Remember how in the last 2 pages of North & South Margaret just melted and hid her face on Mr Thornton's shoulder and he put her arms around his neck and showed her the roses from her old house which he kept treasured up in his pocket book to remind him of her

Jane Austen: and here we have the love interest. He might have some issues, but once you get to know him, he's a great guy. Good looking, heart of gold, the works.
Charlotte Brontë: get ready for the weirdest man you have ever met.

One of my favorite things about John Thornton, and something that leaves an impression on me whenever I think of North and South, was that he took Margaret's emotional well-being incredibly seriously, and in fact, was one of the ONLY characters who cared about her emotional well-being. She took it upon herself to be the emotional support for not only her whole family but to everyone else when needed, and she had to bear her own emotions all to herself. In turn, John frequently took it upon himself to look out for her during her especially difficult times - like her parent's deaths, and did things to show he cared even without her being aware of it (attending her mom's funerals and staying the background to not draw attention to himself - he just wanted to be there for her support) Like John regularly calls himself hard, uncouth, but this man had so much heart and cared so deeply.

It means so much to me that Margaret gets to have sometime to recover at the end of North and South. After all the loss she’s experienced, to have time to be quiet and put everything in its place *before* the final reunion and resolution to the romance.
It’s something that is often missing from more modern drama/romance books - everything is so fast and you don’t see the recovery or time to rest.
I don’t know where I’m going with this, it’s just good to see Margaret, our main character (for all that we get Thornton’s pov, the book was originally named Margaret Hale for a reason) take time to tend to her emotional health and assert her own independence, showing that outside of any romantic relationship, she’ll be all right.

"Mr Thornton has been admiring our newly redecorated rooms, Maria." "Oh. Yes, Mr Thornton. Well, there wasn't a great deal of choice, but these papers are of a similar shade to our drawing room in Helston. But not quite." "Well, on behalf of Milton taste, I'm glad we've almost passed muster."
