Summary: You’re bored on a hot day, your friends are busy, but your mon doesn’t know that. Why not visit Carl who’s probably reading, or doing something a littleee different, won’t hurt to peak. 500 words
It was freezing. Your mom insisted you kept the air conditioner on 46 degrees, instead of turning on the fan in her room. It wasn’t cold outside, actually the complete opposite. You glanced out your window seeing your alexandria neighbors sweating and playing around with water balloons. All of your friends were busy. Well not all of them. Carl was probably reading or playing with Judith.
You climbed off of your bed, and changed into a brandy melville set, one with hearts, that you were sure he’d like. It was a little wrinkly but you didn’t have time to pay mind to that. You looked in the mirror, brushing your hair back and shifting your top around to show a little cleavage.
“Mom!” you called out from the hallway.
“Yes y/n?” she replied from the living room
You swiftly walked in to see her reading peacefully, with her granny glasses pushed slightly down her nose.
“I’m gonna go to my friends house for a little, is that okay?”
“Which friend?” she said, turning to see you.
“Mariam” you lied.
“That’s fine. Oh! Can you take this..hold on” she got up and brought out a book from the shelf “Give her mother this, and tell her it was amazing”
She handed you a copy of Animal farm by George Orwell.
“Got it! See you later”
You figured you would just stop by Mariams house after you left Carls’.
Once at his door, you knocked, in a special pattern only you two knew.
To your surprise the door opened after only a few moments.
“Oh y/n hello.” Michonne smiled.
“Hi Michonne, is Carl home..or?”
“Yeah he’s upstairs, come on in” she said cracking the door open furthur.
You walked in, breathing in the smell of pinecones that Carl and Rick carried around, which they passed onto Michonne. It was always so comforting.
You made your way up the staircase and down the hall, stepping over various things like, Judith's toys, her laundry, boxes, and laundry. You chuckled to yourself thinking about much you knew Carl hated this mess, though the rest of the house was relatively clean. You tripped over a lego truck and ended up on your knee in front of Carls room.
You quickly got back up onto your feet, realizing you forgot to take off your slides at the door, you kicked them off, then you heard something. At first you thought it was your slides hitting the floor, but then you heard it again. It was almost like..heavy breathing. Not normal heavy breathing, like erotic.
You froze for a second not knowing what to do. You weren’t sure if you were even right about what you were hearing. You leant up against the door, pressing your ear to it. You heard the noise nice and clear now.
Carl was moaning, almost whimpering. You weren’t sure what to do, obviously you hadn’t been in this situation before. You were sure he’d thought you had tons of experience after he found out you are a but older, you could tell. But you only had some.
After a few more seconds of contemplating, you looked around to see if anyone was coming then knocked on his bedroom door.
Immediately you heard rustling but you took the initiative to just open the door right away. He was sitting on his bed with a comic in hand and pillow across his lap, of course.
You turned your back to him, twisting the lock on his doorknob. “Hey Carl! What are ***you*** up too?”
He sat there looking baffled, eyeing you from head to toe. “Oh nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Well reading” he smiled, lifting up the comic.
You gave him a suspicious look then noticed something you recognized on the floor. You picked it up and realized it was a Polaroid of you. It was slightly wrinkled and somehow worn out, which makes you think he put it to great use. In it, you were wearing a bikini and smiling in front of a lake you and Carl found and swam in.
“Aw this is such a cute picture” You grabbed his arm and squeezed as you said that.
“It-it is- um a nice picture” He blushed heavily.
Your smile turned into a smirk as your attention went back to the pillow still residing on his lap.
“What's this for?” You asked even though you knew the answer well.
“Nothing,” he said once again.
“Really? I think you were doing something…something with this picture” you smiled, leaning down to match his level.
“I’m sorry- I just, I don’t know why-“ He sighed looking genuinely apologetic, and..cute.
“No Carl it’s okay. I can help you. Let me help you.”
You were now eye to eye with him, basically speaking your words into his mouth.
He crashed his lips onto yours eagerly. His hands roamed across your ass and your waist roughly, almost like he was impatient for whatever you had planned. His lips taste like cheap lip balm, and you’re sure yours tastes like cherry gloss.
You wanted to take it slow, but that was impossible at this point, lust filled the air, so that idea got lost.
You moved your hand down to his crotch and massaged swiftly. His lips quivered against yours, being unable to kiss in rhythm. He thrusted up into your hand, making a soft and warm feeling erupt in your stomach.
You pulled away and began undressing. You both hurriedly rid of your clothes, and once completely naked, you were on top of him, with his back leaning against the bedframe.
You dragged your bare cunt against his dick, earning a low moan from him. His face, and the feelings were making you turn blush pink. You continued your motions, he grabbed your thighs as he looked into your eyes.
“You look so pretty like this” he whispered
“Thank you…have you ever done this before?” you asked, now regaining your senses.
He stayed silent for a second, “No. Is that okay?”
“That’s definitely okay.”
“What do you want me to do?” he asked
“Don’t worry baby I’ll do the work” you said grinning
You took a hold of his dick and pumped it a couple of times before lining it up with your slit.
“Are you ready?”
He nodded, and you sunk down onto him. You bit your lip to contain the moan from slipping from your lips. His eyes were shut, completely taking in the bliss.
You waited a few seconds before you started moving back and forth. He was bigger than you expected, he reached far within you, places no one else has ever reached. He began to kiss your neck surprisingly, and it just added to the sensation by ten times.
You took his lips to yours while you tried to focus a little more on his pleasure. He was already a mess, trying to keep quiet by groaning against your skin.
You began to try and see what he reacted best too. First you lifted yourself up a little and sunk back down, seeing his face twist up made you smile without even realizing. Then you rocked your hips in circles, and then bounced up and down rhythmically.
You could tell this was all too much for him, but he liked it that way. You brought his hand up to your chest, letting him massage it. He was already lost in the clouds but this basically brought him to god. You giggled lightly at his vocal expressions.
You felt that sweet euphoric feeling deep in your abdomen and sped up your movements.
“God Carl….do you like it?” you moaned
“Yes…” his eyebrows furrowed. He was just as close as you “Kiss me again”
He did not have to tell you twice. You attached your lips once again. You didn’t even have time to warn him before you came. The orgasm sent goosebumps to every inch of your skin, while you saw stars. You moaned into his mouth, just as he did. You felt him throbbing mid-orgasm before he came deep into you.
You got off of him after the pleasure wore away. Both of you huffed in the comfortable silence.
“That was amazing,” he said looking far into your eyes.
“Really?” you crawled up to his spot and placed a soft kiss against his cheek. His eyes traced your face as his hands graced your hair.
“Really.”
A/n!!
I’m too tired to even write this part aghhh! Sorry I’ve MIA. I didn’t expect this past weekend to be so crazy. I won’t go into detail but I think someone was praying on my downfall HAHAH. anyway hoped you enjoyed this. I will be posting kinktober day three tomorrow to make up and day 4-5-6 will be posted on regular schedule, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday 8:30pm Pacific time. Have a nice night or day idk hahahhhgg

every single book I read in 2022. all 129 of them.
jesus christ
let's start with the best of the best; everything else will get listed beneath the read more because I'm not an animal. even just picking out my favorites is honestly probably going to get pretty lengthy, even though I'm trying to keep the synopses short.
batmanisagatewaydrug's noteworthy books of 2022
Complaint! (Sara Ahmed, 2021) - necessary for anyone doing diversity work in higher education, tbh
America is Not the Heart (Elaine Castillo, 2018) - achingly gorgeous novel of heartbreak and healing.
The School for Good Mothers (Jessamine Chan, 2022) - honestly? I feel very good calling this my favorite book of the entire year. sensitive, smart, chilling.
Black Feminist Thought (Patricia Hill Collins, 1990) - truly ashamed to say I didn't read this sooner. Collins' clear-eyed analysis remains crazily spot-on 30+ years later.
Hurts So Good: The Science and Pleasure of Pain on Purpose (Leigh Cowart, 2021) - I read this book so early in 2022 and literally have not stopped thinking about it since.
Batman: King Tut's Tomb (Nunzio DeFillippis, Christina Weir, José Luis García-López, and Kevin Nowlan, 2009) - dare I say the most fun I had with a comic all year.
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty (Akwaeke Emezi, 2022) - a romance unlike any other. queer, fun, sexy, bold as hell, and joyfully life-affirming.
The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (Mariana Enríquez, trans. Megan McDowell, 2021) - DELICIOUSLY creepy short stories that will lurk in your brain forever.
Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century (Kim Fu, 2022) - if a more perfect short story collection exists I am yet to find it.
The World We Make (N.K. Jemisin, 2022) - I normally hesitate to include sequels on a list like this, but god DAMN Jemisin is the queen of modern spec fic for a reason.
We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (Mariame Kaba, edited by Tamara K. Nopper, 2021) - excellent collection of Kaba's abolitionist writings, drawing on years of organizing experience and wisdom.
Jade City (Fonda Lee, 2017) - look out! new favorite doorstopper fantasy series alert!
Priestdaddy (Patricia Lockwood, 2017) - about the best damn memoir I've ever read. heartbreaking and hysterical in turns, poetry the whole way through.
Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory (Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, 1996 and 1999) - it's always so exciting when something much-hyped lives up to the hype in every way. Batman at his grim and moody Batmaniest with a Gotham that’s deliciously bleak.
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel, 2014) - I didn't think I'd like this book much at all, then ended up proposing on the second date. oops!
I'm Glad My Mom Died (Jennette McCurdy, 2022) - you will also be glad McCurdy's mom died, and also experience every other known human emotion along the way.
Kaikeyi (Vaishnavi Patel, 2022) - SPLENDID mythology retelling + political fantasy.
My Body (Emily Ratajkowski, 2022) - haunting haunting haunting personal essays about Ratajkowski's life as a model and subsequent alienation from her own body.
Batman: Bruce Wayne, Murderer? (Greg Rucka et al, 2002) - genuinely what can I say I'm a messy bitch and I love when the Bats are having a terrible time.
The Batman Adventures Vol. 2 #1-17 (created by Dan Slott, Ty Templeton, Rick Burchett, Terry Beatty, and Bruce Timm, 2003) - a continuation of the Batman: The Animated Series universe that frankly just fucking rules.
Little Rabbit (Alyssa Songsiridej, 2022) - a potent and erotic adult coming of age story.
The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-First Century (Amia Srinivasan, 2021) - thorny, difficult, vital essays.
Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia (Sabrina Strings, 2019) - jaw-droppingly thorough research into the role of fatpobia played and plays in the project of race-making.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong, 2019) - yeah so it turns out no one was REMOTELY exaggerating. Vuong really is That Good.
Hench (Natalie Zina Walschots, 2020) - wild fun with a ruthless protagonist and her sex villainous beetle man boss; what more could you ask for?
Love Your Asian Body: AIDS Activism in Los Angeles (Eric C. Wat, 2021) - learning about queer history makes me feel like I’m holding something so vibrant and fragile and precious right in my little queer hand. this book is an emotional journey in such a shining way.
Never Have I Ever (Isabel Yap, 2021) - EXCITING short story collection centered on girls having Just The Weirdest Time.
and everybody else:

Light From Uncommon Stars (Ryka Aoki, 2021)
Our Wives Under the Sea (Julia Armfield, 2022)
A Tiny Upward Shove (Melissa Chadburn, 2022)

special shame zone because I want you to know how bad this sucked, do not read this:
Rethinking Sex: A Provocation (Christine Emba, 2022). patronizing, puritanical, reductive, painfully cisheteronormative. weirdly afraid of group sex. not actually that provocative, just aggressively Catholic.
and last but most certainly least, a comic that I want to remind you all fucking sucked just one more time before the year is done.
Batman: One Bad Day - The Riddler (Tom King and Mitch Gerads, 2022)
Tom King, go fuck yourself. Mitch is cool though, the art slapped.

tagged by @gaygollum. thank you i've never been tagged in one of these before and it seems neat :)
3 ships: i would struggle to name any because i don't really ingest a lot of media in which romantic relationships are included or the central focus (which you'll see in the later sections of this post) and when they are i don't often like. think about it in terms of "shipping"
last song: well i went to spotify and the song i was in the middle of playing was ״Ijime, Dame, Zettai״ by Babymetal. so that one
last movie: god who knows. i watched half of a mystery movie with my dad last weekend and i don't think i've seen anything since. i'm not going to look it up but it was called like "murder on the phone" or something and i didn't even finish it because i thought it was boring
currently watching: started the sandman last weekend and have not picked it up since watching half of it in one day. dimension 20's neverafter if that counts which it should because those episodes are so damn long. i'm watching abbott elementary as it airs does that count as currently watching
currently reading: cod by mark kurlansky (though it's an overdue library book that i haven't picked up in weeks), we do this til we free us by mariame kaba, batman: urban legends vol 1 by chip zdarsky et al (so many people work on comics and he's the first name on the cover), the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson, and house of leaves if you count books that i haven't read in over a year but keep telling myself i'm going to come back to
currently craving: well i didn't have anything in my mind but now that it's brought up then caprese salad always. one time at a restaurant i ordered the caprese [something] don't remember exactly what it was called but it was pieces of flatbread with tomato and mozzarella and basil and prosciutto and olive oil and balsamic vinegar and it was delicious. so that
tagging @emrylurkeroftheloch, @tmoblrina, and @liichkiing who can make posts w these prompts if they like bc the original post that tagged me also tagged three people. and you are the first three mutuals i thought of

My goal for 2024 is still 2 books/week, but *also* at least 1 nonfiction book/month, bcs nonfiction was <3% of my 2023 reading.
Up first is Daughter of the Dragon by Yunte Huang. I need to read ~13 pages/day to finish it in January.
Currently reading Perilous Times by Thomas D. Lee which is a LOT of fun--Sir Kay awakens in unspecified future post-climate apocalypse England and teams up with accidental eco-terrorist Mariam to fight global warning. Also about halfway through The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher, but I'm enjoying it less than her other fairytales, so it's taking longer. And I'm a chapter into The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk, but haven't had time to really sit with it like I want to. I don't feel like it's the kind of book I can read a page at a time in quick minutes. :(
I'm also reading The Girl from the Other Side and Fruits Basket on the comics/manga side. 🥰

When was the last time you heard a Muslim woman speak for herself without a filter? In 2016, Mariam Khan read that David Cameron had linked the radicalization of Muslim men to the ?traditional submissiveness? of Muslim women. Mariam felt pretty sure she didn?t know a single Muslim woman who would describe herself that way. Why was she hearing about Muslim women from people who were neither Muslim, nor female?Years later the state of the national discourse has deteriorated even further, and Muslim women?s voices are still pushed to the fringes ? the figures leading the discussion are white and male.Taking one of the most politicized and misused words associated with Muslim women and Islamophobia, It?s Not About the Burqa is poised to change all that. Today’s rant is about Iron Man (2020) #4 and why we need a black man writing Rhodey, expeditiously. Buckle up kids. Tags for Wednesday Spoilers. Read at your own risk.
So basically, the run so far has revolved around Tony trying to rediscover who he is as a person and I guess trying to become the person he was when he first made the suit. Seems like a pretty good premise right? Except the writing is absolute horse shit. And I mean that. All due respect to Mr. Cantwell, but this is just... not the character he should be writing. Tony is written out of character numerous times (notably with the going to visit kids. It was doing it for publicity here but it’s been shown in the past that he actually enjoys visiting orphanages?) and it really dogpiles in this issue. Basically, Tony didn’t know he was paying this guy that was the villain, Korvac, to do some sciency stuff. The sciency stuff is of course villain stuff. Tony doesn’t figure this out until issue 3. And then in Issue 4 we find out Rhodey has been kidnapped.
Now look, I know these two are no stranger to being kidnapped. Hell I mean it’s literally a staple of Tony’s character at this point. But I want to break down Tony’s reaction to rhodey being kidnapped. Because, again, this is out. of. character.
So Tony’s being interviewed first [it’s the very beginning of the issue]. He’s asked if he’s going to be looking for Rhodey and Tony says no. He’s going to let the authorities handle it. Red fucking flag #1. Remember in Invincible Iron Man (2015) when Tony dropped off the literal face of the Earth and Rhodey quite literally moved heaven and earth to find him? Yeah so explain to me Tony. Why aren’t you going to find Rhodey? Oh it’s because,,, Korvac is using him as bait? wELL WHADDYA KNOW. A villain has done a thing to the person youre closest to to get to you. But oh guess fucking what, and this is what Korvac actually says. Korvac says, “If what I’ve done [kidnap Rhodey] has failed to make him show his face, this next part surely will.” [This little tidbit here is also the last time we see Rhodey in the rest of the issue] It doesn’t make sense to me why Korvac would kidnap Rhodey to use him as bait, when his plan all along was to do the villainy thing he was going to do in the first fucking place.
This is all a longwinded summary to say I am tired of writers using Rhodey as a pawn. I am sick of people like Dan Slott writing his PTSD as something to be turned on and off like a switch. I am sick of it. And if Cantwell isn’t going to do any better, just... Just please leave Rhodey out of it. It’s embarrassing and unnecessary.
I’m saying this as a rhodey stan, I love him with all my heart. And sometimes I recognize there are things that must be done for the better of the entire plot as a whole. I may not necessarily agree with those routes but I know they have to be taken. This, this isn’t a case like that. This isn’t a case where Rhodey may turn out to be one of the leads. This is just taking the Black Best Friend trope and manipulating it in different ways.
This isn’t everything I had a problem with and of course we still have more issues of Iron Man (2020) to be released (with #7 looking like I may get some pretty good Rhodey art bc Cafu is amazing) but I just... again I’m tired of seeing one of my favorite characters written like this. He hasn’t had a solo run in 6 years. Please let a Black man write him. Please.

a strongly worded letter
[read on ao3]
“You sent my mother a strongly worded letter!” Lena slammed the door to Kara’s apartment and threw her set of keys onto the kitchen table, “A strongly worded letter! I cannot belie-'' Lena stopped as she looked into the bedroom and saw that Kara wasn’t in there. Kara wasn’t here. Kara wasn’t here and the thing she should be most annoyed about should be the fact Kara had sent her mother a strongly worded letter but instead for some reason it was the fact her amazing entrance had been wasted which was annoying her most.
She collapsed on the couch and opened Kara’s laptop to bring up the email her mother had sent her with a picture of the letter. Lena already knew what most of it said, it had largely been relayed in the two-hour phone call with her mother which she had been forced to endure up until three minutes ago.
Lillian,
By the time she had read the first line she knew it was Kara. The circular handwriting that looked as close to Comic Sans as you could get. It was all so Kara.
I am writing this letter to remind you of the fundamental values of being a decent person, to name a couple, there are compassion and kindness. It is generally expected of a person to act with these values toward everyone in their life and everyone they meet however the bare minimum expected is your family and you don’t even seem to manage that.
Lena had to hold back a snort of laughter as she read. Kara didn’t often write or speak like this, normally she was the perfect exemplar of the third value she had listed and used it to fight everything but this wasn’t a surprise in any way. She could hear Kara say those words in her mind.
I want to begin by reminding you of the definition of some of these words as it seemed that you may have forgotten, or maybe just you were never taught. This would make sense considering the low-level intellect explained in other aspects of your life as well all indicate the fact you never received an actual education.
Lena began to have a sneaking suspicion that Alex had some involvement in the wording of this letter.
The Mariam-Webster dictionary defines compassion as sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it. An example of this may be found in the way others treat people who have the misfortune of being related to you. The complete rejection of this basic principle can be found in every way you treat your daughter.
The definition of kindness is a little easier to understand as it is a concept largely taught to us since we are in kindergarten but I thought I’d refresh your memory. The dictionary defines it as the quality or state of being kind or as affection. This can be seen in what you never showed to your daughter throughout her whole childhood.
However, there is one word I am sure that you know the definition of bigot. According to the dictionary, it is defined as a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices. I personally feel this inaccurate and it would be best changed to ‘Lillian Luthor’ to achieve the higher level of accuracy expected from a dictionary.
Lena almost wished she could see her mother’s face as she read this. Not be in the same room as her but maybe view her reaction through a computer screen, preferably on another planet.
Your actions, ideas and opinions throughout your life are quite frankly a complete rejection of the first two words I elected to explain and the complete embodiment of the final word I explained. Your homophobic opinions have repeatedly inflicted damage upon the daughter you are supposed to care for while she has only treated you with compassion and kindness, all of which you throw back in her face as soon as she is true to herself. You do not deserve Lena Luthor as a daughter and you do not deserve her in your family.
You should be so proud of the person she has become, not because of you, but despite you. Despite your horrendous example, she has transformed into one of the most caring, kind and compassionate people on the planet.
“I didn’t think you would be here,” a voice drew Lena’s focus away from reading on the laptop and she looked up to see her girlfriend in her super suit standing by the window, having just landed from a mission. “Are you okay?” she asked, speeding over to Lena and Lena finally realised there were tears in her eyes.
She discarded the laptop to one side and looked up at her girlfriend, “You wrote a strongly worded letter to my mother,” her voice broke as she said it.
"How do you know?" Kara asked in complete surprise.
"You practically signed your name," Lena sighed as Kara sat down on the couch next to her and wrapped her in a hug, "And the two-hour phone call from my mother which seemed to have occurred while you," Lena slowly shuffled out of Kara's arm and away from the smell, "Fought a…”
“Skunk-like alien,” Kara smiled, pressing her lips together, she stood up with a nod and sped off, returning in sweats a couple of seconds, towelling her hair.
“Sorry about the phone call,” she took a seat on the edge of the coffee table in front of Lena, “I didn’t think she would figure out it was me,”.
“She said she didn’t know of anyone who would write something like this,” Lena smiled softly.
“I had a lot more to say. Alex helped me cut it down to less than 1000 words,” Kara confessed, “And in my defence, I had no choice for anything but a letter because you said I couldn’t throw her into the sun, gently place her in the sun, put her on another planet, send her to another universe, gently drop her down on top of a tall mountain, accidentally leave her in crocodile-infested water or eng-” Kara was cut off by Lena’s lips meeting hers.
“Thank you,” she whispered as she pulled away.
“Always,” Kara smiled against Lena’s lips as she pulled her into another kiss.

Howdy. So I took a class in non-Shakespearean renaissance drama last semester. We read seven plays and they’re iconic and deserve to be read so I’ve compiled them for y’all. bon appetit
Comedies
The Roaring Girl, Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker: Rebelling, crossdressing, and stabbing f*ckboys. The mc Moll is an icon and the play subverts contemporary expectations for men and women in the best way.
A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, Thomas Middleton: The amount of bawdy jokes in this play puts Will to shame. A prime example of citizen comedy (a play that mocks London citizens); there’s disapproving parents outwitted by a daughter and her love, a comically unfit suitor, and as I mentioned plenty of d*ck jokes. My personal favorite character is Tim who returns from Cambridge and like will now only speak Latin but he’s not good at it and it’s so funny.
The Knight of the Burning Pestle, Francis Beaumont: my beloved. A grocer and his wife at the theatre decide that they don’t want to watch another citizen comedy. They decide that they’re going to put on their own play in which a grocer, played by their apprentice Rafe, is the hero. So while the original citizen comedy is going on, there is also a chivalric romance and lots of interruptions from the citizen and his wife. Metadrama turned up to 11. And by the end everything has just descended into chaos, huge monty python energy. Oh and the play was written for an all boys theatre company which is so wild to me as a concept.
The Shoemaker’s Holiday, Thomas Dekker: Probably my second favorite play we read after The Knight. (Roughly) based on the life of shoemaker Simon Eyre who eventually becomes mayor of London. It’s very fun and celebratory. There are also some great side characters like Sibyl, a witty lady’s maid, and Ralph, a wounded veteran who just really loves his wife ;-;
Tragedies
The Duchess of Malfi, John Webster: Another play loosely based off actual events. The titular duchess secretly marries her steward against her brothers’ (the Cardinal and the duke Ferdinand) wishes. The couple has three children together before the duchess’s brothers find out with the aid of spy Bosola. Ferdinand and Bosola are both incredible villains, Ferdinand because his obsession with his sister’s sexuality and his descent into madness is both disturbing and fascinating, and Bosola because his moral ambiguity makes him somehow detestable and endearing. I feel that the villains in this play rival Iago in terms of their ripeness for psychological analysis lol.
The Tragedy of Mariam, Elizabeth Cary: This may not have been my favorite of the plays we read (that’s just my opinion it was my classmate’s favorite) but it’s worth reading because it’s one of the very few renaissance plays written by a woman. It was a closet drama, not written for public performance, in Senecan style. It’s about Herod (killing of the innocents Herod not crucifixion Herod) and his second wife Mariam. Even though it’s set in ancient Israel, it reveals renaissance concerns about femininity and expectations for women from woman’s perspective.
*we also read Arden of Faversham but I’m not including that because there’s evidence to suggest parts of it were written by Shakespeare*
So yea. I expect fanfic and fanart of these plays on my desk by next thursday. thank you.
