A Psicologia da cegueira voluntária. EF Schumacher elegantemente escreveu em seu livro: “Tudo pode ser visto diretamente, exceto através dos olhos pelo qual vemos”. O que obscurece essas incógnitas transformadoras da visão são os nossos preconceitos inconscientes que mesmo bem intencionados, podem nos iludir. Na obra Cegueira voluntária: Por que ignoramos o óbvio mesmo que estejamos em risco, a empreendedora e autora Margaret Hefferman examina os mecanismos cognitivos e emocionais pelos quais permanecemos “cegos” em situações nas quais deveríamos saber da verdade e agir, mas em vez disso fechamos os olhos para a verdade porque isso nos faz sentirmos melhor. Esse processo, na maioria das vezes, ocorre inconscientemente, no entanto, existem casos em que sabemos conscientemente a verdade e preferimos escondê-la de nós mesmos. Margaret argumenta que “quanto mais nos concentramos, mais deixaremos passar alguma coisa”. A atenção é um discriminador intencional e sem remorso. Segundo Margaret o conceito de cegueira voluntária vem da lei e provém de uma legislatura do séc XIX. Esse conceito abrange a ideia contra-intuitiva de que você é o responsável pela causa e efeito, pois “se você tinha os recursos para saber o que estava acontecendo e deveria saber o que estava acontecendo, mas mesmo assim preferiu fechar os olhos para a verdade, a culpa é sua”. Margaret diz que esse conceito engloba várias esferas de nossas vidas e felizmente somos capazes de fazer algo a respeito – como indivíduos, organizações ou nação – precisamos abrir bem os olhos antes de entrar em situações perigosas que no final irão gerar aquela exclamação inevitável: Como eu pude ser tão cego?
