started thinking something along the lines of "aw, what's wrong with me that i feel bad for unsubscribing from company emails" but then i remembered sitting in on a marketing meeting during my internship and listening to them proudly talk about how they use like. behavioral psychology to figure out how best to manipulate people into using their services and i feel much less like there's something wrong with me now

A lot of people are missing the point for that marketing post i think about Barbie / Oppenheimer / Grimace Shake challenges etc.

Its not about not posting about seeing a movie. You can see a movie and tell your friends about it, post about liking it or whatever. That's fine. The problem is that it's becoming a trend to go see these movies or participate in these challenges. People aren't doing it out of intrinsic motivation, but because they want to be part of the trend. This is what makes every corporate marketeer cum their pants.

Marketing is not to cater to people who would watch these movies nonetheless. Its to convince the people who normally wouldn't to do so anyway. Its about making people who don't participate feel left out so they'll go see it anyway and post their pink Barbie-watching outfits on Instagram so everyone else knows they're in on it. Its social manipulation to convince people to be part of something. Its very healthy to be conscious about it when you post about these trends and its also good to remind yourself that you shouldn't do anyone's marketing for them for free.

Again, there's nothing wrong with seeing a movie and posting about it. There is something wrong with making people feel left out for not seeing something and pressuring people to see something to belong in the in group.

I get hating certain political systems and trying to abolish totalitarian regimes but at the same time many of them are so interwoven with our history and society they have become tropes and when I consume media with a setting where the monarchy is absolute and revered then I am playing my part and sucking that princeling off

Yep, Dipper's got Bill's mark on his left palm, but currently Bill doesn't have anything. Not for any particular reason! Just because he hasn't thought to - he's not used to relationships with so many reciprocal aspects.

At some point either Bill's going to have a lightbulb go off and congratulate himself on a brilliant idea, or Dipper's going to bring it up to him. And if it's the latter, and Bill's lucky, it'll be for a romantic reason, and not a 'putting his foot down' one.

the FOMO thing in sso is also like, i feel its been getting worse and worse? every event theres now like 5-6 new sets of clothing+tack, or is it more than that?

having to make the emotional and economical decision "do i want to get this limited item before its gone?" can be hard even for just 1 item. like, deciding if youre getting the event horses or not.

but theres like 5 new shirts. 5 new saddles. etc for every type. and you have to make so many decisions, do i want this one, do i want that one, before theyre gone until next year (at which time there will be 5 new sets alongside those 5 previous sets).

it would be different if they added this many new items to the permanent shop bc then there's no FOMO, no real stress. you can look and go "oh cute! i want to get that thing!" without feeling bad and stressed and pressured about it. you can take your time and buy sc for it if you want, but on your terms, when its a good time for you to do that (or for your parents).

many other games like animal crossing pocket camp are also full of really predatory FOMO marketing in the exact same way. its hard for adults to withstand, and its even harder for kids. this isnt something we should just say "oh well" to. its created specifically to manipulate you. its not created in a fair way.

speaking as someone who really enjoyed Barbie, I just don't think Barbie is deep enough to warrant all the dramatic takes and arguments on it
