Artur and Mareena (YJ Redux)

You may have remembered in the comics of Aquaman's children from versions in the TV series such as Young Justice and Batman Beyond. Though it didn't explore much of their sibling relationship. Both siblings have pale blonde hair and blue eyes like their own father, Aquaman.

What if they are born as twins in the Redux versions? In the Young Justice Redux version. Artur and Mareena are twins and the prince and princess of Atlantis. Let's have a look at their own personalities and perspectives.

Artur is the firstborn and heir to the throne of Atlantis. Being the crown prince, Arthur began studying at the age of 7 about the historical articles of his ancestors. He is also interested in finding out more about the golden age of Earth where the first battle against Darkseid was taken place. Although he is a skilled combatant, Artur is more focused on keeping the peace between land and sea and only fight when necessary. His relationship with his twin sister, Mareena, is much like a typical brother-sister relationship. He gets protective of Mareena for every rebellious move she makes, such as sneaking to the surface to explore more. And sometimes gets reluctantly dragged into any sorts of trouble by his sister. And this worries Artur of how big the rebellious streak in his sister is that he has to prevent her from getting hurt. But he loves her, nonetheless. As he grew up, Arthur became much more of a responsible teenager that he didn't want to have any fun for the sake of his responsibilities, but that was the more reason his sister tried to get him to get out a bit more. Being in the Titans (a future generations of teenage heroes), Artur is leader of the team seeing his comrades as equals, trying to keep the team together.

Mareena is second-in-line to the throne, and with that, she tries to do something to serve if she isn't to take the throne. Despite her brother being the heir, her family sees potential in her, and that she just has to find out more for herself. She has inherit her rebellious streak from her paternal grandmother, Queen Atlanna, of her love for adventure. Fighting pirates and assassins that dared to hunt down her people. She also participated in Combat Tournaments using her grandmother's trident. This however began to cause rumors to spread that Mareena might one day replace Artur as the heir (though Artur didn't let those rumors get in the way, as he didn't mind, not wanting his sister to be jealous). Unlike her older twin brother, Mareena has a love for battle, and trained each day, stronger than Artur. But because Mareena and Arthur were direct descendants of the Royal House of Xebel through their mother, Mera, Mareena is to take the throne of Xebel according to the will of her maternal grandfather, King Ryus Nereus, which will make her the future queen, and furthering solidifying the alliance and ties between Atlantis and Xebel. Which is something their parents will not tell yet until she comes of age.

Despite the twins (in the future) will one day rule the separate kingdoms, Artur and Mareena will still work together to protect Earth.

Being the children of Aquaman, they were also born to defend the land and sea since their ancestry of humans and atlanteans alike. Artur mostly interacts with his mother, Queen Mera, when she was teaching him the ways to rule the kingdom since his father was busy with his duties as a member of the Justice League. But father and son still get along well as they tried to make time to spend together as family.

But meanwhile, being a princess of the royal household, Mareena didn't want to be born with just a title of royalty. Because of this, the twins' father, King Orin, felt bad thay Mareena felt purposeless, and decided to give her the freedom to choose, since the queens and princesses of the past didn't have the same thing given the customs, and Orin/Arthur Curry Sr. wanted to change things for his family by not repeating the same mistakes as his forefathers.

So Mareena was told the stories of heroes and villains of the past. Inspiring her to become a combatant soldier for the Atlantean Militia. To aid her brother when he becomes king in the future. And because of those stories, Mareena and her father bonded.

It took Aquaman and Mera some time to think about letting their children go to school (on land) to learn about the outside world, and fir them to gain the independence necessary. At the ages of 14, the twins were allowed to go to a public high school and avoid revealing their statuses of being members of the royal family. While also keeping their Atlantean traits a secret.

Artur was usually reserved, but (unintentionally) became popular with the female students with academics and good looks and muscular appearance. But doesn't like fighting, but only does so to intervene such chaos. Artur is also part of a debate team to gain political skills and win for 3 years. Mareena on the other hand was top on the class of Physical Education, the boys got attracted to her, only for her brother to keep her away from them.

When in Atlantis, during ceremonies of tournaments, King Orin, Queen Mera, Prince Artur and Princess Mareena share the throneroom. The throne has four seats, symbolizing a family unity. To show how family mattered, and not royal titles.

And last we’ve got a big sketch page update:

Shayne and Rex I’ve talked about before, but at this point they’re fully established as the new Changeling (or Menagerie? idk) and Warhawk

Micron is Ronald Rusch, son of Jason Rusch and successor to Ryan Choi and Rhonda Pineda, though he chose not to use the name “Atom” for personal reasons. Micron never had a name in canon, and from Sara Stewart’s entry, you can guess I like unusual legacy cases, so the son of Firestorm is the Atom Beyond.

Pivoting off that, Phoebus is a Kingdom Come character I just transferred over. They also don’t have a canon identity beyond being a successor to Firestorm, and I uh...don’t actually have a name for them either, but I think I might play up a visual link to sentai and have them as either Japanese or someone of Japanese descent?

Alloy is another lift from Kingdom Come, and not much of a clear figure here, but their core is Platinum since Tina is the leader of the Metal Men in the headverse

Batwoman is Elainna Grayson, returned to her own time after spending a year or so in the “modern day” as headverse!Red X. Her suit is almost identical to Terry’s and they mostly get along, but Elainna is pulling influence from Ryan Wilder instead of Jace Fox, though eventually everyone comes together under Bella Real as a new Bat-Family.

Nissa is still Batgirl Beyond, but here she’s also Luke Fox’s daughter. Unlike the other Bats of this era, Nissa’s suit is much less advanced, being more in like with Jace’s suit during his earliest period of activity.

The Red Hood is [redacted]...nah, I’m just kidding, he’s Thomas Grayson. Elainna’s brother, Tom is from yet another alternate future (the same one as Sahar, actually) in canon, here he co-exists with his siblings but takes after his uncle, Jason. 

Danica, Avia, Mareena, and Inque round out this batch. Danica and Mareena are pretty much direct lifts, but I’m reworking Mareena’s look to reflect a more Momoa-adjacent aesthetic. Avia is based on the Kingdom Come version and fills the canon!Barda’s spot on the JLU, since the New Gods have...well, that’s for another time.

Last is Inque, Deanna Clay. In canon, Deanna is Inque’s daughter, which is still the case here, but now the experiment destabilize her body so severely, she can only survive as a symbiotic suit for someone else. Deanna ends up functioning as Terry’s archnemesis in a lot of regards here. Blight’s still the big bad, but between the changes to Terry’s suit and Inque’s backstory, they play off each other in a Spider-Man/Venom sort of dynamic. Deanna, like Terry, is also of Rhelasian descent, and the estranged biological child of a father she never knew.

Biography:

Born to the former king of Atlantis, Orin and current ruler of Atlantis, Mera. Her older brother, Arthur would look after her. After Mareena's birth, her maternal grandfather, King Ryus Nereus, would name Mareena as his heir to the throne of Xebel, since he stripped Hila of her status as heir due to her crimes against her own family. Meaning she will ascend to the throne as the future Queen once she came of age.

Mareena would not have any memories of her father due to Orin having left for the Battle of Apokolips, leaving Mareena to grow up without her father, and her memories of him would be vague. And she help her mother and brother rule Atlantis.

Although at a young age, Mareena has excelled using sorcery at the age of 5 without the need of a teacher.

Mareena was present at the Crown Ascension Ceremony, where her older brother would be named Crown Prince of Atlantis. However, the ceremony was interrupted by her maternal aunt, Hila when she gathered her forces to usurped the throne of Poseidonis. Mera forced her children to escape.

Now 11, Kaldur'ram, her father's former protege, would teach her combat to prepare her to defend herself. Though Artur opposes that she was too young to fight. Mareena would reply that she is just as strong as he is. And would remind him that he is her brother, not her father. Leaving her older brother, upset at those words. In the surface, Mareena was given an alias, Maria Curry.

Whenever her mentor and teacher would be absent, Mareena was to train with the Amazons, under the tutelage of Donna, the current queen of the Amazons and the 2nd Wonder Woman after her sister went missing in Apokolips. Gaining the respect from the warriors of Themyscira, as well as becoming a friend of the amazons.

Later, when her brother leads the Titans to space to combat against the Female Furies from kidnapping any more children, Arthur ordered her sister to stay behind. Knowing she would handle leading both Atlantis and Xebel forces. Wishing her the best before heading off. Mareena would then serve as regent in her brother's place until he returns.

Personality:

Though currently a preteen, Mareena is shown to be mentally matured than the rest of the main characters. Being born of royalty, her main focus was on the politics in Atlantis.

Being renamed, Maria Curry for her surface name, it was hard for the Atlantean princess to get used to being called that, due to being on the run.

Mareena has yet to know her father, Orin, due to only being a toddler when he disappeared. However, Mareena cared for her older brother, as one of the family members she had left since the war began. Although she would get fed up with her brother being overprotective of her.

And Mareena would be stubborn enough to go against his orders in order to fight back against Apokolips. Mareena, as Aquagirl, would take charge of the Atlantean Resistance in her brother's absence. Developing leadership at such a young age.

Although she is studious and works hard to become the future Queen of Xebel, Mareena is also said to be more free-spirited. A trait she inherited from her paternal grandmother, the late Queen Atlanna. And due to fighting capabilities and pride, Mareena is believed to be a reincarnation of her grandmother. As well her resemblance towards her. Though she never met her deceased grandmother, Mareena respected her hearing stories from her parents, implying that she was also aware of her human lineage through her father and paternal grandfather.
