My thoughts on the #Archetypes podcast episode on The Demystification of Dragon Lady with #MargaretCho & #LisaLing (Anna May Wong is discussed for a few minutes…) Preface: I haven’t listened to previous episodes of Archetypes so I don’t have any biases against the host, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. However, I have lived experience as an Asian American woman, and have taken Asian American history courses in the past. A lot of the information presented in this episode is not new nor surprising to me. Being a 46 minute episode, I wasn’t expecting a comprehensive deep dive on this topic - “dragon ladies” and the over sexualization/fetishization of Asian women. BUT - I felt this episode was just at the surface level - something that could’ve been explored more -- like a multi-part episode arc. I do applaud addressing this topic. (I could relate to the part about being approached for sexual favors in exchange for money just because I happen to be Asian. Unfortunate, as it is.) On the #AnnaMayWong segment: While discussing the dragon lady archetype, they bring up silent film actress, Anna May Wong. They go over a brief biography: Chinese American from LA’s Chinatown and couldn’t get any roles in America. (I’m guessing they’re referring to her career in the 20s.) A clip of Daughter of the Dragon is played, which is technically a film from 1931. Margaret Cho then mentions that she first saw it in her teens. My commentary: I wished that they had offered some insights on AMW. That she fought racism and was an activist. That she sought roles in the late 30s that portrayed Asian Americans in a positive light; i.e. Daughter of Shanghai. That she wasn’t a victim. Her story isn’t one of tragedy. It’s one of resilience. The fabulous @margaretcho is coming to #Boston with her new comedy tour, Live & LIVID. Tickets went on sale this past Friday so move fast and pray she will add a second show. #MargaretCho
Last week Margaret Cho announced her new tour, Live and LIVID. The 20+ city tour starts in early March but doesn’t arrive in Boston until Thursday, April 13th at The Wilbur Theater in Boston’s Theater District.
Tickets went on sale December 9th so don’t delay in making plans, because she will sell out! Hopefully she will add a second show for that evening. This would make for a fantastic night…

But is this kink subculture phenomenon all it's cracked up to be? While some find it helpful & validating, many say it’s othering, stigmatizing, and normalizes red-flag behavior disguised as “kink.”

Joe Zarate-Sanderlin Bio
"Joe Zarate-Sanderlin, an Assigned Male at Birth non-binary person (pronouns: they/them/theirs), came of age in the New York City kink scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s and they have connections in the Boston and San Francisco kink communities. They are a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in San Francisco where they specialize in working with gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity. They teach several courses at Golden Gate University and were recognized as an Outstanding Adjunct Professor for 2022. They provide training and consultation regarding Talking to Clients about Sex, Gender in Psychotherapy, Open Relationships, BDSM Relationships, and other topics. In addition to private practice, their clinical experience includes being supervised by Dossie Easton for two and half years plus volunteering at a Catholic school for three years, a continuation high school for one year, and at a low-fee clinic for four years. They worked for the Burning Man Emergency Services Department for ten years, both in the Nevada desert and in the streets of San Francisco. In their spare time, they ski, coach and referee soccer, brew kombucha, dance to 80s music, and parent elementary-aged old twins."
