Weird Take but...I feel that Mare would be a Girl Mom
Like, she is very tomboyish and rough most of the time. But around her daughter, she would be protective and gentle.
Since Mare grew up with Ruth Barrow who fusses over her quite a lot, since she was her first daughter and a true troublemaker. Always keeping an eye on her since she learned how to walk. Telling her to stay away from this and "don't listen to your brother", is probably the first words Mare remembered from her mom.
Add to the fact that she grew up with Gisa. Although Mare was jealous of Gisa, she still loves her baby sister and adores her creations. Gisa is probably one of the few people that could actually nag Mare into doing things.
So when Coriane Barrow Calore was born. Mare was clearly over the moon and a bit scared, but those first few weeks, she never let go of Coriane, making sure she was neatly tucked on her side and warm.
As years past, Mare definitely jumped between letting Coriane do what she needs to do and fussing over her like a child. Which led to Coriane asking Mare to give her some space and let her decide for herself. Mare, in turn, kept a small distance and tried to lessen her worrying, but she still kept an eye and an ear on her daughter.
If Mare notices Coriane looking at nice clothes, simple jewelry or even a particular make up, she would save up and gift it to her on her birthday or special occasions. If Coriane shows interest in a certain activity, Mare would be there to support her. Either baseball or even afternoon fishing with Uncle Kilorn. Mare would try her best to always be there.

- So... Cal? Of all the most untalented people, you picked my brother? Mare...that's not even funny, it's pathetic. I thought you had taste... And yet I wonder how he's better than me?
- Are you so "brilliant" that you can't figure out the obvious? Kindness, sincerity, keeping your word. Unlike the Merandus' deceitful nature.
- Kindness? sincerity? From a man who preferred you to his throne?
*sighs*
- Remember, Mare. Our main difference is that I tend not to choose one thing. That's what kings do. But to sacrifice one for the good of another, a typical loser act.
.
.
.
(I'm not disparaging Cal in these passages, but Maven's arrogance through comparing himself to his brother is bliss))

Random question, I kept seeing a lot of post about Fourth Wing and noticed the main character has grey ends👀 and wields lightning👀.
Which...hmmmm kinda reminds me of someone...uhm...like..tiny...and very angry. OH! Mare Molly Barrow.
So...just wanna ask, if they ever were in a one-on-one battle. Who would win? Also, minus the dragons, Mare once dropped an aircraft (or something related to that)on Maven, but ya know. Gotta keep things fair.
Tumblr media
Violet ("violence" 🥴) Sorrengail is one of the most incompetent, idiotic, protagonists I've ever read. Her survival is 100% dependent on the fact that she is the main character. If end-of-first-book Violet and end-of-RQ Mare fought, Mare would defeat her quite easily in hand-to-hand combat. Reason A) by the end of RQ Mare had quite an efficient grasp of her powers, and her decision-making during battle was quick and effective, while it took Violet AGES to reach the most obvious conclusions even during life-or-death situations, she didn't fully understand her powers yet and got tired pretty quickly (which was fair enough, but since we're comparing the two in a hypothetical fight...). It was painful to read. B) Mare took her physical training seriously, improved upon her weaknesses, and used her petite stature to her advantage from the very beginning. Violet glass-bones Sorrengail cheated during training by poisoning her adversaries (smart! I like it!) using the intel her brother's notebook provided (privileged nepo brat using generational advantages ?😀 I hate it). In conclusion: Mare would win. It's not even a discussion.

Red Queen
By Victoria Aveyard
Tumblr media
The PREMISE, The premise of this book is what easily caught my attention but as I proceeded to actually read the book, that’s where it lost me.
Quick Plot Summary:
Mare Barrow is our main character, born into a world divided by blood, and in this world you are either a red or a silver.
The reds are the commoners who labour away all day and the silvers are the ruling class, born with supernatural powers.
But what happens when this “norm” is disrupted by none other than our main girl; Mare Molly Barrow. In a turn of events it is discovered that Mare, a red, has supernatural powers of her own much to the surprise of everyone, including Mare herself. Why and how does Mare have the abilities that she does? Is she the anomaly or could there be others?
What follows is the beginning of a revolution.
Thoughts:
The idea was there, the execution, however, was not. Initially, I was intrigued by the premise, if you have two very different groups of people; reds and silvers, how can someone like Mare exist? Why does she have the abilities that she does despite having red blood?
I felt there was potential for me to like this book, but it was the characters that really deterred me from giving anything above 2 stars.
Mare was a bland main character, she really wasn’t standing out much from any other protagonist in a YA dystopian setting which made the book overall feel less memorable. The same could actually be said for the world building in general. It was an okay book with an okay protagonist but it wasn’t doing much for all the praise it seemed to be getting on social media.
Mare makes mistakes (like anyone else does) but doesn’t seem to learn from them nor grow as a character. There’s not much character development, and whilst I am aware that this is only the first book in a series, there doesn’t seem to be much promise for her character to get any better.
The rest of the characters suffered the same fate and were just as annoying.
There's a scene in this book that lives rent free in my brain (not because it’s particularly amazing but because I don’t remember ever cringing so hard from reading a book) :
Mare and the rebel gang are all together, plotting and scheming as one does, and they start to brainstorm how their plans are going to take care of a whole legion of soldiers under Cal (the big brooding brother)’s order.
Maven chimes in with “I happen to know a girl who knows a general very well” (**hint hint, It’s Mare and the general she knows very well is Cal).
She goes off on a lil tangent of “C’mon this is Cal, the solider, the general, the prince, Cal would never betray his country, not for anything!”
………literally the following excerpt reads “I know my brother, if it comes down to it, we both know what he’ll choose”
Mare ‘not like other girls’ Barrow responds “He would never choose me”
Tumblr media
Maven shakes his head. “He will always choose you.”
Giirrllllll………..what the actual………. The way my eyes rolled so far back into my head (if that's even correct). I shut that book up and THREW it across the room.
I’m sorry but it feels like he just met you and before this dialogue she literally comes to the realisation that he loves her. How? How did this happen when they’ve only had a handful of scenes together where there was barely any build up. I can understand if he likes the girl and vice versa but love?! Bye. This book was testing me.
Mare had the personality and charisma of a blank piece of paper and I’m supposed to believe she had 3 guys head over heels in love with her.
Overall this book was very much a product of its time. Any redeeming traits were far and few and I just didn’t like it but that could just be me. If the premise seems interesting to you and you’re wanting to read it, be my guest.

Do you think Cal ever called Mare "Molly"
I once had a hc about how when they are angry to one another she would said "Tiberias" and he would call her "Molly" just to annoy her (or at least that is what I would have wanted to read in WS cof cof)
As a fandom we all forgot that our girl has a second name (thou I still don't know why 'cause it's only name in the first book)
I love the idea of them getting into a heated argument, and him looking at her and saying her full fucking name XD and her flipping around and saying YES TIBERIAS? and he just shuts his trap like a fucking fish and says nothing the rest of the day XDDD
Since Molly's her middle name I doubt he'd call her that, except to say Mare Molly Barrow under his breath like it's a curse to his general well being (because lets be honest, he didn't marry his wife cause she was fun, he married her because together they make Hell nervous) when he's told she's gallivanted to the front lines with the full intention of getting herself killed and he just had to sit there and do nothing because he's not a part of the Scarlet Guard (publicly that is) and he's not a member of Montfort's military and it would be incredibly shady if a States' general showed up on the front lines with the Montfort military. XDD Anyway, love him using her full name as a curse because sometimes she does cause serious health problems for him.

If Red Queen characters had phones
Maven: *Types like an angry grandpa. Takes 20-50min for response just to piss people off. Never texts you first (unless your name is Mare Molly Barrow)*
Mare: *constantly on it only to talk to her friends and bully polical leaders. Dose not talk to you unless you are close*
Cal: *dry texter, takes 1-2 hours to respond because he's never on his phone*
Kilorn: *Fast response with lots of personality. Check in on you weekly*
Farly: *uses email*

Maven's betrayal was not the defining moment that got me to read the WHOLE Red Queen series.
It was Mare Molly Barrow at the Bowl of Bones, telling to an impaled Rane Arven that SHE has the advantage.
Note: Full disclosure, I was not fond with Mare's character because Aveyard was trying so hard to make her so naive (like she is a thief, she most likely brushed against a few sketchy people). But eh, gotta make Maven's betrayal hit HARD.
However, when Mare was thrown at the Bowl of Bones and managed to hold her own against two Silvers using their abilities at her (make that three, cause Rane is supressing her powers from the shadows). Odds stacked against her, but with her clever thinking managed to get her powers back AND took down most of their executioners.
Right then and there, I knew I found the character that was worth finishing the whole series for.

Mare,
You've often asked me why I do this. Here's my answer.
The whole life, one way or another, is a chessboard. And I was the main pawn after the main piece. The king after the queen. Amusingly.
I am the king, but nothing in this world belongs to me. NOTHING. Except for you. I chose you. I will put you in a cage, lock you in chains, deprive you of strength and sleep, I will do everything to make you stay with me. I don't know how to be different. Power and authority. This is my essence, of which I'm composed. Monster, beast, tyrant, whatever you want to call it. But I'm doing it. Not the whisper of Merandus in my head. Me.
I have to fight for the only light in my endless darkness. I put my life on the line and I have no right to make a mistake. You're mine. I decided so. Sorry.
