Brazil government gives FIFA assurances in bid to host 2027 Women's World Cup
Brazil’s government handed FIFA assurances about officially bidding to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup
Tumblr media
Brazil's government gave FIFA assurances Saturday about officially bidding to host the 2027 Women's World Cup. Latin America has never hosted any of the nine editions of the tournament.
Brazil's sports minister André Fufuca and the president of the country's soccer body, Ednaldo Rodrigues, delivered the document in person to FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The three had photos together at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, where they watched local Fluminense beat Boca Juniors 2-1 to win its maiden Copa Libertadores title.
Brazil's government said on its social media channels Saturday night that the document is signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and it gives FIFA the seven assurances that are requested in such bids. Among those are guarantees of especially assigned tax exemptions, work permits and visa procedures.
“The Brazilian bid to host the Women's World Cup is part of the current government policy of stimulus to bigger participation of women in soccer,” Brazil's sports ministry said in a statement.

Felicidades Argentina por avanzar a la final! 🏆
Tienen todo para ser campeones 🇦🇷
It was a great game of football tonight in the Lusail stadium in Qatar as Argentina deservedly beat Croatia 3-0.
I was in the stands with my sister and her Argentine husband cheering Argentina on. At one goal up Argentine fans didn’t get complacent because they knew how plucky Croatia are good at clawing back one goal deficits. At 2-0 up Argentina could afford to breathe a little and just maybe dream about having one foot in the World Cup final. At 3-0 it was pure celebration time.
Leo Messi now gets one last chance to win the piece of silverware that has eluded him in his trophy-laden career. Messi will have the opportunity to make amends for the bitter disappointment of losing the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in Rio's iconic Maracana stadium and he does so after a year after he helped end Argentina’s 28-year wait for a trophy at the Copa América. For Lionel Messi, the crowning glory beckons.
Tomorrow France play Morocco and I’ll be in the stands watching with my French partner. If France win then we’ll see how deep sisterly love runs. But for now it’s about knocking back a few more Coronas beers and partying the night out.
Hasta luego, amigos....

Interview with Thomas ahead of the 100th Champions League match at the Allianz Arena
By Kicker
Tumblr media
Mr. Müller, do you remember your first European Cup appearance in the Allianz Arena?
Yes, exactly. In March 2009, I was substituted for Bastian Schweinsteiger after just over 70 minutes in the match against Sporting Lisbon. In the 90th minute, I managed to score a goal on my debut to make the final score 7:1. It was a left-footed shot and, of course, a great moment for me as a 19-year-old. Scoring a goal in your first Champions League game in front of 65,000 spectators, that's when the emotions start to bubble.
Tumblr media
You have played the most European Cup matches in the Allianz Arena, namely 74, and scored the second most goals, a total of 32. Only Robert Lewandowski is ahead of you in this hit parade with 38 goals in 38 appearances. Which of your goals do you rate as the best or most important?
My most important goal was the 1:0 lead in the 2012 dahoam final against Chelsea FC. Toni Kroos had crossed the ball from the half-left over the Chelsea defense into the five-meter area, I ran into the back of them and pushed the ball onto the turf with my forehead from close range just before the goal line, from where it bounced into the short corner under the crossbar. This brutal explosion of emotion was incredible, I've never felt it as intensely as I did at that moment.
Tumblr media
Which European Cup match in the Allianz Arena will remain a special memory for you?
My top three are the final at home, the 4-0 semi-final win against FC Barcelona in 2013 and the round of 16 against Juventus in 2016, which we won 4-2 in extra time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You scored a goal in each of these games, even two against Barcelona.
So it's all the nicer that they were goals in big matches, in knockout games.
Was the Allianz Arena more of an advantage or a disadvantage in the 2012 final against Chelsea FC?
Of course it was an advantage. Sometimes it's also about the little things, such as knowing the procedures, the dressing room and the characteristics of the pitch. There was a great atmosphere in the stadium and throughout the city. The Bayern fans did a fantastic job of pushing us forward. We played a great game, but unfortunately we didn't score enough goals.
Is the atmosphere in the Champions League in the Allianz Arena generally different, more tingling than in the league, even when it's against top teams in the Bundesliga?
The atmosphere in the Champions League is of course something special. When the floodlights come on and the Champions League anthem plays, the fans and players get that extra tingle.
Tumblr media
You became world champions at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and won the Champions League trophy at Wembley Stadium in London in 2013. Which arena in the world or in the European Cup was the most impressive for you?
Difficult to say. But the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid is impressive: in the middle of the city with its steep stands and Real fans all in white.

Lionel Messi
Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini (Rosario, Argentina, June 24, 1987), known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine soccer player who plays as a striker. Historical player of the Fútbol Club Barcelona, he is currently a free agent after ending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain of Ligue 1 in France. He is also an international with the Argentina team, a team of which he is captain.
Often considered the best player in the world and one of the best of all time,[9] he is the only footballer in history to have won, among other distinctions, seven Ballon d'Or awards, seven FIFA awards for best player of the world, six Golden Boots and two Golden Balls of the Soccer World Cup. In 2020, he became the first soccer player and the first Argentine to receive a Laureus award and was included in the Ballon d'Or Dream Team.
With Barcelona he has won 35 titles, including ten in La Liga, four in the UEFA Champions League and seven in the Copa del Rey.
A prolific scorer, he holds, among others, the records for the most goals in a season, [10] in the same club and in a calendar year. He is also the all-time top scorer for Barcelona and the Argentine team, in La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the non-European player with the most goals in the UEFA Champions League.
Born and raised in the city of Rosario, at the age of 13 he settled in Spain, where Barcelona agreed to pay for treatment of the hormonal disease he had been diagnosed with as a child. After rapid progression through the Barcelona Youth Academy, he made his official first-team debut in October 2004, aged seventeen. Despite being injury prone early in his career, as early as 2006 he established himself as a pivotal player for the club. His first uninterrupted campaign was the 2008-09 season, in which Barcelona reached the first treble in Spanish football. Due to his style of playing as a small left-handed dribbler, [11] he was soon compared to compatriot Diego Maradona who, in 2007, declared him his "successor".
In 2009, at the age of twenty-two, he won his first Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Three successful seasons followed, in which he won an unprecedented four Ballon d'Ors in a row. His personal best campaign so far is the 2011-12 season, in which he set the record for most goals in a season, both in La Liga and in other European competitions. Over the next two seasons, he too suffered injuries and, in 2014, lost the Ballon d'Or to Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he considers his rival. He returned to his best form during the 2014-15 campaign, in which he surpassed the records for absolute top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League and achieved a historic second treble with Barcelona, as well as winning his fifth Ballon d'Or. winning it for the sixth and seventh time in 2019 and 2021.
As an Argentine international, he has represented his country in fourteen major tournaments. At the youth level, in 2005 he participated with the under-20 team in the South American Cup in Colombia and won the World Cup in the Netherlands, a tournament in which he finished as the best player and top scorer and, with the under-23, received the medal of gold at the 2008 Olympic Games. After making his debut in the senior team in August 2005, at the 2006 World Cup in Germany he became the youngest Argentine to play and score in a World Cup. The following year, in the Copa América, he was named the best young player of the tournament. As captain since August 2011, he reached the finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Copa América and the Copa América Centenario with his team, as well as winning the 2021 Copa América against Brazil at the Maracana and, in 2022, the Finalissima against Italy at Wembley and the World Cup in Qatar against France at the Lusail stadium.

Argentina beat Croatia to reach World Cup final
New Post has been published on https://plugzafrica.com/argentina-beat-croatia-to-reach-world-cup-final/
Argentina beat Croatia to reach World Cup final
Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez were on target as Argentina beat Croatia on Tuesday to reach the World Cup final.
Argentina’s master and pupil Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez combined to deadly effect as they reached their sixth World Cup final with victory over Croatia at Lusail Stadium. Messi now gets one last chance to win the piece of silverware that has eluded him in his trophy-laden career but Manchester City’s 22-year-old striker Alvarez claimed at least an equal share of top billing as Argentina ensured they will return here on Sunday to face either France or Morocco.
Argentina’s little genius looked to be struggling with a hamstring problem early on but recovered enough to break the deadlock from the penalty spot after 34 minutes following Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic’s foul on the marauding Alvarez. Alvarez doubled Argentina’s lead five minutes later when he took Messi’s header just inside Croatian territory and embarked on a slaloming run, aided by fortunate bounces off Josip Juranovic and Borna Sosa, before beating Livakovic.
There was no fortune involved in a brilliant third after the break as Messi mesmerised Croatia’s excellent defender Josko Gvardiol on the byeline before playing in Alvarez for the finish. Messi will now have the opportunity to make amends for the bitter disappointment of losing the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in Rio’s iconic Maracana.
Messi’s last crack at World Cup glory
When Messi stretched and clutched the top of his left hamstring 19 minutes into this World Cup semi-final, there was a fear the dream for Argentina and their iconic number 10 might have the nightmare ending.
Instead, Messi recovered after a spell at a walking pace to inspire Argentina as they go in search of a third triumph in the tournament following victories in 1978 and 1986. And what a far cry it was from when Argentina was the victim of what is still the biggest shock of this World Cup in Qatar when they lost their opening game 2-1 to Saudi Arabia, despite Messi putting one of the pre-tournament favourites in front.
It was in 1990 that Argentina was stunned in a similar fashion by Cameroon in their first game and went on to reach the final, losing 1-0 to West Germany. Now they have the chance to go one better as the World Cup reaches its climax. And Messi can finally claim the crown in his final tournament.
Argentina used this meeting with the stubborn, resilient and talented 2018 finalists Croatia to produce their most convincing performance of this World Cup, suggesting Lionel Scaloni’s side is hitting their peak at the perfect time. Messi, inevitably, was at the heart of it all and involved in every goal, but Alvarez has shown in Qatar that he has, barring accidents, a wonderful career ahead of him. Much has been made of Manchester City’s big spending over the years but what a coup it was to sign Alvarez from River Plate for the bargain price of £14.1m.
Croatia bow out with heads held high
Croatia was undone, like so many before them, by the brilliance of Messi – as well as his young partner Alvarez – after making a confident and composed start to this World Cup semi-final. Their defence was exposed in uncharacteristic fashion for Argentina’s first two goals and there was little even their outstanding young defender Gvardiol could do about Messi’s twisting run that set up the third.
Croatia, however, has had an outstanding tournament once more as the country with a population of only four million followed up their appearance in the final in Russia in 2018 with a place in the last four in Qatar. If Argentina have Messi, then Croatia has their own master footballer in Luka Modric and he received warm applause from all parts of Lusail Stadium when he was substituted with nine minutes left.
He, like Messi, had his sights set on a World Cup triumph after experiencing the same pain of final defeat, but it was not to be. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic and his players can be proud of their efforts, despite being well beaten here, and in 20-year-old RB Leipzig defender Gvardiol, they have unearthed one of the break-out stars of this World Cup who will serve them well for many years and is already a serious target for Europe’s elite clubs.

Brazil’s toxic politics stain a soccer icon: The national team jersey
Tumblr media
Omar Monteiro Jr.’s hillside bar in Rio de Janeiro, a ten-minute drive from Maracana Stadium — the cathedral of global soccer — is a haunt for Brazilian progressives. You’ll find a flattering mural of the country’s leftist president-elect painted on a wall. What you won’t find — at least not on Monteiro’s back — is what might be the most recognizable uniform in sport: The yellow and green jersey of Brazil’s national team.
As Brazil begins World Cup play Thursday favored to win a record sixth title, what would normally be a moment of joyful anticipation in Latin America’s largest nation is being dampened by lingering division in the aftermath of last month’s ugly presidential election. The divide is ripping at the seams of the canarinho, the once-sacred “little canary” shirt, which was co-opted as campaign wear before, during and after the vote by supporters of the “Trump of the Tropics” — election loser Jair Bolsonaro.
Camps set up across the country by the outgoing president’s backers to protest the election victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are seas of yellow and green. For many Brazilians, the adoption of the colors by Bolsonaristas is tainting a jersey made famous by generations of graceful greats of the Beautiful Game, from Pelé to Ronaldinho.
“I have a yellow shirt. I used to wear it,” Monteiro said, but “man, it’s very difficult [now]. The way they appropriated the shirt. It’s embarrassing to wear it. It’s become the symbol of the Brazilian extreme right.”
