Hong Kong Broken But Still Got To Work
Tumblr media
It was the strongest typhoon in history according to the Hong Kong Observatory. Winds reached 250 kilometres per hour. A vast stretch of the MTR from Tai Po Market to Sheung Shui was shut down. The Light Rapid Transit in Yuen Long was shut down. Both bus systems were shut down. Security Secretary John Lee reported 1,500 trees were down and over 600 roads blocked with debris.
Tumblr media
When Hong Kongers woke up this morning all Typhoon and Rain warnings were gone. People had to go to work, but most shouldn’t have.
It would have been better if most stayed home. It would have allowed the 8,000 workers from the Food and Environment Hygiene Department to clean and clear sidewalks. It would have reduced the number of cars and buses on the road to give the Transportation Department time to clear the streets. Lastly, it would have been better for the MTR to devote all of its resources to clearing off the tracks instead of having to manage the swarms of people trying to get to work.
Tumblr media
In the desperate need to get to work some got gouged. Spotted around Sheung Shui, was a mini-bus operator charging HKD 100 (12.75US) per person for a ride to Kowloon Tong. The trip usually costs HKD 10 (1.27 USD). Some taxis were charging four times the rate. All understandable in typhoon and post-typhoon situations but most of the people who need to go to work are the people who can’t afford these fairs and do not get reimbursed by their company.
Ronny Tong Ka-wah, who is a member of the Executive Council for the Hong Kong government, said it was impractical to expect the government to give the people the day off of work. “In a capitalist society, the government has no power to meddle with all the contracts between employers and employees,” he said (http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/transport/article/2164461/hong-kong-faces-traffic-chaos-mtr-and-bus-routes-after)
He is wrong. According to the Emergency Regulation Ordinance (Cap. 241), the Chief Executive has a lot of power to manage emergencies such as declaring the suspension of work and markets. Her choice was to put markets and money before the safety of the people and ensuring Hong Kong could fully recover from the typhoon.
The typhoon is gone, and it will take a week for Hong Kong to get back to normal. Tomorrow will be easier as more rail and busses come back online however we need to learn from this. There need to step if there is another typhoon like this and with the changing climate the chances are high, sadly.

(October 2011). Duddell Street is my absolute favorite spot in Hong Kong. It boasts a magnificent flight of granite steps meticulously constructed between 1875 and 1889. These steps gracefully ascend toward Ice House Street, creating a stunning visual spectacle for pedestrians. It was in this area that I stumbled upon a store and purchased a watch out of my measly paycheck as a UP instructor more than three decades ago. Sitting many times on Duddell’s grand staircase, I found solace and inspiration to write some poems, too.
What truly sets Duddell Street apart is its iconic gas-powered street lamps. While the rest of Hong Kong has embraced electric lighting, these four lamps stand proudly, still utilizing town gas. Managed by The Hong Kong and China Gas Company, these lamps are relics from a bygone era.
However, tragedy struck on 16 September 2018. Typhoon Mangkhut ravaged Duddell Street, causing three of the four lamps to be destroyed. Yet, with determination and dedication, the historic steps and lights were meticulously restored by late 2019.
Duddell Street is a testament to Hong Kong’s unwavering spirit. I will arise and ascend those steps again.

Typhoon Saola Swipes China’s Coast
The center of Typhoon Saola brushed past Hong Kong on September 1, 2023, as it proceeded on its westward trajectory along China’s coast.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NOAA-NASA Suomi NPP satellite acquired this image of Typhoon Saola at approximately 1 p.m. local time. Around this time, sustained wind speeds reached 220 kilometers (140 miles) per hour, making it the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane. The storm hugged the coastline as it moved west throughout the day, with its center passing approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the south of Hong Kong after 10 p.m. local time.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued its most severe storm warning, the first time it has done so since Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018. Coastal areas braced for heavy rain, dangerous winds, and strong storm surge. The water in Hong Kong’s Tolo Harbour was expected to rise 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) above the normal tide level. Businesses closed, and flights, ferries, and other transit services were canceled. Some students saw what would have been their first day of school postponed.
On its way toward China, Saola passed near but did not make landfall over the Philippines. Still, it dumped heavy rain, caused landslides and flooding, and displaced thousands of people there, according to news reports. The storm also reached super typhoon status, characterized by sustained winds over 240 kilometers (150 miles) per hour, before being downgraded on September 1.
Farther out to sea, Typhoon Haikui was moving west toward Taiwan. On September 1, sustained wind speeds measured 140 kilometers (85 miles) per hour and were projected to increase.

Hiking to Big Wave Bay (大浪灣) along the Leaping Dragon Walk (龍躍徑)
Tumblr media
Last week, I went hiking with my wife and one of my cycling buddies to the Big Wave Bay (大浪灣) along the Leaping Dragon Walk (龍躍徑) located in the eastern corner of the Hong Kong Island.
We started our journey from the Siu Sai Wan Promenade in Chaiwan, which is right next to the entrance of the Leaping Dragon Walk.

i actually really did feel upset after this typhoon.. i’m not sure if i’m just making this up but my emotions seem to often be tied to the weather. i cried a lot seeing the leaves, branches, trees strewn all over.
vimeo
i was soooo stoked the papapya fruit made it through all the craziness!!
we had to clean up the driveway so that we could make it to work the next day (we’d already taken a day off to clean up, and the rest of hong kong HAD TO RETURN TO WORK AS THOUGH NOTHING HAD HAPPENED. the asian work ethic is REAL..ly sad)

Typhoon Mangkhut in Hong Kong
Tumblr media
Posted 4:56pm GMT+8, 16 of September, 2018
This is the most recent update by the Hong Kong Observatory on Typhoon Mangkhut. It’s equivalent to a catergory five hurricane, and is currently bigger than Hurricane Florence. However, it’s slowly beginning to let off.
The typhoon ten signal (the highest typhoon signal) was issued at 9:40am, and the red rain signal (second highest of its kind) was also raised around 10:10am by the HKO. Neither alerts have been changed yet.
I live in a more remote area on one of the outlying islands. The fishing villages have flooded, and trees have fallen on main paths and my friends’ houses. One of my friends is trapped inside her house, as both a telephone pole and a fallen tree have cut off her exits. There will be a danger of venomous snakes and other dangerous animals for the next week at least.
In the main city, my uncle’s building is swaying dangerously, and everyone on the upper floors have migrated down to the bottom for safety. Glass windows on skyscrapers have torn off or shattered, bamboo scaffolds for construction are breaking apart, and the sea level rose up by almost 4 meters. Some MTR (underground train) stations and ferry terminals are completely flooded.
Luckily enough, the typhoon itself hasn’t done any damage to my house, although the winds are absolutely terrifying.

My Sunday’s been stressful - Hong Kong is hit by the monster typhoon Mangkhut, and parts of my home are damaged.
I need to work on a translation assignment but I haven’t been able to concentrate at all - the loudness of the gusts scare me and I’m worried about the windows and rooftop.
What’s worse, we still don’t have power supply and my laptop ran out of battery. I can’t continue the work, so I’m just anxiously pacing around at home. :(
