Twinstar Cyclone Runaway
Tumblr media
I'd like to put this yuri novel series/manga adaptation on people's radar because I think it might appeal to people who like to explore the tension between societal expectations for a relationship and what people actually find fulfilling. The novels, written by multiple Seiun Award winner Issui Ogawa, are currently at three volumes and counting. A manga adaptation by Ahiru Tanaka got underway in July and currently has two chapters out, both of which have been scanlated into English.
The story is set around a gas giant planet named Fat Beach Ball, a resource-starved gas giant planet. The economy revolves around Besshu (or gloomfish), fish-like creatures which inhabit the skies of the planet. These fish contain a versatile material used for everything from food to rocket fuel to building material, and are hauled in by enforced husband-wife fishing teams. Terra Intercontinental Endeavor is a 24 year old woman who has inherited her parents' fishing business, and who is struggling to find a husband in part due to her own indifference to who she fishes with, and in part due to the incompatibility of her workflow/imagination with the men she's set up on marriage interviews with.
Tumblr media
She has a 'love at first sight' moment with a woman who introduces herself as "Diode" and who immediately requests a marriage interview in spite of the rules against woman-woman fishing pairs.
Tumblr media
Diode (whose name is short for DIE-over-dose) turns out to be an excellent pilot, and her skills end up being an excellent match for Terra's unconventional approaches to fishing. It turns out that Diode is also an 18-year old runaway who is an out lesbian, and is trying to find a way to escape marriage herself.
Without going into too much detail about the novels (mostly because my knowledge of them is secondhand), the story follows Terra and Diode's attempts to remain independent within the omnipresent heteronormative and patriarchal culture at Fat Beach Ball and the ups and downs of their budding romance. If fishing is your thing, there's also a lot about the different techniques to be used as well. If you need an endorsement too, Iori Miyazawa (Otherside Picnic) has been pretty enthusiastic about it on Twitter, and after the most recent volume of his work, I figure he knows what's up in terms of sf-flavored yuri.
Give it a try, and if you like it, recommend it to your friends! It would be great to see this work hit the critical mass needed to make the novels more accessible to fandoms outside of Japan.

Recent Read Manga Recommendation Round Up (plus anime!) - Part 3
Manga/anime I’ve been enjoying recently! Links to part 1 and part 2.
Twitter link to this post here.
~Links to my other manga posts~ My personal favs/ones I super enjoyed will have a ✨ on them :)
Tumblr media
PLEASE LOOK UP ANY TRIGGER WARNINGS!
CRIME, ACTION, DRAMA
✨GANGSTA. by Kohske
(8 volumes + chapters released past vol.8, hiatus)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Please check out my dedicated post I linked for this series. I worked super hard on it!
If you take one recommendation from this list, let it be GANGSTA. I’m begging… This series is going in my all-time favs. I have a whole “Why You Should Check GANGSTA. Out” section in my dedicated post, so definitely take a look at that! But in short: Do you enjoy great character writing? A diverse, adult cast featuring different races and disability rep (deaf MC)? A gritty setting? A FOUND FAMILY OF DORKS?
I'm obsessed and I'm making it my mission to take as many of you down with me as possible...
TIME TRAVEL, SUPERNATURAL
Link Click directed by Li Haoling
(24 Episodes - Season 2 Coming Soon)
Tumblr media
Link Click is a donghua from Studio LAN and streamed on Bilibili — the Chinese streaming service that I do some subs for, if you're unfamiliar with them — as well as Funimation. I enjoyed the art, animation, and atmosphere. The premise is that two guys working at a print shop time travel through photos to help their clients. And who doesn't love a trio of kids with a big-hearted jokester, the quiet, mature one, and a feisty girl who reins them in? I think this is my first donghua and I enjoyed it!
Plus, the opening and ending themes are pretty slick ->

MECH, POLITICAL, SCHOOL
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury by Yatate Hajime
(12 Episodes + Prologue - Season 2 currently airing)
Tumblr media
Let me tell you about me and Gundam.
I used to work at a translation company in Tokyo where I translated some Gundam figure commercials/interviews (which are currently privated on Youtube, unfortunately) amongst other things. I'm telling you guys, every time I walked into the office and saw an email from Bandai/TAMASHII NATIONS with a new Gundam translation request in my inbox, I would cry a lot little inside. I had never watched anything Gundam and didn't know what the heck was going on in the stuff I had to translate. There was this one interview with a figure designer where I was like, "Oh, you have to be a Gundam fan to understand what the heck he's talking about..." I remember me, another translator, and our editor staring at our screens exasperated. We managed, though. Big shoutout to the Gundam Wiki — not that I understood anything from it LOL.
If you told me back then that I would enjoy a Gundam thing, I would've laughed — but here I am, enjoying a Gundam thing. I'm not into mechs, even though I think robots/robot-adjacent stuff + space are cool. Still, I could never get into mechs for some reason. So if you're like me, try The Witch from Mercury. Our MCs are these two girls who end up engaged to each other in a rather hilarious way imo, with a colorful cast of supporting characters. The political themes I hear Gundam is known for really hooked me, and I LOVE how the kids handle a situation they end up in. I won't say more so as not to spoil it, but I think this is a great entry point for Gundam newbies!
youtube
Season 1 Opening Theme - Am I turning into a Gundam fan? Wild. Who would've thought the day would come? What if I start getting into Gunpla? A slippery slope, really.
SLICE OF LIFE, SCHOOL
✨Skip and Loafer by Takamatsu Misaki
(8 volumes, ongoing) + Season 1 Anime
Available in English
Tumblr media
I remember seeing volume one of this series at the bookstore I frequented in Ikebukuro Station when it had just come out. Sooooo many times, I almost picked it up over the years. But I always passed because I was swamped with work, school, and current reads.
Now, I have a little more time on my hands, and the new anime adaptation has so much love put into it! A great coming-of-age story following young Mitsumi as she moves to the big city for school. This series is so wholesome, it's cavity-inducing.
youtube
This opening is the most delightful thing~
SLICE OF LIFE
Hotel Metsäpeuraan e Youkoso by Fukuta Seira
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only
Tumblr media
In the mountains of Finland is a hotel run by two men. One day they see a young man outside in a snowstorm, and bring him inside. The men can tell that teenager Jun seems to have a heavy past and offer him a job and place to stay at the hotel.
Super cute, wholesome, and has great found family vibes!
SLICE OF LIFE, FOOD
Samenai Machi no Kisaten by Hasha
(2 volumes, complete)
JP only
Tumblr media
A chill read with a touch of melancholy. At the end of each chapter is a recipe! The art is very cute and pleasing.
DYSTOPIAN, SCI-FI
✨Fool Night by Yasuda Kasumi
(6 volumes, ongoing)
JP only
Tumblr media
In the future, the sky is blacked out, not allowing any sun through. To survive, technology has been developed to turn people into plants. I'm in love with the art and atmosphere of this series. I can't wait to read more!
ROMANCE
Gakusou by Tsurimaki Nodoka
(oneshot)
JP only
Tumblr media
This is a super short one-chapter oneshot. Cute little read with lovely art! By the same author as 聖血の海獣/Seiketsu no Kemono, a 3-volume manga I've been meaning to read.
LGBTQ+, DRAMA, COMEDY
To Strip The Flesh by Tooda Oto
(oneshot/anthology)
Available in English
Tumblr media
An anthology that has some funny stories, and some that made me feel too seen...
DYSTOPIAN, SCI-FI, CRIME, ACTION, POLITICAL
✨PSYCHO-PASS by Urobuchi Gen
Check anilist for all content because the seasons, movies, manga, light novels, and watch order are a little all over the place.
The Psycho-Pass: Inspector Shinya Kogami manga is available in English from publisher Dark Horse.
Tumblr media
Set in the future, Japan has implemented a surveillance state that measures people's psyche and flags anyone with the potential to do crime, even if they have not done anything or will never have done anything.
I watched season one back when it first came out in 2012. Since then, I would see ads for new content at the train stations in Japan and thought I’d catch up. There’s a new movie, PSYCHO-PASS PROVIDENCE, releasing May 12, 2023.
I've been having a lot of dumb, edgy fun with this series and its on-the-nose political themes. It's kinda camp-y? I do wish it spent more time on character moments, though.
I love me a trio (which seems to be a theme in this round-up lol) and this series has a good trio! Akane is such a great character, and Shinya and MY BOY GINOZA NOBUCHIKA!!! have been thoroughly entertaining me.
Tumblr media
I love him. I wanna bully him and stuff him into a locker...

A review of “Pluto”
Tumblr media
Pluto is a japanese seinen manga of the science fiction/mystery genre written and illustrated in 2003 by Naoki Urasawa, creator of works such as “Monster” and “20th Century Boys.” In 2023, a netflix adaption was released which was animated by Studio M2
A basic synopsis
Now, Pluto is actually a retelling of an arc from the famous astro boy (also known as tetsuwan atom) manga written in 1951 by Osamu Tezuka. Urasawa uses and transforms “The Greatest Robot On Earth” arc into a darker and more mature version of it’s original story. Set in a futuristic version of our world where humans live amongst sentient robots ,we follow a detective (also a robot) named Gesicht who is assigned to a case regarding the murders of the seven greatest robots in the world by an unknown perpetrator.
My thoughts
The first point I wish to make is how disappointed in myself I am for not watching this show sooner. I feel a genuine shame about it. I can’t find anything bad to say about it at all. The plot, the characters, the lessons, the animation, and even the personal impact it had on me and my life were just out of this world. This is not just some typical show about robots fighting, there’s a lesson to be learnt and tons of beauty within it’s messages. In my opinion it’s one of the best shows on netflix.
Althought it starts as a typical murder mystery story (this is not a criticism of mine) “Pluto” evolves and brings a new perspective on the concept of AI, making the robots very advanced in terms of their emotions. They hold the ability to love, they can have hobbies, and passion, and at the same time they can feel sorrow hatred to the point they are basically human, such an antagonistic supercomputer which has an almost primitive craving for power and control as well as displaying signs of narcissitic tendecies.
The plot becomes a commentary on the effects of war, as well as various ethics about topics such as revenge and forgiveness. It is very rare that a show makes me emotional however pluto succeeds at doing so. Every single character holds such an important purpose to it’s messages such as how we can become more than what society thinks of us as well as the beauty of love and even the natural world too.
The animation is incredibly gorgeous, and is remniscient of urosawa’s iconic artstyle too. The use and switching of colour tones really hammers the messages home for me, especially when there is a brighter sort for imagery of nature, overall tying the series together.

I’m hoping this can get some traction, but I work at a book store and our manga section has been decimated by us having to send book back to the publishers lately and I’m looking to beef it up. If you read manga, please comment or send me a message or a DM with some suggestions of series that you loved or are interested in so that I can look into ordering them. Thank you so much! Reblogs are greatly appreciated to get this to as many people as possible!

Can you recommend any cool romance related manga?
Sseeing how this is a yandere blog, I will give you some of my suggestions on that end. Most of these can be found online.
Killer in Love (completed): although I was not that satisfied with the ending, this is one of my favourites. It is quite dark, psychological, and tragic with some excellent introspective panels.
Happy Sugar Life (completed): I would give the same the description as above, only add a mutual tender love and generally more cute scenes.
Love of Kill (ongoing): it is similar to Spy x Family with spies and rival organisations. It's not particularly yandere, but there is a decent amount of violence.
Ennead (ongoing): this BL manhua/webcomic is based off of Ancient Egyptian mythology, so note that I am heavily biased towards my preexisting interests. It is very mature so discretion is heavily advised.
I made a number of manga caps from Ojou to Banken-Kun, Assassin x Cinderella, and Chotto Kiken na Amaama Onii-san, but that is primarily because I like to use the art and less because of the plot and characters.
I hope this helped some- my tastes in manga are generally not romance.

One of the most wholesome (if not the MOST wholesome) and cutest family-focused manga I've ever read! 🥰
SO thankful my volume four came yesterday because I plan to dive into it today as this josei always makes my heart feel lighter! (Which is exactly what I need after a stressful day yesterday!)
HIGHLY recommend if you need something super fluffy to read! 🥹

First Impression: Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!
Tumblr media
Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! is about Melphiera Marchalrayd, the daughter of an Earl. In order to avoid being shipped off to a cloister by her family, she must find herself a husband within a year. The only problem? She has become infamous within high society for her love of eating monster meat, earning her the nickname of "The Voracious Villainess"! But when she is saved by Aristide Rogier du Galbraith, "The Blood-Mad Duke", from a monster at the kingdom’s annual matchmaking banquet, has Melphiera finally found someone who would be able to accept this so-called villainess and her unique tastes?
While reading Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! I definitely thought that Melphiera was like the female-equivalent of Laois from Dungeon Meshi with their shared affinities for consuming monsters.
That aside, I thought Melphiera and the Duke were such an “adorkable” pair. Despite both of them having such “monstrous” monikers see what I did there?, they are just two awkward folks who like to indulge in their hobbies. I initially came for the monster eating, but I think I’ll be staying for the romance (and monster eating of course).
Based on the ending of volume one, it seems there is a deeper reason for Melphiera’s enjoyment of monster meat and I’m curious as to what it is. However, it looks like I’ll have to put this series on the back burner for the time being as the English translation is slow in catching up to the current material. But don’t let that deter you from giving this series a try!
Thank you for taking the time to read this review! I hope you will check out Alice in Mangaland for more manga reviews in the future! Arigato gozaimasu! Thank you!
