seeing some people's reaction to weird gamer men oversexualizing kiriko is "mauga is right there, half naked, with serveral pin-up sprays" and while i do agree to an extent, i do feel like alot of people are kind of ignoring like. the racial element of mauga's sexualization, like i like mauga, he's hot, but the second i saw him in the short story, i wasn't a big fan of the whole "big savage brown indigenious guy" and it feels like very few people are pointing that out.
RIGHT LIKE. we cannot fix "gamer men fixate on fictional asian girls to a violent degree, usually in a racist way or enabling racist tropes already present in the character" with "gamer girls fixate on fictional brown men to a violent degree in a racist way or enabling racist tropes present in the character" like you guys are part of the same problemmmmmmm youre doing the same thinggg its not better because youre doing it to men like.
i think some people only want to see the kiriko problem as misogyny and while im not going to even pretend that ISNT a massive part of it, theres still like. a reason kiriko and d.va and mei are fascinations for these dudes. there is a pointed difference between the way these three get spoken about compared to their white counterparts (and their dark-skinned counterparts too - look at the responses to illari for a really easy comparison to how kiriko is treated). their ~exoticism~ as asian women is part of the appeal. even if you dont just wanna take the way dudes online treat them (like making a joke that shes "obvious pornbait" for speaking japanese and using JSL) as evidence of that, look at their marketing. kirikos whole thing is atheleisure traditional, shes got her Mystical Japanese Spiritualism Ninja Powers and her magic doggy and they constantly put her in japanese and korean fashion, and dva has been constantly crossing over with korean merch companies. i cant help but notice theres no brazilian IP crossovers or merch launches for lucio, or any attempt to Sell Peru To Gamers for illari. they couldnt even pick a town in Samoa to name maugas map after. these people wouldn't buy that stuff because it's not fetishized in the same way asia is.
but like. a lot of the people trying to Gotcha these racist dudes with an asian fetish just whip out their favourite racist tropes instead and its a really bad look. like you guys dont wanna examine how your examples of The Characters Its Okay To Hypersexualize are all brown? even the people who wanna fuck cassidy dont talk about him like this. or like. fuck if you want a good comparison for mauga lets look at roadhog. big half-naked tank who theyve been playing up a sexual energy/comic relief duology on since day one with racially insensitive cosmetic options. nobody treats it like its completely normal to talk about him that way. the dev team isnt pushing pinups of him out. he isnt flexing his boobs in trailers. hes a white dude*, so he gets the bare minimum dignity of being treated normally. incidentially hot, maybe, but for the most part his character is sold on being cool , funny and scary. mauga is being sold 50% on being a Sexy Rogue Love Interest and 50% on. releasing late. they put in so little effort for him to be anything else despite hyping him up as suuuper significant to the lore and a major gamechanger its almost embarrassing to watch. (this is why that short annoyed me so much for anyone keeping track).

Kia Ora, Te Ao!
Tumblr media
Hello, World! It's official - Robbie has a tumblr now. Absolutely unfathomable. Honestly, it's mostly because it was this or Wordpress (or a more obscure indie dev forum) and this seemed the most accessible and quirky. I'm sure this won't lead to another awful endless scrolling habit. Any advice for the visual side of things is warmly received! I want this blog to be a fun part of the week, because a lot of fun will be had developing RoB. Just realised that acronym happens to be my name. Could be worse.
Okay! Now that the initial ramble into the void is out of the way, it's time to get into the c o n c e p t.
This tumblr is a devlog for my NZ ecosystem simulator currently titled "rule of birds", which I will be working on for the next 8 weeks as part of Blackbird Foundation's "Protostars" program. This means a weekly check-in with the other creatives in the program, the organizers at Blackbird, and a post for all of you here.
I'm breaking this week's post into 3 sections just to cover the bases;
01.1 -a bit about my creative practice and how it led to this project
01.2 -a discussion of "flocking" in programming (using p5.js)
01.3 -a discussion of NZ natural history
So here's the intro post, where I ramble about myself for a sec.
Tumblr media
So! basically, I specialize in spatial design, I love working with anything nature-related, and I want to make a video game.
Lately I've been on a tangent based around art in NZ's cultural context - the design principles behind whakairo (Maori woodcarving) and how their composition conveys meaning, how histories of spirituality, tribal and colonial relations affected design, and my own art interpreting my natural surroundings with photography and charcoal drawing. I can neither confirm nor deny whether there will be an art zine compiling a wee bit of this work on the community table at the Whanganui Zinefest this Saturday.
That tangent branched off into a focus on natural history that's the keystone of rule of birds. My motivation for focusing on an ecosystem simulator is to articulate a basis for the sort of games I want to come out of Aotearoa. The sim will be the proof of concept - and I suppose this blog will be the manifesto.
I feel like there's a massive demand for games exploring NZ history - like, imagine a big-budget maori-led release set in pre-colonial time, with all the unique aspects of survival, resource management and day to day activity that involved - or an assassin's creed type action game based during the time of Te Kooti. It goes unsaid that Kupe is one of the best parts of Sid Meier's Civilization VI - iykyk.
youtube
What I think separates a good game from a great one is how alive the virtual world feels - rather than being led through an a-to-b progression of events presented in the same visual style I've seen countless times before, if the world can react in a dynamic way, and the details in the background are crafted to feel organic and immersive, I'm going to want to stop and wander off the beaten track that an objective marker may be pointing me towards.
The last game that caught my attention in this way - and coincidentally the one that made me want to put my coding knowledge to the test with gamedev - was, of course, Rain World. To everyone who knows me, I'm sure you're surprised I've made it three paragraphs without bringing this game up. I'm not going to go into too much detail here, because there is *a lot*, but key points are you are one creature among many scavenging for food in a brutal biomechanical ecosystem, hibernating between cycles of cataclysmic rain, and the game plays like basically nothing else due to how the coded behaviour of every entity in the world follows its own logic that has much more to do with its own survival than the experience of you as a player.
Here's a nice little illustration of the physics behind a movement-sensing tentacle monster, to give a sort of discrete example - but the creatures that act according to behavioural karma systems and the dynamics of how the different lizards scuffle and coordinate with each other is worth looking into too, if this is your thing.
(Source: GDC, Curious Archive)
Now, I really want to jump into some of this behavioural coding stuff, so I'm just going to move on to collecting things for the next post - hope this has been an interesting read! if you somehow found this page in your tumblr algorithm, welcome! I'll also be posting bits on the instagram page @robbiek_devlogs and you can check out my other work on my main insta @robbiek_art
Hei kōnā mai,

Next up: simulation in coding, natural history research post #1

Far Cry 3's Rook Islands - how based on Indonesia is it actually is
according to an Indonesian who is not exactly qualified to write this post but by god will i make that everyone else's problem. Long post under the cut in case you'd like to know the fun facts and insights about the game and Rook and how much they got right and wrong.
Here's what I will discuss:
Locations, Flora & Fauna
The Rakyat and what they preach and practice
Citra, Dennis and Vaas
I would like to preface by saying Indonesia is a big ass archipelago, literally the biggest archipelagic state in the world, and we have many cultures, sub-languages, and various indigenous tribes of which I'm not part of. So there could be a possibility that the FC3 game devs were basing Rook especially the Rakyat on certain tribes I'm not familiar with or with an actual cultural rep who knows more than I do, but somehow I doubt that too, considering how they seem to just base Rook vaguely on various Polynesian areas.
1. Locations, Flora & Fauna
The Rook Islands page in the Far Cry 3 Wiki does a great job of explaining this in more depth than I do, but to TL;DR it: the flora & fauna in Rook makes it seem like Rook's most likely in the eastern side of Indonesia (sharing the same fauna and flora as Papua New Guinea and Australia). This is especially evident since Rook has komodo dragons and they're only available in Nusa Tenggara Timur.
However, the vastly different animals in the North and South Islands of Rook indicates the possibility of Rook running through the Wallace Line, which irl happens between Bali and Lombok, two very close islands which have vastly different faunas.
So actually to squash down the locations into two tiny islands and grab all the crazy animals into two distinct parts like this actually happens irl, which is cool!
Tumblr media
I got nothing much to add about plants cus they all seem to be pretty straightforward and all are available in Indonesia from what I see... with the exception that I previously had believed that the white plant that Jason can pick to craft immunity effects are jasmines, but it seems that officially they're tiares which are more commonly known as being used as leis by the Polynesian people. Either way, both Jasmines and Tiares are small, worn traditionally by women, smells nice and have some spooky connotations, so same difference to me :^)
The only location in-game with an Indonesian name is Beras Town. Beras means 'uncooked rice', so there's a little fun fact to note since when you get there the first time to see Hoyt shooting at the natives it was fittingly in a rice paddy field.
2. The Rakyat and what they preach and practice
The Rakyat is a dead giveaway that Rook is based on Indonesia or Malaysia. Rakyat means 'people' in both languages, and is pronounced correctly in-game. However, most of the Rakyat weren't speaking Indonesian and spoke with a New Zealand accent so are they like. Samoan? Maori?? God knows.
Indonesia has certain tribes who have tattooing as part of their history and culture, but the tatau seems to be based more on the Samoan tatau, at least from the name itself. Tattoos are called tato in Indonesian and not tatau. The design is also not like any known designs from tribes that have tattooing culture in Indonesia. With how Dennis explains each animal on Jason's tatau had meaning in the Rakyat's history for warriors, it seems like the entire thing was a creative liberty.
Other than the tataus, there's not much we know of about The Rakyat other than they're natives of the island. There's a side mission where you have to spy on a cheating husband, this one stuck out to me for a couple reasons. One being it's funny as hell, and also because the name of the guy the husband is cheating with is Jalak. Jalak is the Indonesian name for a Starling, there's a specific sub-species of the bird that is endemic to Bali, Indonesia. It's extra-funny if it's implied that the man the husband is cheating with is named after a bird because the word bird in Indonesia (burung) is a euphemism for dick.
Tumblr media
Another side mission also has a minor character you have to find called 'Senin' which was pronounced wrong but it's an Indonesian word that means 'Monday'.
Those are all I remember, I'll edit if I remember more!
3. Citra, Dennis and Vaas
Citra - let's start with the most glaring thing. Citra is not supposed to be said with a 'S' sound but a 'Ch' sound. (if you go to google translate and type in Citra in Indonesia and listen to it, that's the right pronunciation). If they wanted to pronounce it like they did in-game, they should've just named her Sitra which would still sound pretty natural as an Indonesian name.
Other than her name pronunciation error, the name itself is actually pretty solid. Citra means image, like 'made in the image of god' kind of image. Considering she is the Rakyat's leader and is obsessed with cultivating an image of strength and traditional values, it's a fitting name.
Citra is also the only character to speak proper Bahasa Indonesia. She actually pronounces the words correctly and speaks clearly, which I was pleasantly surprised with! Just ignore the way the Indonesian is written in subtitles cus they are completely wrong. She only says a few lines so I'll discuss them here:
Senapan ke bawah - said when Jason first shows up with Dennis at her temple and she asks her men to stand down. Translates to 'Lower your guns.'
Berikan saya herbal - said when she asks for the first potion that Jason has to drink to get the vision that led him to hallucinate where to find Willis. Translates to: 'Give me the potion/herbs'.
Cinta untuk anak-anak kami - you can miss this if you didn't pick her ending. This is the only correctly subtitled Indonesian line, and it translates to 'love for our children'. Not child. Children. Plural. Miss ma'am... what in the everliving fuck are you trying to do hoping to have children with a guy who's shooting blanks at this point and who you proceed to kill immediately after? Let's move on.
Dennis speaks Bahasa Melayu, which is quite interesting to note, considering he is a foreigner who tries very hard to fit in. Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia are very similar to each other, hence why we can understand each other, but there is still a distinct difference between them. Since we're overanalyzing, it could be said that Dennis and Citra has never been 100% on the same page with how they speak slightly different languages.
Vaas never once speaks Bahasa Indonesia or Melayu, which considering how he has thrown away his Rakyat roots, makes some sense. And I love Michael Mando but I think he would definitely butcher the language lmao so it's great that they didn't make him say any native lines. Vaas is also not an Indonesian name, though we do have vas as a word, since vaas is Dutch for 'vase' and we picked up a few words when Netherlands colonized Indonesia. but i doubt they used the word vase for a villain name but hell, who knows. If we wanna get funky I guess we could say that Vaas was always colonized/under someone's control even down to his name.
Conclusion
Far Cry 3's Rook personally for me didn't do a good job at being Indonesian enough, from how villages look, to location names, to little things like the lack of food stalls that you would 100% be able to find if you just walk down the road in any location here. Though to be fair, it was 2012 and as such, a different time with different standards that they have since then set higher for themselves. Ubisoft did a much better job at adapting Kyrat into a believable country that was based off Nepal with rich world-building from NPC notes, locations in map, to the little items you can loot from the enemies that included Bagh-chal pieces! FC5 was also very true to Montana from what I'm led to believe from the countless praises in Reddit, and FC6 had a lot of great representation too.
At the end of the day, FC3's a great game with a solid map based vaguely off a location I just happen to be familiar with, and that is still pretty fucking cool.

hm im neither native american nor maori so i should probably not say much abt this, but i realize with the feathers this kinda looks like a native american stereotype? but im also aware that the devs are based in aotearoa so the design could be based on maori traditional wear that also uses feathers (there is another design in the game with maori face tattoos, so i think that checks out)?

Cennetten Kopmuş Birer Parça Gibi Yerler
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Yo you totally don’t have to explain it if you don’t want but would you be willing to explain what’s going on with Cyberpunk and why it shouldn’t be purchased?
The game’s steeped in a whole bunch of bigoted shit including transphobia, racism, and ableism. Plus the dev team was treated like shit with major crunch for the game to even come out. Most recent has been the fact that a required part of the game was literally designed after a process that induces seizures with no way of turning it off/avoiding it. (The devs are planning to add an option now but it truthfully feels more like them covering their asses after the backlash—that option should have been there in the first place or y’know don’t fucking design your game to cause seizures)
Then there’s blatant cultural appropriation of mokos in the character creator (there’s a more in-depth post on that I reblogged not too long ago if you want to look for yourself, but basically they’re deeply personal maori tattoos and are like 100% a closed cultural practice that got added to the game for ✨aesthetics✨), and apparently a general lack of decent options for making black characters at least hair-wise. As well as a bunch of other stereotypes of black and asian characters.
And finally the transphobia,, god where to even start with this... honestly I’m too fucked up and sad at the moment to really put it to words so i’m just gonna link an article that should do the job, hope you don’t mind. Transmisogyny tw for that.

I saw your take on lalafell and they're absolutely AMAZING! The amount of detailing and arrangements were so lovely to look at, it's so clear you took careful consideration in looking into Maori and Fijian culture, full on kudos to you! And I hope this isn't rude to ask, but do you take comissions? If not I completely understand, still love your art!
oh wow—thanks, i really appreciate that! i figure if the devs aren't going to acknowledge that they've made lalafell canonically polynesian (beyond the really barebones touristy stuff like leis and inaccurate hula dancing) then i might as well try my best to tip the scales by putting some actual effort in. yeah technically fiji is melanesia but the stiff cone shapes of the barkcloth skirts felt more flattering for the lalafell body type so i figured why not base one of the many islands there!
im sorry to say i've never taken on commissions because i'm very inconsistent in my ability to actually draw to a high standard or within a normal time frame. i managed to do that height chart in a day because its a simpler, sketchier style but ive taken as long as 13 months to do more complicated pieces.
you'd have better luck my boyfriend @starshucker! he's a very talented illustration major, and let me commission him to do these higher quality digital refs for my wol and his mums.

feel free to send him an ask, and thanks again for the kind words!!

Civilization 6 New Frontier predictions:
So far Ethiopia, the Maya and Gran Columbia have been revealed. We are only getting one alternate leader (who I think will either be European or East Asian). I think the most likely additions are:
Venice
Portugal
Vietnam or Thailand
The Apache or Navajo
The Ochete Shakowin (Sioux)
Morroco
I think these are the most likely because they are located in underrepresented regions, and they also are most popular among Americans.
Civ loves European counties, and Portugal and Venice are the most requested civs to be added.
Southeast Asia currently only has the Khmer, and while civ usually only has one SE Asian civ, the fact that more will be added makes me think that Vietnam (which has previously been represented as a city state) and Thailand (which has been in other civ games) are the most likely Asian candidates.
The Navajo and Apache are likely I think because the SouthWest US is still very empty, and they are very well known. I think if not either of those, then we would probably get the Lakota or Dakota lead by Red Cloud.
Morroco has a history of being in Civ, and they would probably play an economic play style, something that would balance out having the Maya who are focused on science and Gran Columbia which is focused on domination. I’m okay with this introduction, but I wish they would add more than just two new African civs.
Civs I don’t think they will add:
The Haudenosaunne were my bet initially, but there is so much already in that region with Canada and the US starting there that I don’t think they would add another civ there, especially because they seem to only add non-white civs if they have to.
Any more Pacific Island civilizations seem unlikely because we already have the Maori. Even though there definitely should be more; there has not been an outcry for civs like Hawai’i or Papua because the fans of civ are mostly white or living in a majority-white country.
Nigeria or any other Subsaharran African Civs seem unlikely because there are already 6 African civs! Which is very underrepresented compared to the dozen European civs, but the game has not been known for its equal representation. Morroco and Ethiopia are really the only two African Civs that I have seen people asking for.
Any Aboriginal AustralianCivs are pretty unlikely, which disappoints me the most. There hasn’t been a lot of people asking for them, and people complaining about that region of the map have been mostly satisfied after the inclusion of the settler state Australia. The devs also explained that they didn’t want to add any in the last expansion because they didn’t want another war-focused civ (an extremely racist sentiment)
Anyways, those are my predictions for the new civ expansion

i heard someone rec a short photography indie game called umurangi generation by a maori dev. it has no dialog but its still interesting. just though id pass it on since i saw you wer talkin about cp77 & all the probs with it like appropriation :)
Sat down and had a look and the appearance/concept of the game is already very intriguing! I can see the developer put a lot of love into it. Perhaps when I’m not worrying about uni work I’ll definitely snap it up and give the developer the love they deserve!
Thank you for the recommendation anon! <3

I'm kinda fucking pissed off at the blogs I follow. Half of them are reblogging shit about Cyberpunk being shitty. Where were they when The Last of Us Part 2 was scene after scene of torture porn featuring one of the few LGBT characters that developer has created? Where were they when Naughtydog was forcing their devs to crunch AND to watch hour after hour of real world executions and hangings to get the physics "as realistic as possible?" Where were they when a professional game critic compared TLoUP2 to Schindler's List of all goddamn things (which I feel might be at least a little anti-Semitic to say, but as a gentile individual I don't get to decide what is or is not anti-Semitic) and that tweet was retweeted by the lead writer? I have seen nothing about Cyberpunk that makes it worse than TLoUP2 (I actually think Cyberpunk is less harmful than TLoUP2), so to see my mutuals of all people dragging THIS game when they didn't have any outrage over any other "Triple A" title this year pisses me the fuck off. I know this game has some problematic aspects, but they're being blown out of proportion. The transphobic ad slogan that was meant to show how terrible corporations are was apologized for, and it and the racist portrayal of that one gang, which is likely a hold over from the fact that this is based on a ttrpg from the 70s, were from 2019, enough time to be rectified (btw, no one is bringing them up at all beyond "this game is transphobic and racist" so I'm inclined to believe that it's been dealt with). The strobing was a coincidence and will likely be patched along with most of the bugs and glitches which are ubiquitous to any game releasing these days because no "Triple A" developer will ever release a finished product at launch ever again. The Maori tattoos are a bit of an issue, but I blame that more on Polynesian rights aren't as entrenched in the zeitgeist yet and not on any intentional maliciousness. Just let me enjoy a game I've been looking forward to for over half a decade without making me feel like I should hate it and myself. To be clear, I'm not saying the game isn't problematic. I'm saying that it's not as problematic as it's being made out to be and that the hypocrisy of my mutuals pisses me off.
