@schittscreekdrabbleblog word challenge: Spin
*******
“Hi, sweetheart. Patrick said you two had a fight. Are you ok?”
The compassion in Marcy’s voice reverberates through the phone, and David could (re:does) cry.
“You don’t hate me?”
“Don’t be silly! All couples argue.”
“But I was horrible! He must’ve told you……”
“I got his spin on it. The version where he’s right, and completely rational. I’m guessing there’s another side to that story?”
Her knowing amusement disables David’s (admittedly flimsy) filter. “Omigod, he threw a total tantrum!”
“You should have seen him when he wouldn’t go to bed. Although, I doubt you have that problem.”
“Marcy!”

We did it, folks. It’s Friday, and we’re rounding out our week with our final selection of works. This year’s Rare Fest comes to a close with themes of friendship, family, and love — much like the show that we’re all here to celebrate. We hope you enjoy them!
Have fun following along this week? Don’t forget to leave a kudos or comment to show our writers your appreciation!
***
Taking Care of David
[Alexis & David, Teen, 5,590]
With Patrick out of town, the last thing David needs is to be stuck in bed with the flu. They've been planning Patrick's attendance at the conference for months, there's no question of him returning to help out. But as chance would have it, Alexis is in town for a couple of weeks and reluctantly, David agrees to let Patrick ask for her help. It isn't like she's going to say 'yes' anyway...
***
Marcy's Girls
[Alexis, Marcy, & Stevie, Teen, 4,464]
Marcy is left alone with Alexis and Stevie after David has to pick Patrick up from a vendor run. Alexis and Stevie both turn to Marcy for relationship advice, and Marcy finds herself to be a substitute mother to the girls.
***
Want S’more
[Patrick/Jake/Mutt, Explicit, 3536]
Patrick goes camping and gets a crash course in survival woodworking.
***
your secret's safe with me
[Ruth/Stevie, Mature, 3,125]
Stevie hates surprises. Truly, there’s nothing she hates more. They make her extremely uncomfortable, and always make her cry, whether or not they’re good surprises. She’s terrible at planning them, too. She’s never been particularly good at keeping secrets, which seems to shock most people.
But somehow, despite all of this, Stevie has ended up dating Ruth who not only likes surprises, but also just informed her that she booked a trip to visit Schitt's Creek for her birthday. So now Stevie has to plan a surprise party for her sophisticated, big city girlfriend in a town that only has one restaurant.
Stevie enlists David's help to plan a surprise party for Ruth. It goes about as well as one would expect.
***
Best Budds
Stevie, G, 2,875]
A pre canon telling of Stevie’s relationship with the Motel over the passage of time and the lifelong effect it bestowed upon them.
***
You Miss 100% of the Tapes You Don't Play
[Patrick & Stevie, Teen, 995]
Patrick and Stevie support one another’s endeavors on two separate occasions.
***
a reason to stay
[Alexis/Twyla, G, 606]
It isn't like she's never been used, like no one's ever looked at her and seen someone they could discard. It isn't like her family, their voices raised through the mansion as they all pack up their lives, cares about her.
She shoves things in suitcases. Stavros will get her out of this; Stavros will bring her home.
Still: when she finds David's stuffie in her closet, she packs it, too.
--
Alexis has packed and unpacked her life countless times—but until Schitt's Creek, she never found a place that made her want to stay.

If you felt like yesterday got you all warmed up, we've got an outstanding Day 2 lined up for you! Time to revel in the holiday cheer!
If you’re following along, check out today’s works on our Google spreadsheet.
*❄️*
DAY 2 REVEALS
the magic number (is three)
[David/Patrick - E - 36,438]
Paul fucking Shaffer.
He was the reason David was home so early, nervously awaiting the arrival of the new piano player. He’d hoped this rift between Shaffer and his mother was enough to prompt the long overdue retirement of The Number, the gift of yuletide relief. But apparently Moira was taking it as an opportunity to breathe new life into the performance. New pianist, new arrangement, new choreography.
Enter Patrick Brewer.
or, three years of The Number.
*❄️*
you light me up like starlight
[David/Patrick - M - 5,858]
If one thing is for certain, David Rose is not in New York anymore.
Sure, he knew that, but when his boyfriend mentioned that he and his fellow band members, Ted and Twyla, as well as their manager Rachel, were heading back to their Canadian hometown for the annual holiday charity concert, he pictured a charming Toronto suburb, not the middle of fucking nowhere. There are cows out here.
Patrick and his indie band head back to their hometown to perform for the annual holiday charity concert, and David tags along, even though they are still keeping their relationship a secret.
*❄️*
Patrick B. PreK-4.
[David/Patrick, Marcy/Clint - G - 1,987]
David Rose never made crafty ornaments for his Christmas tree as a child. Can Marcy Brewer throw an ornament making night for David?
*❄️*
The Best Things in Life Are Free
[Alexis/Twyla - T - 1,760]
It's the thought that counts, right?
 *❄️*
Subway, Santas and Mild Road Rage
[David/Patrick - T - 2,345]
David and Patrick head to New Jersey for Christmas, and everything goes according to plan. No problems along the way whatsoever.
 *❄️*
Subway, Santas, and Mild Road Rage [podfic]
[David/Patrick - T - 16m:45s]
David and Patrick head to New Jersey for Christmas, and everything goes according to plan. No problems along the way whatsoever. Podfic of the same-titled fic.
*❄️*CREATORS: If your works were released today, please don't forget to update your posting date!

Snuggle
for @schittscreekdrabbleblog
Snuggle
“Mama.”
Marcy’s awake. She reaches out, touches his forehead. The nightlight illuminates wide eyes and space-pajamaed arms hugging his own chest. “Buddy.” She pulls back the covers. He's a big kid now, heavy and awkward as he scrambles to squeeze between his parents, knocking a knee into her thigh and pressing a cold foot on her shin.
“Patrick.” Clint makes room. Marcy either hears a sigh or anticipates one. She rehearses what she'll say in the morning when he says, “He’s ten. Should we worry?” I don’t know, she thinks. But she can't turn him away if he needs her.

7 sentences?
I know it's not Sunday, but I was traveling yesterday! Sorry! To make up for it, have more than seven sentences.
“You’re hiding,” comes a voice from behind him, and David spins around to find Marcy watching him knowingly, her lips slightly purple from the sangria in her cup.
“In broad daylight? In this ensemble? Hardly.”
She hums and sidles up next to him, and he squashes down the urge to make himself smaller just so he can rest his head on her shoulder. She exudes a maternal comfort that he never got enough of as a child, and now as an adult, it’s like his body is trying to make up for the lost years any time she’s within cuddling distance.
Neither of them seems to mind, though.
“You’re not wrong,” he blurts, because with that maternal comfort comes an inability to lie in the face of it apparently. “About me hiding.”
She nods and watches as her husband tries to show David’s father how to not burn a hot dog. Apparently it’s a difficult concept for Johnny Rose to grasp. She doesn’t press, though, because she’s always known that David will eventually talk, if given the time and space and safety to.

DAY FOUR REVEALS
Open arms and wide awake
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - M - 18,005]
David doesn’t know how he’s become a hugger. He hates hugging people.
He also needs eye cream.
And since his resume contains none of the receptionist skills that Stevie has (although he’s got some questions about that, and indeed what qualifications one needs to answer the phone and play Solitaire all day), well, here he is. David Rose: Professional Hugger.
The company calls them “cuddlers”, but David just can not.
*
Ruffled Feathers
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - G - 7, 219]
Sick of the media attention and hiding from the paparazzi, David thinks he has found the perfect hide-out to wait out the storm.
That is, until he sees a stranger with binoculars, looking right through his window.
*
Flat-Felled
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Marcy Brewer & Patrick Brewer - G - 2,457]
When he was 8, Patrick learned how to sew.
*
[Podfic] Flat-Felled
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Marcy Brewer & Patrick Brewer - G - 6]
As a kid, Patrick loved to sew but he quit after he was teased for having a girly hobby. Marcy tells David about Patrick’s hobby and David is determined to give Patrick the opportunity to revisit his past - whether he wants to or not.
*
From the Mixed-Up Files of The Elmdale Chronicle
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - T - 2,306]
David is an arts and culture reporter at Elmdale College's finest (only) newspaper; Patrick is the lead singer of a punk band called, improbably enough, The Thyroid Gland.
Could I make it any more obvious?
*
A Taste of Honey
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - E - 1,344]
Patrick is a beekeeper. David wants his honey.

Bargain + Blanket
For @schittscreekdrabbleblog’s words of the week
“Here, David, open the one from me next,” Marcy says, passing him a neatly wrapped box.
David opens it to reveal a homemade, knit blanket. It’s an elegant black and white pattern, soft and silky to the touch. David’s eyes start to water, throat growing thick with emotion.
“You didn’t have to—“ David tries, but Marcy cuts him off.
“But I wanted too. The yarn was a bargain, and it reminded me of you. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.”
David clears his throat. “Thank you, Marcy. I love it.”
“You’re so welcome, my sweet boy.”

For the @schittscreekdrabbleblog bonus word of the week: Blanket.
This gives me all the feels. It is exactly 100 words!
It was Thanksgiving. Patrick and Clint were watching the Sports Ball, David was bored. Marcy was off by herself, sitting by a window crocheting fervently. David padded over nervously and sat next to her rocking chair. "What are you working on?" David asked softly. "A blanket. I make them for all the nieces and nephews." "Could you…teach…me?" David asked hesitantly. Marcy's eyes got wide. "David! I would love to!" she hummed happily and pulled out some soft blue alpaca yarn with a Rose Apothecary label on it. David's dimple popped. "You always start with a slip stitch," Marcy started teaching.

@schittscreekdrabbleblog word challenge: Canvas
*******
Johnny and Moira have exchanged oversized, stilted canvas portraiture for candid family photos. When the Brewers share photos of Patrick, they proudly reciprocate.
“David’s first bike ride.”
“Alexis’ first bite of solid food.”
“David’s birthday tantrum in descent from glucose over-abundance.”
Clint and Marcy stare, replicating the look Patrick gets when he’s inexplicably befuddled.
“Oh. They’re adults. In these pictures.” Clint dumbly states the obvious as Marcy splutters, “her first solid food - was at the cafe?” Another perplexed, “oh. The birthday - Patrick’s calming David down.”
Johnny and Moira don’t know what the Brewers expected. That family is so easily confused.

They’re smack in the middle of the crush of bodies on the dance floor, pressed chest to chest, David’s arms slung over Patrick’s shoulders and Patrick’s arms around David’s waist, his fingertips inching up under David's sweater to get infinitesimally closer to him. He and David are dancing in a way that can really only be described as grinding, and his whole body is electrified with the thrill of being surrounded by gorgeous, sweaty men, while being allowed to actually touch the one in front of him wherever and however he wants.
Or, for Patrick's 35th birthday, David takes him to his first gay bar.

Helping his mom set up her concert at the Toronto Pride Fest sounded to David like a small price to pay for a weekend in the city. But that was before he was roped into joining the performance, which featured one very snippy lead singer.

“Okay, this is supposed to be fun, and instead I’m bored,” Alexis announced, hopping to her feet. “I am going to go out there and enjoy myself, and I would like for my brother to join me.”
“Ugh, fine.” David threw his hands up in exasperation. “I suppose one person can run the booth for an hour. Give me a second to–”
“Ew, not you, David,” Alexis said, grabbing Patrick’s hand and yanking him along with her out into the street.

Alexis comes back to town for the annual Pride festival, spends the day palling around with her favorite brother, and comes out. Love that journey for her.

The morning of the NYC Pride March is pretty hectic for Alexis and Twyla, Stevie and Ruth, and David and Patrick. Once it's time to join in the fun, though, everything else is confetti.

may your days be merry and bright by patrckbrewer (magnificentbanes)
[David/Patrick, Alexis & David, Marcy & David, Stevie & David - T - 6,503]
It’s five days until Christmas, one day until his in-laws arrive for their first holiday in Schitt’s Creek, and David definitely is not freaking out at all.
Okay, well maybe a little.

Bargain
with bonus blanket
for @schittscreekdrabbleblog
Bargain
The whole fabric store’s 25% off, but Patrick thinks the prices still seem high. The twenty dollars his aunt paid him for watching Jessie no longer feels like a fortune.
“I wish I was old enough for a job. Mom deserves something nice.”
“I can—” his dad starts.
“No, I’ll figure it out.” He leaves him by the zippers.
He chooses stacks of small squares, various designs in blues and creams. He’s nervous to show her. “I wanted more, enough for you to make something.”
She shakes her head, pulls him close. “Sweetie, it’s perfect. Let’s start you a quilt.”

so, the beautiful @clottedcreamfudge tagged me in wip wednesday (we’re both well aware it’s thursday/definitely friday in some parts of the world), but besties, i gotta be real - i haven’t written a goddamn word. i’m sorry. i’ve been so busy and i’m so tired and that’s not going to change for the next couple of weeks, but keep tagging me in the things because even if i only have a sentence, i’ll post it! this is a continuation of what i posted for seven sentence sunday:
“Well, I taught my boy how to share. It took some time, given the fact that he has no siblings, but I did see him give you some his french fries the other night.”
David flushes as she chuckles and pats his arm, but the smile slowly slides from his face as he watches Patrick chase a wild pitch. “The thing is - I’m not entirely sure he does.”
“Does what?”
“Know how to share. At least when it comes to Max.”
“Or you,” she whispers with a nudge. “But if I’ve learned anything about that little boy, it’s that he has plenty of love to go around.”
And it’s true. David doesn’t understand it. Maximus Cantwell is like an ever-filling Pez dispenser of affection. The only time David’s ever seen him deliberately hurt someone was when one of the people lucky enough to be loved by him hurt him first.

DAY 6 REVEALS
Luster
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - T - 16,209]
Patrick likes to compare himself to uncut gems, the ones that haven’t been molded or modified yet, the ones whose rough edges have yet to be smoothed out. The difference between them lies in the fact that the gems get polished and primed to perfection, to the best that they can be.
Meanwhile, Patrick, no matter how hard he tries, can’t get himself to that final point where everything is right. So instead, he focuses on perfecting his work. Because even if he can’t smooth out the rough edges of his life, he can smooth out the edges of a stone.
...
When David's necklace breaks, he goes to a local jeweler in Elmdale named Patrick for help.
*
There’s No Turning Back
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose - M - 7,732]
Patrick hosts a weekly drop-in choir at a local Toronto tavern. David, against his better judgement joins, sort of. Or maybe he'll just sit around drinking wine for awhile and observe, he'll see.
*
shine like silver
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Alexis Rose & David Rose, David Rose & Johnny Rose, David Rose & Moira Rose - T - 9,047]
David lets his fingers trail across the smooth black and white keys. The wood of the case and the keybed are chipped in places, and the metal of the sustain pedal is worn, but all things considered, the piano seems to be in good shape. He picks out a scale to check the tuning, his fingers operating purely on muscle memory. It has nothing on the sound of the Steinway grand that used to sit in the Rose mansion, but it’s still nice enough to make for a good anniversary present for Patrick, who recently told David that he missed playing.
“It should be in good shape. I don’t play, myself, but my daughter does,” Mr. McCreary says. “Do you play?”
David looks down and smiles sadly at the keys.
“Not anymore.”
David was a talented pianist as a kid, but gave it up because of family pressure. Several years into their marriage, Patrick helps him rediscover his love for playing.
*
Color, Breathe, Repeat
[Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Patrick Brewer & Marcy Brewer, David Rose & Marcy Brewer - Not Rated - 1,537]
Marcy sends David a care package to help him deal with stress.
*
Always Alive
[David Rose & Succulents, Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Minor or Background Relationship(s) - T - 1,594]
Then came the fateful day David noticed one of the Sempervivums and one of the Echeveria, looking a little dry and crisp, and panicked. Sempervivum might mean "always alive", but what if David had been doing something wrong and the plants died.
The Sempervivum swiftly recovered but the Echeveria did not, not liking the cool of David's air conditioned gallery.
Maybe that was when it really started- His plant passion. With one poorly purple Echeveria elegans.
