The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All • by agu_knzm
Mitsuki and Aya are classmates that have never really spoken to each other…until Aya walks into the music store Mitsuki works at and develops a crush on her! At first, Aya thinks Mitsuki is a boy and eventually learns that she’s actually her quiet classmate. They bond over their love of music and their relationship begins to grow.
I would jump in front of a train for these two. They are so adorable. The author publishes the story’s panels (four panels per post) on their official Twitter and usually, there’s an English translation out within the same day.
The art direction is so unique because of all the green highlights, I personally love it! I’m hoping we get an official English print. 💚

So elated Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru/My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999/山田くんとLv999の恋をする is out, aired to the public in Spring of this year, 2023, through Madhouse studios, one of my favourites for a series.
Tumblr media
I watched a few episodes before I decided to wait till it was mostly/totally released so I could sit and watch it in one stint. Yesterday I gave in hahaha.
I am most pleased. It’s the first anime released about a manga I’ve read since I returned to immersing myself into manga just over a year ago once again. I usually read a lot of not super popular mangas which never see the screens unfortunately despite being beautiful stories in the rough. As I thought, I’m very much enjoying it so far.
If you’re into anime, you’ve probably seen a fair few memes of Yamada already during the one scene he turns away from the computer. The most amusing one to me, was this one, as I’m also a big gamer of Genshin this was a funny joke between me and my partner.
Tumblr media
I still can’t get over the scenario where he just starts totally choking on cup ramen in the manga, and I hope that doesn’t get forgetting. Because yeah, very relatable. Introvert gamer eating and choking on noodles, disaster. How he’s like socially I understand, I like the character, Akane is always very kinda despite some ways she gets treat and I think that’s quite brave but I wish she would stand up for herself more! The time with the fan incident was so sad, and such a real thing to be wary about even though she was set up. I cannot everr forgive that lil’ wet wipe Runa for doing that to her. She totally got my goat when that happened, idc. Her excuse is she’s younger and lonely and immature but.. that doesn’t cut it for me, there’s no excuse to do that but I’m glad she felt guilty and apologised as y’know, I thought she definitely never would when reading the manga.
Eita is so camp I love him, and when he goes angry face at Runa, we know shiz gonna go down as he’s usually like ^-^^^.
Let’s just say, Takezou, is, just, adorable. I’m very glad there’s representation for the older gaming community which very much exists, not only for the fact many avid gamers from when games started releasing still very much have been around this whole time since those days and have a lot of experience! Even if you can’t do big tournaments as easy the older you get, a lot of older gamers get ignored or forgetting and it’s associated with only being a young people thing.
Synopsis
After her boyfriend breaks up with her for another girl, college student Akane Kinoshita wrestles with a broken heart and the memories he left behind. Loading up Forest of Savior, the MMO they used to play together, she forms a plan to get back at her ex-boyfriend through an in-person event for the game. In the process, she runs into someone unexpected: Akito Yamada, a gaming legend who just happens to be her guildmate.
Desperate for support, Akane ropes the asocial Yamada into helping with her scheme and lending her a shoulder to cry on. The differences between Akane and Yamada soon become apparent as they spend time together, yet they cannot help but notice each other's inner qualities. As the two gain more experience with one another in and out of the game, their tentative acquaintance may level up in a way neither expects.

With the recent boom of interest around dracula, i highly recommend reading one of my favorite retellings of the book: DRCL: Midnight Children by Shin'ichi Sakamoto (creator of Innocent and Innocent Rouge)
Tumblr media
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Coming-of-Age
Status: Ongoing
Content Warnings: Racism, Homophobia, Misogyny, typical Victorian England things in a private all-boys school
Instead of Jonathan Harker, it follows Wilhemina "Mina" Murray in Whitby School, a prestigious all-boys school. She's constantly bullied and looked down upon even if she's proven that she earned her spot on the school (Also she's a very good wrestler).
Tumblr media
Other familiar characters such as Lucy Westenra, Arthur Holmwood, Quincey Morris, John Seward, and Bram Stoker also appear, albeit a bit different from the original.
Tumblr media
Sakamoto has changed a few things such as Quincey becoming an African-American student and John becoming Jo Sewa, who is now Japanese. Another change is Lucy is now Luke "Lucy" Westenra, though it's not currently clear if Luke/Lucy is genderfluid or a trans woman. Jonathan Harker is also changed as Mina's disabled childhood friend.
Tumblr media
(And of course, they're all teenagers in an all-boys school)
Tumblr media
Midnight Children is a completely different novel as a result of the modifications, yet it does follow most of Dracula's major plot points. Sakamoto's writing is excellent, and he creates a bleak, claustrophobia atmosphere right away, thanks to his realistic, nightmarish artwork.
Without giving too much away about the plot, I'll just mention Shin-ichi Sakamoto's art, which is rendered in an intimate, dream-like realism in every panel. Because all of the characters treat the unsettling, mystical forces surrounding them as normal, it does give a massive whiplash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
minor tangent: i like that the author doesn't go the tokenism route, which is such a low standard, but Sakamoto knows how to write queer characters. his writing in the Innocent series is enough to prove that. just a low standard but there's few stories that write their queer characters of color with respect, especially one based on Victorian England.
I recommend reading the one-shot first, then the manga. while it does spoil you a bit, the one-shot is a great mood-setter for the rest of the manga which is an amazing slow-burn.

love me for who I am is also another great trans focused manga I binged last night and it really does a complete bait and switch. the premise involves a bunch of amab people working at a self-styled otokonoko cafe and it looks like a cutesy fetishy bl type thing but it actually has one of the most diverse LGBT casts I've ever read in any piece of media. The mc is an amab nonbinary character that is refreshingly open and honest about being neither a man nor a woman, and refuses to compromise on how they refer to themselves throughout the story, staying true to themselves. Other characters include a GNC gay cis man, a GNC cis man who is explicitly attracted to women, several adult trans women, a trans girl who previously used the otokonoko descriptor before coming out, a closeted lesbian, and a cis male love interest who is absolutely a breath of fresh air in how he supports the MC's identity and come to terms with not only being queer himself but also being a better ally to the trans people in his life. All these characters identities are relevant and explored in the plot, and the story is a good mix of cutesy part time job slice of life events and extremely heartwarming and hard-hitting plot about finding acceptance and navigating relationships while being true to yourself. it feels a bit silly giving out recommendations when I don't have many followers, but if you're feeling alone or afraid or hopeless this pride, please give love me for who I am a chance.

A recommendation of Undead Unluck
I'll be completely frank with you. By binge reading all of the manga I have come to the conclusion that it is my fourth favorite manga. Yet, for all the good will I hold for it, I can't earnestly recommend the first few chapters to anyone. Not because of its weird premise or that its just my trash taste that has made me love it. No.
The starting chapters are just very problematic with just this weird sexual undertone between the two main characters, the titular Undead Unluck. It makes it just extremely hard to get into if you don't know what it becomes. It may start out as such but in a very short time-span it metamorphosis into something completely different and completely different. This change is comparable to a persons complete personality shifting from something that just feels off at a lot of times to something I can say wholeheartedly is beautiful. Which is what makes the initial chapters so sad in contrast with the rest of the story. It is what keeps this series from getting a 10/10 for me.
With this I conclude my initial disclaimer.
And if you have read so far,
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY RECOMMEND IT THE REST OF IT.
While its beginning is definitely problematic it really drops those undertones quick which lets the story keep chugging along. I would however completely recommending skipping the problematic beginning. While it has a lot of vital info I do feel like you can read ahead since it still changes massively enough to the point where it isn't really needed and you can simply understand whats going on from starting at that point. The chapter I suggest you start at is chapter 9.
I can also give a summary if you wish. It is in the following paragraph
So basically in this world that can negate a specific concept. This ability is based around their interpretation of said negated concept. This gives it a specific condition for activation. The simplest way to explain this is an ability that is based around the characters interpretation of it that is molded by their experiences with it. The current user of the ability Unluck is Fuuko. As implied the ability lets her give people bad luck. This is activated when people come into contact with her. This leads her to accidentally killing her parents. This leads to her becoming a NEET who's scared of touching literally anyone. This leads her to try to commit suicide by jumping onto an oncoming train from above a bridge. That's when Andy, the user of Undead comes in. As implied by the name he literally can't die and can regenerate from anything. Think Wolverine but able to use the fact that he ca practically regenerate as a weapon in of itself. He tries to die with her unluck. He escapes because of his regenerative abilities. Then there are a few shenanigans before he cuts her hair as he was once a barber. However there touching moment is interrupted when a seemingly evil organization called UNION attacks. They are able to of course beat them back. Andy explains that they've been chasing them for a long time and even trapped and experimented on him 50 years ago. Of course he broke out and he has been pursued ever since. Then they are once again found by Union. 2 of its top brass are sent after them. They kill one of the guys while the other guy, Shen says that he can recommend them in. They only need two empty seats to fill. By killing the other guy they've successfully emptied one and just need to kill another member. He gives them the place where they can find said member. So they go and kill her too.
This is an extreme over simplification of what happens and I'd say at a certain point you should probably come back to read these chapters as they are somewhat re-contextualized later on. You likely will know when to read them but if you want a hint there are two major turns in the middle portion. Probably go back when the second turn happens.
Now with the summary and disclaimer out of the way I think I may start of with the main appeal of the story.
For one I love how it develops the main duo as you often don't see much romance in shounen. And usually it is a side-plot. And while I've never been a fan of romance myself I do thing with the exception of the first few chapters, Undead Unluck handles that aspect of it pretty exceptionally. I feel like Fuuko and Andy gain more chemistry as the story goes on. It in my opinion happens very naturally and is shown to be mutually beneficial. While they certainly can operate individually and be effective, by working together their power is bolstered and they are more effective.
Beyond just this main pairing love is a recurring theme within the cast. So even if you don't like the main characters there are always other pairings for you to ship.
Beyond just this its just really fun from start to finish. It has a really nice adventure aspect where it can feel monster of the week at times. And even then the plot is able to progress. This helps make even less consequential arcs feel engaging as its always going somewhere.
I also really like how specific arcs can pay attention and really help develop the specific characters that become the focus in them. It really helps make the cast feel more well rounded and likeable. I think this aspect of the manga really shines in the sixth arc as it in my opinion gracefully shifts focus to a completely new character and fleshes them out to a great extent. I also like how with each re-appearance we learn more and more about the villains and their motivations.
If there was anything I didn't particularly like about Undead Unluck I'd have to say that its fast pace is a double edged sword as I wished some arcs took some more time to develop the characters as they are all just so interesting. But the plot is always progressing so it feels like no time is lost.
In all, I think its a series worth reading.

Normal middle school girl enjoys normal middle school things… Until a boy she used to know transfers to her school.
[After School Lessons for Unripe Apples]
[Romance, coming of age]
Mi-Ae is your typical middle schooler, albeit a little shorter than most. She likes comics, idols and hanging out with her friends. Her main concerns are the pressures of exams and her struggles with studying. What happens when a boy she used to know as a kid transfers into her school with a new look, one that towers over the vast majority of their peers?
Cheol’s intimidating appearance isn’t the height of her struggles, as Mi-Ae soon comes to find that her childhood acquaintance rejects every attempt she makes at getting to know him.
How many shenanigans will she have to pull to get him to crack? And what becomes of their relationship when he finally does?

Personal Notes:
This manhwa is honestly my favourite Webtoon at the moment. Definitely a slow burn but absolutely worth it. The way friendship blossoms between them before either party even realises it is just so great. And of course, as a romance Manhwa, it’s safe to say that their friendship ripens into something more.
This Manhwa is great in so many ways. First of all, the female lead fits perfectly for a coming of age story because she’s nothing like most female leads in romances, beautiful, elegant, skilled or even that intelligent. Mi-Ae is exactly what you’d expect from a goofy middle schooler.
The male lead on the other hand is serious, outwardly mature and treats her like a kid. He’s considered intimidating by pretty much everybody else in the class and is referred to as ‘Lucifer’ by his peers. Don’t be fooled, they’re the same age and honestly, sometimes Cheol is more childish than her. Personally I think it just adds to his charm.

My top 3 90's shojo manga reccomendations (I'll try to keep them spoiler free as possible)
Tumblr media
1.Basara by Yumi Tamura (27 volumes)
Synopsis from Viz: Basara is a post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure series and one of the most popular shôjo manga of the 90s in Japan. It is the story of how a young girl becomes "the child of destiny" and finds the strength to free her people and seek revenge for the death of her brother.
Basara is a story that can't be classified into just one genre. It's a romance of course, but it could fit also fit into other genres such as fantasy or adventure, as well as tragedy. There's bloody battles throughout the manga, as well as political corruption and even pirate fights! It might sound like a shonen manga but we also get romance, forbidden romance at that. Think Romeo and Juliet. We get to see star crossed lovers fight for what they think is right all the while not knowing each others identities. Everyone in the series is fleshed out, with motivations, wants and needs. By the time you reach the end of the series, even the smallest characters will have you feeling for them.
The only criticism I can give is the art at the beginning of the series is subpar, but the quality of it picks up quickly and by the end of the series the author's art is undeniably gorgeous. My all time favorite shojo manga and whether you can hunt down all the out of print series like me (it took forever) or read the scans online, I think almost anyone would be drawn in to this series.
Tumblr media
Red River by Chie Shinohara (28 volumes)
Synopsis from Viz: Yuri, a pretty Japanese girl, is ecstatic after passing her college entrance exam and having her first kiss with her childhood friend-turned boyfriend. However, her luck soon changes. She starts to notice that water becomes agitated whenever she goes near it. One night, hands appear out of a puddle on the street and drag her into the water! Transported to an ancient village in the Middle East, she is then captured by armed troops and taken to the Queen's palace for a human sacrifice. Adventure and good-looking boys fill this great first volume!
I've always been fascinated by Ancient Egypt so this manga was right up my ally. It has beautiful art, an intriguing story, and unique side characters. I also didn't hate the fact that the author dropped details and facts about history into the manga.
Overall it's an amazing historal manga, with just enough action as there is romance. I would encourage anyone who enjoys history to check out this title (most likely through online scans as it is out of print).
Tumblr media
Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki (20 volumes)
Synopsis from Viz: Why is Setsuna so mixed up? Despite his attempts to be noble, he'll fight anyone anytime; he ignores all authority; and he harbors feelings for his sister that can only be described as "incestuous." Why is he such a mess? The reason may be found with two demons from the underworld and their enemy, an insane angel who is distributing an insidious computer game called Angel Sanctuary.
Angel Sanctuary is about a female angel who rebelled against God, and in turn had her soul separated from her body, and sent to earth to endure tragic human lives until the end of time. The female angel currently inhabits the body of a teenage boy who is troubled by the love he has for his sister. Like Flowers in the Attic, incest is a common theme throughout it, however, it is never fetishized nor glamorized, and we don't see that much of the physical side of it (just go with it and it will all make sense in the end). The sinful love isn't the only focus, as there are also demons, sword battles, even angels with guns, as well as plenty of interesting side characters that add to the story.
I will say that the first few volumes are slightly mediocre, but Kaori Yuki quickly picks up in the later volumes, and by the time I finished the series, I could say it was one of the best ones I've ever read. I've never read a 20 volume manga series as fast as I have this one.
I wouldn't recommend Angel Sanctuary to everyone, since it has a warped view on religion, as well as incest, drugs, murder and genocide. But all in all, it's a excellent series for those with an open mind who enjoy beautifully drawn series with a complicated plot.

The One Within the Villainess
Author(s): Makiburo , Shiraume Nazuna
Synopsis: Remilia- the villainess of an otome game- has been peacefully watching Emi- a young girl from Japan who reincarnated into Remilia’s body. However, after having her engagement annulled and being publicly shamed, Remilia returns to clear Emi’s name and seek revenge!
My Thoughts: Remilia is the kind of vengeful aroace goddess that I can only wish to be. The relationship between these two girls, who have never met, is fantastically heart warming. And, like the D4 ASpec that I am, I am thirsty for some good friendship content. Remilia also girl bosses into the sun. Her business prowess is top notch and (SPOILER ALERT!) she literally fights a god (No more spoilers). She is very overpowered, but only cares about using her powers for Emi’s sake. The business talk does get a little boring at times, but honestly,I just skip it and fill in the blanks.
Side note, I think Remilia gives solid C3.
My Rating: 9.8/10
