Knight Artorias vs Manus, Father of the Abyss
(Yes Artorias is left handed, but for this illustration it was planned that his left hand is already damaged, so he drags the sword in his right hand).

Basidia Post #2
Menuz:
A lot of work put into Basidia goes into the various menus and ui elements. I'm sorry if it's not terribly interesting, but for the past two weeks its basically all I've been looking at. More specifically, I've been working on a door lock system and a bomber's notebook style journal.
Lock System:
The Winds of Basidia is a time-loop game, and, as such, Modus and I have put a lot of thought into how we want to allow players to take knowledge they've gained into a subsequent loop and do things faster next time. One of the things we came up with was a lock system. The idea is that the player will go through some questline to learn the combination to a lock, and then on the next loop they can just skip the quest and go directly to the lock with the combo they've recorded. For the actual design of the lock, we came up with a marble turning system somewhat inspired by various Myst and Riven puzzles. There are four marbles placed on a comet-shaped bit of blue marble that can be turned in 4 different orientations. The comet-shape has cultural significance with ties to the Basidia church, but I'll likely go into more detail about that another time.
Reminder Screen:
The journal is made up of two sections: the reminder screen, and the locks screen. This menu is a feature I've been very excited to implement, and as of today the "reminders" section is nearly complete. The locks screen will be used to manually write down any lock combinations the player comes across, but I haven't gotten started on it yet. The reminders screen allows players to scroll through a list of discovered locations and manually place little reminder icons on a timeline that goes through the three days that the game takes place in. That's basically it. Despite my excitement I have a hard time finding things to talk about with this menu. I just really love it when games put the onus on the player to keep track of all the things they have to do, and I also love it when games give the player little tools and interfaces to do with what they will. In a way, I think that (for a lot of genres) the closer a game plays to an operating system, the better. I am really happy with how the visuals for this screen came out, and I think that coming up with and adding in new little icons to represent things the player might want to make note of will be fun.
Conclusion:
I find it really hard to make quick progress on menus because working on them is kind of a slog, so I hope they are more interesting to learn about than they are to make. Despite how grueling the process is, I'm always really excited when progress gets made on them, and it genuinely pains me to see how many modern games put so little thought into how they can spice up menus and UI from an aesthetic perspective. Modus and I are both pretty passionate about vibin' UIs, and it's been nice for us to put some nice ones together for this game. I think it's something people should try to have the most fun with as they can, and I absolutely do not encourage anyone to think of menus as something that needs to be purely mechanical first and foremost. For the next two weeks I'm gonna be working on Midwest Lost (my souls-like that takes place in the american midwest), and I am gonna have a lot of fun showing that one off, so see ya then. Oh yeah, maybe I should also mention Modus and I are both working on making personal websites, so maybe you'll hear more about that in the future.

ENMITY ENDER |
THE END BRINGER
ENMITY SCHADENFREUDE |
THE RELENTLESS VIOLENCE
ENMITY MANUS |
THE UNIVERSAL UNREST
_____________
The Enmities/Agents of Chaos exist as physical embodiments of Reason/Chaos - more the “Why” of universal energy and what gives everything the reason to do, beyond the means of existing.
That being said, it doesn’t mean they’re 100% a-okay individuals.
Despite being the literal reason/being that will cause the end of the universe, Ender does their best (passively) to keep things running in the background, but overall is pretty much “over everyone’s dumba**ed petty bulls***” and will go between helpful to playfully tormenting the lower god tier beings.
Schadenfreude exists to exact gratuitous acts of violence in a show of their massive ego and need to be seen as the strongest and most feared of the Chaos/Reason triarchy, but also in the triarchy of the god tier they’re a part of. Despite this, like with all fallible beings, it’s all one hell of an internalised/now externalised mask of underlying panic.
Manus just wants to be alone to wallow - placid and passive, they exist within their own void, or that of Schadenfreude’s as the receiving end of endless acts of violence. Though near silent and unsettling when present, they still retain their underlying, subconscious side of whimsy, and will occasionally have their moments of silly enjoyment in the small things the universe has to offer.

uh oh, more insane theories from the local Lucatiel Simp
Y'all know the drill by now.
So relating to my last post, the second theory I have concerning the Darklurker is that it is the last fragment of Manus' being, similar to the queens within the game.
First, an explanation of the queens within ds2 in case you're one of those poor fucks who follows me but doesn't play ds2:
Within Dark Souls, one of the most important entities lorewise is Manus, the Father of the Abyss. His soul, contrary to those of the other Lords, was dark, borne from the shadows that linger on the edge of a fire's light (in my opinion. He did possess the Dark Soul, but it's not really specified what made it different, apart from its name and apparent power).
However, Manus wasn't manus when he found it. He was the Furtive Pygmy, and actually split the Dark Soul into fragments prior to his first death, which led to the creation of humankind.
Later on, people from Oolacile, a land of Golden Sorcery that (ironically) manipulated light, dug his corpse up and at the behest of the Darkstalker Kaathe (one of the Abyssal serpents who manipulate the world from shadow) performed terrible and cruel experiments upon it.
These experiments, coupled with the theft of the Pygmy's amulet, drove its lingering soul mad, causing the birth of Manus and the complete devastation of Oolacile, and the creation of the place that would become known as the Abyss.
The main character of Dark Souls 1, the Chosen Undead, eventually destroys Manus, and that's the end. Or so we thought.
As it turns out, parts of manus persisted within the Abyss, emerging thousands of years later as four (or five, if you think Mytha is one) women, each borne from one of his Negative emotions. Alsanna from his Fears, Elana from his Wrath, Nashandra from his Want, and while Nadalia isn't specified, a lot of people think she is his Loneliness.
Now, something you may have noticed is that none of these are particularly good things, which makes sense. The birth of Manus was not a happy event, and I think that most goodness was driven from his Soul upon his birth.
Most.
My main theory for the Darklurker (took long enough, eh?) is that it is the virtues of Manus. Those better aspects of him that were nearly lost during the transformation into the progenitor of the boundless dark within men. The Darklurker's lack of a voice at all, its ability to wield magic, and its pseudo-angelic appearance reminds me of a fallen angel, which is notably different from the appearance of the Abyssal Daughters. They, for the most part, resemble darker beings such as Demons, Grim Reapers, or horribly twisted human forms. The otherwordly appearance of the Darklurker makes me feel like its nature is much less grounded, and more abstract. Hence, the virtues of Manus.
anyway sorry for the rambling, I just realized i have a semi-captive audience. Love y'all moots.
