re good. I promise.”
He let out a long exhale, leaning into her touch. “Okay,” he whispered, his voice stronger.
“That being said,” Rayla said, drawing back, “if you want to make it up to me, you can let me patch up your face.”
“I thought you said it was handsome.”
“And imagine how handsome it’ll be when it isn’t covered in blood.” She stood and offered him her hand.
Callum took it without hesitation, allowing her to pull him to his feet, and finally, he gave her a full smile.

“They are both equally important to each other and their development but Rayla is the one who gets the insults…”
What’s even more annoying about this is not only does Rayla get ridiculed for something Callum also does, that particular set of fans will also straight up deny that Rayla is Callum’s priority. “Oh, he would’ve found a way to connect to the Ocean with or without her as motivation. There were other factors in him deciding to do dark magic again.”
No. It was about Rayla, and pretty much only Rayla.
Tumblr media
THIS
What kind of bs is "there were other factors" like my guy!! are you watching the show with a blindfold on? sure, he probably wanted all of them to get out of the boat but Rayla was the trigger
A thing I have also seen in fandoms is people trying to invalidate male characters' feelings for a girl, for whatever reason I don't understand. I will always find incredibly beautiful a male character treating a female character as an equal, not as the fairer sex or stuff like that, as an equal who he loves, and we see this with Callum, he has never ever treated Rayla as lesser than him, she's his priority alongside Ezran and that's super beautiful. I will always have a soft spots for guys being the most lovable and protective people towards their girls you know? not because they are girls but because they know they deseve love, so seeing people totally invalidate that feels so wrong to me.
S5 and S2 parallel each other, in S2 we saw Callum connect to an arcanum because he did ark magic for Rayla, sure he also did it for himself to feel useful but it was mostly to save Rayla, season 5 shows it even more clear. We only see Rayla and Callum wanting to scape when they see the other in danger, the reason Finnegrin even wants to throw Rayla to the leviathan is because Callum punched him because he was hurting Rayla, and he was hurting Rayla because he tried to beat his ass for hurting Callum.
We can see Callum letting himself get beaten and still refusing to do dark magic and give the spell to kill Domina away, it's only when Finnegru says he will feed Rayla to the fishes we see Callum BREAK. He tells him the spell right away. He could have invented a different spell but he was too desesperate to save Rayla he told him the whole truth. He could have done dark magic any other moment but it's after this moment when he does, and then he goes straight up to save Rayla, then just as in season 2, he figures out the arcanum after doing dark magic for her, but this time also thanks to the poem A LOVE POEM who he recited before in ep 1 TO RAYLA. The proof is all there like seriously, he can figure out the arcanum because he loves her, it is as clear as day.
He tells her "I would do anything for you" which it's directly shown in this whole episode. Callum is terrified of doing dark magic, not only because it breaks his morals but because he's scared it could make Rayla dislike him and because it would be an step further for Aaravos to possess him, (tho I'm not sure if he fully knows dark magic is what allows Aaravos to possess him at all, maybe he suspects it) we can see how people like Claudia who do way too much dark magic lose a bit of themselves, Callum is probably afraid of that as well and yet he still does because Rayla is more important to him than whatever the consecuences might be.
There are people out there who believe he wouldn't risk the world for her and stuff but c'mon, this guy would risk the entire universe, he is extremely loyal and proctective, his love for the ones closest to him make him twist his morals because he treasures them more than anything (Rayla and Ez that's it). Rayla has been shown as his achilles heel and we will see even more this plays out. I can't believe there are people who can't see it, everyone has their own way to interpret media sure but somes things are just SO clear, like imagine looking at Zym and going "I don't think he is a dragon, he could be a rat", no.
In a summary, I want people to cut slack on those two, mostly Rayla. It would be cool to treat her like an actual good written character and not trying to invalidate her or her relationship with Callum. The show characterizes them and their relationship so well, they are such complex people and I can't believe we have to deal with those kind of comments.

#3 for Rayllum please!
Prompt: "They're gone, it's okay."
Pairing: Rayla/Callum (Rayllum)
Tw: Minor blood
~
The air feels still, and the sun beams through the leaves as Rayla keeps Callum's arm around her shoulder. "We got to get a move on." Callum groans softly. "Where..?" "We're at a part of the forest in Katolis still." Rayla frowns when she feels the sticky substance on the back of his head. "That's not good." Rayla settles him down.
"Just relax, Callum. I need you to stay here." Callum watches through lidded eyes as his Moonshadow Elf rushes off. She disappears in the trees, and a pang in his chest slowly grows as every second passes. What were they running from again? Corruption... right. Corrupted banthers. They had to run, and Callum, like an idiot, hit his head against a damn rock when the banther shoved him in the chaos, and a burst of pain had shocked him.
"Rayla..?"
Not a sound.
What if...
What if she got hurt?
She'll die.
Oh...
She'll die.
S H E W I L L D I E
N O
Callum forces himself up. He has to find her. Now. "RAYLA!?" He can hear her name ringing in his pounding head after he shouts.
Just like the Great Bookery.
Does she know?
Does she know all of what he has to say?
All the things he wants to show her?
Every moment he wants to be by her?
Even the bad parts.
Even his mistakes and regrets.
"RAYLA!"
A blur rushes to him, and panic holds a tight grip until he notices the white locks. "Callum? Why are you shouting? Lie back down, you fool!" Rayla gently presses her hand on his chest and lies him back down. "You have a concussion. Your head must be pounding." "It is."
Rayla's other hand goes to his head. "You're bleeding a bit."
"The banthers... did they hurt you? You ran, are you okay?"
"They're gone, it's okay."
A breath he didn't know he was holding escapes him. "You promise?" "Yeah, I promise." Rayla brushes his hair back slightly. "I ran because I was collecting some berries and all. It's good for you to eat and keep your energy up, I can't have you sleeping."
That makes sense.
"Right, um, right. Sorry, I got worried." Callum tugs his scarf slightly as he averts his gaze away. "It's okay. Now come on, let me patch you up."

Do you know what your job will be on the dolphin research team?
Great question! I'll be doing a lot of things on the team. Right now my schedule consists of dolphin health assessments, prey species and habitat surveys, and population monitoring for the local pod.
Most of the day will be spent on a boat so I'm really looking forward to it!

Callum 🤝 Stoick
“For you, my dear, anything.”
Everyone loves to draw comparisons between Callum and Hiccup (when they’re pretty fundamentally different people beyond the obvious surface level similarities) but sleep on this comparison! Love it
Gonna go on a deep dive cause Hiccup is one of my favourite characters ever but I've never written meta about him so
In some ways, Hiccup and Callum are similar - especially in terms of how they present. They're both goofy, more than a little awkward, deeply curious and compassionate, extremely loyal once you've earned/have their loyalty, a bit flighty and sometimes focused too much on the big picture in lieu of missing the little things. They both grew up feeling like the wrong fit for their environment/culture and it takes bonding with a mysterious, dangerous enemy and subsequent life changing adventure for them to start figuring out where they belong (and how). I think they'd get along splendidly and would absolutely show off flying tricks
However, they are also radically different, mostly because Hiccup is far more rebellious (and particularly in early HTTYD1) far more selfish than Callum is.
Due to a vicious cycle of "I want to prove myself to the village" -> "I mess up" -> "Village is annoyed by me" and a lack of other tangible options of places and circumstances to go into, Hiccup is about as bullheaded as it gets. Even before he meets Toothless, he's not super concerned about being a Viking according to his people's standards, and we don't know if he actually tried at being a traditional Viking very hard before he switched to machinery and inventing (I've also leaned towards not, but that's up for interpretation). He simply wants them to recognize that he can be a Viking, too, by his own standards - and in some ways better and more effectively than they can because he's using his smarts and not just his ('nonexistent') brawn. He's effectively beholden to no one but himself, especially since his relationship with his father is so strained and Gobber does his best, but is understandably not a perfect substitute / cannot be everything a 15 year old boy needs or wants to have socially. This is also why Stoic's scoldings are so ineffective, because pre-Toothless Hiccup doesn't really care that much if he royally mucks things up for the Village time and time again if it's in pursuit of praise/recognition - which is not entirely unreasonable (we all want attention/positive reinforcement) particularly for a teenager, but it is short sighted and immature.
Then he meets Toothless, and learns 1) how to put something and someone else heavily above his own wants & needs, and 2) how to contribute to the village in a way that would be beneficial for everyone, not just the people (beginning of the movie)/himself, or for the dragons/himself (when he was planning to run away), but for all of them, irregardless of himself. This journey is ultimately what's culminated in the third movie by finally living up to his father ("How do you become someone that great, that brave, that selfless?") by willing to do with Toothless what Stoic was willing to do with him: to let him go, so that he'd be Safe. The first thing Hiccup ever did, that set him on an entirely new path after all, was to set a dragon free. I always thought it was very fitting that was his final act as well.
And it's this journey from selfish slightly sarcastic but intelligent, sympathetically immature teenager to a wiser, selfless, less independent but more reliable adult, aided by the events of the films, the memory/inspiration of his father, everything about Toothless and his love/support of Hiccup, and Astrid being about as devoted to Berk as it gets (which is absolutely something Hiccup needs) that allows him to be a great Chief. He's able to put the greater good of his family and people above what he may personally want in the short term ("I was so busy thinking about the world that I wanted, I didn't think about what you needed") to prioritize his goals in the long term ("And we'll guard the secret until the time comes that dragons can return in peace").
And due to all of this, Callum starts out in a fundamentally different place, because he always has an internal and externally imposed responsibility from the start: Ezran. "Take care of your brother," are Harrow's final, parting words to him, after all, and we see Callum take this with him throughout the series, whether it's trying to be assassinated in Ezran's place, promising to return and help him once Zym is brought home, or rushing to defend him when he thinks there's another plot against the king. This is also where we see Callum's selective loyalty creep in. While Callum would make a great general due to his tactician skills and ability to think ahead, he is ultimately too reckless and obsessive to make a good king - or in the Hiccup comparison, Chief. Although both are leadership roles, having Ezran / others there to temper him occasionally as a general is crucial - he needs that safety net (or someone to tell him to keep his eyes on the road) which him being the final authority on the throne would not provide ("I may be queen but even I can't stop those two when they've set their minds on something") that not being on the throne can marginally provide. This is also one of the reasons why I don't think either Callum or Rayla are really suited to a long term life at court / as royalty, but post for another day <3
Callum also has more of a temper and more of a nasty temper toward his loved ones as well that Hiccup really doesn't have a shred of - he'll be sarcastic and a bit snippy but he'll never aim for the jugular, y'know? (Hiccup is also more marginally prone to self blame probably because he's grown up enough to take full responsibility for his actions after a childhood of mostly shirking/dismissing them, but like side tangent)
So like Callum's consistent sense of responsibility keeps him tempered and more mild mannered and less rebellious (and him and Harrow have a much better relationship than pre-HTTYD1 Hiccup and Stoick, which absolutely helps; each may have resembled each other more in HTTYD2 esque dynamic if Harrow had lived to see Callum mature / grow into himself a bit more) but also leaves him far more selectively loyal / focused on his own bubble most of the time.
Like Hiccup is just loyal enough (aided by Astrid) to his People to like be able to do the ins and outs and enjoy it overall? And I've never gotten the same sense from Callum at any point in the series (which "I'm beholden to my inner circle, not some silly kingdom" - thank you TOX). And I do think the way Callum would want to change the world is more magic based - teaching other people how to connect and harness magic - is more in line for him overall but again: post for another day (and we'll have to see where canon goes). Because of Toothless, Hiccup's bubble expands to Astrid and the gang and his father, fully, and stays expanded; Toothless gave him the family & support he needed to no longer need Toothless to stay in the same manner. For Callum, his bubble is Ezran, expands to Rayla as well over the course of arc 1 at first because of Ezran and because of their own bond - and it doesn't really expand with the same intensity to basically anyone else (see Callum being worried, sure, about Soren in 4x06/4x07 but also a lot more focused in general in how Soren's absence is affecting Rayla and thereby focusing on reassuring her)
Callum is also just way more of a loose canon, at least to me. Trying out the lightning spell just because in 1x05 with no safety net, staying way too long at the Great Bookery in 5x04 when they absolutely could've just come back after stopping Aaravos and co., and again: he just has an edge to him that Hiccup doesn't? It's hard to describe and I don't think there's necessarily a reason behind besides "they're two different characters with accordingly different characterizations" but I can't see Hiccup doing dark magic or being tempted by it - even if it was to save Toothless, or something? He's just too much of a bleeding heart/animal lover and a lot more Ezran on that level
Long characterization aside, I actually think Rayla and Hiccup are probably more similar in that rebellious / witty streak to your disappointed more restrictive tougher mentor (Runaan, Stoick) but that Callum 100% has Stoick's devotion to Valka down pat. "For you my dear, anything," the slow approach in asking but not assuming she'll be his wife again, the forgiveness and understanding of Valka and Rayla staying away all that time, the "I don't want another. Your mother was the only woman for me. She was the love of my life" excuse me while I go cry.

Congrats on 300 followers, Ray!!! For a request, how about something extra fluffy…
Callum meeting Rayla’s parents (and Runaan, of course) and accidentally lets slip that he wants to marry her
Mando this is perfect thank you so much, I've been itching to write some rayllum since season 5 dropped but haven't had any idea which direction to take. I hope you like it!!
When Rayla poked her head out of the makeshift tent, she looked almost as terrified as Callum was. Maybe it should have made him feel better to know that he wasn’t alone, but instead, his nerves skyrocketed, his heart doubling its already-too-fast pace in his chest.
He should have gone somewhere else, anywhere else in the makeshift camp they’d set up after the battle at the Starscraper. But he hadn’t been able to shake the idea that Rayla might need him. The last time she’d seen Runaan, after all, he’d threatened to kill her. But this was pointless, wasn’t it? None of the people in Rayla’s tent had so much as raised their voices, and Callum’s pacing had probably interrupted their reunion, and he’d made a bad impression without them even needing to see him—
“Do you want to meet them?” Rayla asked.
Callum blinked. It took a second for the words to sink in through his panic, and even then, he opened his mouth and closed it several times before he could find his voice. “Sure?”
Rayla gave him a small, nervous smile and extended her hand. Callum reached out to take it, then hesitated.
“Are you… are you sure?”
Rayla smacked his arm. “They know everything already, dummy.”
“Oh!” Just when he thought he couldn’t get any more terrified. “Okay.”
He slipped his hand into Rayla’s, gripping it tightly, and she pulled him through the opening.
All three of her parents were armed. That did not seem like a good sign.
Runaan’s arms were folded, a steely glare on his face. Lain and Tiadrin were a little more relaxed, standing with their arms around each other’s waists, but their faces were devoid of any discernible emotion. Callum swallowed hard.
To his shock, it was Runaan who broke the silence. The older man’s glare deepened into something sadder, and he bowed his head.
“I know you must have mixed feelings about seeing me again, after… what transpired since we last met. I thought I knew the weight of your stepfather’s life, that I had factored the place he held in the hearts of those who loved him against the harm he dealt my people and found the scales tipped against him. But I have committed actions just as cruel against you, and you still chose to spare me. I’m grateful for that— and more importantly, I’m grateful that you kept Rayla safe when I could— when I would not.”
Callum swallowed again, this time holding back grief instead of fear. He had made his peace with Rayla loving Runaan— but peace with what happened to his dad was a long way off.
More than anything, he wished it didn’t have to be this way. That meeting the three people who meant so much to the girl he loved wouldn’t have to be tainted by so much loss.
“We’re all grateful,” Tiadrin said, her cool expression breaking into an understanding smile. Lain gave him a similar look.
Their warmth thawed Callum enough to find the right words. “You raised an incredible daughter. Being with her has been the most incredible privilege of my life.”
“A mage and a poet. You picked a good one, moonberry,” Lain said, winking at Rayla. She ducked her head, but not enough to hide her smile.
“You’re under no obligation, of course, but I can assure you you’ll always be welcome in the Silvergrove,” Tiadrin added to Callum.
A grimace chased Rayla’s grin away. “Actually… he won’t. Neither of us will. I’m a ghost.” She turned to Runaan. “They banished me for botching our mission.”
“But you saved the dragon prince!” Runaan bellowed, outrage pouring from every word. It raised Callum’s opinion of him, just slightly.
“And that won’t bring Ram, Skor, Callisto, and Andromeda back to life,” Rayla replied quietly.
The names cast a silence over the tent. Callum looked down, giving the others a moment to mourn, letting them break it on their own terms.
“But where will you go?” Tiadrin asked.
Callum raised his head. “She can come back to Katolis with me.”
Lain raised an eyebrow. “A lone elf in a human castle?”
“She won’t be alone. I would stay with her for the rest of my life— and so she’ll have a home there for the rest of her life, too.”
A split second later, he realized what he said, and fought the urge to clamp his hands over his mouth.
He meant it. Of course he did. He’d faced enough with Rayla to understand how deeply he loved her— and he’d faced enough without her to understand how much it ached to be away from her. But there was a difference between knowing she was the only person he wanted to spend his life with and admitting that to her parents within five minutes of introducing himself.
He risked a glance at them to find that Tiadrin’s smile had only widened, and he allowed himself a single, relieved exhale.
“Then let’s talk about that,” she said, waving him over to her corner of the tent. Taking her hint, Lain and Runaan motioned Rayla over to the other end.
Callum glanced at Rayla, tense, only to find her beaming, her eyes shining with tears. She raised their entwined hands and kissed the back of his before letting him go, lightly pushing him over to where her mother stood waiting.
“I’m sorry,” Callum blurted, before she could even get a word out, directing the words more to the wall of the tent than to her. “I never meant to imply that I wanted to— to take Rayla away from you, or make any decisions for her. I know I shouldn’t have said that, but—"
“I’m glad you did.”
Callum finally met her eyes.
“A prince who ran away with an assassin. A human who can do primal magic. A dragonguard who never once abandoned his post.”
Tiadrin’s beaming face blurred as Callum found his own eyes brimming with tears. He blinked rapidly, trying to dispel them, and only succeeded in pushing them onto his cheeks. Tiadrin gently reached out, wiping them away, and placed her hands on his shoulders.
“I can think of no one better to entrust with my daughter’s future than you.”
She let go of his shoulders and reached up, removing one of the silver bands that encircled her horns. “Ethari made this for Lain when he told him he wanted to ask me to marry him. I got this—" she tapped the matching silver band on her other horn— “on my wedding day. I suppose I could have taken the old one off then, but I’ve been too attached to it. But I’m ready to let it go.” Carefully, she placed the band in Callum’s hands.
“You’re so young, Callum. Take some time to be with Rayla now, to understand who you are in peace. If you decide, at the end of that, to give this back to me, I won’t judge you.”
She stepped back and gave him a wink. “But if you decide you want to pass it on to a new owner… well, I have a hunch that she’ll be ready.”

Since I've been feeling particularly generous lately, here's a snippet of another upcoming fic based on this headcanon by @mandaloriandragontrainer
As the sun cast its golden hues across the sky, illuminating the balcony with its warm glow, Callum stood there, his gaze fixed on the horizon, lost in thought. Rayla approached him, her footsteps silent. She wrapped her arm around his, feeling the strength in his grip as he held her hand.
“Morning, love,” she whispered, her voice soft and tender, a familiar greeting that echoed through the countless mornings they had shared together.
Callum turned to her, his eyes reflecting the colors of dawn as he pressed a gentle kiss to her hair. “Morning,” he replied, his voice carrying a weight she couldn't quite place.
“Enjoying the sunrise?” Rayla asked, her tone light, though a hint of concern lingered beneath the surface.
For a moment, there was silence, broken only by the distant sounds of birds greeting the new day. Callum's gaze remained fixed on the horizon, his expression pensive. Then, with a quiet intensity, he spoke, his words barely above a whisper.
“It's my last,” he confessed, his voice tinged with a mixture of resignation and acceptance.
Rayla's heart skipped a beat, her grip tightening on his arm as she searched his face for any sign of reassurance. “What do you mean?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly, her mind racing with a thousand questions and fears.
He turned to her, a gentle smile gracing his lips, his eyes reflecting a mixture of sadness and acceptance. “It's almost time, Ray,” he murmured softly.
Rayla's heart clenched in denial. “No,” she protested, her voice trembling with emotion, “don't go,” she pleaded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
But Callum's smile remained tender, almost serene, as he reached out to caress her cheek, wiping away her tears with a gentle touch. “I have to, love,” he whispered, his voice steady yet filled with love, “but I'll still be with you, always.” His reassurance offered her a flicker of comfort, but the weight of impending loss hung heavily in the air.
Rayla's lip trembled, her voice faltering as she struggled to find the right words. “Callum...” she choked out, her heart breaking with the impending farewell.
