IASIP promo "Going Back to Philly" (2009) for season 4
Source
> "Going Back to Philly" by Jeru da Damaja > Directed by Fred Savage, who did 18 episodes from season 3 to 5 as well as the Christmas episode, so I guess he was just directed a lot of their stuff around this time. > Possibly produced by a creative/marketing company called SLAQR which seems to have worked on many, many shows from their website, but were also supposedly founded in 2010 before this promo was made... What.
This is a parody of "Going Back to Cali" (1988) by LL Cool J. If you've seen the music video for that song, this promo makes a lot more sense. I mean, there's still no explanation for some things, but that's just Sunny.
And they definitely thought they could use Glenn's titties to get more eyeballs on the show.

I do wonder if sleeping with Margaret McPoyle again in "Trial of the Century" was one the final straws for Mac coming out of the closet. That seems like an especially unpleasant experience.

I wanted to dig into the Sunny the 13th promos a little bit, because I think they're a really great subversion of expectations that a lot of people have about Always Sunny and Dennis' character in general.
Looking at the comments on various platforms from around the promos were released, a good number of people seem to have taken the promos as if Dennis has "finally snapped" and is going to kill the gang. He is, after all, wielding an axe, wearing a slasher-esque hockey mask, and appears to be threatening harm in all of the promotional images.
But in the video promos, he's more akin to a ghost than a slasher villain, trying and failing to get the gang's attention, for the seven minute Paramormal Paddy's promo. Several times over the course of the promo, he is actively scared by the things happening in the bar, wheras the rest of the gang barely even acknowledges it.
He's the one being pursued in all of the promos, not the other way around. Pursued by his friends' parents, pursued by the Waitress, pursued by Margaret McPoyle. In Dennis' Double Life, he tries to own up to his behaviour and commits to becoming a father, but in doing so, he is running away from his old life, and it all still follows him.
If listening to the conversations that the gang is having, you can also clearly hear them discussing whether or not Dennis actually killed Maureen. Dennis isn't technically there to defend himself, but the general consensus is that he did (even though Dennis originally denies any involvement, and his name was cleared).
In the production script for The Gang Gets New Wheels, they assume Dennis has killed Mandy and Brian Jr. and that is why he's come back to Philadelphia and decided to raise his son "from a distance". Given the gang's perception of him, and his apparent track record with killing Maureen, this would be a fair assumption, but not once does he raise his axe at them, or even make any move to threaten them at all.
In both the Ponderosa Wedding Massacre and Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer, Dennis' secrecy and suspicious behaviour stems from not wanting others to know that he had sex with Maureen. I don't believe he killed her, and I don't believe he killed Mandy and their son either. I also don't believe he'd kill the gang. Besides, as we know from Mac is a Serial Killer, axes are too messy.
At the very end of the promo, Dennis walks toward the gang with his axe lowered, and Dee turns around to look at him, implying that they knew he was there the entire time. This aligns with their lack of interest in his absence in The Gang Gets New Wheels.
Throughout the promo, he's seen sitting at the bar alone, in one of the booths, rolling across the floor in the chair from the back office, watching them from afar, staring into the camera. He's bored. He's lonely. He's being left out of the gang's conversations. This can easily be seen as a representation of how he felt in North Dakota.
So of course he's wearing a mask, leaning into their perception of him as a psychotic killer, it's easier than being honest and vulnerable. Better than telling them that he came back because he missed them.

Still so funny that the fandom somehow interpreted “Johnny doesn’t love you Johnny doesn’t even like you” as “I made up a persona to flirt with you because I’m in love with you” yall cray cray I love ya
Yeah of course it was weird and sexual bc everything with Dennis is weird and sexual he doesn’t know how to do things without making them weird and sexual but he’s literally like that with every single thing he does in every area of his life wbk that Dennis wants to fuck or has fucked Mac for years so idk why people randomly interpreted that one thing he did to Mac as him being in love with him when it was literally just another cruel manipulation game. And the saddest part is he was willing to let it go on for God knows how long he was willing to let this man that he supposedly “loves” according to yall stay being obsessed and in love with a man who he could never actually be with bc he doesn’t exist just in order to get mac out the apartment sometimes (literally so many easier and kinder ways of achieving that but that’s what Dennis is like he doesn’t get how to do things without making them a cruel game) and the only reason he revealed the truth was bc mac made the comment suggesting Johnny loves him and Dennis pride and ego couldn’t even let him have that. Why? He’s told Dee he loves her to manipulate her before why couldn’t he just let mac believe “Johnny” loves him just to keep the facade going longer? It was literally like in murder cases when the detectives get a detail wrong which leads to the murderer confessing to what actually happened simply bc they’re such narcissists and need to be acknowledged for what they actually did rather than a lie even if it means giving themselves away. So he was cruel enough to let mac fall for this false romance and then cruel enough to rip it away without warning just bc he couldn’t stand the thought of mac thinking he was in love with him even if it was just through a persona. I wish I could see what u guys see u know I love gay sex in the butt but every Johnny post I see I’m just like mmm that’s rly not what happened there. I’m not saying Dennis doesn’t have complicated feelings towards Mac I thought it was interesting that the CEO of tsuma looked like an older version of him (same hairstyle and Hawaiian shirt) and Dennis then literally ate his heart out. But the Johnny situation was imo weird and unnecessarily sexually charged but not at all indicative of anything romantic on Dennis’ end, he’s seduced plenty of people for his own gain, you gonna tell me he’s in love with Margaret mcpoyle now?

I had a thought about Risk E. Rat’s. I think I saw someone on tumblr theorise recently that Leo’s appearance probably isn’t for a Mac flashback for reasons I don’t remember. I was just thinking about how Mac said in Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang that he wants something to pass down to his kids. what if that was foreshadowing, and he’s going to discover that he already had a kid years ago when he was still banging chicks? argument against: 1. would be a rehash of Charlie Wants an Abortion, 2. if they want to do gang/fatherhood stories they’ve already got Brian Jr and have barely tapped that well, and 3. not sure that Rob + Kaitlin would want to put their kid into a recurring role and expose their kid to the industry? argument for: maybe it would be interesting to see the difference between dad Mac vs dad Dennis. Mac’s kid would be older and that could be an interesting dynamic. what if because he hasn’t been around, his kid pushes Mac away, just like his parents did to him? or maybe Mac would be Lutheresquely distant, just like he was with Uncle Donald. also I can totally see Mac and Dennis arguing because Mac adds “as a father…” to his identity spiel and Dennis knows he knows more about fatherhood than Mac.
just throwing this out to sunnyblr idk
Hmmm interesting. Tbh I do think at this point he’s just ‘kid Mac fights at the arcade’ because that’s pretty funny in terms of the casting-situation. But you bring up some interesting points/plots.
Frank is a dad, duh; Dennis has a kid; Charlie had a kid scare/plot; Dee gave birth to a kid; Mac is the only member of the gang without some kind of kid plot or connection, and the one who seems most inclined to actually want a family (and the biggest anti-condom of them all)
IF he were Mac’s kid, it would be a weird timing issue as well, since Leo is only 12-ish, he was born circa-S8. Axel was who Kaitlin was pregnant with in S6, and I believe that Halloween party was the last time we saw/heard about Mac having sex with a woman. Since then… gay Mac rules.
SO if Leo’s character was his kid they’d either have to age him up a little (kinda doubt) or they’d backtrack and say he was still sleeping with women in Season 7/8, which I’m not a major fan of, or he’s Margaret McPoyles kid LMAO.
I think the biggest indicator to helping us figure this out is why is it Leo? Did they need someone who look familial, or did he just want to try acting? I am thinking it might just be the latter post-Wrexham filming and Rob sharing that he’s been showing some episodes to the kids.
I think it’ll be an unrelated character, but probs have some fun hints/meta related to the casting. And you know who looks just as much like Leo as Rob does? Kaitlin. Damn that child is a little McElhenney/Olson clone! And we know his character interacts with Frank. It would be pretty cute/funny if Frank looked at him and was like ‘why the shit do you look just like my daughter as a kid?’
Past that, if he isn’t part of a flashback/playing young Mac, I don’t really want him to be related to the Gang, tbh. I think Mac ‘wants’ to be a dad, but realistically he would need to be a co-parent to Brian Jr. because he’d absolutely just get along with his kid like a child, fights and contributing to chaos and throwing tantrums and all until they just burn off and he’s ‘over’ being a dad and moves on. Mac is a massive child, and I love that about him, and I think that’s the plot we’ll get, seeing him be a kid next to a kid and coming across as the bigger child

Thursday, 11:40 a.m.
(Paddy's Pub, interior. Mac and Dee are staring at a booth with beers in their hand. Dennis is sitting in the booth, looking like he was run over by a truck, wearing boxers and a Philadelphia Flyers "Gritty" mask.)
Mac: Give him your beer, Dee. He's gotta be hungry and thirsty and you know what they say! Beer is liquid bread.
Dee: Hell no, you give him your beer. Not my fault the McPoyle Brothers found him with Margaret and tortured him for a year."
Mac: Yeah, about that. Wouldn't you think sleeping with Margaret McPoyle would be punishment enough?
(Enter Charlie and Frank, covered with sewage, carrying a burlap sack.)
(Mac to Dee) Well if that stench doesn't kill his appetite I don't know what will. I just thought a beer would be the easiest thing to feed him. C'mon, Dee, feed Dennis. It's not like he can eat on his own."
(Dee to Charlie) Feeding Dennis seems like Charlie-work to me.
Charlie: Hell no, I was the one who found him in the sub-basement under the McPoyle's building. That was gross enough.
Dee: Well we can't just let him starve.
(Dennis groans)
(Frank reaches into the sack.). Here's something to cheer him up. (Pulls out the Crimson Behelit.)
Dee: What the FUCK is that?
Frank: I dunno, but ain't it jacked up? Hey Dennis, looks like you without that Gritty mask on. Here. You take it. (Frank drops the cord around Dennis's neck.). Anyway, almost post time at the race track, let's go.
Dee: Well who's gonna look after Dennis?
(Charlie goes to the bar, pours a pint, sticks a straw in it and puts in it front of Dennis.). Problem solved. Dennis can take care of himself, can't you, Dennis?
(Dennis groans. The Gang turns their back on him, leaving the bar while ad-libbing about horses. Dennis looks down at the Crimson Behelit hanging at his chest.)
